Considering pronunciation deviations which are produced by Chinese native speakers in the learning of German pronunciation, this dissertation conducts an intensive contrastive phonetic-phonological analysis of German (Standard internal German) and Chinese (Putonghua) on the segmental, the phonotactic and the suprasegmental levels, in order to further develop internet-based teaching and learning materials for German pronunciation targeting Chinese native speakers. Two educational videos about German pronunciation for Chinese native speakers based on this contrast are developed as a result of this analysis, with one focusing on German short and long vowels and the other on consonant clusters.

The main goal of this dissertation is to evaluate the effect of digital instructional materials with integrated text and videos, applying therefore an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in a High School environment. Probing the effects of such materials is justified in that digital media are ubiquitous in young learners’ lives, the target group of our study. Alternative educational media can lead to advances in the teaching and learning processes if the best strategies for their application is made evident. With that aim, we have produced a digital instructional material about the formation of the solar system and nuclear fusion energy in the Sun in EPUB3 format, which makes it readily accesible in the most important operating systems with the aid of an e-book reader. The same material was used in two different instances: in the first one, we used the text in its most traditional format, consisting only of written text and static images. In the second instance, we handed students the same written text, but with videos replacing some of the static images. The videos contained animations which intended to illustrate the same concepts covered in the static images they replaced. Before and after the application of the two materials, students answered a questionnaire about the written material and about the videos. The analysis of the answers to the questionnaire shows a significant improvement in the understanding of the concepts especially after the study of the materials with the videos, which suggests that videos in digital media can potentially enhance the learning of rather abstract physical concepts which are not usually present in the students’ everyday lives.

Interaction Design Patterns und CSCL-Scripts für Videolernumgebungen / Interaction design patterns and CSCL scripts for video-based learning environmentsSeidel, Niels 15 March 2018 (has links) (PDF)

Investigating the interactive use of computer simulations and videos in teaching grade 10 magnetism: a case study of four high schools in Mpumalanga provinceDzikiti, Lister Munodawafa 01 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the interactive use of computer simulations (CS) and videos on magnetism in Grade 10 at four high schools in the Mpumalanga province. Magnetism is one of the sections of the Physical Sciences CAPS curriculum. Four MST high schools in the Badplaas/Mashishila circuits of the Gert Sibande district in Mpumalanga were used as a case study.
Three schools were used as experimental groups while the fourth school was used as control group. The first group was taught using computer simulations. The second group was taught using videos. The third group was taught using both computer simulations and videos, and the fourth group was taught using normal traditional methods. Using the pre-post test non-equivalent control group design, it was found that learners in all the experimental groups, who were taught using either computer simulations or videos or both, achieved significantly higher scores after being subjected to the post-test than learners in the control group, who were taught only by the normal traditional method. Furthermore, learners who were taught using a combination of CS and videos achieved significantly higher scores than learners who were exposed to only CS or only videos. Class observations conducted during the study reported that the use of information communication technology (ICT) tools with learners in the experimental groups proved to be informative, motivational and inspirational. This was evidenced by active learner participation, the learners being able to make predictions after observations and provide scientific explanations of concepts through discussions. The use of ICT tools in the form of CS and videos proved to be an effective instrument which can enhance learning. / Physics / M. Sc. (Physics Education)

Etude et prédiction d'attention visuelle avec les outils d'apprentissage profond en vue d'évaluation des patients atteints des maladies neuro-dégénératives / Study and prediction of visual attention with deep learning net- works in view of assessment of patients with neurodegenerative diseasesChaabouni, Souad 08 December 2017 (has links)
This thesis is motivated by the diagnosis and the evaluation of the dementia diseasesand with the aim of predicting if a new recorded gaze presents a complaint of thesediseases. Nevertheless, large-scale population screening is only possible if robust predictionmodels can be constructed. In this context, we are interested in the design and thedevelopment of automatic prediction models for specific visual content to be used in thepsycho-visual experience involving patients with dementia (PwD). The difficulty of sucha prediction lies in a very small amount of training data.Visual saliency models cannot be founded only on bottom-up features, as suggested byfeature integration theory. The top-down component of human visual attention becomesprevalent as human observers explore the visual scene. Visual saliency can be predictedon the basis of seen data. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have proven tobe a powerful tool for prediction of salient areas in static images. In order to constructan automatic prediction model for the salient areas in natural and intentionally degradedvideos, we have designed a specific CNN architecture. To overcome the lack of learningdata we designed a transfer learning scheme derived from bengio’s method. We measureits performances when predicting salient regions. The obtained results are interestingregarding the reaction of normal control subjects against degraded areas in videos. Thepredicted saliency map of intentionally degraded videos gives an interesting results comparedto gaze fixation density maps and other reference models.
