"Pasted Up and Printed Out": Watchmen as Ontographic Network

This thesis explores Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' 1986-87 comic book series Watchmen according to its network structure, paying particular attention to page layout and the establishment of or deviation from the nine-panel "waffle iron" grid. This reading aims to better understand the comic book form, connecting the work of comics theorist Theirry Groensteen to certain elements of actor-network theory and Ian Bogost's notion of the ontograph--a map of being that emphasizes the interobjectivity of networked nodes. This thesis explores the ontographic nature of the comic book form more generally before tracing the meta-textual ontograph in Watchmen. The thesis then examines the network within the single panel, the multi-panel page layout, and the collaborative network of artist and author. Finally, this thesis explores how Watchmen as an ontograph exploits the affordances of the comic book form in order to construct creative temporalities.

Styrning av förbättringsarbete på akutmottagningar : En studie om möjliggörande och tvingande styrning / Management of process-improvements in emergency departments : A study about enabling and coercive control

Bakgrund: Sjukvården i Sveriges står inför en problematik, vilken kan hänföras till få vårdplatser och knappa resurser, vilket i sin tur lett till överbelastade akutmottagningar. Denna problematik ställer krav på att utveckla förbättringar i syfte att öka effektiviteten och kvaliteten på mottagningarna. Styrningen av förbättringsprocesser består av både möjliggörande och tvingande inslag, vilka kan komma att antingen samspela eller ge upphov till styrspänningar.  Syfte: Syftet med studien är att identifiera och analysera olika aspekter av förbättringsarbete på akutmottagningar, såsom hur de styrs och dess potentiella utmaningar. Studien syftar även till att undersöka de anställdas upplevelser av de möjliggörande och tvingande inslagen av styrningen samt ge förslag på hur styrningen av förbättringsarbete kan utvecklas i framtiden.  Metod: Studien har innefattat semistrukturerade intervjuer med diverse chefer, läkare, sjuksköterskor och politiker i Region Kronoberg och Region Kalmar, vilket gör det till en multipel flerfallstudie av kvalitativ karaktär. I metodavsnittet beskrivs det hur det empiriska materialet samlats in. Slutsats: Förbättringsarbete analyserades utifrån aspekterna: kvalitet, flöde och effektivitet, där det tydliggjordes hur förbättringsarbetet består av att möta de utmaningar som finns samtidigt som kostnadseffektivitet och vårdkvalitet behövs tas i beaktning. Vidare identifierades möjliggörande styrning på akutmottagningarna i form av värdegrunden och visionen, och i den professionella autonomin. Den tvingande styrningen kunde istället ses i budgeten och verksamhetsplaner, regler och riktlinjer samt i RETTS-systemet. Fem stycken styrspänningar identifierades mellan professionell autonomi och formella regelverk, personalbrist och överbelastning, effektiviseringskrav och resursbrist, läkare och sjuksköterskor, samt medicinsk personal och administrativa samt politiska aktörer. Dessa spänningar och relationer mellan aktörerna i regionerna förklarades med hjälp av aktör-nätverksteori. / Background: Swedish healthcare is facing problems associated with few hospital beds and scarce resources, which in turn has led to an overload in the emergency departments. This issue has created a demand for process improvement aimed at increasing the efficiency and quality of the emergency departments. Management of process improvement consists of both enabling and coercive elements, which may either interact or create tensions in governance. Purpose: The purpose of the essay is to identify and analyze various aspects of improvement work in emergency departments, such as how it is managed and its potential challenges. The study also aims to examine employees’ experiences of the enabling and coercive elements of management, and to provide suggestions on how the controls can be developed in the future. Method: The study has involved semi-structured interviews with various managers, physicians, nurses and politicians in Region Kronoberg and Region Kalmar, making it a multiple case study of qualitative nature. The methodology section describes how the empirical data was collected.  Conclusion: Improvement work was analyzed based on the aspects of quality, patient flow and efficiency, clarifying how the improvement work consists of meeting the challenges that exist while at the same time taking cost efficiency and quality of care into account. Furthermore, enabling control was identified in emergency departments in the form of the value and vision, and in the professional autonomy. Coercive controls could instead be seen in the budget, the operational plans, rules and guidelines, and the RETTS-system. Five tensions were identified between professional autonomy and formal regulations, staff shortages and overcrowding, efficiency demands and resource shortages, doctors and nurses, and medical staff and administrative as well as political actors. These tensions and relationships between actors in the regions were explained using actor-network theory.

