Connected to a Better Me and Ignoring You: The Role of Future Self-Connectedness in Social Comparison and Temporal Self-Comparison Processes

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Individuals differ in the extent to which they feel connected to their future selves, which predicts time preference (i.e., preference for immediate versus delayed utility), financial decision-making, delinquency, and academic performance. Future self-connectedness may also predict how individuals compare themselves with their past selves, future selves, and other people. Greater connectedness may lead to more self-affirming types of temporal self-comparison, less self-deflating types of temporal self-comparison, and less social comparison. Two studies examined the relation between future self-connectedness and comparison processes, as well as effects on emotion, psychological adjustment, and motivation. In the first study, as expected, future self-connectedness positively predicted self-affirming temporal self-comparison and negatively predicted self-deflating temporal self-comparison and social comparison. In addition, future self-connectedness had beneficial direct and indirect effects on adjustment, emotion regulation, and motivation. Unlike previous research, this study examined all three components of future self-connectedness, as opposed to only one. Exploratory analyses examined the items comprising the similarity-connectedness component and found that the relation of these items to the other variables in the model did not differ, though some of the relations in the model were moderated by college generation status. The second study tested whether increasing future self-connectedness would have similar effects on comparison, adjustment, emotion, and motivation. It implemented a pilot future self-connectedness manipulation, an established identity-stability manipulation, and a control condition. The pilot manipulation and identity-stability manipulation failed to affect future self-connectedness relative to control, and did not affect comparison, motivation, adjustment, or emotion. Future research should ascertain whether there is a causal link between connectedness and social comparison or temporal self-comparison processes. Overall, this research links future self-connectedness to social comparison and temporal self-comparison processes, as well as well-being, emotion, and motivation, which demonstrates the importance of connectedness in new, important areas. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Psychology 2018

The Social Construction and Reciprocity of Resilience: An Empirical Investigation of an Organizational Context

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: This research examines the communicative processes of resilience in the organizational context of public education. The research utilizes one-on-one interviews to elicit descriptions of resilience and well-being and collect stories of success and overcoming challenges. The study purpose is two-fold: (1) to understand the ways in which organizational members construct and enact resilience individually and collectively through their talk and stories, and (2) to extend the communication theory of resilience through an empirical investigation of resilience in an organizational context. An iterative, thematic analysis of interview data revealed that resilience, as lived, is a socially constructed, collective process. Findings show resilience in this context is (1) socially constructed through past and present experiences informing the ways organizational members perceive challenges and opportunities for action, (2) contextual in that most challenges are perceived positively as a way to contribute to individual and organizational goals and as part of a “bigger purpose” to students, (3) interactional in that it is constructed and enacted collaboratively through social processes, (4) reciprocal in that working through challenges leads to experience, confidence, and building a repertoire of opportunities for action that become a shared experience between educators and is further reciprocated with students, and (5) is enacted through positive and growth mindsets. This study offers theoretical contributions by extending the communication theory of resilience and illuminating intersections to sensemaking, flow, and implicit person theory. I offer five primary practical applications, discuss limitations, and present future directions highlighting community development and strengths-based approaches. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Communication 2018

The People's Choice: Exploring the Role of Collective Leader Endorsement in Dynamic Leadership Relationships

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Grounded in the relational view of leadership, this dissertation explores the dynamics of the leader/follower relationship in the context of a collective using a social networks approach. Specifically, I build on DeRue and Ashford’s (2010) work that focuses on dynamic, socially constructed leadership relationships within a dyad to focus on such relationships within a collective. In doing so, I conceptualize collective leader endorsement – receiving a grant of leader identity from a collective of followers – and examine the implications of collective leader endorsement. As a dynamic relationship, collective leader endorsement can change as individuals give and receive grants of leader identity. I draw on relational models of leadership theory and appraisal theory to examine how contextual situations (i.e., identity jolts) prompt change in collective leader endorsement at the network level and how such change can influence individual functioning at the individual level. As a socially constructed relationship, collective leader endorsement creates the potential for disagreement among members of the collective regarding grants of leader identity. I draw on social comparison theory and appraisal theory to suggest that agreement (or lack thereof) can influence the individual’s perceived demands and overall functioning within the collective. Using data from 106 individuals on a collegiate football team in the United States over 12 consecutive weeks, I find significant changes in collective leader endorsement and the associated leadership network over the course of the season. Specifically, I find that challenging situations prompted a reevaluation of leader identities and shifted the patterns within the leadership network. In addition, change in an individual’s level of collective leader endorsement prompted additional perceived demands and lowered well-being. This relationship was attenuated if the individual had a supportive coach to help him cope with additional leadership demands. Finally, (lack of) agreement regarding the individual’s leader identity also influenced the individual’s well-being. Specifically, the individual experienced enhanced perceived demands (and associated lower well-being) if the individual’s perception of who should receive grants of leader identity was incongruent with the collective’s perception of collective leader endorsement. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Business Administration 2018

