No Title IX in Journalism: An Analysis of Subject Gender in Newspaper Sports ColumnsBostic, Jordan 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine gender bias in sports media from the perspective of the sports columnist. The research analyzed 1,082 sports columns written by ten columnists (five male, five female) at newspapers across the United States. The columns were scrutinized to determine if the column subject was male or female. Results found that 84.4% of the sports columns were written about male athletes or men's sports compared to only 9% devoted to female athletes and women's sports. The research also found that female sports columnists write about female sports 12.7% of the time, while male sports columns only dedicate 6% of their columns to female athletes or women's sports. Newspapers with a larger circulation were more likely to have sports columns about female sports than were newspapers with smaller readerships. Six of the columnists were then interviewed to get their opinions on gender issues in sports journalism.

Timeout i sportjournalistiken : En kvantitativ studie av genus i svensk sportjournalistik / Timeout in sports journalism : A quantitative study of gender in Swedish sports journalismFuneland, Ida, Johansson, Lisa, Sundberg, Tova January 2020 (has links)
Nyckelord: kön, idrottsutövare, #metoo, täckningstal, skribentens kön, sportjournalistik / Purpose: The purpose of the essay is to examine differences in how male and female athletes are portrayed in Swedish newspaper sports journalism, through three central factors (1) time perspective, (2) coverage rate and (3) the gender of the author. Research questions: • Has #metoo affected the portrayal of genders in Swedish sports journalism? • Does the coverage rate of the newspaper affect the portrayal of genders in Swedish sports journalism? • Does the gender of the author affect the portrayal of genders in Swedish sports journalism? Theories: Agenda setting theory, Framing theory, The Spiral of Silence, Media logic Method: In this study we have been using the method quantitative content analysis. We've used this method on two Swedish newspapers; Aftonbladet and Nya Wermlands-tidningen. We’ve examined 80 articles, 40 from each newspaper, collected from the digital platform Retriever. After we collected the data it was processed in IBM SPSS Statistics, where we created cross tabulations. With the result we analysed and discussed our way to a conclusion. Conclusion: Initially we draw the conclusion that male athletes were overrepresented in Swedish newspapers’ sports journalism, while female athletes were underrepresented. We can also draw the conclusions that male athletes were given more space than female athletes seen to word scope, images and the number of people being written about. Further we can draw the conclusion that newspaper wrote more about male athletes after #metoo than they did before #metoo. We can also draw the conclusion that both the nationwide paper (Aftonbladet) and the local paper (Nya Wermlands-tidningen) tended to write more about male athletes than female. Nevertheless the local paper held a more equal reporting than the nationwide. At last we can conclude that male journalists wrote more about male athletes while female journalists were more equal in their reporting. Several of the differences are however small. Key words: gender, athletes, #metoo, coverage rate, the gender of the writer, sports journalism

The aim of this study is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the underrepresentation of women working as sports journalists at local newspapers in Sweden. This study also aims to investigate how the Swedish Union of Journalists works to improve gender equality for female sports journalists. A qualitative semi-structured interview method is used to fulfill the aims of the study. The theoretical framework used are Kanter's theory of tokenism and Altheide and Snow's theory of media logic. The results shows that sports journalism faces a number of challenges in the work for gender equality, such as an excluding masculine culture, harassments in the field, difficulty of finding women to recruit and a need to prioritize more women in sports media to make women a more natural part of sports. The Swedish Union of Journalists mainly educates, provides equality projects and support female sport journalists regarding unequal conditions.

