Ely, Cristina January 2016 (has links)
Colors are an important part of our lives, as are the products and objects that surround us, and as time went by, they could be offered in a multiple array of colors. Looking at the activities of a product designer, this study sought out understanding how the selection of color in a project of a product can be oriented towards common well-being. To achieve this, an applied research was done, interviewing professors and designers, looking into the process of selection of colors made by local designers, articulated with the emotional potential that emerges by colors on products. This study shows as a result e theoretical model about the influence of color on the emotional relations with the products, that presents itself in two dimensions: color as a stimulus and color as an experience itself. Furthermore, it presents through a map, a suggestion on the process of color selection on the product project. Besides that the differences between professors and designers colors choosing methods will be presented at the end, a process of color selection will be presented through a map.

Lundberg, Rebecca January 2018 (has links)

Elaboration et normalisation d'un test clinique visant à évaluer les troubles émotionnels / Development and standardization of a clinical test to assess emotional disorders

Gros, Auriane 04 December 2015 (has links)
Emotions are all different, and the emotional experience varies from one person to another. It is essential to regulate our emotions because, at certain intensities, they can disrupt our body, our thoughts and our actions. Thus, emotion regulation is as essential to our personal balance as emotional experience. But certain diseases can damage the emotional network, and disrupt the interaction between emotional experience and emotion regulation. Currently the assessment of emotions is mainly based on tasks testing our ability to recognize or express them. And, even if emotion regulation capabilities are increasingly a matter of interest, they are currently measured outside any emotional context and through self-report scales, which have a number of biases. The objective of this thesis is to develop, standardize and validate a test based on a time estimation task to assess the emotional experience and emotion regulation when the emotion occurs. Our goal is to provide clinicians with a new tool to measure emotions, in order to ascertain, therefore improving the quality of life of patients suffering from these disorders the presence of certain disorders which are currently not evaluated by existing tests. We hope that highlighting the presence of these disorders will help to work on the possibilities of care and support.

Aspectos acústicos da fala na representação teatral das emoções / Acoustic aspects of speech in the theatrical representation of emotions

Vassoler, Aline Mara de Oliveira 10 June 2011 (has links)
This study investigated emotional differences by means of acoustical aspects of speech in theatrical representations of emotions in Brazilian Portuguese (PB), above all the behavior of the fundamental frequency (F0 ) and the aspects of intonation of the four emotions: happiness, anger, fear and sadness and of neutral speech. Although the concept of emotion is difficult to define, supporting theories have been sought in consecrated authors such as SCHERER (1985) EKMAN (1984), DESCARTES (1988) and other representatives of Semiotic Passion such as GREIMAS; FONTANILLE (1998) who are still known as passions showing immature physiological inference although of a great descriptive value. The F0, the intensity of the voice, the rate of speech (LAUKKA, 1994) and spectral energy (BANSE; SCHERER, 1996) are the parameters most closely related to emotions as they are values that express the changes in breathing, phonetics and articulations of the individual. Intonation, represented acoustically by the variation of F0 is also frequently used to differentiate emotions as these are related to the vocal expression of the speaker. A speech sample was produced by three professional actresses aged between 40 and 50 with an average of 20 years in the profession. The voices were recorded in the laboratory of Studio Multimeios in the Electronic Computation Center of the University of São Paulo (CCE-USP) using Sound Forge 9 software for sound editing. The actresses read the text (corpus) in a neutral voice and then interpreted the emotions of happiness, anger, fear and sadness, repeating them five times for each interpretation including the neutral speech, making a total of 25 recordings for each actress. Support was sought for similarities sustained by Semiotic Passion, to justify the choice of emotion presented by the actors instead of spontaneous speech and the emotion evoked. The corpus used in this research was a text already used in FIGUEIREDO (1993), one of the reasons for this choice being the fact that it is an arid text which does not evoke emotions when reading. It was necessary to divide the text into smaller linguistic units (three sentences) in order to analyze the data more efficiently. The theoretical basis for this stage of research of dividing up the text is prosodic phonology as proposed by Nespor and Vogel (1986). In order to obtain the values of F0, the sentences were divided into still smaller units (syllables). In order to obtain the values of F0 and an intonation curve, the software Praat.5.1.23 was used and the scripts correlated. The data was submitted to a descriptive statistic. The actresses SL and KK interpreted happiness at a higher frequency range, followed by anger. Only the actress AA interpreted fear with average F0 values, lower than all the other emotions including neutral speech. The behavior of F0 corroborates the researched literature. By means of the study of intonation of the four emotional sentences and the neutral speech, it was possible to identify the interference of emotion in the linguistic aspects of the sentence, mainly fear as the declarative sentences of Brazilian Portuguese were expected to be descending curves and not ascending as was the case for this emotion. The results of these studies contribute to the differentiation of emotions; however it is necessary to include more subjects and to analyze them with more detail from a statistical point of view.