Bonding from Afar: The Effects of a Writing Micro-intervention on Perceived Child-Parent Connectedness and Personal Well-being

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Previous studies about well-being have examined either gratitude’s or social connectedness’ relationship to subjective well-being. The aim of this randomized control trial was to examine the efficacy of a gratitude-based writing micro-intervention in enhancing felt social connectedness and well-being between young adults and their parents. The trial tested the impact of engaging in gratitude-based writing about family members or enhanced caretakers on measures of social connectedness and well-being between grown children and their parents. Data from a pool of social work students in the Southwest (N=148) were used. Results revealed within-subject effects and between subject effects for psychological well-being from pretest to one month follow-up, with the intervention group reporting significantly higher psychological well-being than the control group. Results also revealed slight mean differences from pretest to posttest for perceptions of family relationships, with the intervention group reporting approaching significant better perceptions of family relationships than the control group at posttest. Findings from the study indicate that engaging in gratitude-based writing about family can improve perceptions of psychological well-being and may improve social connectedness to family. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Social Work 2018

School’s social environment in relation to participation and well-being of young adolescents with self-rated neurodevelopmental problems

Meng, Qi January 2018 (has links)
Young adolescents with neurodevelopmental disabilities tend to have lower levels of participation and poorer well-being compare to their typically developing peers. School is a key setting for adolescents to participate. School’s social environment is found to be influential to both participation and well-being for young adolescents. This paper investigates the relations between school’s social environment and participation, well-being of young adolescents with self-rated neurodevelopmental problems (SNP) and whether participation is associated with well-being of this population. Data of this study was retrieved from wave three of the longitudinal research programme LoRDIA. Study participants were 175 adolescents aged 14-15 years old with SNP. Linear regression was conducted to test the hypothesis. Results show that bullying is the strongest (negative) predictor to both participation and well-being for young adolescents with SNP, which means students within this group who have been bullied are more likely to have low level participation and poor well-being. Relation to teachers is also a strong positive predictor to participation of this population. Class atmosphere is less predictive compare to the other two predictors but still have moderate positive correlation with both participation and well-being. Adolescents with neurodevelopmental disabilities or problems are a vulnerable group, school’s environment is essential to their development. Experience of bullying has a profound and long-term negative effect on children’s participation and well-being. Therefore, more longitudinal data will be needed to further understand this issue. Relation to teachers brings up that the focus and attention should not only been put on students but also on fulfilling teacher’s needs, so they could provide higher quality of teacher-student relationships.

Beijner, Magdalena, Wahldén, Johan January 2018 (has links)
Previous research shows that time pressure exists in auditing, which has shown to be a major source of stress. Research indicates that stress could lead to harmful consequences on the well-being, and with effective strategies these consequences can be reduced. There seems to exist a research gap concerning strategies to handle stress in auditing, both in an individual- and organizational perspective. The aim of this study is therefore to obtain an understanding of how auditors and audit firms handle stress from time pressure, in terms of strategies aiming to foster the well-being. To fulfill the aim a qualitative research method has been used, through interviews with auditors, audit assistants and HR-workers. The subject has been studied through literature in the following perspectives: time pressure in auditing, time pressure in relation to stress, the impact of stress on well-being and strategies to handle stress. The result of the study shows that auditors and audit assistants use strategies that both tackles the emotions from stress and the source of the stress. The identified strategies on the individual level are: planning & prioritizing, help & support, boundary setting, recovery and attitude. It appears that the work of the audit firms to handle stress is of importance, and the identified strategies are: cutting peaks, mentorship & close leadership, external support and flexibility. The conclusion of the study shows that auditors, audit assistants and auditing firms strategies is of great importance to reduce negative effects of stress and thereby foster the well-being.

