Previous issue date: 2006-10-09 / The northern coast of Rio Grande do Norte State (RN) shows areas of Potiguar basin with high activity in petroleum industry. With the goal of avoiding and reducing the accident risks with oil it is necessary to understand the natural vulnerability, mapping natural resources and monitoring the oil spill. The use of computational tools for environmental monitoring makes possible better analyses and decisions in political management of environmental preservation. This work shows a methodology for monitoring of environment impacts, with purpose of avoiding and preserving the sensible areas in oil contact. That methodology consists in developing and embedding an integrated computational system. Such system is composed by a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS). The SDSS shows a computational infrastructure composed by Web System of Geo-Environmental and Geographic Information - SWIGG , the System of Environmental Sensibility Maps for Oil Spill AutoMSA , and the Basic System of Environmental Hydrodynamic ( SisBAHIA a System of Modeling and Numerical Simulating SMNS). In a scenario of oil spill occurred coastwise of Rio Grande do Norte State s northern coast, the integration of such systems will give support to decision agents for managing of environmental impacts. Such support is supplied through a system of supporting to spatial decisions / O litoral norte do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte (RN) apresenta ?reas da bacia Potiguar com intensa atividade da ind?stria petrol?fera. Com a finalidade de prevenir e minimizar os riscos de acidentes com ?leo, faz-se necess?rio compreender a vulnerabilidade natural, mapear os recursos naturais e monitorar os derrames de ?leo. Photo-induced Toxicity of Deepwater Horizon Spill Oil to Four Native Gulf of Mexico SpeciesAlloy, Matthew Michael 12 1900 (has links)
The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill resulted in the accidental release of millions of barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Photo-induced toxicity following co-exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one mechanism by which polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from oil spills may exert toxicity. Blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) are an important commercial and ecological resource in the Gulf of Mexico and their largely transparent larvae may make them sensitive to PAH photo-induced toxicity. Mahi-mahi (Coryphaena hippurus), an important fishery resource, have positively buoyant, transparent eggs. These characteristics may result in mahi-mahi embryos being at particular risk from photo-induced toxicity. Red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) and speckled seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) are both important fishery resources in the GoM. They spawn near-shore and produce positively buoyant embryos that hatch into larvae in about 24 h. The goal of this body of work was to determine whether exposure to UV as natural sunlight enhances the toxicity of crude oil to early lifestage GoM species. Larval and embryonic organisms were exposed to several dilutions of water accommodated fractions (WAF) from several different oils collected in the field under chain of custody during the 2010 spill and two to three gradations of natural sunlight in a factorial design. Here, we report that co-exposure to natural sunlight and oil significantly reduced larval survival and embryo hatch compared to exposure to oil alone.

Les radars à synthèse d’ouverture (RSO) polarimétriques sont devenus incontournables dans le domaine de la télédétection, grâce à leur zone de couverture étendue, ainsi que leur capacité à acquérir des données dans n’importe quelles conditions atmosphériques de jour comme de nuit. Au cours des trois dernières décennies, plusieurs RSO polarimétriques ont été utilisés portant une variété de modes d’imagerie, tels que la polarisation unique, la polarisation double et également des modes dits pleinement polarimétriques. Grâce aux recherches récentes, d’autres modes alternatifs, tels que la polarisation hybride et compacte, ont été proposés pour les futures missions RSOs. Toutefois, un débat anime la communauté de la télédétection quant à l’utilité des modes alternatifs et quant au compromis entre la polarimétrie double et la polarimétrie totale. Cette thèse contribue à ce débat en analysant et comparant ces différents modes d’imagerie RSO dans une variété d’applications, avec un accent particulier sur la surveillance maritime (la détection des navires et de marées noires). Pour nos comparaisons, nous considérons un paramètre fondamental, appelé le degré de polarisation (DoP). Ce paramètre scalaire a été reconnu comme l’un des paramètres les plus pertinents pour caractériser les ondes électromagnétiques partiellement polarisées. A l’aide d’une analyse statistique détaillée sur les images polarimétriques RSO, nous