Prototyping Tools for the Early Stages of Web Design

Anggreeni, Irene January 2006 (has links)
There is a gap between low-fidelity prototyping using paper and high-fidelity prototyping using computers in web design. Both serve well in different stages of web design, but are not well integrated. Prior studies have examined the practice of web designers. The studies resulted in a number of alternative prototyping tools, which focus on informal representation and try to prolong sketching in the design process. The thesis proposes a design of a prototyping tool that makes use of existing paper sketches. In paper prototyping, a human who acts as the “computer” makes the sketches interactive. In the prototyping tool put forward in the thesis, the interactivity of the sketches is instead created on the computer. The novel prototyping tool needs to support the interactions and behaviours used in web design, and it must be easy to use so that the web designers do not have to invest too much time learning it. The prototype of the tool is a sketch-and-scan interface, thus allowing the use of paper the way it is. The functionality supports both documentation and computer interactivity. Usability tests and expert reviews were conducted, involving students, lecturers and researchers in human-computer interaction. The results elaborate previous research on prototyping practice, and a designers’ wish list was formulated. A prototyping tool is expected to support communication between users, designers and developers; as well as to reduce a designer’s need to change his work practice when using the tool.

Estímulos no ambiente de compra online: impacto na intenção de recompra do consumidor / Stimulus on the on-line shopping environment: impact on the consumer repurchase intention

Ana Cristina Pinzkoski Conde 15 April 2013 (has links)
This project presents a study that investigates how recurrent online consumers are influenced by different aspects while shopping through websites (e-commerce). The author reviewed main international academic studies about buying intents through the internet, and then investigated and modeled an integrative survey, which could correlate both consumer satisfaction and rebuying intent with a series of factors related to the shopping experience. The main contribution of this paper is the identification of the most important factors on the online stores (e-retail) which positively impact the online shoppers, both, those already analyzed in many studies as content, layout, enjoyment and perceived risks, and some new constructs that have not been analyzed together as headlines, price/discount offers, advertisement appealing and easiness of browsing. Moreover, this paper also offered a perspective about whether and how these factors vary according do consumers\' generation. All data was extracted from an online self-administered survey with 330 consumers in São Paulo who declared being used to shopping goods through Internet. It came to a 228 valid respondents, whose responses were analyzed through the method of Partial Least Squares (PLS), in order to obtain both, the correlation of dependent and independent constructs, as well as the correlation among all factors analyzed within this study. The main outcome of this study is that online shoppers\' satisfaction strongly impacts their rebuying intention. Moreover, all the constructs present in this study have proved their positive impact on consumers rebuying intention, each factor varying in correlation strength, but all positive and statically proven. Besides that, the variable \'generation\' moderated 4 out of all 8 constructs presented in this study. Lastly, the proposed model statically explains higher proportion of total rebuying intention variance.

The starting point of this research is the relationship between Information Science and Web Design. Intersections identified, structured and deepened through a bibliographical research, allow the glimpse of a strong approximation between the two fields, and open up important discussions about the relationship between theory and practice, as well as between science and design. The literature review allows forecasting information design as a discipline able to concentrate studies on information architecture, information visualization and usability, making use of theoretical and practical methods. In the search for a methodological support to allow a more natural relationship between areas, taking into account the design proccess without sacrificing scientific rigor, Design Science emerges as a scientific field capable of facilitating interdisciplinary relationship that guides this dissertation.

The complexity of a Web page and the cognitive load are some of the factors that influence this performance. The new web trends explored the impact of a minimalist design, specifically Responsive Design, usability both blind as sighted people. We selected six websites, divided into 3 categories (Education, E-Commerce and Entertainment), responsive and another non-responsive in each category, participants performed tasks under scenarios built specifically for each category, we extract the time of completion, rate errors of tasks performed and also the comments made by participants to show whether Responsive Design has a positive or negative impact on usability. We conclude that the chance of a User complete the task in a responsive site is less than a non responsive, that age has an impact on the finalization of the tasks, that users with a college has a greater chance of completing tasks and that the blind average time is about 4.5 times greater for finalization tasks and on average 1.5 times more responsive when accessing sites.

