Una variable linguística de Hispanoamérica : cómo incorporar el voseo al español de nuestros

Saldías Moraga, Soledad Makarena 07 August 2012 (has links)

Distribuce a funkční využití staročeského reflexiva "sě" / Distribution and functions of the reflexive morpheme sě in Old Czech

Pergler, Jiří January 2013 (has links)
The thesis deals with the functions of the reflexive form sě in Old Czech. In Chapter 2, existing literature about the Old Czech sě is reviewed, in Chapter 3, I describe the method of my research, comment on the data used for the analysis and present the functions of sě that have been identified. In Chapters 4, 5 and 6 (the key part of the thesis), I describe three functions of the reflexive form, i.e., three types of constructions containing the form sě: accusative form of the reflexive pronoun, spontaneity and agent demotion. I focus on the most important syntactic and semantic characteristics of the constructions, then I analyse especially the animacy of the syntactic subject and the verbal aspect; both these criteria proved to be relevant for the constructions in question. The functions I describe are prototypes, therefore they have no clear boundaries. Hence, I also point out the ambiguous cases whose classification is not clear. In Chapter 7, I compare and contrast the three functions and show the most important differences between the use of the reflexive form in Old Czech and in Modern Czech.

Accessibilité des référents en sémantique du discours / Accessibility of Referents in Discourse Semantics

Qian, Sai 07 November 2014 (has links)
This thesis has its roots in the standard Montagovian and dynamic semantic tradition. The subject is conditions under which a noun phrase may act as antecedent of a particular anaphoric expression. The work thesis deals with the accessibility of discourse referents using a formal system of dynamic semantics. The framework used is the one proposed by De Groote, Type Theoretic Dynamic Logic (TTDL) because it follows the Montagovian tradition and only makes use of standard mathematical and logical tools which allows to maintain compositionnality. We extend the coverage of TTDL to cases which are naturally problematic for classical dynamic semantic theories. In particularly, this thesis aims to extend TTDL's coverage of the accessibility of referents to two exceptions of classical dynamic theories, namely anaphora under double negation and modality. An adaptation is defined for each case and finally, an integration of various solutions is proposed, which shows the flexibility of TTDL

Os pronomes: uma classe de palavras léxico-gramaticais em retrospectiva

Araujo, Wagner Santos 06 June 2007 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T19:34:14Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 wagner.pdf: 1055713 bytes, checksum: 3024dcbe8c4fac7645f7a632dc71da0b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-06-06 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / The Dissertation is within the History Research Line and Description of the Portuguese Language/Post-Graduation Studies Program in Portuguese Language-PUCSP and focuses, by means of a historiography perspective, on the class of pronouns as object of the investigation, guided by the presupposition according to which the relationship between structure and linguistic function is inseparable: if there is a variation in the structure, then there is a variation in the function. The history of linguistics was the beginning point, whose grounds were the support for the building of the Greek and Latin grammar, extending them up to the current times, as the general purpose was aimed at the understanding of exposures or descriptions that enabled the understanding of the pronoun as a lexical and grammatical class, that is, in regards to its structure and functioning. In order to measure this general purpose, three specific objectives were established in view of the pronouns, in different stages of the building of the Traditional Contemporaneous Grammar, which became Normative in view of the creation of a model of linguistic policy, instituted by the Greek Estate. The first purpose focused on the treatment given to the pronouns by the Grammar of the Word; the second, by the Grammar of the Sentence, and the third, by the Descriptive or Scientific Grammar. The results presented in Chapter I guided the development of Chapters II and III: the non-dissociation between the units of the lexicon and its relationships, of morphosyntatic-semantic character, is the matrix by means of which the pronouns should be described, as the languages are classified in that manner. In this way, the pronouns are empty words, grammatical elements, whose contents come from the anaphoric relationship that they establish with the name they replace. This substitutive relationship needs to be seen by that one established between the name and the verb; as the content of the pronominal forms emerges from that relationship as an amalgam, which, by replacing the name in its relationship with the verb, binds the content of both of them - proposition conceived by Apolônio Díscolo for whom the pronoun was a paranonímia synonymy and a semiosis. It is evidenced that this presupposition contemporaneously retaken by the Speech Analysis, whose grounds are circumscribed to the theory of the enunciation got lost in the grammatical descriptions, although the Normative Grammar has been continuously re-contextualized. By means of this movement it continues being traditional in the innovation of the scientific advancements in the language field. Resulting from this process of reinterpretation of the past by the present, it extends the description centered in the word to the sentence, grounded on investigations of medieval philosophers and the taxonomic systematization of the substantive pronouns and the adjectives. However, the only grammars who focus on the pronouns because of their deictic and anaphoric functions are Evanildo Bechara Normative Grammar and Lucién Tesniére Dependency Grammar or Functional, enabling the assurance that these are the matrixes of the textual cohesion process: the voice of Apolônio in the modern times, the dialogue that allows the recognition of what is old in what is new / A Dissertação está situada na Linha de Pesquisa História e Descrição da Língua Portuguesa/Programa de Estudos Pós-Graduados em Língua Portuguesa-PUCSP e focaliza, por uma perspectiva historiográfica, a classe dos pronomes como objeto da investigação, orientada pelo pressuposto segundo o qual a relação entre estrutura e função lingüística é indissociável: havendo variação de estrutura, haverá variação de função.

