En hovrätts bedömning av trovärdighet och tillförlitlighet i våldtäktsdomar år 2017 & 2021 : En innehållsanalytisk studie med utgångspunkt i det ideala offret / One Court of Appeal's assessment of credibility and reliability in rape convictions in 2017 & 2021 : A content analysis study based on the ideal victim

Bäckman-Mårdh, Sara, Belestam, Annika January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate how a plaintiff's story is valued in rape convictions and to see what could affect the credibility and reliability of the plaintiff and defendant. The study used 40 rape convictions from Svea Hovrätt distributed between 2017 and 2021, which were read through several times based on content analysis. The results were analyzed on the basis of theories such as the ideal victim, critical victimology and with a social constructionist perspective. Previous research in the same field was also used. The results of the study showed that there were no major differences between the years, but a small difference could be sensed where the bearing in the plaintiff's story weighed heavier in 2021 than 2017. What affected the reliability and credibility depended on whether it was the defendant or plaintiff. An indication of negative discrimination could also be noted concerning racialized persons, which mostly turned out to be due to language difficulties.

Who Are the Victims? : Scrutinizing the Discursive Representation of Victims in UN Measures Addressing Sexual Exploitation and Abuse by Peacekeepers and Personnel

Karhunen, Meri January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of the United Nations (UN) peace operations is to help states navigate a path towards stability and sustainable peace, yet sexual exploitation and abuse perpetrated by the peacekeepers and other personnel is often an unintended consequence of the missions. Though the UN has employed several victim-centred measures to address the issue, peacebuilding practices often employ a simplistic discourse about the victims that recognizes only certain type of ‘ideal’ victims. It risks disregarding the different conceptualisations of justice that victims have, along with their individual wants and needs. Leaning on van Dijk’s view on social power that deems institutions as locations producing dominant discourses and influencing people’s minds, it is crucial to study which discourses the UN engages with. Thus, through a methodological combination of critical discourse analysis and policy analysis, this study scrutinizes the discourses about the victims present in the resolutions and training materials that specifically apply a victim-centred approach. The findings indicate that the discourses entail characteristics of both ideal and complex political victim discourses, and that above all, the UN positions itself as the saviour of the victims. As this discourse is likely to continue reproducing power imbalances that place victims into a dependant position, this study emphasises a serious need for re-evaluation of the UN’s own discursive positioning.

Barn som offer och förövare : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av massmediernas framställning av barn involverade i gängkriminalitet samt Socialtjänstens roll i ämnet / Children as victims and perpetrators : A qualitative content analysis of mass media’s portrayal of children involved in gang crime and the role of Social Services in the matter

Hallman, Clara, Risberg, Nellie January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate how children involved in gang crime are portrayed in the media and how the Social Services are expected to work with these children, according to the media. Focus lies on the wave of gang violence in Sweden that increased during the fall of 2023. Cohen’s theory of moral panic was applied to shed light on how the media portrays the problem. The theory additionally allowed us to study what reactions, that characterizes moral panic, was present in the media during the time studied. The empirical material is based on 23 news articles from four different newspapers during the increase of violence. The data was examined using qualitative content analysis. Four themes appeared in the process of coding the material. The result shows that children are portrayed as both victims and perpetrators, occasionally at the same time. As a result, a role conflict could be identified. Recurring criticism and dissatisfaction with the actions of Sweden’s Social Services prevailed in the articles. In summary, moral panic is prevalent in the media. As studies show, this tends to affect how actors and various situations are depicted. Lastly, the conditions of the work done by the Social Services seems to, based on the articles, benefit from alterations.

Vulnerability, Victimization and VIVA: A Cluster Analysis of Cross-National Human Trafficking Victims

Kidd, Rachel Marie 11 May 2021 (has links)
Human trafficking, the cruel and inhumane crime that it is, exploits the lives of millions of people around the world. My study explores the common vulnerabilities that exist for victims of cross-national human trafficking. First, I analyze literature discussing individual and country- level victim demographics to identify characteristics that predict recruitment or abduction into human trafficking. Using the 2017 Counter Trafficking Data Collaborative, I demonstrate the applicability of Cohen and Felson's 1979 Routine Activity Theory (RAT) to explain the vulnerabilities to victimization further. More specifically, I use VIVA to assess the methods of control and types of exploitation utilized by domestic and international traffickers. A sociological study that combines the work of RAT and VIVA in relation to human trafficking victimization is yet to exist, therefore I am seeking to fill this research gap. The overarching goal of this study is to form a victim profile through cluster analysis and logistic regression in order to locate the unique patterns of victimization. My findings demonstrate that there is a significant relationship between the three clusters formed, the methods of control used by the perpetrator (physical, psychological, and economic abuse), and the types of exploitation suffered by the victim (sexual and labor exploitation). / Master of Science / Human trafficking is the abduction and exploitation of individuals, in which victims are manipulated into sex or labor trafficking in unfamiliar environments without compensation. Trafficking occurs beyond national borders, therefore I look at victims originating from all over the globe. The literature I utilize looks at individual-level demographics and national-level characteristics. I then use a database to link certain social and theoretical elements of these demographics and characteristics to the methods of control and types of exploitation traffickers enforce upon their victims. Overall, this study forms a victim profile and locates the unique patterns of trafficking victimization through multiple data applications. My thesis concludes with findings on clusters that combine age, gender, recruiter relations, literacy rates, and trafficking laws and regressions that link these clusters to physical, psychological, and economic control as well as sexual and labor exploitation.

PSYCHOSOCIAL RISK FACTORS FOR CYCLICAL URBAN VIOLENCE

Russell, Erin 05 1900 (has links)
Violence is a pervasive public health issue that disproportionately affects certain populations, particularly young black males in urban settings. Though this population experiences higher rates of violent victimization and perpetration, race should not be analyzed as an isolated variable. The social disorganization theory posits that social, cultural, and structural environmental factors shape a person’s behavior; this theory would suggest that higher rates of violence in young black men can be attributed to environmental factors rather than intrinsic traits like race. Young black males in urban settings experience high rates of poverty and institutional oppression, which primes these communities for excessive psychological trauma. The lasting effects of trauma, through Adverse Childhood Experiences and post-traumatic stress disorder, increase a person’s risk of violent victimization and perpetration, creating a cycle of violence in the community. Likewise, the high rates of firearm ownership create more opportunity for violent confrontation, especially in impoverished areas where joining a gang is perceived as one of the only options for economic and social survival as per the “Code of the Street.” In order to alleviate the burden of violence on this population, the root causes of violence, such as socioeconomic inequity and under-resourcing of disadvantaged communities, must be addressed by providing appropriate social services to those whom are most affected. / Urban Bioethics