Engsander, Marie, Hummelstedt, Isabelle January 2018 (has links)
The way people work today is shaped by the constant changes in society. The development within informative and communication technology is rapidly evolving, which can be seen as a contributory factor to the way society is shaping. Smartphones and computers lessens the need for physical availability at work, which increases the demands on workers to create an accessibility through their technical devices instead. The changed ways of working can be challenging due to the fact that people, as a result, get bigger influence to arrange their own workday. That leads us to a boundless kind of labor, which comes with both opportunities and risks. This thesis attempts to examine the experience of female managers of two age groups, connected to the boundless conditions that has relevance for their working environment. The purpose of this essay is to look at the female managers own experiences of boundless work conditions and what kind of meaning it has for their wellbeing. In order to provide with knowledge that goes in line with our purpose, theories revolving flexibility, accessibility, the job demand-control model and separation of the two spheres work and leisure have been used in combination with previous research. Previous research within the field has shown that clear boundaries between work and leisure is of importance for one's wellbeing and overall satisfaction with life. The satisfaction can be forsaken when for example working from home. Our conclusions demonstrate that a high workload often results in difficulties within boundary control. The respondents appreciate work flexibility since it enables them to achieve a higher level of concentration. No differences between the age groups were found.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 4019022 bytes, checksum: 18798c18062f5260141eb7e3f7a6fc8e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-21 / This study aims to analyze the perceptions of public servants of the Center for Communication, Tourism and Arts (CCTA), from the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB), on welfare and quality of life in retirement, as well as on changes in life postretirement. Therefore, the relationship between the retired people and the UFPB was identified through services that promote well being and quality of life and, moreover, the activities developed by the newly retired that promote quality of life and well-being. From the methodological point of view, this is a descriptive and exploratory research which aims to analyze the perceptions of a group of servers in the post-retirement phase, from the qualitative approach, using for the data collection an instrument containing an interview half structured. The sample consists of 08 (eight) retired employees in the last (04) four years and who performed their functions in administrative positions in the CCTA / UFPB. For the data processing, the technique of content analysis, proposed by Bardin, is used. According to the results, the data indicate that post-retirement life reveals more positive rather than negative perceptions. Also, is observed the consistency the with non-dissociation of the terms quality of life and well-being. The majority of the participants recognize in the retirement a gain of free time, involving flexibility of schedules for the family, the leisure, the practice of physical activities and health care. They also point out that they lack the work environment and socializing with their colleagues, as well as wage losses as negative factors after retirement. The coexistence of labor represents friendly ties with the institution. The public policies related to the retired server are pointed out as unfavorable, arbitrary and with no positive perspectives. Regarding the preparatory programs for retirement, most of interviewed people claim to be unaware of them. Therefore, it is important to promote actions, to plan adequately and widely disseminated concurrently with the work linkages of the server with the institution. Such suggestions will be taken to the Coordination of Quality of Life (CQV), linked to the Pro-Rector's Office of People Management (PROGEP / UFPB), in order to adopt practices that may generate new perspectives, not only in the performance of the work activities of the server as well as at the time of shutdown. We feed the perspective that the engaged server in such actions can perceive retirement not only as a reorganization of life, but also as a reconstruction in the way of thinking and seeing the future, in search of well-being and quality of life after the retirement.

Anita, Schmidek. January 2009 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The aim of this research was to increase the knowledge about genetic and non genetic effects upon pre-weaning Brazilian beef cattle mortality, as well as to evaluate the possibility of considering direct and/or indicative characteristics in genetic evaluation of sires. Herds of Nelore (2) and Guzerá (1) cattle were studied assessing pre-weaning mortality, calf vigor at birth and neonate behaviour; all records were analyzed using the methodology of generalized linear models regarding non genetic effects, and the methodology of generalized linear mixed models was used for the genetic analysis. Calf birth weight was the main effect influencing calf vigor and mortality, with more problems occurring in calves with extreme weights, especially the very low ones. The estimated direct heritabilities were low to moderate for calf mortality (0.05 to 0.27), low for vigor (0.10) and null for the fails in the first suckling. Maternal heritabilities were low for calf mortality and vigor (0.00 to 0.03) and moderate for the fails in the first suckling (0.17). The selection for yearling weight did not influence pre-weaning mortality. The variation in deaths occurrence during the pre-weaning period indicates that inspections should be more intense during the first fifteen days of life. Considering the calves with high risk of death, it is recommended to pay attention to the factors that induce the low vigor and mortality of calves, eg. very thin and heavy calves, calves born from heifers or old cows, as well as male calves. The register of vigor at birth can be adopted as a tool to prevent that deaths occur, since it is of low cost and presents simple and trustworthy collection for prediction of calves with death risk. Due the importance of the mammary system, affecting the frequency of fails in the first suckling, it is expected...

Silva, Caroline Lima January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to understand the adolescents‟ perceptions about social justice based on Critical Psychology and social justice paradigm. In addition, this study sought to investigate the relationship between the perceived conditions of social justice (personal, relational and collective) and well-being. The work also examined the role of adolescents facing issues of social justice and (also to know) how teens relate the current sociopolitical and cultural Brazilian context with the principles of social justice. Seven focus groups were conducted with 46 total participants of both sexes, aged between 14 and 17 years. The adolescents are high school students from public and private schools of teaching network of Lajeado/RS. The script of debate in the focus groups considered as a key issue the adolescents‟ perception about the concept of social justice. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively by the method of analysis of the content. Indicators have been identified related to the categories: power, ability, opportunity, social class, money, race, culture, education, and appearance. It is observed the naturalization of culture on issues of racial prejudice and the need for education in human values through the implementation of government policies.
