La réception des Ballets russes à Madrid et Barcelone (1916-1929) / The reception of the Ballets Russes in Madrid and Barcelona (1916 – 1929) / La recepción de los Ballets russes en Madrid y Barcelona (1916 - 1929)

Frison, Hélène 29 November 2014 (has links)
The Ballets Russes company was founded by Diaghilev in 1911, and marked a turning point in the history of the Western European stage art. Taking up the Gesamtkunstwerk, the company offered shows composed by painters, choreographers and musicians. Their success was immediate and their influence was decisive. This work will examine how the Ballets Russes were received in Spain. The Spanish peninsula offered a fertile ground for exchange while Europe was at war, with the country's intellectuals wondering about how to renew the theatre scene and being receptive to foreign experiments on the matter. The ballets offered by the company reflected those concerns by addressing the question of the role of tradition within modernity as well as the concepts of nationalism and cosmopolitism while managing to find an audience abroad. This study aims at confronting the simultaneous reception of the Ballets Russes in the two cultural capitals of Spain at a time when regionalism was becoming increasingly strong. The first part will give a description of the Spanish theatre and arts scene. The second part will be entirely dedicated to the company’s first season in Spain (1916) and to the debates it raised. The third and fourth parts will deal with the way the ballets were received and understood in Madrid and Barcelona, through a presentation of the particularities of each of these two cultural capitals.

Bleaching To Reach: Skin Bleaching as a Performance of Embodied Resistance in Jamaican Dancehall Culture

Harris, Treviene A 14 January 2014 (has links)
This thesis examines how skin bleaching can be understood within the cultural context of Jamaican dancehall. I argue that as a cultural practice, skin bleaching can be viewed as a critique of the concomitant structural inequalities precipitated by colorism, which is a by-product of racism. In proposing skin bleaching as a queer performance of color, I attempt to illustrate the manner in which the lightening of the skin exposes the instability of racism and colorism as socially constructed, discursive regimes. If race and skin color are biological and embodied facts dictated by social reality, then bodies, which are racially marked and colored subjects, can be used to project counter discourses that challenge these specific regimes. The space of discursive limit imposed on the racialized or colored body-subject is a space from which critiques of dominant discourses can be projected, and bleaching does precisely that. I conclude therefore, that skin bleaching is performed resistance which challenges the dominating discourses on race by first destabilizing the notion that skin color is an immutable biological fact, and second by contesting subsequent discourses that are contingent on the “facts” of color and race.

The office; A factor for success : A study about offices impact on their staff and ways to make TM-Konsults office in Härnösand a better workplace

Norberg, Martin January 2013 (has links)
TM Konsult is a Norrland-based architect and engineering company operating in all disciplines in the early stages and project management. The office is from a strategic point of view important for the company. To ensure that the competitiveness of the office is in line with the required, actions needs to be taken. An office that attracts the staff needed is necessary for the office to grow. This thesis investigates the possibilities regarding a modernization of TM Konsults premises in Härnösand. SPEED AND RESOLUTION IN THE AGE OF TECHNOLOGICAL REPRODUCIBILITY

TAYLOR, SHAWN 01 January 2015 (has links)
The rate of acceleration of the biologic and synthetic world has for a while now, been in the process of exponentially speeding up, maxing out servers and landfills, merging with each other, destroying each other. The last prehistoric relics on Earth are absorbing the same oxygen, carbon dioxide and electronic waves in our biosphere as us. A degraded .jpeg enlarged to full screen on a Samsung 4K UHD HU8550 Series Smart TV - 85” Class (84.5” diag.). Within this composite ecology, the ancient limestone of the grand canyon competes with the iMax movie of itself, the production of Mac pros, a YouTube clip from Jurassic park, and the super bowl halftime show. A search engines assistance with biographic memory helps our bodies survive new atmospheres and weigh the gravities that exist around the versions of an objects materiality. Communication has moved from our vocal chords, to swipes and taps of our thumbs on a screen that predicts the weather, accesses the hidden, invisible, and withdrawn information from the objects around us, and still ducks up what we are trying to say. This txt was written on a tablet returned to stock settings and embedded with content to mine the experience in which mediated technology creates, communicates and obscures new forms of language. Life in a new event horizon — a dimensional dualism that finds us competing for genetic and mimetic survival — we are now functioning as different types of humans.

Recovery From Design

Ellison, Cassandra J 01 January 2017 (has links)
Through research, inquiry, and an evaluation of Recovery By Design, a ‘design therapy’ program that serves people with mental illness, substance use disorders, and developmental disabilities, it is my assertion that the practice of design has therapeutic potential and can aid in the process of recovery. To the novice, the practices of conception, shaping form, and praxis have empowering benefit especially when guided by Conditional and Transformation Design methods together with an emphasis on materiality and vernacular form.

Gegen(-) Abwesenheiten / Memoria-Generationen und mediale Verfahrensweisen kontra erzwungenes Verschwinden ; (Argentinien 1976 - 1996 - 2006)

Bolte, Rike 18 February 2014 (has links)
Jahrhundert liefern. / During the Argentinean dictatorship (1976-1983), tens of thousands of people were kept in secret camps, were tortured, murdered, and ''disappeared''. Most cases are difficult to reconstruct. Many of the offenders have remained unpunished. The term "forced disappearance" (Spanish desaparición forzada) was introduced for this act of state terrorism. This study addresses medial and esthetic processes that were developed in light of the debate on desaparición forzada in Argentina. At the heart of the study is the hypothesis that the violent ''depresentation'' of the victims has led to ''cognitive murder'' ("percepticidio"). The media strategy and esthetic productions analyzed in the study represent the current state of the art of the trans-generational cultural work on cognition relevant social and political experiences. The productions in the field of the study of narration, poetry, photography, film, and theater have emerged in context of the post 1989 memory-boom and digital globalization. Félix Bruzzone, Mariana Enríquez und Martín Gambarotta, Virginia Giannoni, and Lucila Quieto as well as Albertina Carri and Lola Arias have conceptualized counter(re)presentations to violent disappearance which proceed materially, meta-medially, and counter-informatively. Following introductions on discourse analysis, representation theory, and media theory as well as a number of terminology definitions, the study analyzes the above mentioned productions created by a post dictatorship generation, which are being referred to as the "Camada Cadáver", and shows that the ''phenomenon'' of forced disappearance, which leads to a repeated lack of reference, has motivated esthetic strategies that are to be classified as exemplarily emergent and experimental, because they have produced new insights for the unfinished research on one of the many terror regimes of the twentieth century.