De la théorie des coûts de transaction à une économie des coûts de traduction : l’émergence d’un centre de services mutualisés comme dispositif de contrôle inter-organisationnel / From transaction cost economics to translation cost economy : the emergence of a shared service center as an inter-organizational control device

Cette thèse étudie la période de transition associée à l’externalisation d’une activité d’une organisation vers une autre et a pour objectif de décrire la manière dont un dispositif de contrôle hybride entre marché et hiérarchie émerge au cours de cette période. Pour ce faire, nous nous sommes appuyé sur une étude in situ de quinze mois d’un projet mondial d’externalisation de l’activité IT d’un client auprès de trois centres de services mutualisés d’un prestataire. La description du terrain s’articule autour de deux voies de passage conceptuelles ancrées dans l’Actor Network Theory. La première propose de partir de la Théorie des Coûts de Transaction pour aller vers une « économie des coûts de traduction ». La seconde avance le concept d’accumulation de petits points de contrôle fondée sur l’étude d’un « contrôle en train de se faire » (Vosselman & Van der Meer-Kooistra, 2006). La description de la phase de transition émet l’idée que les coûts de traduction et l’accumulation de petits points de contrôle forment un « registre en double » permettant de tracer le mouvement de co-construction de la prestation de services et du dispositif de contrôle associé. Au cours de cette période, les faits locaux furent circonscrits par l’équipe projet pour les ramener au sein du centre de services mutualisés. Ce travail permit d’amorcer un cycle d’accumulation des connaissances. Ce mouvement rendit progressivement le projet et la prestation de services plus réels, mais au prix d’un éloignement irrémédiable avec ce qui avait été spécifié dans le contrat. Dorénavant, le coût pour agir à distance était réduit et le centre de services mutualisés pouvait a priori être considéré comme un dispositif « économe ». Cependant, le processus d’externalisation conduisit à une transformation profonde de l’activité externalisée et de l’identité des différents groupes d’acteurs associés. La comparaison entre les deux situations, avant et après l’externalisation, était rendue complexe du fait de l’existence des coûts de traduction inhérents au passage du contrat au dispositif sociotechnique nécessaire à la réalisation de la prestation de services. / This dissertation is dedicated to the transition period related to the outsourcing of an activity from an organization to another one. Its objective is to describe the emergence of a hybrid control device between market and hierarchy. We studied during 15 months a global IT outsourcing project from a client to three customers’ shared service centers. The field analysis is based on two “conceptual ways” grounded in Actor Network Theory. The first moves from Transaction Cost Economics to “Translation Cost Economy”. The second one puts forward the concept of small points of control accumulation responding to Vosselman & Van der Meer-Kooistra’s call to investigate “control in the making” (2006). The transition phase shed light on the proposition that costs of translation and small points of control accumulation created a “double register” tracing the movement of services co-construction and the related control device emergence. The local facts were framed by the project team and brought into one of the shared IT service center. An accumulation cycle of knowledge was running. This movement made both the project and the service actual but at the cost of translating the initial service defined by the contract. The price to act at distance was reduced and the shared IT service center could be considered as “economic”. However, the outsourcing process led to a transformation of the IT activity and modified the identity of the groups of actors. The comparison between the two situations, before and after outsourcing, was made difficult because of translation costs inherent to the transformation of the contract into a socio-technical device implemented to deliver the service.

