Fancy, Benjamin A 29 August 2014 (has links)
This paper examines the interconnections of nature, magic, and violence in the Nouveaux contes de fées (New Fairy Tales) of the Countess of Ségur and their illustrations. It focuses on the ways in which the Countess reappropriates the framework of the literary fairy tale and subtly breaks with the traditions established by past fairy-tale authors, encouraging a return to nature and a movement away from the perceived corruption of the nineteenth-century city within the context of a timeless magical world. Close study of the Countess’s multiple perspectives on violence as either a motivating form of punishment or as a display of pure malice reinforce the dichotomy of good vs. evil as it is developed in the text, reflecting the author’s desire to create an ordered world in which obedience is rewarded and cruelty is justly punished.

Illuminated Books: A Voyage Through the Verbal-Visual and Caribbean Folklore

Ganeshram, Shannon 01 January 2022 (has links)
This thesis looks at the modern recontextualization of the illuminated book. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach to English literature and the arts, it illustrates the dialectic between word and image. In my writing, I explore artists’ books as a physical representation of the constant dialogue of the verbal-visual relationship and how they affect each other. In this endeavor, I create an artist book, a modern bestiary that alludes to the myths and folklore of the Indo-Caribbean, specific to the country of Guyana.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Patrick Tedesco.pdf: 3180078 bytes, checksum: 512b1518afbfec5f97f113ebf689d47b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-03-15 / This study is the result of an interdisciplinary critical comparatist investigation of three narratives from Brazilian writer Sérgio Sant Anna - the short stories Cenários (1982) and A mulher nua (2003), as well as the fiction text O livro de Praga: narrativas de amor e arte (2011). The line of investigation is the study of the relation between word and image, focusing on the relation between Literature and Visual Arts, which can be both identified in Sant´Anna s texts. Concepts and theoretical contributions not only from the field of literary studies were applied, but also from the intertextuality and semiotic theories, which deal with the relation between verbal and imagetic textualities. The results corroborate the understanding that Sant´Anna`s writing has the characteristic of being self-referring, intersemiotic and problematizing of the literary production activity.

García Acosta, Pablo 02 July 2009 (has links)
In this thesis we claim the recontextualization of the Mirouer des simples ames in its medieval context so that its images can be restored as far as perception, rhetoric and reception are concerned. By this work we place the text in contexts where the audience was no necessarily clerical or educated: we justify the textual visibility because of the didactic character of the device, and we take it as a category of historical analysis. We therefore reconstruct the visible aspects of the Mirouer and explain its poetics. In the first place, we decode the images through the philological analysis of the text and, in the second place, we compare the poretean work with other documents from that period (written and, mostly, visual ones). In short, we propose a hermeneutic of the mere written word through the verbal mechanisms that create the visualization of the image in the poretean work.

Kearney, Beth F. 11 1900 (has links)
Valentine Penrose was a surrealist poet, novelist and collagist, less well-known than many of her female counterparts such as Frida Kahlo or Claude Cahun. Albeit few, there are studies on Penrose that recognize both the omnipresence of women and their often disquieting portrayal. The origins of these representations remain, however, largely under-explored. In order to fill this considerable lacuna in existing knowledge on Penrose’s work, this thesis will analyze her œuvre, highlighting the textual and pictorial presence of two major influences: literary Saphism and the Gothic novel. In addition to analyzing the collages that accompany the poetry in Dons des féminines, we will also study the corpus’ many images in absentia, as we believe that Penrose’s style very often has recourse to “pictorial” literary devices. Consequently, throughout our analyses, we adopt both a literary and an intermedial approach, looking closely at both textual and pictorial representations of women in order to demonstrate the polymorphous borrowing of two traditions; Saphism and the Gothic appear via the representation of certain characters, Penrose’s thematic biases and the choice of particular spatial environments and narrative structures. The present study thereby sheds light on the representation of three female figures specific to Penrose’s universe: the woman of nature (la femme-nature), the fugitive (la fugueuse) and the rebel (la rebelle) each exemplify the way in which Penrose’s œuvre is located at the crossroads of literary Saphism and the Gothic novel.

Písmo a obraz v českom a slovenskom umení 50. a 60. rokov 20. storočia / Word and Image in Czech and Slovak Art in the 50's and 60's of 20th Century

Hachlincová, Lenka January 2015 (has links)
(in English) This dissertation paper deals with the transformation of the relationship letter and image in the Czechsoslovakian art in the 1950s and 1960s, interpreted from the point of view of the cultural and social events not as the history of art, but history of reality representation. The objective of the paper is to create a more complex view of various levels of integration of letter and image in domestic environment, so it approaches the phenomena of letter and image from a specific interpretation point of view based on three main lines. Mapping the phenomena of letter and image in the context of that period in Czechoslovakia, which preceded work structuralizing, was the base of the first interpretation line which bases the core of work on four social "activators", which, in the mind of an artist, activated the need to incarnate letter and image. Since the subject of the paper is the letter as a material manifestation of the language, the second interpretations line follows the purposeful modification of the language structure between the signifiant and signifié, which occurs in visual imaging. The third interpretation line puts the first two into a broader, aesthetic and philosophical context due to which, more complex language structures entering the art of work can be identified.
