Lan-Yu Amateur Writer ¡V Siyapenjipengaya and His Compositions

Abstract In recent years, studies of Taiwanese aboriginal literature have been given attentions due to the trend of localization in literature. Japanese scholars are the pioneers who are interested in and study Taiwanese aboriginal literature. They spend lots of efforts on studying Yami tribe much more than on other aborigines in Taiwan. The Yami did not have written language. They orally passed their culture on generation by generation. Therefore, they have abundant literature of oral tradition. Siyapenjipengaya, a Yami, worried that the Yami culture would be lost because of the assimilation to the Han nationality. He, therefore, recorded the culture features in literation. Yami is one of the Austronesian tribes, and they are the only aborigine who live near coasts in Taiwan. Their culture is much different from the other aborigines in Taiwan, and they are the only aborigine who do not have the tradition of headhunting and wine making. This study focused on the features of tribalism and cultural heritages in the works of Siyapenjipengaya. The works displaying tribalism were classified as the origins of the tribe, the spirits in traditional stories, life stories, and Anito¡¦s stories. The works displaying cultural heritages were classified as the knowledge of seas and oceans, cultural heritages, and Yami songs. By studying the folk stories and songs in the works of Siyapenjipengaya, the purpose of this study was to comprehend the custom and tradition of Yami culture.

During the warring states period of china, the conflict of the domestic, diplomacy, and military affairs are keep happing between each states. Diplomatic power is the important role to deal these complicated situations, however the person¡¦s talent is the key to diplomatic power. Thus, person¡¦s talent and intelligent are attract the special attention. Under this competitive circumstance, Many powerful politician tend to hire ¤h/shi/ to give them advises, provide stage for ¤h/shi/ and facilitate their popularities. Form royal to rural, civil to military, mysterious diplomacy to gruesome battlefield, gangster to hero, ¤h/shi/ can be seen everywhere. They use their talent to pursuit powerful position, those person building accomplish by becoming a counselor or criticizer. ¤h/shi/ enjoy the special glorious treatment in warring states period of china, they even can control country¡¦s policy, influence the King¡¦s decision and dominate the future direction of the country. Those who contribute their intelligent and talent to their Master or King, might have different purposes and motivations. This research focus on the¤h/shi/ who provide their talents for King and other powerful politician, and discuss their philosophy and values. The first chapter explains respectively the motivation, hypothesis and methodology. Those aspects focus on ¡§the meaning of ¤h/shi/¡¨, ¡§The historical background or setting about the rise of¤h/shi/¡¨, ¡§The change and classification of¤h/shi/¡¨ to interpret warring period¤h/shi/¡¦s category and the reason about their rise. The second and third chapter defines the¤h/shi/¡¦s behavior, method of debating, and the result of lobby to analyze their motivation to toward successful and avoid failure. The fourth chapter lists the standout¤h/shi/ who has the strict moral code and disdains to follow such utilitarianism. It also analyze the difference from others to discover the reason they beyond other¤h/shi/. The fifth chapter list the scholar who did the lobby behavior but not belong¿Ñ¤h/mou shi/, and define the difference by comparison above-mentioned two characters. Finally the conclusion summarizes each chapter; hope can express the different viewpoint from different aspects toµ¦¤h(tse shi).

左傳「君子曰」研究

本文係研究左傳「君子曰」之各有關問題,共一冊,約八萬字,分六章三十二節。 第一章緒論,敘述本文之研究動機及方法,並考辨「君子曰」之真偽。 第二章「君子曰」之形成,則依其引用方式之不同分為「直接引述」、「間接稱引」 兩者,並分項舉例說明之。 第三章「君子曰」之內容,依評論之重點,分為解經、預言、為政之道、為君之道、 為臣之道、交鄰國之道及論禮、義、信、仁孝、自處之道等,以明其與左傳所論實無 不同也。 第四章「君子曰」之立場與精神,先就其評論之經學立場及其所涵之意義加以分析, 次則以之與左傳所引之「仲尼曰」及公羊、穀梁二傳比較,以明其間之異同,再次則 引述前人之論「君子曰」者,釋其疑難,以明君子之評論非泛泛為之也。 第五章君子之學養,係就其評論引經之情形加以敘述,並論其評論之特色,以明君子 之學養焉。 第六章結論,縷述本文研究之結果,以知左傳乃「事義兼傳」;而由其評論立場,或 可推定其戶書時期不在戰國後期;由其所論與孔子相合,可知其亦為解經之作;而由 其體例,可知左傳於孔子「寓經於史」之義,亦有所發揚也。

Telling otherwise : rewriting history, gender, and genre in Africa and the African diaspora

“Telling Otherwise: Rewriting History, Gender, and Genre in Africa and the African Diaspora” examines counter-discursive postcolonial rewritings. In my first chapter, “Re-Writing the Canon,” I examine two works that rewrite canonical texts from the European tradition, Jean Rhys’s retelling of the life of Jane Eyre’s Bertha in Wide Sargasso Sea and Maryse Condé’s relocation of Wuthering Heights to the Caribbean in La migration des coeurs. In this chapter, I contend that re-writing functions not only as a response, as a “writing back” to the canon, but as a creative appropriation of and critical engagement with the canonical text and its worldview. My second chapter, “Re-Storying the Past,” examines fictional works that rewrite events from the historical past. The works that I study in this chapter are Assia Djebar’s recuperation of Algerian women’s resistance to French colonization in L’amour, la fantasia and Edwidge Danticat’s efforts to reconstruct the 1937 massacre of Haitians under Trujillo in The Farming of Bones. In my third chapter, “Re-Voicing Slavery,” I take for my subject neo-slave narratives that build on and revise the slave narrative genre of the late eighteenth- through early twentieth- centuries. The two works that I examine in this chapter are Sherley Anne Williams’s Dessa Rose and the poem sequence Zong! by M. NourbeSe Philip, based on the 1781 murder of Africans aboard the slave ship Zong. My fourth chapter, “Re-Membering Gender,” examines texts that foreground the processes of re-writing and re-telling, both thematically and structurally, so as to draw attention to the ways in which discourses and identities are constructed. In their attempts to counter masculinist discourses, these works seek to re-inscribe gender into these discourses, a process of re-membering that engenders a radical deconstruction of fixed notions of identity. The works that I read in this chapter include Daniel Maximin’s L’Isolé soleil, which privileges the feminine and the multiple in opposition to patriarchal notions of single origins and authoritative narrative voices and Maryse Condé’s Traversée de la Mangrove, which rewrites Patrick Chamoiseau’s novel Solibo Magnifique so as to critique the exclusive nature of Caribbean identity in his notion of créolité. / text

Listening/Reading for Disremembered Voices: Additive Archival Representation and the Zong Massacre of 1781

This thesis grapples with questions surrounding representation, mourning, and responsibility in relation to two literary representations of the ZONG massacre of 1781. These texts are M. NourbeSe Philip’s ZONG! and Fred D’Aguiar’s FEEDING THE GHOSTS. The only extant archival document—a record of the insurance dispute which ensued as a consequence of the massacre—does not represent the drowned as victims, nor can it represent the magnitude of the atrocity. As such, this thesis posits that the archival gaps or silences from which the captives’ voices are missing become spaces of possibility for additive representation. This thesis also examines the role voice and sound play in these literary texts and the deconstructive-ethical philosophies of Jean-Luc Nancy and Jacques Derrida. This thesis argues that these texts invoke the sonic materiality of voice in the service of responding to the disremembered dead through mourning and acknowledgment.
