Software as a Service (SaaS) has been considered as a trend for small, medium and large companies, subtly acquiring presence in personal computing too. This service popularizing brings with it many challenges concerning to information security handled by their suppliers and the vulnerability of their applications. In this work, we propose a SaaS development framework by combining the Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) with merging techniques of domain-security models and domainapplication model. This approach involves the use of MDE techniques for achieving such adaptation and assist in the software development process. By adopting the MDE approach, it is possible to combine elements of different models, from source models reaching a target model by using weaving techniques. A prototype implements the proposed framework and reuses the Mapping Tool for Model Driven Engineering (MT4MDE) and Semi-Automatic Matching Tool for Model Driven Engineering (SAMT4MDE) in order to demonstrate the used methodology. The results demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of combining several security aspects in the development process of SaaS. / O desenvolvimento e a utilização de softwares baseados em computação em nuvem têm conquistado cada vez mais destaque na atualidade. A oferta de SaaS (Software as a Service) se mostra uma tendência não apenas para as grandes empresas, mas também para as pequenas e médias, adquirindo espaço também na computação pessoal de forma transparente. Esta relativa popularização do serviço traz consigo muitos desafios no que se refere à segurança da informação manipulada pelos seus fornecedores e a vulnerabilidade de suas respectivas aplicações. Neste trabalho, propomos um framework de desenvolvimento de SaaS, fazendo uso da Engenharia Dirigida por Modelos (MDE) aliada a técnicas de fusão de modelos do domínio de segurança a modelos do domínio da aplicação. Esta abordagem envolve a utilização de técnicas de MDE para se alcançar tal adaptação e auxiliar na condução do processo de desenvolvimento do software. Através da adoção da abordagem MDE é possível realizar a junção de elementos de modelos diferentes, a partir de modelos fonte alcançando-se um modelo alvo pela utilização de técnicas de weaving. Um protótipo implementa o framework proposto e reutiliza as ferramentas Mapping Tool for Model Driven Engineering (MT4MDE) e Semi-Automatic Matching Tool for Model Driven Engineering (SAMT4MDE) na demonstração da metodologia usada. Os resultados demonstram a viabilidade e os benefícios da combinação de vários aspectos de segurança no processo de desenvolvimento de um SaaS.

Waffle Contrasts : Reinterpreting the Traditional Waffle Weave through Technical, Material and Colour Research

Asking the question: How can the waffle weave be reinterpreted through material, technical and colour research, the investigation of this MA thesis revolves around the weaving technique with the aim of presenting a collection of various woven textiles, where the waffle has been used in different ways. The weave, with its three- dimensional structure creates an interesting canvas to experiment upon as its structure creates both texture as well as depth to the textile. Furthermore, the research is conducted through a systematic exploration of the different aspects mentioned above, where theory and practise go hand in hand. Moreover, the practical experiments start as sketches on the computerised ARM looms and then are scaled up and revised on the industrial jacquard looms. The results showcase a variety of waffle weaves; from flat to three- dimensional, with various colour and surface effects as well as different compositions and overall forms. So, through this research, the degree project aims to explore and experiment the potential and possibilities of the waffle weave

