This thesis seeks to under the relationship in architecture between the physical and the intellectual. Drawings and models are the primary mediums used in this project to bring forms in to a play of light and shadow. The building's program is dedicated to the preservation of black and white film: an expressive medium that exists, primarily, as a cultural artifact in the collective memory. / Master of Architecture

This study performed a mythic analysis on three films with child heroes including E.T.—the Extra-Terrestrial, Stand by Me, and The Goonies. Several unifying themes were extracted and then compared with the dominant values of Reagan America to determine if these films provided a unique cultural outlook. While most of the uncovered themes have been recognized in other films of the era, the theme of childhood as a community in peril is unique. It is purported these films pass judgment on Reagan as a dubious national patriarch, and that it is possible that this is a function that many myths with child heroes fulfill. / Master of Arts

This thesis describes one individual's contribution to a larger effort, an exploration that involved some thirty-two other students from the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio, Switzerland. Our shared task was to study a bucolic agrarian region of Northern Italy and propose a strategy for its development. All projects ultimately included in the Atelier's vision were to have a significant strategic value to the territory, resonating with and magnifying the landscape's existing qualities. They were to intensify its complex identity without further complicating it. Included in this document are the author's initial impressions of the region as recorded over a series of visits to the place as well as a reaction to these impressions, an architectural response in the form of a cinema multiplex over the Pavese and its fields. / Master of Architecture