Le rôle de la technologie dans la construction des représentations et des pratiques de la relation client : le cas des progiciels CRM / The role of technology in the construction of customer relationship representations and practices : the case of CRM software packages

Alors que les outils de gestion envahissent les organisations, nous en savons encore très peu sur la manière dont ils agissent sur les habitudes de penser, sur les façons de faire et sur les comportements.Cette thèse s'intéresse au rôle des progiciels CRM dans la construction des représentations et des pratiques de la relation client. Ces progiciels sont étudiés à deux niveaux: celui de l'espace professionnel des Directeurs commerciaux et celui d'une organisation. Tout d'abord, à partir de l'analyse, entre 1990 et 2009, d'une revue professionnelle destinée aux Directeurs commerciaux, nous montrons l'institutionnalisation des progiciels CRM et que cette institutionnalisation s'est accompagnée d'un déplacement des représentations relatives à ce qui est considéré comme une "bonne" gestion de la relation client. Parallèlement, nous avons mené une étude de cas en profondeur sur dix ans, rendant compte de la mise en oeuvre et de l'utilisation d'un progiciel CRM particulier. Nous montrons que la mise en oeuvre d'un progiciel CRM requiert un processus de traduction continu. Puis, nous mettons en évidence plusieurs transformations des pratiques dont certaines n'étaient pas attendues. Les transformations touchent la connaissance client et son partage, ainsi que les modes de contrôle à l'oeuvre dans l'organisation. Au-delà des transformations des pratiques en matière de contrôle hiérarchique, le progiciel CRM a notamment favorisé la mise en place de deux nouveaux modes de contrôle: un contrôle latéral (entre pairs) et un contrôle transversal (entre fonctions). Notre recherche s'inscrit dans la lignée des travaux qui considèrent que les outils de gestion, et plus globalement les artefacts, méritent qu'on leur accorde une attention plus grande. Nous illustrons plus largement dans ce travail l'intérêt d'aborder les processus organisationnels en prenant au sérieux les objets techniques indissociables de l'action. En les prenant comme points d'entrée, il est possible de documenter des phénomènes jusqu'alors peu explorés / Though management tools are more and more present in organizations, little is known on how they act on mindsets, on habits and on behaviours.This dissertation focuses on the role of CRM software packages in the construction of customer relationship representations and practices. These software packages were studied at two different levels: the sales director community and an organization. First of all, a professional journal analysis between 1990 and 2009 was conducted. The results show that CRM software packages were institutionalized and that this institutionalization comes with a shift in the representations of what is considered as "good" customer relationship management. Then, a ten year in-depth case study of the implementation and the use of a CRM software package was conducted.The results show that the implementation of a CRM software package requires a continuous translation process. They also highlight some changes in practices, of which some are unintended. The changes are related to customer knowledge, its sharing and the modes of control inside the firm. Beyond changes in hierarchical control, the CRM software package leads to the implementation of two new modes of control: a lateral control(between peers) and a transversal control (between functions). This research is in line with the literature that considers that more attention has to be paid to management tools, and more generally to artefacts. We illustrate more broadly in this dissertation the interest of addressing organizational processes by taking seriously the technical objects indissociable from action. Taking them as a starting point for research could be a mean to inform currently underexplored phenomena

Media som kritisk granskare : en kvalitativ studie om medierapporteringen av hållbarhet / Media as a critical scrutinizer : a qualitative study on media reporting of sustainability