Dynamic simulation of 3D weaving process

Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering / Youqi Wang / Textile fabrics and textile composite materials demonstrate exceptional mechanical properties, including high stiffness, high strength to weight ratio, damage tolerance, chemical resistance, high temperature tolerance and low thermal expansion. Recent advances in weaving techniques have caused various textile fabrics to gain applications in high performance products, such as aircrafts frames, aircrafts engine blades, ballistic panels, helmets, aerospace components, racing car bodies, net-shape joints and blood vessels. Fabric mechanical properties are determined by fabric internal architectures and fabric micro-geometries are determined by the textile manufacturing process. As the need for high performance textile materials increases, textile preforms with improved thickness and more complex structures are designed and manufactured. Therefore, the study of textile fabrics requires a reliable and efficient CAD/CAM tool that models fabric micro-geometry through computer simulation and links the manufacturing process with fabric micro-geometry, mechanical properties and weavability. Dynamic Weaving Process Simulation is developed to simulate the entire textile process. It employs the digital element approach to simulate weaving actions, reed motion, boundary tension and fiber-to-fiber contact and friction. Dynamic Weaving Process Simulation models a Jacquard loom machine, in which the weaving process primarily consists of four steps: weft insertion, beating up, weaving and taking up. Dynamic Weaving Process Simulation simulates these steps according to the underlying loom kinematics and kinetics. First, a weft yarn moves to the fell position under displacement constraints, followed by a beating-up action performed by reed elements. Warp yarns then change positions according to the yarn interlacing pattern defined by a weaving matrix, and taking-up action is simulated to collect woven fabric for continuous weaving process simulation. A Jacquard loom machine individually controls each warp yarn for maximum flexibility of warp motion, managed by the weaving matrix in simulation. Constant boundary tension is implemented to simulate the spring at each warp end. In addition, process simulation adopts re-mesh function to store woven fabric and add new weft yarns for continuous weaving simulation. Dynamic Weaving Process Simulation fully models loom kinetics and kinematics involved in the weaving process. However, the step-by-step simulation of the 3D weaving process requires additional calculation time and computer resource. In order to promote simulation efficiency, enable finer yarn discretization and improve accuracy of fabric micro geometry, parallel computing is implemented in this research and efficiency promotion is presented in this dissertation. The Dynamic Weaving Process Simulation model links fabric micro-geometry with the manufacturing process, allowing determination of weavability of specific weaving pattern and process design. Effects of various weaving process parameters on fabric micro-geometry, fabric mechanical properties and weavability can be investigated with the simulation method.

I arbetet har de parametrar som påverkar mötet mellan fiberoptik och väv, samt de möjligheter de tillsammans skapar utforskats. Resultatet är två exempel på tyger vävda med fiberoptik i kombination med mer traditionella textila material. Exemplen är framtagna för inredningssammanhang och visas som en rumsavdelare och som yttertyg på sittmöbler. / The thesis Binary surfaces - light-emitting textiles for an interior design context is an investigative work on how optical fibres can be used in woven structures. The work explores the different parameters that affect the interaction between optical fibres and weaving, and the possibilities they create together. The result is two examples of fabrics woven with optical fibres in combination with more traditional textile materials. The examples are designed for an interior context and are shown as a room divider and as outer fabric on seating furnishing.

Online fabric inspection by image processing technology

The purpose of this thesis is to automate the online detection of weaving defects by a computerized system based on image processing software. Obviously, fabric inspection has an importance to prevent risk of delivering inferior quality product. Until recently, the visual defect detection is still under taken offline and manually by humans with many drawbacks such as tiredness, boredom, and, inattentiveness. Fortunately, the continuous development in computer technology introduces the online automated fabric inspection as an effective alternative. Because the defect-free fabric has a periodic regular structure, the occurrence of a defect in the fabric breaks the regular structure. Therefore, the fabric defects can be detected by monitoring fabric structure. In our work, Fast Fourier Transform and Cross-correlation techniques, i.e. linear operations, are first implemented to examine the structure regularity features of the fabric image in the frequency domain. To improve the efficiency of the technique and overcome the problem of detection errors, further thresholding operation is implemented using a level selection filter. Through this filter, the technique is able to detect only the actual or real defects and highlight their exact dimensions. A software package such as Matlab or Scilab is used for this procedure. It is implemented firstly on a simulated plain fabric to determine the most important parameters during the process of defect detection and then to optimize each of them even considering noise. To verify the success of the technique, it is implemented on real plain fabric samples with different colours containing various defects. Finally, a vision-based fabric inspection prototype that could be accomplished on-loom to inspect the fabric under construction with 100% coverage is proposed.

I am not quite sure how to be a woman. It’s complicated, contradictory and highly surveilled. I make videos, sculptures and wearable objects that attempt to rationalize my female identity. The body is a sustained fixture in my work: as an armature, as an absent actor for constructed environments, as fragment and as the literal inclusion of my image. It is through these various modes of dis/embodiment that I negotiate the complexities of gendered existence. Crumbling ceramic and paper objects, pieced fabric forms, videos, beauty products, and delicate flowers reference splintered narratives and unwieldy terrains. I consider the idea of pink, not exclusively as color but as a framework for the perpetual performance of the body and the negotiation of contradictions within constructed identity.