proposons des estimateurs efficaces du DoP pour les systèmes d’imagerie cohérente et incohérente. Ainsi, nous étendons la notion de DoP aux différents modes d’imagerie polarimétrique hybride et compacte. Cette étude comparative réalisée dans différents contextes d’application dégage des propriétés permettant de guider le choix parmi les différents modes polarimétriques. Les expériences sont effectuées sur les données polarimétriques provenant du satellite Canadian RADARSAT-2 et le RSO aéroporté Américain AirSAR, couvrant divers types de terrains tels que l’urbain, la végétation et l’océan. Par ailleurs nous réalisons une étude détaillée sur les potentiels du DoP pour la détection et la reconnaissance des marées noires basée sur les acquisitions récentes d’UAVSAR, couvrant la catastrophe de Deepwater Horizon dans le golfe du Mexique. / Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems have become highly fruitful thanks to their wide area coverage and day and night all-weather capabilities. Several polarimetric SARs have been flown over the last few decades with a variety of polarimetric SAR imaging modes; traditional ones are linear singleand dual-pol modes. More sophisticated ones are full-pol modes. Other alternative modes, such as hybrid and compact dual-pol, have also been recently proposed for future SAR missions. The discussion is vivid across the remote sensing society about both the utility of such alternative modes, and also the trade-off between dual and full polarimetry. This thesis contributes to that discussion by analyzing and comparing different polarimetric SAR modes in a variety of geoscience applications, with a particular focus on maritime monitoring and surveillance. For our comparisons, we make use of a fundamental, physically related discriminator called the Degree of Polarization (DoP). This scalar parameter has been recognized as one of the most important parameters characterizing a partially polarized electromagnetic wave. Based on a detailed statistical analysis of polarimetric SAR images, we propose efficient estimators of the DoP for both coherent and in-coherent SAR systems. We extend the DoP concept to different hybrid and compact SAR modes and compare the achieved performance with different full-pol methods. We perform a detailed study of vessel detection and oil-spill recognition, based on linear and hybrid/compact dual-pol DoP, using recent data from the Deepwater Horizon oil-spill, acquired by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)/Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR). Extensive experiments are also performed over various terrain types, such as urban, vegetation, and ocean, using the data acquired by the Canadian RADARSAT-2 and the NASA/JPL Airborne SAR (AirSAR) system.

The 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico awakened communities to the increased risk of large-scale damage along their coastlines presented by new technology in deep water drilling. Normal accident theory and high reliability theory offer a framework through which to view the 2010 spill that features predictive criteria linked to a qualitative assessment of risk presented by technology and organizations. The 2010 spill took place in a sociotechnical system that can be described as complex and tightly coupled, and therefore prone to normal accidents. However, the entities in charge of managing this technology lacked the organizational capacity to safely operate within this sociotechnical system.

Abstract
Nanocellulose is a renewable, biodegradable, and easily available material that is considered as an attractive resource for many different value-added applications in the emerging bio-based economy. Its outstanding properties, such as strength, lightness, transparency, and good thermal insulation, have inspired research and product development around nanocellulose. The potential of nanocellulose to replace synthetic chemicals made from non-renewable sources, for example, is considered to be very promising. Chemical functionalization, that is, the modification of the cellulosic surface properties, is seen to be beneficial in applications such as those in which higher hydrophobicity is needed.
In this thesis, the ability of cellulose nanoparticles to stabilize oil droplets in oil-in-water emulsions was studied. The aim of the study was to explore the possibility of developing a new type of "green" oil spill chemical from cellulose. Therefore, the cellulose was chemically modified in an aquatic environment with a sequential periodate oxidation and chlorite oxidation followed by reductive amination reaction, which increased the hydrophobicity of the produced nanocellulose. In addition, the use of deep-eutectic solvents in the preparation of modified (succinylated and carboxylated) and non-modified cellulose nanoparticles was studied. Chemical (kraft) pulp, dissolving pulp, and semi-chemical fine fibers were used as raw materials in this research.