Under de senaste decennierna har hållbarhetsrelaterade ämnen tagit allt större plats, både inom vetenskapen och också populärvetenskapen. Tidigare forskning visar att hållbarhetsredovisning och hållbarhetsarbete oftast studeras ur ett företagsperspektiv. Media är en viktig intressent för företag och är en av de främsta kommunikationsvägarna mellan företag och deras andra intressenter. Medias rapportering är på så sätt värdefull för båda parter. Vi har därför valt att utifrån ett intressentperspektiv studera medias rapportering av företags arbete med hållbarhet. Syftet med studien är att utifrån ett intressentperspektiv bidra med kunskap om medias roll som kritisk granskare i rapporteringen av hållbarhetsredovisning och hållbarhetsarbete. Resultatet visar att media inte axlar rollen som kritisk granskare fullt ut då rapporteringen inte är särskilt omfattande. Vi har genomfört en kvalitativ innehållsanalys av nyhetsartiklar från dagspress utifrån en abduktiv ansats. Studien har en tvärsnittsdesign i vår kvalitativa metodansats. Vår analys kan likställas med tematisk analys, då vi har skapat teman med tillhörande underkategorier för att koda vårt material. Studien utgår från tre tidningar för att fånga variationen som finns i sättet media kommunicerar och har ett interpretativistiskt angreppssätt med inspiration från det hermeneutiska perspektivet. Analysmodellen har utvecklats utifrån den teoretiska referensramen som består av litteraturöversikt och teorier. Vår forskning visar att nyhetsartiklar i regel är legitimitetsstjälpande för det omskrivna företaget. Nyhetsartiklarna berör både allmänna och specifika områden kopplat till hållbarhet och inkluderar vanligtvis opartiska röster som kommenterar texterna. Vidare kan vi konstatera att sökningen efter nyhetsartiklar utifrån våra kriterier genererade färre sökträffar än väntat. Med det sagt rapporterar media om hållbarhetsredovisning och hållbarhetsarbete i lägre grad än förväntat. I synnerhet är rapporteringen kring hållbarhetsredovisning mycket låg. Därmed kan vi påvisa att medias roll som kritisk granskare i rapporteringen av hållbarhetsredovisning och hållbarhetsarbete i nuläget är försumbar. / Over the past decades, sustainability-related subjects have become more significant, both in science and in popular science. Previous research shows that sustainability reports and sustainability work are usually studied from a business perspective. Media is an important stakeholder for businesses and is often one of the main intermediator between companies and its other stakeholders, making its reporting valuable to both parties. We have therefore chosen to adapt a stakeholder perspective that of the media is the main focus. The purpose of this study is to throughout a stakeholder perspective contribute knowledge about the role of media as a critical scrutinizer in the reporting of sustainability reports and sustainability work. The result shows that media does not take on the role as a critical scrutinizer to the fullest since the reporting is not particularly extensive. We have conducted a qualitative content analysis of popular science articles based on an abductive approach. We applied a cross-sectional design in our qualitative methodology. Our analysis can be compared to the thematic analysis, since we created themes with associated subcategories to encode our material. We based the study on three newspapers to capture the variation in the way media communicates. We adopted an interpretative approach with inspiration from the hermeneutical perspective. Our analysis model was developed based on the theoretical frame of reference based on our literature review and theories. Our research shows that news articles generally weakens the legitimacy regarding the current company. The news articles concern both general and specific areas linked to sustainability and usually include impartial voices that comment on the texts. Furthermore, we can find that the search for news articles based on our criteria generated fewer hits than we expected. In addition to this, the media coverage of sustainability reports and work is far less extensive than expected. In particular, the contribution from media on sustainability reporting is almost non-existent. Thus, we can demonstrate that the role of media as a critical scrutinizer in the reporting of sustainability reports and sustainability work in the present is negligible.