Tactile constructions : Building with textile, sensual mathematics

In my thesis work I choose to define textile as a way of constructing, before seeing it as a material. I have explored the possibilities of building with the tension that is formed between the threads in weaving and knitting. By mixing the two techniques in the same fabric, I can benefit from their different qualities as the material produced creates the shape of the space.   As a textile designer studying spatial design, I have carried out this investigation to raise the importance and impact of textile in interior, and as an interior. By challenging the hierarchy of building construction materials and giving textile more value, I can acquire more sensual, tactile and maybe even unexpected qualities in the interiors I create.

Some Form Of Blue

Through my art process and material selection, I investigate how interior spaces long to accumulate memories and possessions. I am interested in encroaching floor to ceiling build-up of collected goods kept in the homes of individuals unable to discard or part with possessions. These individual’s daily movements through their space and their denial of the surrounding mass informs my work. My work is larger than human scale, made of multiple units, and dense; yet understated by the subtle use of color and repeated materials. When I make an installation it often begins with creating a wall or a floor that delineates itself from the actual architecture of a room. I procure discarded domestic fragments such as carpet, shingles, and blinds. I select one material for each project to emphasize excessive quantities. I seek out donated goods and trash piles, heaps on the edge of consumer waste. The sourcing of these materials is serendipitous. I elevate these mundane materials by taking them out of their original context. The cycle of regeneration moves from material to “art object” back to material again as the work is displayed and dispersed back into the cycle of waste. In this thesis I will discuss how through my process and materials, I investigate interior spaces where memory and possessions accumulate.

So as to attain such objective, two main paths have been followed: the first one aimed at studying the theory brought about by Adorno and Horkheimer while, simultaneously going deeper into the interpretation such authors have made of Homer s epopee. When describing the Dialectic of Enlightenment, the authors had, as their prime purpose, the investigation of the bond between reason and domination and used The Odyssey to set the grounds for their theory; nevertheless, due to the allegoric means they based their work upon, they ended up by inserting domination into the roots of rational thought. Ulysses, under their viewpoint, was the model of a bourgeois man who should govern Nature and himself on behalf of self-preservation. Adorno and Horkheimer introduced such a strict theory that finds parallel only in the conceptual strictness they criticized. In the narrow bond they created between reason and domination, the women represented in the Dialectic of Enlightenment by two essential figures, the wife and the prostitute, do not manage to find any other way of behavior, besides being in full compliance with the rules of their time. The second path intruded into the weaving and construed it as a way-out for the scheme proposed by Adorno and Horkheimer. By virtue of this (cultural) activity, described as a female talent, a quite different approach from the one that bound nature and women s role could be found. Therefore, weaving, which contains in itself an etymological bond with the word "text", stands out as a possibility of the feminine way of speaking, an amplification of women's voice in the Antiquity, besides being their means of participation in the outside world, a world that is so different from the home environment to which they usually belong / A presente dissertação teve como objetivos principais a compreensão da hipótese apresentada por Adorno e Horkheimer, em seu livro A Dialética do Esclarecimento, sobre as relações entre os conceitos de natureza e feminino, bem como, buscar por meio da tecelagem, atividade comum a todas as figuras femininas da obra analisada pelos autores frankfurtianos, a Odisseia, um segundo caminho viável para a participação das mulheres na Antiguidade. Para tanto dois eixos principais foram desenvolvidos. O primeiro consiste em uma aproximação em relação à teoria de Adorno e Horkheimer, assim como da interpretação que os autores fazem da epopeia homérica. Ao escreverem a D.E., os autores tinham como objetivo principal investigar o vínculo entre razão e dominação e fizeram uso da Odisseia para fundamentar a sua teoria; entretanto, por meio da interpretação alegórica que fazem da obra, findam por inserir a dominação nas bases do pensamento racional. Fazendo de Ulisses modelo do homem burguês, que deve dominar a natureza, bem como a si mesmo em nome da autoconservação, Adorno e Horkheimer estabelecem uma teoria tão rígida quanto à rigidez conceitual que criticam. No liame estreito que criam entre razão e dominação, as mulheres, representadas na D.E. por duas figuras essenciais, a esposa e a prostituta, também não encontram nenhuma outra via de atuação que não a de dominada. O segundo eixo do trabalho trata da tecelagem como saída para o esquema proposto por Adorno e Horkheimer. Por meio desta atividade (cultural), apresentada como um dom feminino, foi possível encontrar uma abordagem diferenciada daquela que vincula natureza e feminino.
