”You have been deafened" : En analys av skildringen av funktionalitet och dövhet i superhjälteserien Hawkeye

Gustafsson, Sofia January 2016 (has links)
This thesis looks at the contemporary superhero comic Hawkeye and its depiction of able-bodiedness and non-able-bodiedness, in general and more specifically the portrayal of deafness that takes place in the last story arc. Issues and depictions of various levels of functionality in comics, as a visual media, and superhero comics in particular, have been and are frequently present. They, however, rely heavily on old stereotypes, both in the visual and the textual elements. The small intersection of disability studies, crip theory and the study of superhero comics have mostly focused on the comics published between 1960 and 1980. The superhero genre is a genre known for idealized depictions of healthy and strong bodies, which is why it is such an interesting and complex theme to analyse. Matt Fraction and  David Aja’s Hawkeye comic utilizes the tools and elements inherent in the comic book style to portray disability and deafness in new enriching ways both in narrative terms and in the reader’s response to the text. Looking at both the visual and textual elements of the comic this thesis finds that the comic medium and the Hawkeye comic in particular manages to depict disability in an engaging and thought provoking way.

Where Do We Go From Here? Multiliteracy and the Future of Narrative

McCrory, Dustin W 06 August 2013 (has links)
Words on a page are insufficient vehicles for complex ideas. When images and words appear together on the page, as in comics, the process of meaning-making through narrative functions more efficiently. Building on this idea, we must establish a “graphic narratology” to understand the process whereby meaning is transmitted. Analysis of narratological conventions, as well as the conventions of mass-market comics, provides a framework for this new narratology.

The representation of space in the super-hero comics: the metropolis in Batman\'s adventures

Rama, Maria Angela Gomez 23 October 2006 (has links)
This paper provides a way to interpret geographic space trough the use of super-hero comics - mainly Batman - highlighting the importance of cultural icons and the comic book language in the modern world. We attempted to demonstrate that the landscape itself, as well as what this landscape represents, confirms or legitimizes the values and ideas of american/capitalist society which, directly or indirectly, generates them. The most important contribution of this paper lies in its application of the little used theme of super-hero comics in geographic studies. In addition, this study facilitates the establishment of an interdisciplinary bridge to the area of Communication studies

Do gibi ao livro: as traduções de Watchmen no Brasil / From comic to book: the Brazilian translations of Watchmen

Hanna, Katia Regina Vighy 10 May 2016 (has links)
This study aims to demonstrate how the consolidation stage of the graphic novel in the Brazilian comic system and the relation between the comic system and the literary system influenced the four Brazilian translations of Watchmen. The ideia defended is that comics have their own system, and that translation occupies the center of the system in Brazil, being responsible for introducing new models of graphic narratives. Watchmen was released in the USA from 1986 to 1987 as a 12-issue miniseries by DC Comics, and not long after was collected into a single book under the label of graphic novel. In Brazil, Watchmen has followed a similar publishing path and the translations reflect the transformations of the national comic book market in the last three decades towards establishing a market for adults and more demanding readers, and to migrate sales from news agencies to bookstores, in a similar way to what happened in the US comic market from the 1980s. This study also demonstrates the peculiar autonomy held by the translator regarding to translations strategies in three of the Brazilian editions. The corpus of this study is composed of 6-issues miniseries published by Editora Abril (1988-1989), 12-issues also released by Editora Abril (1999), the 4 books by Via Lettera publishing house (2005-2006) and the Absolute Edition (2011) by Panini Books.

Propaganda ideológica em mídia impressa: uma busca pela verdade acerca da possível influência do mangá japonês sobre a juventude brasileira / Propaganda in Pr int Media: a search for the truth about the possible influence of japanese manga on Brazilian youth

Cavalheiro, Renato de Faria 18 September 2009 (has links)
The manga magazines from Japan, published and popularized in Brazil, are a mass communication media that express in its pages a system of values and a way of life that are considered by scholars of Japanese culture as typical and ideals within their social and cultural framework, and are attracting an increasing number of readers and admirers, uniting people from the most diverse cultural backgrounds that Brazil offers. As a mass communication media, the manga magazines are also tools of propaganda capable of an influence that ranges from the processes of formation of the individuals identities, passes through the configuration of their values systems, affects their perceptions and understanding about the reality of the world in which they live, and comes up to influence the establishment of the ways of life that these individuals have as reals and ideals. Considering this, the present research, at first, gives some answers about the reading of these magazines, showing if they actually exerts some influence on its readers, for after this, check the result of that influence. To this end, this study made use of a quantitative empirical survey that used elements of the Spiral Dynamics Theory and of the Emergent Cyclical Levels of Existence Theory for compare non- readers and reader s of these magazines by the value systems and ideals ways of life that these groups have. The results showed that, as expected, these two groups are different, and that these differences, although they are presented in a manner divergent on what was expected, occurs as a result of the reading of manga magazines.

Mangá e a transmissão de cultura: o exemplo de Rurouni Kenshin / Mangá and the transmission of culture: the Rurouni Kenshin exemple

Furuyama, Gustavo 23 September 2008 (has links)
This work´s subject is the Mangá (Japanese cartoon) and its use as a cultural transmission tool. Starting from the historical analysis and the subsequent world expansion, this work tried to understand how the mangá was created and how it is understood by the Japanese and the ocidental people, specifically Brazilians. One relevant point was that Japanese people see the mangá just as cartoons while ocidental people understand it as a style. The title chosen to be the studied is Rurouni Kenshin, a very famous mangá in Brazil as well as in Japan. This mangá tells the story of a wandering samurai in the beginning of the Meiji era, who, regretted of being an assassin, started to protect everyone´s life. We tried to identify elements in the story that were related to the reality and could be used as a source of knowledge transmission. Many aspects were used in this comparison, such as architectural, historical, linguistic, among others. In the end of the analysis it was possible to prove that there is a connection between the cartoon and the real facts. Therefore, mangá can be understood just like fun, but if the reader could understand its content in depth, it can be used as a knowledge transmission tool.