Cette recherche s'intéresse aux matériaux de construction et aux architectes. Elle explore les circuits le long desquels circulent les matériaux et étudie les dispositifs dont ils sont munis pour rendre cette circulation possible. Elle se penche sur les rôles que jouent et sur ceux que pourraient jouer les concepteurs au sein de ces circuits et en regard de ces dispositifs.<p>Ce travail s'inscrit dans le cadre d'une réflexion sur les pratiques de l'aménagement de l'espace bâti. Au cours de son trajet entre son site de production et celui de sa mise en œuvre (c'est-à-dire le chantier de construction) – et même au-delà, lorsqu'une transformation libère des éléments constructifs – un matériau passe par de nombreuses étapes. Parmi toutes celles-ci, le passage par le moment de la conception est un élément central de cette recherche (même si d'autres étapes seront également explorées au fil de pages de ce travail). Quels rôles les concepteurs jouent-ils au sein de ces vastes assemblages d'acteurs et de dispositifs qui se déploient le long des trajectoires des matériaux de construction ? Comment les concepteurs sont-ils affectés par ces assemblages et comment peuvent-ils les affecter en retour ?<p>Répondre à ces questions engage une exploration des principales trajectoires des matériaux de construction et un examen attentif des dispositifs dont ils sont munis au fil de ce processus. C'est ce à quoi s'attache la première partie de cette recherche, dont la portée est plutôt descriptive. Mais elle ne s'arrête pas à ce stade. Elle comporte également une seconde partie, plus prospective et critique. Cette recherche propose en effet d'explorer certaines pistes de reconfiguration au sein de ces assemblages. Elle examine plusieurs questions touchant aux limites des circuits de l'économie matérielle : par quelles modifications faudrait-il en passer pour que des matériaux actuellement exclus des circuits les plus courants de l'économie matérielle puissent malgré tout y circuler ? D'autres arrière-plans axiologiques pourraient-ils être mis en jeu dans les circuits de l'économie matérielle ?<p>La présente recherche repose sur l'hypothèse que les concepteurs peuvent effectivement contribuer à la transformation progressive des circuits de l'économie matérielle. It examines the circuits along which the materials circulates and it studies the devices that are embedded in the materials in order to render this circulation feasible. It looks into the roles that are played, and those that could be played, by the designers within these circuits and in regard with these devices.<p>This work is part of a reflection on the practices of designing and constructing the built environment. During its journey between its production site and that of its implementation (i.e. the construction site) – and even beyond, when a transformation frees again constructive elements – a construction material travels through many steps. Among all these, the passage through the design process is a key element. What role do the designers perform within these networks of actors and devices? How are they affected by these assemblages and how can they affect them in return?<p>Answering these questions undertakes an exploration of the main trajectories of construction materials and of the devices that are embedded throughout these processes. This is the topic of the first part of the research. At this point, the scope is mainly descriptive. But the research goes further: it also involves a more critical and prospective dimension. It proposes indeed to discuss several possible reconfigurations within these assemblages. What would be necessary in order to include new materials that are currently excluded from the main circuits of material economy? Could other axiological backgrounds be represented within these circuits?<p>This research is based on the assumption that designers can effectively contribute to the gradual transformation of the circuits of material economy. They can probably help alternative materials to circulate in more standard circuits, and thus help to establish new practices that are more likely to respond to environmental and social issues. Of course, the designers do not have a monopoly on such changes. Other actors may, and even must, participate in such efforts. Yet, the main focus of this research is the designer. KM II : En analys av Malmö konstmuseums satellitverksamhet som extra-institutionell praktik

KM II. An analysis of Malmö Art Museum’s satellite space as extra-institutional practice maps the activities of the hitherto unexplored satellite exhibition space KM II, including the 14 exhibitions that were shown in KM II’s two spaces in Malmö’s harbor and in the suburb Rosengård. The essay contributes new perspectives on extra-institutional exhibition practices by analyzing KM II as an actor on the then much discussed art scene of Malmö, during the years 1992 to 1994. The essay also describes trans-local artistic connections over the Baltic Sea, pri- marily between Malmö and Hamburg. I describe the extra-institutional practice of KM II through the model “The Public as Alternative” (Det offentliga som alternativ). The practice created favorable conditions for extensive and often paid artistic work in an unconventional exhibition space, which also made KM II meet the strained situation on the local art scene, partly caused by the financial crisis of 1992. Last, the essay examines the complex relationship between the exhibitions, the institution, the place, and the audience, that made the extra-institutional status of KM II dissolve at Rosengård, during a time that can be described as a transitional phase in museum education.

Social engineering and the ISO/IEC 17799:2005 security standard: a study on effectiveness

As Information Security (IS) standards do not always effectively cater for Social Engineering (SE) attacks, the expected results of an Information Security Management System (ISMS), based on such standards, can be seriously undermined by uncontrolled SE vulnerabilities. ISO/IEC 17799:2005 is the subject of the current analysis as it is the type of standard not restricted to technical controls, while encompassing proposals from other standards and generally-accepted sets of recommendations in the field. Following an analysis of key characteristics of SE and based on the study of Psychological and Social aspects of SE and IS, a detailed examination of ISO/IEC 17799:2005 is presented and an assessment of the efficiency of its controls with respect to SE is provided. Furthermore, enhancements to existing controls and inclusion of new controls aimed at strengthening the defense against Social Engineering are suggested. Measurement and quantification issues of IS with respect to SE are also dealt with. The politics of post-industrial cultural knowledge work

