The growth of mobile phone and therefore the number of base station, which establish communication with mobile devices, has extended the applicability of services under this wireless technology. Although it has benefits for the current lifestyle, mobile phone has generated concerns about possible adverse health effects of exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation populations. The set of three articles are included in this thesis with the overall objective to investigate the association between exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation arising from base station of the mobile phone and health symptoms. In cross-sectional study, 440 questionnaires were applied by means of interviews in two neighborhoods in Salvador/BA. Initially examined whether exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation/mobile phone on ways to use the cell phone handset and the perception of the population in exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation. Considering physical phenomena of absorption, reflection and diffraction, which affect the propagation of electromagnetic characteristics and functioning of the cell phone waves, especially as this is the strongest source of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, how to use by the population, the lack of base station Monte Serrat, considering also research showing an association between cell phone non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation and health effects and the findings of this research, it is appropriate to analyze the association between health effects and exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation mobile phone. These effects would be more linked to cell phone use in relation to base station. In this sense, it is understood that the reasons should be of more concern of the population are related to the duration of the calls, the use of the set of weak signal coverage and the proximity of the device to the skull, among other inappropriate usage modes. In the case of exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation/base station, in view of the low values of the electric field and that individuals are in the far field, the effects would be for residents to 300 m from its surroundings. In the analysis of the perception of the respondents, it was found more reference to risks than benefits. It was found that age influences the perception of risk associated with non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation /mobile phone. We evaluated the association between complaints and neurological and psychiatric diagnoses and exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation mobile phone, using a hierarchical logistic regression analysis. We observed an association between neuropsychiatric effects and reside near the base station and forms of cell phone use (≤30min / day, with weak signal coverage near the body, two or more chips and never turn off the phone to sleep). It was concluded that exposure to non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation mobile phone and other electronics was independently associated with neuropsychiatric symptoms of gender, education and smoking. In this sense, it is recommended the adoption of precautionary measures aiming to reduce such exposure: the installation of base stations of mobile phone away at least a distance of 300 m from residences. The cell phone user must use earphone or headphone pop, as well as to avoid using the device with weak signal coverage; should still leave the cell phone away from the body and keep it off while sleeping. These results may guide the authorities towards the achievement of prevention/ precaution and information for decision making regarding the management and risk communication for the promotion of health of individuals when exposed to such radiation.

Mobile phones' contributions to socio-economic development according to Sen : corn growers' perceived impact in the Congo

Cibangu, Sylvain January 2016 (has links)
Research questions: This research was focused on exploring the impact of communication technologies on rural populations in the Congo. In particular, this research posed two questions: 1. Do mobile phones produce development in rural areas of the Congo? 2. Do mobile phones improve the living conditions of people? The questions helped examine ways in which mobile phones were or were not engendering development among these populations. Methods: The research was undertaken using four methods: 1. Phenomenology, 2. Sen's capability approach, 3. Participatory method, and 4. Ecological method. Phenomenology aimed to cater to the experiences and meanings of mobile phone uses. Sen's capability approach allowed the interviews to be focused on the basic needs of the poor. Participatory method provided a greater participation of respondents in discussion groups, and ecological method helped achieve a higher inclusion of key players in the targeted area. Major findings: The major findings of this study included: 1. Much of the literature on mobile phones and development was not representative or inclusive of key players and their day-to-day lives. 2. Studies have tended to present snapshots or single-focused accounts of mobile phone and development. 3. Authors of mobile phone research have tended to see rural populations with an urban-led bias, leaving aside the actual characteristics of rural areas. 4. Mobile phones were not limited to a person and her properties, but rather mobile phones were owned and shared by the community. 5. Participants expressed a need for technical skills and means to be available to the community and their members. 6. Households were not separated, but rather they were connected to allow people take care of one another. 7. People were connected through collective solidarities in order to come to the aid of those with special needs. 8. Literature and mobile phone sponsors or companies were disseminating mobile phones with an extractive and commercial tendency, focused principally on fees of batteries, chargers, and prepaid cards. Major contributions: The major contributions of this research revolved around the focus on: 1. technology to enhance the needed technical skills among concerned populations. 2. shared ownership of mobile phones to cater to both users and non-users of mobile phones among concerned populations. 3. connected households to capitalize on the dynamics of family among concerned populations. 4. collective solidarities to accommodate the processes of aiding one another among concerned populations. 5. capabilities, from a commercial or extractive aspect to capabilities to enhance the capabilities of people to afford mobile phones fees. 6. capabilities, from a corporate or business aspect to capabilities to enhance the capabilities of people who did not and could not own a business. 7. human basic needs to enhance the capabilities of mobile phone users with regard to human basic needs. 8. outliers or the marginalized to attend to those left out among concerned populations. 9. mobile phone-centric libraries to enhance the storage and retrieval of needed information among concerned populations.