The results demonstrated that chemically modified cellulose nanoparticles work well as stabilizers for oil-water emulsions resulting in small, stable oil droplets and impeding creaming, which is a typical phenomenon for particle stabilized emulsions. The modification of cellulose nanoparticles improved their ability to partition at the oil-water interface, which enabled efficient and irreversible adsorption. It was found that because of their small size, the cellulose nanocrystals can be compressed more tightly onto the surface of the oil droplet, while longer and more flexible cellulose nanofibrils formed a web structure between the oil droplets. All cellulose nanoparticle-stabilized emulsions were stable against droplet coalescence, and even at low temperatures, they retained their droplet size and stability. Salinity, on the other hand, improved stability when CNCs from chemical pulp were used, but it negatively affected stability when nanocrystals from semichemical pulp were used. / Tiivistelmä
Uusiutuva, biohajoava ja helposti saatavilla oleva nanoselluloosa on merkittävä tulevaisuuden raaka-aine useissa erilaisissa käyttökohteissa. Sen ylivertaiset ominaisuudet, kuten lujuus, keveys, läpinäkyvyys ja lämmöneristävyys ovat olleet innoittamassa nanoselluloosan tutkimusta ja tuotekehitystä. Nanoselluloosan mahdollisuuksia ja käyttöä eri sovelluksissa korvaamaan esimerkiksi uusiutumattomista luonnonvaroista valmistettuja kemikaaleja, pidetään erittäin lupaavina. Kemiallisesta funktionalisoinnista eli selluloosan pintaominaisuuksien muokkauksesta nähdään olevan hyötyä, kun tavoitellaan nanoselluloosan toiminnallisuutta esimerkiksi hydrofobista luonnetta vaativissa sovelluksissa pinta-aktiivisen aineen tavoin.
Tässä työssä tutkittiin erityisesti nanoselluloosapartikkeleiden kykyä stabiloida öljypisaroita dieselöljy-vesiemulsioissa. Tutkimuksen päämääränä oli selvittää mahdollisuutta kehittää uudentyyppistä, ”vihreää” öljyntorjuntakemikaalia selluloosasta. Tämän vuoksi selluloosaa muokattiin kemiallisesti vesiympäristössä yhdistetyllä hapetus- ja aminointikäsittelyllä, mikä lisäsi valmistetun nanoselluloosan hydrofobisuutta. Toisena käsittelyvaihtoehtona tutkittiin syväeutektisten liuottimien käyttöä sekä muokattujen (sukkinyloidut ja karboksyloidut) että muokkaamattomien nanoselluloosapartikkeleiden valmistuksessa. Raaka-aineina työssä käytettiin kemiallista sellumassaa, liukosellua sekä puolikemiallista hienokuitua.
Työn tuloksena voidaan todeta, että nanoselluloosasta valmistetut kemiallisesti muokatut (funktionalisoidut) nanopartikkelit toimivat hyvin öljy-vesiemulsiossa estäen emulsion öljypisaroiden yhteensulautumista. Nanopartikkelit stabiloivat emulsiossa olevan öljyn hyvin pieniksi pisaroiksi hidastaen kermottumista eli emulsion yleistä faasierottumista. Nanoselluloosan funktionalisointi paransi sen kykyä hakeutua öljy-vesi rajapintaan, mahdollistaen tehokkaan ja palautumattoman adsorption. Havaittiin, että pienen kokonsa vuoksi selluloosananokiteet pystyivät pakkautumaan tiiviimmin öljyn pinnalle, kun taas selluloosananokuidut, jotka ovat pidempiä, muodostivat verkkomaisen rakenteen myös öljypisaroiden väliin. Suolan lisäys vaikutti emulsion stabiilisuuteen vaihtelevasti eri näytteiden välillä, kun taas kylmät olosuhteet poikkeuksetta paransivat stabiilisuutta.

Effects of diet and crude oil ingestion on growth and biochemistry of captive-reared pigeon guillemots (Cepphus columba)Hovey, Andrew K. 01 October 2002 (has links)
The pigeon guillemot (Cepphus columba) population in Prince William
Sound has failed to recover from declines that occurred both before and after the
Exxon Valdez Oil Spill (EVOS). Post-spill studies of pigeon guillemot breeding
biology have identified three potential factors limiting recovery: (1) predation on
eggs and nestlings; (2) declines in the proportion of high-lipid, schooling forage
fish (sand lance [Ammodytes hexapterus], herring [Clupea pallasi], and capelin
[Mallotus villosus]) in the diet; and (3) continued exposure to residual oil from the
spill. This laboratory study with captive-reared pigeon guillemots at the Alaska
SeaLife Center investigated two aspects of the species' biology that are relevant to
restoration in the aftermath of EVOS. First, we investigated the role of dietary
factors (prey type, quantity of food consumed, dietary fat content, and energy
intake rate) in limiting the growth, development, survival, and fledging condition of
nestling pigeon guillemots. The objective was to understand how changes in prey
availability and prey quality might affect pigeon guillemot productivity. Second,
we fed nestlings sublethal doses of weathered Prudhoe Bay crude oil (PBCO) and
then measured several potential biomarkers of effects from this pollutant. These
dose-response experiments were designed to (1) better understand the impact on
nestling guillemots of petroleum hydrocarbons in food, (2) calibrate existing and
potential biomarkers of exposure to PBCO in pigeon guillemots in a controlled,
laboratory setting, and (3) develop better nondestructive biomarkers of exposure to
PBCO in pigeon guillemots in particular, and seabirds in general.