This dissertation conducts in-depth inquiries into the practices, nature and theory of post-industrial cultural work and the humanities- and arts-based civic dialogues which cultural work promotes. Given the broad neglect of utopian thinking in the mainstream of critical social science and in an attempt to sketch out a vision of an alternative future, the aim of this thesis is to outline an “epistemology” for post-industrial cultural work as well as to reflect upon the outlook for educational cultural work practices and their function as a catalyst for civic dialogue and cultural change. The main concerns are the signification, interests and aims embodied in cultural production touching on issues of cultural and scientific learning, alternative modes of democratic governance of science and technology (Felt, Wynne et al. 2007), industrial society’s logic of accumulation and market rationality, the primacy of contemporary instrumental and capitalist values, neoliberalism, globalization and cosmopolitanism. With a view to addressing elementary questions regarding the future of cultural work, which are explored and theorised alongside future perspectives of a new form of knowledge work for the humanities and the arts, the actual challenges of cultural work are considered from within the wider context of the risk society (Beck 1986) and the threats which affect everybody today. In relying on Beck’s (2009) conceptualization of the world risk society as a “non-knowledge society” characterised by the global existence of incalculable risks/threats and non-knowing, the thesis addresses the problem of non-knowledge and unrecognised contingencies as a challenge for cultural work to design processes of (un)learning in civic dialogues. In exploring the social, cultural and political relevance of three empirical case studies, the thesis ventures into the prospects of a new socio-epistemological perspective for cultural work and workspaces for knowledge. The studies investigate three different (techno-)socio-cultural spaces of knowledge: a public exhibition about the new Gotthard Base Tunnel currently under construction in the Swiss Alps, Jennifer Baichwal’s film Manufactured Landscapes (2006) about the Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky and China’s industrial revolution, and the living intervention Fairytale at Documenta 12, 2007, which brought 1,001 Chinese citizens to Kassel, Germany. Actor-Network Theory (ANT) is employed as a tool for the analysis of the material-semiotic properties of differing knowledges, the heterogeneous relations of socio-economic networks, and the global and uncertain conditions of the post-industrial world in which cultural work is embedded. What is colloquially referred to as post-industrial cultural knowledge work in this thesis is elaborated in the context of a propositional socio-epistemological second-order framework (Von Foerster 1984; Pakman 2003) for cultural work and its entanglements with ethics, aesthetics, pragmatics, politics—and biopolitical production (Hardt and Negri 2000; 2009). In order to build “third spaces” of knowledge (Turnbull 2000) and to nurture uncertainty-oriented approaches and contingencies, the findings propose the development of more open, (self-)reflexive and anticipating forms of thinking and acting in cultural production fields with the aim to catalyse societal developments, to foster intrinsic values and to create cultural workplace identities with a moral-ecological-political awareness (cf. Banks 2006; 2007) invoking new interactions between viewers, audiences and the environment.

Pursuing sustainability : an exploratory study of organisations that have environmental missions

Numerous management scholars argue that management theory is anthropocentric and considers humans as being separate from the environment. Further anthropocentrism does not enable theory and organisations to contribute to sustainable development. To counter this it is argued theory and organisations should embrace an environmental paradigm that does not separate humans and the environment. This exploratory research attempts to identify whether any organisations operate with an environmental paradigm. The research questions focus on paradigms and some of the tensions surrounding the human-environment debate, such as; sufficiency versus profit maximisation and quoted status, money as a means or an end and notions of boundaries between the organisation and the environment. The questions are explored with individuals from 23 environmentally focused, primarily for profit, organisations. The results indicate that the organisations operate with an environmental paradigm, do not perceive of boundaries between the organisation and the environment, do not pursue profit maximisation, can demonstrate sufficiency, view money as a means rather than an end and do not have a favourable view of quoted status. Furthermore, the interviewees do not separate their world into two realms, one social and one natural. Narratives that arise include the organisations operating to a mode of mission and money and that an aphorism of “altruistically selfish and selfishly altruistic” (Maturana & Varela, 1998:197) can be applied. In short, the results indicate some challenges to conventional management theory, in particular strategy and competitive advantage, and that the organisations interviewed could help to, some extent, enable sustainable development. To close, the hope of this study it that its narratives and the conceptual tool it has prompted, provide succour to students and managers who want to develop a ‘future normal’ of theories and organisations that better enable sustainability.