INSTANTES COTIDIANOS: POR UMA ARTE DA FOTOGRAFIA MÓVEL / DAILY INSTANTS: FOR A MOBILE PHOTOGRAPHY ART

Swarowsky, Luciana Abitante 21 March 2013 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The objective of this research, in visual poetic, is to investigate in a practicaltheoretical way, the photography production from the usage of a new media: the mobile phone. This research aims to question the mobile photography while photographic object, as question the ephemerid of photographic act through a mobile device. In the subjugate of the pre-established technical limitation, which is a mobile device characteristic, I am developing a poetic which works the photographic capture and post-capture in transit, the mobility. This is a poetic motivated by a growing potential that is reaching the mobile communication and that tries to include new media in daily basis. Therefore, we are being guided by electronic impulses and dialogs mediated by the machine. Through three-distinct operational process, from innumerous possible, I work the mobile photography searching ways to transform it in an expressive way of art. In the position of a armed subject and completely apparatus , with a camera always in hand, I tried to express an experience derived not only from my subjectivity while author and real subject, but also as a experience that elucidates the device chosen automatisms and, therefore, and automatized subject revealed, non-personalized. In this way, all the photographic production process, capture and post-capture, get instituted by an interactive dialog between subjectivity and automaticity.

A literature review leaded to an investigation about the tensions and meetings produced by the presence of media in schools, with emphasis on educational issues of authority and digital inclusion, and teacher training. Using questionnaires, it was found that the cell is accessible to almost all the students and teachers of the RME of Florianópolis at the three schools surveyed. Both groups are aware that the cell is restrained by law, but it does not prevent its presence and use in schools. The teachers and students are favorable to the pedagogical use of cell phone, and to its photo and video capabilities. A larger debate about the use of these tools in schools is essential, because the formal prohibition does not preclude the use of the cell phone, perceived as a tool of transgression by students, and therefore its educational potential stays unseen for the teachers / Nesta pesquisa buscou-se investigar a presença do celular e suas recorrências de uso pedagógico em escolas da Rede Municipal de Ensino de Florianópolis, coletando e analisando-se dados sobre o acesso e a familiaridade discente e docente com as mídias digitais no ambiente escolar da RME, bem como sobre o estatuto do celular e do uso de seus dispositivos de fotografia e vídeo.

Mobiltelefonen som hjälpmedel för vuxna med ADHD / The Mobile Phone as Assistive Technology for Adults with ADHD

Hallberg, Pernilla January 2009 (has links)

Mobile Communication Technologies and Their Effects on Elderly, A Case Study of Diabetes type 2 Elderly

Raza, Syed Tosif, Naveed, Sundas January 2010 (has links)
Ageing population’s increasing ratio is alarming and the needs of elder persons are increasing day by day. Fast increase in ageing population means the growing of chronic diseases as well. Diabetes type 2 is a chronic disease which commonly found in elder persons. Technological innovations in Health care sector playing an enormous role in improving the healthy life of all humans. Use of latest technologies in perceiving the health services are now common. Each technology in this era is facilitating in many ways, same is the case with mobile phone which can provide multiple functionalities for the betterment of elderly life. The focus of this study is to investigate the reasons of less use of mobile phone in elderly life and what other functionalities elderly want in coming mobile phones. The results of this study would be supportive in understanding the problems of diabetes type 2 patients in using mobile phone. This study would also be helpful for the manufacturers in developing the mobile phones according to the needs of elder persons. The analysis of this research work depends on three study stages. It starts from the literature review, in which we learned the effects of diabetes on elder persons. It also includes the usability features of mobile phone which necessary for implementing the future functionalities with elderly perspective. On the basis of literature review we designed the questionnaire and prepare the interviews. Interviews were conducted with two health care professionals and questionnaires with the citizens of county of Blekinge. We believe that our analysis will be helpful for both elderly and mobile phone manufacturing companies and they will also be supportive in increasing the quality of life of elderly.