[en] TU OR VOCÊ?: A MATTER OF CULTURAL IDENTITY / [pt] TU OU VOCÊ?: UMA QUESTÃO DE IDENTIDADE CULTURAL.

JANE CRISTINA DUARTE DOS SANTOS 17 October 2003 (has links)
[en] The general aim of this thesis is to describe the use of pronouns/forms of address in Portuguese as a Second Language. The specific aim is to identify the contexts which influence the choice of use by the learners, therefore to analise the construction of their linguistic identity. This thesis directs itself to the pronouns/forms of address TU vs VOCÊ and the building of a Portuguese- speaking identity: how do students of Portuguese acquire the skill in using these pronouns both in a Portuguese immersion situation, at PUC-Rio Portuguese courses and an English immersion situation, at Brown University`s Portuguese language courses? An ethnographic research was done with tape recording of Portuguese classes. The data were collected through interviews with some Professors and American students, oral activities, books, pedagogical materials and classroom observation. As result, we found a constant use of the pronoun você. This pronoun used with titles like diretor, doutor, professor can represent closeness or distance during the social relationship among American students, while they are speaking Portuguese. The linguistic identity is built on their cultural identities as well as other more as specific factors may be personal characteristics, interaction between foreign and Brazilian people among others.

Rúzné druhy reference zájmena "this" a odpovídající české ekvivalnty / Reference patterns of "this" and corresponding Czech equivalents

Čížková, Markéta January 2019 (has links)
This MA thesis is first of all concerned with the distribution of different types of reference of the English demonstrative pronoun this. Reference can be divided into exophoric (personal, spatial, temporal, discourse, social, empathetic, and emotional deixis), endophoric (anaphora and cataphora), and non-phoric reference (introductory and recognitional). The second aim of this thesis is to study the way by which the individual occurrences of the pronoun this with different reference are translated into the Czech language. The sample that was studied consisted of 219 occurrences of this collected from three British plays: The Caretaker (1960) by Harold Pinter, The Public Eye (1962) by Peter Shaffer, and The Real Inspector Hound (1968) by Tom Stoppard. The Czech translations of these plays were used for the second part of the research. The analysis of the plays showed that the most frequent type of reference of this is exophoric deictic reference, more precisely its subtype spatial deixis. The outcome of the translational analysis was the finding that this is most frequently translated by the Czech demonstrative pronoun ten. Keywords: demonstrative pronoun this, reference distribution, exophora, deixis, endophora, non-phoric reference, Czech translation equivalents

Entity-based coherence in statistical machine translation : a modelling and evaluation perspective

Wetzel, Dominikus Emanuel January 2018 (has links)
Natural language documents exhibit coherence and cohesion by means of interrelated structures both within and across sentences. Sentences do not stand in isolation from each other and only a coherent structure makes them understandable and sound natural to humans. In Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) only little research exists on translating a document from a source language into a coherent document in the target language. The dominant paradigm is still one that considers sentences independently from each other. There is both a need for a deeper understanding of how to handle specific discourse phenomena, and for automatic evaluation of how well these phenomena are handled in SMT. In this thesis we explore an approach how to treat sentences as dependent on each other by focussing on the problem of pronoun translation as an instance of a discourse-related non-local phenomenon. We direct our attention to pronoun translation in the form of cross-lingual pronoun prediction (CLPP) and develop a model to tackle this problem. We obtain state-of-the-art results exhibiting the benefit of having access to the antecedent of a pronoun for predicting the right translation of that pronoun. Experiments also showed that features from the target side are more informative than features from the source side, confirming linguistic knowledge that referential pronouns need to agree in gender and number with their target-side antecedent. We show our approach to be applicable across the two language pairs English-French and English-German. The experimental setting for CLPP is artificially restricted, both to enable automatic evaluation and to provide a controlled environment. This is a limitation which does not yet allow us to test the full potential of CLPP systems within a more realistic setting that is closer to a full SMT scenario. We provide an annotation scheme, a tool and a corpus that enable evaluation of pronoun prediction in a more realistic setting. The annotated corpus consists of parallel documents translated by a state-of-the-art neural machine translation (NMT) system, where the appropriate target-side pronouns have been chosen by annotators. With this corpus, we exhibit a weakness of our current CLPP systems in that they are outperformed by a state-of-the-art NMT system in this more realistic context. This corpus provides a basis for future CLPP shared tasks and allows the research community to further understand and test their methods. The lack of appropriate evaluation metrics that explicitly capture non-local phenomena is one of the main reasons why handling non-local phenomena has not yet been widely adopted in SMT. To overcome this obstacle and evaluate the coherence of translated documents, we define a bilingual model of entity-based coherence, inspired by work on monolingual coherence modelling, and frame it as a learning-to-rank problem. We first evaluate this model on a corpus where we artificially introduce coherence errors based on typical errors CLPP systems make. This allows us to assess the quality of the model in a controlled environment with automatically provided gold coherence rankings. Results show that this model can distinguish with high accuracy between a human-authored translation and one with coherence errors, that it can also distinguish between document pairs from two corpora with different degrees of coherence errors, and that the learnt model can be successfully applied when the test set distribution of errors comes from a different one than the one from the training data, showing its generalization potentials. To test our bilingual model of coherence as a discourse-aware SMT evaluation metric, we apply it to more realistic data. We use it to evaluate a state-of-the-art NMT system against post-editing systems with pronouns corrected by our CLPP systems. For verifying our metric, we reuse our annotated parallel corpus and consider the pronoun annotations as proxy for human document-level coherence judgements. Experiments show far lower accuracy in ranking translations according to their entity-based coherence than on the artificial corpus, suggesting that the metric has difficulties generalizing to a more realistic setting. Analysis reveals that the system translations in our test corpus do not differ in their pronoun translations in almost half of the document pairs. To circumvent this data sparsity issue, and to remove the need for parameter learning, we define a score-based SMT evaluation metric which directly uses features from our bilingual coherence model.