Unable to compete with the prevailing Cineplexes, the Old Town becomes a spectacle of the pornographic: baring all at once, substituting base desire for refined attraction. Out of this disenchantment, an idea for a new cinema emerges- the momentous Cinema. No panorama atual é possível identificar diversos estudos que se debruçam em novas formas de ensinar história. Diante desse contexto, nos últimos anos vem ganhando importância, cada vez maior, propostas de práticas educativas associadas às Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação (TIC), dentre as quais, práticas educativas envolvendo o diálogo entre cinema e ensino de história. Com base nisso, pretendeu-se neste trabalho promover investigação científica baseada em levantamento bibliográfico e entendimento historiográfico e pedagógico dos trabalhos dedicados ao diálogo entre cinema e ensino de história, publicados nos Anais do Encontro Nacional de Pesquisadores do Ensino de História (ENPEH), ao longo do período de 1995 a 2013, visando compreender características desse campo/lugar social de pesquisa, por meio de análise indiciária. A justificativa para este tipo de estudo envolveu: 1)importância nos últimos tempos das TIC no desenvolvimento de práticas educativas, aí incluso àquelas que envolvem o cinema; 2)ausência de pesquisa recente voltada para compreensão do estado da arte de trabalhos dedicados ao diálogo entre cinema e ensino de história; e 3)importância de perscrutar os Anais do Encontro Nacional de Pesquisadores do Ensino de História (ENPEH), dado que esse é o mais representativo evento no campo do ensino de história. O referencial teórico dessa pesquisa foi... / Abstract: The history education is enclosed and constitutes the school culture and, consequently, sets a wide researching field. In the actual prospect is possible to identify many studies that rely on new ways to teach history. Before this context, in the last few years it has been getting a bigger importance, tenders of teaching practices associated with the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), such as educational practices involving the dialogue between cinema and the history teaching. On that basis, it intended with this work, to promote scientific investigation based on bibliographic survey and the historiographic and pedagogical understanding of the works dedicated to the dialogue between cinema and the history teaching, published on the Anais do Encontro Nacional de Pesquisadores do Ensino de História (ENPEH), over the period from 1995 to 2013, to further understand features of this searching field/social site, by means of indicial analysis. En el panorama actual es posible identificar diversos estudios que se inclinan en nuevas formas de enseñar historia. En este contexto, en los últimos años viene cobrando importancia, cada vez mayor, propuestas de prácticas educativas asociadas a las Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación (TIC), entre las cuales, prácticas educativas que involucran el diálogo entre cine y enseñanza de historia. A dissertação objetiva aprofundar os estudos sobre o filme Sagarana, o Duelo, do cineasta mineiro Paulo Thiago, por meio de aproximações e rupturas com a matriz literária, o conto Duelo, do livro Sagarana, contribuindo para a reflexão da obra de Guimarães Rosa em outras linguagens. Preterindo a concepção de fidelidade da adaptação, a pesquisa mostra que o filme é obra autônoma, constituído com liberdade narrativa, ao incorporar personagens e ações dramáticas de outras obras de Guimarães, na tentativa de abarcar temáticas recorrentes do escritor mineiro, tais como a jagunçagem, a violência, a força do acaso, as questões metafísicas, o arcaico e o moderno, etc. As análises e interpretações da dissertação apontam que as propostas estéticas, temáticas e formais de Sagarana, o Duelo são resultados do diálogo do jogo de intenções pessoais do diretor e do contexto histórico, cultural e social da época de sua realização, o começo da década de 1970. A pesquisa se fundamenta na ideia de que o filme é constituído de misturas, em que o cômico e o trágico, o místico e o mundo terreno e o imbricamento de gêneros se fundem na narrativa. Pretende-se mostrar como Sagarana, o Duelo incorpora aspectos do faroeste, do gesto cômico e da temática regionalista, por meio de configurações estruturais da narrativa, tais como a tessitura dramática, a dimensão espacial, a caracterização e interpretação de personagens, aspectos da fotografia e a trilha sonora. / The dissertation aims to deepen the studies of the movie Sagarana, the Duel, by the filmmaker Paulo Thiago, through approaches and ruptures with the literary reference of the tale Duel, from the book Sagarana, contributing to the reflection Guimarães Rosas work in other forms of expression. Passing over the conception of fidelity of the adaptation, research shows that the film work is autonomous, constituted with a freedom of narrative, incorporating the characters and dramatic actions of other works by Guimarães, in an attempt to cover recurring themes of the writer, such as jagunçagem, violence, the force of chance, metaphysical questions, the archaic and modern, etc. The analyzes and interpretations of the thesis show that the aesthetic proposals, thematic and formal of Sagarana, the Duel are the result of the directors dialogue in the game of personal intentions and the historical, cultural and social context of the period of its completion, the beginning of the 1970s. The research is based on the idea that the film consists of mixtures, in which the comic and tragic, the mystical and the earthly world and the interweaving of the genres merge in the narrative. It is intended to show how Sagarana, the Duel incorporates aspects of the western, the comic gesture and regionalist themes through the narratives structural configurations, such as the dramatic texture, the spatial dimension, the characterization and interpretation of characters, aspects of photography and the soundtrack.

Esse trabalho discute o foley brasileiro através da apresentação de aspectos técnicos, estéticos e históricos dessa atividade. A partir de entrevistas com profissionais da área e da experiência profissional da autora em foley, é traçado um panorama da atividade que compreende: os usos do foley na trilha sonora cinematográfica; técnicas de gravação; o desenvolvimento da atividade no país dos anos 1950 até hoje; e a observação dos estúdios e artistas de foley brasileiros mais proeminentes em atividade. / The present work discusses the Brazilian foley by presenting technical, aesthetic and historical aspects of the activity. Through interviews with foley professionals and the professional expertise of the author, this overview of Brazilian foley comprehends: the use of foley in the film soundtrack, recording techniques, the development of the activity in Brasil since the 1950´s, and the observation of the most prominent foley studios and foley artists in Brazil at the present.