Emotion recognition and set shifting in women with anorexia nervosa

Hall, Royston January 2018 (has links)
Objective: Neuropsychology models of anorexia nervosa (AN) propose that cognitive difficulties including poor Emotion Recognition (ER) and set-shifting ability may be central to the development and maintenance of eating pathology. This study aimed to test the central positions of such models by assessing specific ER difficulties in AN as well as the relationship between ER deficits and set-shifting performance. Methods: Fifty-one women were assessed (25 with AN; M = 28.20 SD = 8.69 and 26 control M = 21.27 SD = 5.10) on a novel measure of ER, a set-shifting test and self-report questionnaires concerning co-morbid factors. Results: The data did not reveal a global difference in ER or set-shifting performance between groups. Specific hypotheses of ER deficits in AN were also not met as performance on individual emotions was comparable between groups. There was an unexpected negative correlation between disgust recognition and set-shifting performance, however, this was only significant across the whole sample. ER performance was not related with any confounding factors. Conclusions: Despite an abundance of research supporting the position of social cognitive difficulties in AN, the current study failed to find global or specific deficits in ER in the present sample. Similarly, ER performance was not related to set-shifting as proposed by neuropsychological models of AN aetiology. Possible explanations for a lack of difference observed using this novel ER task are explored and future directions for evaluating ER in AN are discussed.

A psychological exploration of Night Eating Syndrome

Shillito, James January 2016 (has links)
This thesis has been prepared in a paper based format and comprises of three stand-alone papers. Paper 1, a systematic review; Paper 2, an empirical study; and Paper 3, a critical appraisal and reflection of the work. Paper 1 has been prepared for submission to Appetite. The paper presents a systematic literature review of studies measuring or reporting potential psychological mechanisms within Night Eating Syndrome (NES). Databases were systematically searched and 20 studies were included in the review. The quality of evidence was mixed and NES was identified and diagnosed in a variety of ways. Studies utilised a variety of different instruments to identify thirteen psychological mechanisms. Syntheses of the studies suggest that there are distinct overlapping features within these mechanisms and five overarching themes were identified to accommodate these overlapping features. Suggestions are made relating to the potential function of the identified psychological mechanisms within NES.Paper 2 has been prepared for submission to Appetite. The paper is a qualitative study exploring the relationship between NES and the experience of emotion specifically from the perspective of patients identified as obese. Ten participants were interviewed and a constructivist grounded theory approach was used to analyse transcripts. A key category to emerge from the analysis was termed 'Emotional Hunger'; reflecting an urge or need to satiate a set of underlying unmet emotional needs. 'Emotional hunger' was underpinned by the following six interrelated themes: (1) The development of a relationship with food; (2) Loss; (3) The significance of night time; (4) A separation of the body and mind; (5) Why I eat, not what I eat; and (6) Consequences of night eating. The clinical implications of the findings are discussed with reference to existing literature. Paper 3 is not intended for publication. The paper provides a critical review of the research process, in which the strengths and weaknesses of the systematic review and empirical study are discussed. Personal and professional reflections on the experience of conducting a systematic review and an empirical study are explored. The clinical implications of the research are also discussed.