臺灣話「人」的言談功能 / Discourse Functions of Lang in Spoken Taiwanese

劉淑茹, Liu, Shu Ru Unknown Date (has links)
The present study investigates the behavior of the non-referential lang and the functions it performs in Taiwanese spoken discourse. Based on Schiffrin's (1987) model of discourse coherence, lang. plays roles on the five planes of discourse. The predominant function of lang is found in the ideational structure, where it explicitly marks contrastive relations between propositions. In the action structure, it prefaces speech acts like defense, dispute, and refutal when a speaker disagrees the other participant's accusation, assertion, and request. In the exchange structure, it is employed to claim/fight for or retain the turn. In the information state, it signals contrasts between the upcoming proposition and speaker knowledge or speaker/hearer meta-knowledge. In the participation framework, it functions to change the relative relations between interlocutors in a conversation and to indicate a discrepancy between interlocutors in the subjective attitude toward an event. As a whole, lancr serves as a contrastive marker, thus informing a discontinuity in a discourse. The syntactic distribution of lang and its co-occurrence restrictions with Taiwanese sentence-final particles further support our analysis that lang functionsas a marker of contrast.

台灣大學生英文議論文中人稱代名詞使用之功能分析 / A functional analysis of personal pronoun use in argumentation by Taiwanese college students

張銀玲, Chang, Yin Ling Unknown Date (has links)
In response to the call for the incorporation of interpersonal dimension into the writing pedagogy, this study provides a functional analysis of personal pronouns—an explicit interpersonal marker—used in argumentative texts by Taiwanese college students. The purpose is to see how students of different proficiency levels construct the writer-reader relationship through personal pronouns during the composition. The first part of the study centers on the analysis of 76 learner essays. They are first rated and sorted into three groups of different quality—High, Mid, and Low. Later, the linguistic forms associated with personal pronouns are examined, and the discourse functions personal pronouns fulfill in contexts are also identified. The results of the text analysis are further supplemented by the post-writing questionnaires and the oral interviews on students to obtain more in-depth discovery and interpretation. While the questionnaire aims to reveal how the students perceive argumentative writing, the interview intends to find out the reasons for their choices of personal pronouns. The results have shown that the use of personal pronouns in the three groups differs in quantity, type and distribution. The High group writers use significantly fewer pronouns than the other two. Moreover, the students use personal pronouns with salient accompanying linguistic forms (e.g. verbs, modals, emphatic markers) to perform various discourse functions, and students of different levels also vary in maneuvering the functions. Overall, the Low group writers tend to be more self-involved, and the Mid group writers are more likely to include in-group and out-group members in discourse. The High group writers, however, present their arguments more objectively. In selecting personal pronouns, the students usually take account of the interrelationship among the writer, the reader and the text, on whose basis the alternatives between subjectivity and objectivity, authority and modesty, intimacy and detachment, or directness and indirectness are weighed. In general, the students use more personal appeals to achieve mutual solidarity with the reader and to intensify their convictions as well, which reflects humaneness and collectivism that have been highly valued in Taiwanese culture. The study has found that the students' strategic choices of personal pronouns in argumentative writing are usually functionally and interpersonally-oriented.

Får man ta en bulle? : En undersökning av elevers översättning av pronomenet man till engelska / May I Take a Bun? : A Study of Swedish Students' Translation of the Pronoun Man into English

Otter, Harriet January 2008 (has links)
Valet av you som motsvarighet till man är dock övervägande och eftersom detta val signalerar informalitet kan kommunikationen påverkas.</p> / <p>One of the goals of the Swedish national curriculum is that students develop a communicative and social competence. According to the English B-level syllabus, the students should among other things develop their ability to adjust language use to the situation. The indefinite pronoun man is a frequent occurrence in the Swedish language. Translating this word requires an understanding of situation as well as register. The study examines how the students handle the translation of man and if they know when the situation requires formal or informal language. The result shows that they can handle the translation in most cases even though they have not been given much instruction on the problem. However, the choice of you as a correspondence to man is predominant, and since this choice signals informality communication might be affected.</p>