Results of feeding experiments indicated that most variation in nestling
growth rates could be explained by variation in daily energy intake. The type of
forage fish consumed, the lipid or protein content of the forage fish, and even the
quantity of food consumed daily did not have as strong an effect on nestling
guillemot growth as did daily energy intake. The metabolic efficiency and growth
performance of nestling guillemots was not enhanced on high-lipid diets, contrary
to results with nestlings of some other seabird species. Instead, structural growth
(wing length) in nestling guillemots was somewhat stunted on high-lipid diets.
These attributes of guillemot nutritional requirements are associated with the
guillemots' nearshore foraging niche and high food provisioning rates to nestlings.
The average lipid content of sand lance, juvenile herring, and capelin may represent
the optimal dietary lipid content for nestling pigeon guillemots. This study supports
the hypothesis that guillemot productivity is limited by the availability of these forage fishes through effects on energy provisioning rates to nestling guillemots.
Consequently, recovery of pigeon guillemot populations injured by EVOS is likely
linked to recovery of these key forage fish stocks.
Results of the oil-dosing experiments indicated that nestling guillemots are
resistant to small doses of weathered PBCO in their food. No nestlings died or
suffered noticeable health effects following dosing. The high dose in this study (0.5
ml kg����� day�����) was sufficient to induce hepatic cytochrome P450A1 (a liver enzyme
indicative of contaminant exposure), but growth rate, fledging mass, and blood
chemistry were largely unaffected. None of the 12 plasma or hematological
markers examined responded in a dose-dependent manner to ingestion of weathered
PBCO, except lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Although baseline stress hormone
(corticosterone) levels were not different between oil-dosed and control nestlings, a
standardized acute stress protocol revealed that corticosterone was more elevated
during stress for oiled nestlings compared to controls. Although we were not
successful in identifying a noninvasive biomarker (e.g., growth) or a blood
biomarker (e.g., haptoglobin) of crude oil exposure in nestlings, we were able to
confirm that levels of hepatic cytochrome P4SO1AI and corticosterone during
stress were elevated by the sublethal doses administered during our experiments.
Based on this and other studies, it is unlikely that the failure of pigeon guillemots to
recover from EVOS is due to effects on nestling health of residual oil in food. / Graduation date: 2003

Behavioral constraints on harlequin duck population recovery from the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, AlaskaRizzolo, Daniel J. 05 February 2004 (has links)
I investigated the relationship between harlequin duck (Histrionicus
histrionicus) behavior and lack of recovery from the Exxon Valdez oil spill in
Prince William Sound, Alaska. First, I evaluated the hypothesis that harlequin
ducks in winter have little flexibility to increase foraging time in response to
disturbance because they are constrained to forage during daylight. Eight radio-tagged
harlequin ducks wintering in Resurrection Bay, Alaska were monitored for
evidence of dive-feeding at night. Each radio-tagged individual was detected
during an average of 19.5 of 22 nocturnal monitoring sessions and signal loss
indicative of diving behavior was not detected during a total of 780 minutes of
signal monitoring. In contrast, the same 8 radio-tagged birds were detected during
an average of 9.1 of 12 daytime signal monitoring sessions and signal loss
indicated diving behavior during an average of 62 �� 7% of 5-minute daytime
monitoring periods (total of 364 minutes of signal monitoring). Thus the harlequin
ducks monitored in this study rarely, if ever, fed by diving at night, possibly due to
reduced foraging efficiency and (or) increased predation risk at night. This result
suggests that harlequin ducks in mid-winter may be severely time-limited in their
foraging, especially in northern parts of their winter range. Therefore, subtle
changes in energy requirements and (or) time-activity budgets as a result of
continued exposure to residual oil from the Exxon Valdez oil spill may affect the
ability of harlequin ducks to meet their daily energy requirements.