A reflective account : exploring the nature of web-based instructional design by a practicing teacher

Kletke, Raymond 11 1900 (has links)
Technology has become a fundamental yet dynamic component of modern society, affecting almost every structure within it. However, education has been slow to change relative to the acceptance and use of technology in teaching and learning contexts. This research seeks to begin to bridge this technological chasm by examining what considerations a teacher instructional designer needs to be mindful of when designing a substantial Web-based learning resource. The researcher employs a qualitative methodology through the compilation of field notes and narratives describing the experiences and observations of a classroom teacher employing the ADDIE instructional design model to develop a Web-based learning resource for two high-school level Marketing courses. The researcher has maintained a unique triad of professional roles throughout this project, including teacher, instructional designer, and researcher. The findings of this research emphasize the interrelationships between the three key conceptual areas: reflective practice, instructional design, and Web design. / Education, Faculty of (Okanagan) / Graduate

Hue combinations in web design for Swedish and Thai users : Guidelines for combining color hues onscreen for Swedish and Thai users in the context of designing web sites

Ruse, Vidal January 2017 (has links)
Users can assess the visual appeal of a web page within 50 milliseconds and color is the first thing noticed onscreen. That directly influences user perception of the website, and choosing appealing color combinations is therefore crucial for successful web design. Recent scientific research has identified which individual colors are culturally preferred in web design in different countries but there is no similar research on hue combinations. Currently no effective, scientifically based guidelines on combining hues for web designers exist either, since recent research by Ou et al and Szabo et al, among others, proves the classic color harmonies invalid. Therefore this study aims to identify guidelines for culturally appropriate hue combination in context of web design. The study is limited to culturally appropriate combining of hues in Thai and Swedish web design.

Design Principles in Mobile Web Usability

Pettersson, Elena, Thai, Tiffany January 2017 (has links)
As the use of mobile devices is increasing and the use of laptops and computers is decreasing it is becoming more important to design for better web usability across platforms. The established design principles for web design provide guidelines when designing and testing web usability. The principles, however, are not commonly used to evaluate and test the usability of mobile websites. This study seeks to examine how the usability of mobile and desktop websites is affected based on the adaption of established web design principles. The study is built upon an analytical framework where common keywords have been selected from a selection of established web design principles. This study takes on a qualitative approach with experimental features, using a heuristic evaluation, a usability study and an eye-tracking experiment. The study indicates that there is a connection between low adaption of certain keywords of web design principles and the usability of mobile and desktop websites, contributing to a deeper understanding of how adaption of design principles affect web usability across platforms.

Collman, Clara January 2015 (has links)
This report describes the work commissioned by design bureau Spektra Design. The task was to create a website for the Latin American Film Festival Panoramica, organized for the first time in Stockholm in September 2015. I have created the design for the website and developed the site from scratch in Wordpress. Panoramica has a vision to form a basis for a distribution and marketing network spreading Latin American film in Sweden. They want the festival to become a public face for Latin American film in Sweden and works to "promote exchanges and dialogue between different ethnic groups in Sweden by updating the range of stories from Latin America." A large portion of the website is its design. The design contributes to the overall impression of the site, but also if it is perceived as easy to understand or complicated. This paper examines how one can apply critical theory in a practical design process. The outcome of the work is a complete website where the focus is on film. It's easy to read about each movie, watch trailers, and create your own program. The colors and the typography is strong and distinctive and is allowed to take place, in an effort to break the Western minimalist design trend and highlight the Latin American aspects of the design. During the work I have come to the conclusion that breaking norms or conventions of how a web page should look like is not necessarily a must. The key is to keep asking yourself: Who is represented, who is the norm and who is the design for? These are important issues to bring into a design process even if they are difficult to answer.