A presente dissertação se dedica a mapear a organização do trabalho na atual cadeia produtiva do audiovisual na cidade de São Paulo, por meio da análise das atuais formas de produção do cinema e do atual modelo de financiamento do setor, com o objetivo de evidenciar seus principais elos e suas principais vulnerabilidades. Um setor identificado como vulnerável, porém, pouco evidenciado, está localizado no início da cadeia produtiva o desenvolvimento de projetos. Essa etapa, que inicia todo o processo do filme, está muito centrada na figura de um profissional o roteirista. Portanto, esta pesquisa está centrada na identificação da vulnerabilidade desse profissional, em suas relações de trabalho e seus níveis de relacionamento, em sua influência nos outros setores da cadeia produtiva, como também, na atual condição de trabalho que lhe é ofertada. Foram identificadas três questões centrais para justificar a atual vulnerabilidade da profissão de roteirista, que se desmembram em outros apontamentos, são elas: a disputa de autoria entre diretor e escritor no final dos anos 60 (cinema e literatura), as relações flexíveis impostas pelo novo modelo de trabalho apoiado na lógica da intermitência e fragmentação e por último, a falta de organização do profissional de roteiro enquanto categoria. / This thesis aims at drawing a map of the current state of the audiovisual industry productive chain in the city of São Paulo. I shall analyse the current forms of film production and the sector\'s funding model, seeking to outline its most relevant nodes and its main vulnerabilities. One particular aspect that has been identified as vulnerable, while rarely identified, is located at the beginning of the productive chain: project development. This stage, which upstarts the whole film process, is very centered on one sole professional: the writer. Therefore, this research is oriented at the identification of vulnerabilities pertaining to this professional in particular, in their work relations and levels of relationship, in their influence on other sectors of the production chain, as well as in the current working conditions offered to them. Three main questions have been identified, which explain the current vulnerability of the writer profession. These questions are developed into other remarks. The three questions are namely: the dispute surrounding authorship, between director and writer, at the end of the 1960s (cinema and literature); the flexible relations imposed by the new working model supported by the logic of precariousness and fragmentation; and the lack of professional organizations among writers as a social category.

O objetivo desta tese é estudar os códigos do melodrama a partir das análises de quatro filmes históricos do cineasta Steven Spielberg: Amistad (1997), Lincoln (2012), A Lista de Schindler (1993) e O Resgate do Soldado Ryan (1998). Os títulos selecionados são reconstruções cinematográficas de acontecimentos históricos que abordam momentos emblemáticos da história americana: a escravidão e a figura de Lincoln, a participação na Segunda Guerra Mundial e o extermínio dos judeus pelos nazistas. Nossa preocupação foi a de apontar como o melodrama funde-se e se impõe sobre outros gêneros, como o drama histórico, o biopic, o Holocaust Film e o war film. As polarizações entre virtude e vilania, as surpresas e obstáculos no enredo, o jogo com as emoções dos personagens e do público e as resoluções sentimentais, próprias do melodrama, em suas distintas concepções teóricas, manifestam-se cinematograficamente e de forma autoral na construção dos planos, enquadramentos, movimentos de câmera e sobretudo na referência ao olhar e às imagens. Paralelamente à análise, trazemos contribuições de historiadores e críticos que se posicionam sobre os filmes, o que resulta em um confronto instigante entre história e liberdades ficcionais próprias ao cinema de consumo massivo. / The aim of this thesis is to study the codes of the melodrama from the analyzes of four historical films of filmmaker Steven Spielberg: Amistad (1997), Lincoln (2012), Schindler\'s List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). The titles selected are cinematic reconstructions of historical events that touch on emblematic moments in American history: slavery and the figure of Lincoln, participation in World War II, and extermination of Jews by the Nazis. Our concern was to point out how the melodrama merges and imposes itself on other genres, such as historical drama, biopic, Holocaust Film and war film. The polarizations between virtue and villainy, the surprises and obstacles in the plot, the play with the emotions of the characters and the public and the sentimental resolutions, proper to the melodrama, in their different theoretical conceptions, are manifested cinematographically and in an authorial way in the construction of the plans, frames, camera movements and above all in reference to the look and the images. Parallel to the analysis, we bring contributions from historians and critics who stand on the films, which results in an instigating confrontation between history and fictional freedoms proper to the mass consumer cinema