Second, I tested the hypothesis that exposure to crude oil affects time-activity
budgets of harlequin ducks. Controlled oil-dosing and plumage-oiling
experiments were conducted using adult female harlequin ducks in captivity. I
found no evidence that ingestion of weathered Prudhoe Bay crude oil affected the
occurrence of feeding activity during 30-minute observation periods, nor was there
evidence of effects on time spent feeding. Effects of crude oil ingestion on
maintenance activity were detected, but were neither consistent between the 2 years
of the study, nor dose-dependent for the 2 doses administered (2 and 20 mL kg�����
wk�����), and therefore did not strongly support an oil-dosing effect on maintenance
activity. Consequently, these results provided little support for the hypothesis that
oil ingestion affects time-activity budgets of captive harlequin ducks, at least for
the doses and conditions of captivity used in this study. Plumage-oiling reduced
feeding activity in captive harlequin ducks. The estimated probability of feeding
during 30-minute observation periods for birds in the high-exposure oiling group (5
mL of crude oil) was 53% less than that of non-oiled controls. Oiled birds
exhibited a trend of reduced time feeding with increasing level of external-oiling;
this effect was greatest among birds in the high-exposure oiling group, which spent
43% less time feeding than non-oiled birds. Reduced feeding was associated with
less time in the water dive-feeding and presumably lower heat loss. Trends in the
occurrence of maintenance activity and time spent in maintenance activity for birds
in the high-exposure treatment suggested plumage-oiling increased maintenance
activity, but results were not conclusive. The behavioral changes associated with
plumage-oiling in captivity would likely reduce fitness in the wild, where a high
proportion of time must be spent in the water feeding. If residual Exxon Valdez oil
sequestered in beach sediments enters the water column where it may be
encountered by harlequin ducks, external exposure may lead to reduced feeding
activity. This, in turn, may compromise survival, particularly during mid-winter
when the time available for diurnal foraging is low and maintenance energy

Development and application of a proteomic approach to the assessment of pollution in the marine environmentApraiz Larrucea, Itxaso January 2009 (has links)
Today, assessment of the health of coastal waters is recognized as being important for both the conservation of nature and well-being of humans. Anthropogenic pollution has been the focus of extensive research for some time and a variety of programs for the monitoring and assessment of environmental pollution have been developed. Determination of the levels of pollution in sensitive ‘sentinels’ such as mussels, allows monitoring of these levels in a given area over a prolonged period of time. Furthermore, the biological effects of pollution are reflected in a series of biomarkers, none of which provides a general picture of the sentinel’s state of health and all of which are individually specific for certain pollutants and influenced by both biotic and abiotic factors. In an attempt to improve biomonitoring of marine pollution, we have developed two proteomic approaches here. In the first portion of the thesis, a proteomic analysis was performed on peroxisomes isolated from mussels exposed either to one of three model anthropogenic pollutants, or two different types of crude oil, or from mussels exposed to the Prestige oil spill. Application of two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) provided protein expression signatures (PES) for exposure to these different pollutants.Furthermore, several individual protein components of these PES could be putatively identified. In the second portion of this work, such analysis of subproteomes was developed further in order to improve the applicability of this approach to biomonitoring. A simple fractionation procedure in combination with liquid chromatography and 2-DE provided samples from mussels residing in different regions of a pollution gradient around the harbor of Gothenburg, as well as from mussels exposed to two types of fuel oil similar to that of the Prestige that were suitable for environmental proteomics. In addition, we constructed a model for this approach that can be cross-validated in the future and applied to assess sources of fuel oil pollution in connection with biomonitoring programs.

La situation actuelle des règles relatives à la responsabilité civile de l'entrepreneur pour les dommages environnementaux provoqués par l’exploitation offshore d’hydrocarbure et le transport de ce produit par des navires pétroliers, démontre que le législateur a été de plus en plus concerné par la question de la santé environnementale. Cependant, il y a beaucoup de lacunes dans les lois nationales qui peuvent entraîner une incertitude juridique considérable pour l'entrepreneur et en même temps, ne pas fournir une protection adéquate à l'environnement et à l’homme. L’étude comparée des systèmes juridiques démontre qu’il est extrêmement important que les pays qui sont exposés aux périls des marées noires, notamment ceux qui exploitent des hydrocarbures dans la mer, disposent d’un fonds spécial d’indemnisation pour garantir et faciliter la restauration de l’environnement et le payement des indemnisations aux victimes. Outre la protection de l’environnement et des droits des citoyens, le fonds offre aussi la possibilité d’application des cas exceptés et de la limitation de responsabilité.
