To carry out this purpose, the research is organized into three chapters. In the first, entitled "Contemporary Tendencies in Portuguese Literature", we present a brief overview of contemporary Portuguese romance and its main tendencies, as well as the literary journey undertaken by Saramago. Considerations of Miguel Real and Alvaro Cardoso Gomes in the reconstruction of this Portuguese literary scene, and interviews and critical comments about his own work, made by Saramago, were essential in this chapter. In "Discourses on the threshold: between (re)affirmation and the (re)formulation," the second chapter of the study, we discuss the concept of metafiction proposed by Linda Hutcheon and commented by Gustavo Bernardo and present the metafictional strategies employed by the author in the construction of the studied novel and the effects of meaning generated by such employment. The intertextuality the resumption of popular sayings, the Bible discourse or the dialog with other unrelated texts the intratextuality and metalanguage were evidenced here. In the last chapter, "Dialogues between Saramago and Platonic caves", it s investigated the intertextual dialogue established between the novel of Saramago and the myth of Plato's cave, suggested from the very title of the work. The objective was to thus display as through the resumption of foreign texts, the Portuguese author moves between the (des)construction and (re)construction of the speeches, creating a threshold text and requiring the reader his effective participation in the creation of new meanings.

The discourse is ordered in order to consider what was in Memorial do Convento as a means to record the speech itself or the ideological expression of the ruling power, in view of the periodicity of historical fact and measured the impact that such actions resonated with the Portuguese Crown. The establishment of the narrow limits of historical appearance, whose statement reflects more than a simple plot, overcomes the essence of the analysis, assuming a comprehensive study under the conditions of construction of historical discourse, be it on the triad of power in historiography, or the margin metafictional utterances in this constitution. So are characterizations of "beings" discourse tied the dynamics of a historical era, an exhibition of the history; beyond that differentiate these subtle concepts for fiction / reality. Mankind is not exempt from its historical constitution because their brands are indelibly recorded in the literary, as this is in itself a representation of customs, ideas and thoughts, also, the philosophical expression of an era. The theoretical discourse and the weights will give under the foundations of Mikhail Bakthin (2010), Terry Eagleton (2001), Jean-Maurice Lefebve (1980), André Trouche (2006), Maurice Halbwachs (2006), Peter Burke (1992), and Linda Hutcheon (1991). Thus, history is written, narrated, and recreated based on fact. This way, you can have the conviction that past data that have come to us because they are not the facts themselves but representations of events that occurred from the perspective of the statement of a "being" discursive. A discursividade e as ponderações teóricas dar-se-ão sob as bases de Mikhail Bakhtin (2010), Terry Eagleton (2001), Maurice-Jean Lefebve (1980), André Trouche (2006), Maurice Halbwachs (2006), Peter Burke (1992), e Linda Hutcheon (1991).

Ondas nas Praias de um Mundo Sombrio: New Wave e Cyberpunk no Brasil / Waves on the beaches of a dark world: New Wave and Cyberpunk in Brazil

Causo, Roberto de Sousa 01 November 2013 (has links)
The objective of this study is to provide an analysis of the two main literary movements in English-written science fiction associated to postmodernism, the New Wave of the 1960s and the Cyberpunk Movement of the 1980s, establishing comparisons with science fictional production of the same periods in the First and Second Waves of Brazilian science fiction. Issues of literary politics will be constantly considered, as a way to relativize the theoretical charge of the arguments, trying to establish that intentions, proceedings, and literary programs exist inserted in personal, social, and even national contexts. This approach is supported by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieus concept of Field of Power, and also by a number of readers of his ideas. Taking from the works of critics and theoreticians such as Clive Bloom, Scott McCracken, Ken Gelder, Michel de Certeau, and Robert Scholes, this work claims that science fiction as a literary genre of popular roots can play out the role of a literature that performs a criticism of modernity without relying on those formal aspects associated with postmodernist literature, including fragmentary prose and the mixing of genres and literary codes. The research leads to a reflection concerning the situation of genre fiction vis-à-vis postmodernist fictions propensity for metafiction and experimentalism.

"A blur of potentialities" : the figure of the trickster in the works of Elizabeth Bowen, Elizabeth Taylor, Iris Murdoch and Muriel Spark

Wilkinson, Lorna Christine Rose January 2017 (has links)
This thesis explores the figure of the trickster in the works of Elizabeth Bowen, Elizabeth Taylor, Iris Murdoch and Muriel Spark. By looking at these writers’ treatment of elusive, illusive and allusive characters, the thesis argues that they each incorporated what can be read as “trickster” figures in their fiction as a means of addressing anxieties about art, society and the self. The trickster is a character-type found in narratives from a multitude of cultures and eras, and is typically characterised by his subversive presence, his boundary-crossing and his role as a healer of predicament. While the trickster is often perceived as a universal phenomenon arising from a collective unconscious, this thesis instead focusses on writers’ intentional inclusion of trickster characters in literature as a way of thinking through specific problems. Bowen, it will be shown, interpolated tricksy characters drawn from myth and fairy-tale into her fiction in order to expose a perceived rift between art and academia; Taylor used the trickster to think about the construction of identity in post-war Britain; Murdoch took models from Shakespeare to create tricksters that helped her explore the ethics of writing fiction; and Spark’s tricksters allowed her to conceptualise truth and lies, and good and evil. Concentrating on four mid-century writers whose works have been seen to vary in genre and style, this thesis demonstrates that a trickster paradigm emerged in mid-twentieth-century British fiction – a period not previously associated with the trickster. Influenced by converging strands of trickery and allusion in art through the early decades of the twentieth century, notable mid-century British writers used outsider characters to probe social and artistic shifts in a landscape fractured by war and to reach for a sense of healing. By identifying such characters as trickster figures, this thesis sheds new light on patterns of subversion, healing and character in mid-century fiction. It explores the particular affinity the trickster had with women’s writing, and illustrates how the trickster was important to twentieth-century concerns surrounding metafiction and the role of the reader.