Think big : for small - infusing confidence, security and trustworthiness for mobile services / Tänk stort för litet : ingjuta förtroende, säkerhet och trovärdighet för mobiltjänster

Antonsson, Roger, Petterson, Lena January 2004 (has links)
The use of mobile telephony has over the past years increased and consequently has the development of services over the mobile phone also increased. This semester we have taken part in a large system development project, our contributions have been designing the graphical user interfaces. In doing that we found the problem with how to mediate trust to a user through a graphical user interface interesting. In this thesis we are focusing on how to develop graphical user interfaces for a mobile phone service that radiate and infuse confidence, security and trustworthiness. In order to attain the purpose, we have used the combination of literature studies and to some extent user involvement with Mock-ups and a Think-aloud technique. We are also describing the importance of taking as well usability and usability goals as the needs for the end users into consideration. We have found that more research on how to radiate and infuse trust through a graphical user interface is needed. This thesis is concluded with some aspects on that subject that we think is important to have in mind. It is of great importance to never leave the user in a state of uncertainty and therefore is clear, sincere and informative feedback necessary throughout the service. Also central in designing graphical user interfaces is to make sure that there is no mismatch in the security of the system and the radiated security.

Inexpensive mobile technologies to empower rural farmers with m-agriculture

Iraba, Marie Louise January 2010 (has links)
Magister Scientiae - MSc / Market information and established communication between seller and buyer play an important role in business activities. This thesis investigates the Transkei area in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa to find out how to empower rural farmers by providing them with less-expensive mobile technology enabling them to post and advertise their produce, access market information on a common database, and find and communicate with potential customers. The farmers’ requirements were identified using quantitative and qualitative methods and a prototype consisting of USSD and web applications was developed. It allows the farmer to follow a sequence of menu commands to send a request to the database and access market information, such as commodity prices, and post information about their own produce so as to attract more customers. The low cost of USSD and the ubiquity of mobile phones enable the system to be usable, affordable and effective. During the final stage of development, the system was tested successfully and addressed a major problem faced by farmers, i.e. lack of access to market information. / South Africa

The evolution of the relation between the users and the news via computers and mobile phones in Turkey : traditional mass media vis-à-vis social media

Bilgici, Ceren 04 June 2015 (has links)
In this thesis, the experiences of the users with regard to the development of new technologies (of telecommunication, internet and mobile phones) in Turkey on the internet are analyzed. The objective is to demonstrate the effects of the new technologies on the practices of the internet users reaching the news via computer and mobile phone. The purpose is to observe the transformation of the daily practices on the internet due to the evolution of the broadcast, the development of the telecommunication market, the development of the adapted interface to the Website ergonomics and the invention of the new technological devices (such as smartphones). The presentation of this process consists of three different parts. The first part is about the historical evolution of internet as a new news media, the usage of new information and communication technologies and the adaptation of the society. The second part analyzes the properties of the news sites. It concerns the new ways of searching news via mobile phones. The third and last part is about the analysis of the relation between turkish users and new information and communication technologies and the transformation of the habits of searching news.According to our studies, the digitalization of the news, evolution of smart phones and the development of social media affects the mode and manners of reading. Nowadays, the practices of online news consumption is more multiple. The ergonomics of interface of websites and applications has a significant role on their media preferences.

Émergence et évolution de l’industrie des services numériques pour téléphones mobiles / Emergence and evolution of an industry : the case of mobile data services

Querbes-Revier, Adrien 04 January 2012 (has links)
The telecommunications industry currently undergoes a dramatic evolution. Faced with thedevelopment of new uses on mobile phones, incumbents of the mobile phone industry (networkoperators and devices manufacturers) must adapt to a new technological and competitive environment. This new environment technologically relies on expansions of uses of digital objects (software andcontents that can be either of professional, personal or leisure use) and thereby serves as a launchingpad for actors more or less mature coming from software industries, copyright-based industries or theInternet industry. Based on this observation, our thesis rests on the idea that incumbents of the mobilephone industry must adapt to this new environment in order to maintain their position, and must learnto coordinate with those new actors as coordination is required for this market to emerge. We thereforestart with a historical analysis of the emergence of the mobile services industry so as to position theissues at stake regarding coordination. We then focus on “open source” projects for smartphoneoperating systems in order to analyse the interest of an open strategy. Last, we design an evolutionistsimulation model so that to analyse the actors’ strategies linked with the structure of the industry andits effects on the technological structure.