Testing the neurocognitive model of antidepressant treatment

Warren, Matthew January 2016 (has links)
The neurocognitive model of antidepressant treatment action states that antidepressants work by producing relatively immediate positive shifts in emotional processing, which translate into clinical improvement with time. Short-term or even acute doses of antidepressants can, for example, increase memory for positive self-referent words or decrease amygdala activation to fearful faces, and these early changes correlate with later clinical improvement. However, there are a number of ways in which the model needs further probing. The aim of this thesis was to test the neurocognitive model by: 1) investigating whether changes in emotional processing occur in an antidepressant with a novel mechanism of action, St John's wort, as the model predicts; and 2) examining whether there is a comparable pattern of neuropsychological changes to citalopram in a population of high neurotic volunteers, whose baseline emotional biases may make them a more ideal group in which to study drug effects. We found that seven days of St John's wort produced similar changes to other antidepressants, for example reducing recognition of disgusted faces and attention to fearful faces while increasing memory for positive words. The drug did not affect other aspects of cognition including working memory and reward learning. These findings support the theory that early psychological changes are a common feature of all antidepressants. On the other hand, four weeks of citalopram treatment produced apparently contradictory effects in high neurotics, increasing memory for positive words but also increasing recognition of negative facial expressions. Neuroimaging data showed that high neurotics had greater response to neutral faces in emotional processing areas compared to low neurotics, which was reduced with citalopram. High neurotics also showed increased resting state connectivity in default mode network areas and between amygdala and cortical areas, which was again reduced with citalopram. We suggest that in this group citalopram corrects general negative emotional processing biases, but also works to decrease a natural aversion to particularly threatening socially-relevant stimuli. Overall this thesis supports the idea that early changes in emotional processing are vital for antidepressant action, but also suggests that in certain groups such as high neurotics, some changes may be more nuanced than previously reported and warrant further scrutiny.

Celebrities’ Climate Change Advocacy on Twitter and its Effects on Public Perception and Behavioral Change

Park, Sejung 08 August 2017 (has links)
This research adds the growing body of literature on the role of celebrities as emergent spokespersons in climate advocacy and the process and consequences of its effects on public attitudes and behaviors to resolve the climate crisis. By applying social cognitive theory in conjunction with emotional appeals and language styles as message frames, the study examines the effects of role-modeling in adoption of eco-attitudes and behaviors. In a 2 x 2 design, the independent variables were emotion frame (fear, hope) and celebrity involvement frame (first person pronouns; FPP, non-first person pronouns; NFPP). For the manipulation check, the tweets were pilot tested. The main study was an experiment that asked participants to read tweets attributed to Leonardo DiCaprio or Pharrell Williams. Four main dependent variables were attitudes toward climate change mitigation and three behaviors, including support for government action, intention to engage in sustainable behavior, and intention to participate in activism for climate change mitigation. The role of two mediating variables (risk awareness, response efficacy) and one moderating variable, parasocial interaction (PSI) with the celebrity, were also examined. First, one-way ANCOVAs compared the effects of emotion frames to the control group. No evidence of the effects of emotion frame over unrelated messages on any dependent variables was found. Second, 2 (fear vs hope) x 2 (FPP vs NFPP) ANCOVAs found that fear-framed messages were more effective than hope-framed messages in driving intention for participation in activism, but emotion frame did not affect any other variables. The results also found that FPP frames led to more positive attitude (compared to NFPP frames), but had no effect on behaviors. Third, regression analyses found no evidence that risk awareness or response efficacy mediated the effect of emotion frames on attitudes or behaviors. In addition, the study discovered that PSI was a strong positive predictor of attitudes and all behaviors, but PSI did not moderate the impact of the celebrity involvement frame. The findings provide empirical evidence of the potential for celebrities to serve as role models in climate advocacy by psychologically involving people, which can be translated to the adoption of attitudes and behaviors.

Působení reklamních sdělení na cílovou skupinu / The influence of advertising messages on the target audience

Lejčková, Radka January 2010 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the influence which the advertising messages have on the target audience. In the theoretical part I analyze the way in which people are deciding. I emphasize the growing role of emotions. Furthermore I describe recommendations how to create textual and visual parts of the advertising messages. In the practical part I verify how these recommendations actually influence the selected group. For this purpose I use the group interview. In addition I make interviews with professionals to clarify if the early mentioned recommendations are applicable in practise.