Therefore, this thesis has as its object of study the book Leopardos de Kafka, by Moacyr Scliar, which is part of the collection of detective novels Literature and Death, released by the publisher Companhia das Letras. This study aims to show the narrative resources and how they were used in the novel aforementioned, so that we can show that they break the existing boundaries between Classical Literature and Best Sellers and the standards of the traditional detective novel. For this objective to be achieved, the theoretical foundation of this thesis was based, mainly, on studies of the detective novel, done by Boileau and Narcejac (1991), Albuquerque (1979), Reimão (1983, 2005) and others; in researches on Best Sellers, done by Sodré (1978), Caldas (2000) among others and on studies of Historiographic Metafiction, postmodernism and narcissistic narrative, made by Hutcheon (1984, 2002).

No. of bitstreams: 1 Disserta??o completa.pdf: 952706 bytes, checksum: dbfb5dc1aeed460dc95bc5485e87bf85 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-08-01 / Funda??o de Amparo ? Pesquisa do Estado da Bahia - FAPEB / This document aims at comprehending the formation process of the national awareness as well as the Brazilian identity in Ana Miranda?s works, focusing on the novel Desmundo (1996). To do so, it is taken into account the relevance of the important post-modern concept of ?presenting of the past? in the literary and contemporary texts and the way this concept introduces issues related to the process of construction of the national identity in the novels of historiographic metafiction. Therefore, based upon a descriptive and analytical bibliographical methodology, it is presented theoretical and methodological discussions raised by scholars of post-modernity, formation of awareness and national identity such as: Hutcheon (1991), Baudrillard (1991; 2001), Jameson (2002; 2006), White (2001), Renan (1997), Anderson (2008), Santos (1997), Guibernau (1997), Bhabha (1997; 1998), Hall (2003), Bauman (2005), and so forth. In the analysis of Miranda?s works it is discussed the formation of the Brazilian nation and the national awareness since its genesis ? the colonial period - , which is, broadly speaking, based on transgression, prejudice and discrimination, in a taken-as ?rigorous? classes structure and power abuse. Furthermore, it is examined the parody presence of the foundational myth, as well as the origin of the nation and the Brazilian identity, emphasizing the importance of the individual acknowledgement. To sum up, it can be noticed that the protagonist of the novel can be taken as a standard of representation of this process of identity acknowledgement. Such process is, at the same time, a plural, multifaceted and decentralized one.

Lentina, Alda 03 December 2012 (has links)
When Agustina Bessa-Luís rewrites History she is guided by the will to show the absence of women in History. Our reading will show the reintroduction of women in Portuguese History through the “descontruction” of its discourse. It’s through questioning the historic objectivity, by the variety of points of view and by an intertextual work with written sources, which reveal that they are human constructions, that the novels become postmodern historiographics metafictions. They elaborate through parody and ambivalence en carnival History, giving a different picture of Portugal. Then the novelist contrasts the official History with a Herstory in order to document the feminine experience and identity in all their multiplicities. The question of memory and phases that are inseparable from woman conditions, reveals a process of identical construction, which gives a report of two ways of feminine inscription into History, one authorize, the other transgressive. Then the principle of masculine domination is questioned through the matter of virility as an impossible model to attain. The men become ambiguous figures, who represent the disorder and decay of society. Fleing but reconciled they reform the masculinity and sign the death of patriarchate. Finally, the last foundations that govern the relation the relation between men and women, and the question of obligatory heterosexuality and the couple, are examined. The writer shows the end of radical otherness between the Other and the One which provokes a resemblance between sexes and questions the notion of the couple. Thus, if the author has shown in her novels, that we can be a man and a woman in different ways, she also shows that in a couple the union is impossible.

The Forgiveness Project

Gentry, Karen Lee 14 April 2010 (has links)
The Forgiveness Project includes a critical introduction that defines the author’s approach to the short-short form as well as an explanation of how historiographical metafiction can work to memorialize. The first section contains primarily short-short stories that address the themes of motherhood, small tyrannies, happy liars, caregiving and the clichés of grief. A collection of linked short stories follows, revolving around elusive forgiveness. On the night of July 17, 1977, Juanita Lee, a bridge tender in South Florida, was abducted by two men and executed in the Everglades to silence her opposition to the demolition of an Intracoastal Waterway bridge. Twenty-two years later her daughter, Jill, now a Washington D.C. lobbyist who views the world through the cynical lens of her life’s work, is confronted with a plea for forgiveness via an organization called “The Forgiveness Project,” representing one of her mother’s killers.

Thevenon, Marie 23 November 2012 (has links) (PDF)