Caso: Paolo Guerrero / Influence of the written press in the construction of the image of a soccer player. Case: Paolo GuerreroCastaños Sarmiento, María Milagros 28 November 2019 (has links)
This research has a double purpose: on the one hand, to investigate and analyze the construction of the image of Paolo Guerrero, current captain of the Peruvian National Soccer Team, through the journalistic discourse of the sports press (Depor and El Bocon) during the process of the Russia 2018 Qualifiers. And, on the other, the influence of this media construction on Peruvian fans. For this, three representative parties were taken as an example in which the Peruvian striker manages to score (Chile, Argentina and Colombia). It is projected that the sports discourse of the written press has contributed positively to the construction of the public image of the soccer player. What we try to demonstrate in this work, is what have been the discursive resources to inform about the goals of Paolo Guerrero and thus, hand in hand, how these covers and articles have influenced the population to create a positive image of the player. / Tesis

: En kvalitativ intervjustudie om svensk sportjournalistik / How far am I willing to go to make sure my text gets readers? : A qualitative interview study about Swedish sports journalismHallin Ekesand, Samuel January 2021 (has links)
The title of the study is: How long am I prepared to go for my text to get some readers? A qualitative interview-based study about Swedish sports journalism. The aim of this study is to figure out what underlying factors which affects the journalisms news values and selection on news based on which sports that get editorial space. The paper approaches the subject with a specific viewpoint from the sport floorball, which is the largest indoor-sport in Sweden. Though it’s relative size, the sport seems to have an issue: it does not reach out. It gets a lot less coverage and media attention compared with other similar sports, such as ice hockey for example. The development of the sport has been discussed through the years, and a part of that has been an less flattering image as a hobby, not a sport. A part of the discussion has also circulated around the argument that the sport doesn´t get the media coverage it needs. Some essays have been written on the subjects on journalism and media from the point of news value although very little has been done with a combined view on sports, which is why I argue that there is a gap in the research field which this study will partly fill. This work looks at what the sports media in Sweden are focusing on in terms of coverage and what the sport floorball can do to get more coverage. Since the 2020/21 season, the Swedish newspaper SportExpressen streams every game in the top league for both women and men. The theoretical framework in this study is based on the theory of gate-keeping and the commercialization of the media industry which has been put forward by Stromback and Jonsson. The chosen method of the work is a qualitative interview study which consists of an semi-structured interview with four news editors on four Swedish news papers. The results of the study shows that the news editors believe that floorball get as much coverage as they deserve. There are several factors that affect contemporary sports journalism. One reason is that today´s journalism is well driven by digital metrics. This development in news values and news selection seems to derive from the technological development in the profession, as well as the commercialization.

The relationship between sports journalism and entertainment journalism. Case studies: Jean Deza and his acts of indiscipline (jan 2020 – mar 2020) acording to sports newspapers Depor and LiberoAlvarez Wong, Alonso Samuel 07 December 2020 (has links)
Nowadays sports journalism and enterntaiment journalism are related. It is because sports journalism take enterntaiment journalism as a source for the news the give. That´s something that happens not only in Perú but also in Latin America and other parts of the world.
Sports Journalism in Peru has soccer as a pillar because that´s the most popular sport around the country. Sports newspapers also give informations about other sports, but most of their pager are related to soccer. Some newspapers have taken enterntainment journalism as a source and started to post news about the private life of the soccer players and started to link their private life with the performance that they give when they play a match.
This research aims to contribute with information about sports journalism, enterntainment journalism and hoy they are related. Also, this research aims to contribute with sports journalism and make it better in Peru. The research question is What is the realtion between sports journalism and enterntainment journalism? The hypothesis is: Sports journalism takes enterntainment journalism as a source and the enterntainment journalism perceive the soccer players as characters of the enterntainment, that´s why they post about their private lifes.
I have decided to use the Jean Deza´s indiscipline case when he was an Alianza Lima soccer player as a study case and how the sports newspapers Libero and Depor treated it. / Trabajo de investigación

Jill Jackson: Pioneering in the Press BoxPerkins, Katherine C 16 December 2016 (has links)
Jill Jackson was one of the first female sports journalists and a pioneer voice for women in athletics. Although heretofore overlooked in the history of American sports journalism, the story of her career is an addition not only to the historiography of female sports journalists but also to the broader study of women in the mid-twentieth century. Jackson was admired, a hard worker, from a prominent New Orleans family, and well educated, yet she still was treated unequally in her primary workspace—the press box. Jackson left well-documented story to the Nadine Vorhoff Library and Special Collections at Newcomb College Institute in New Orleans. The collection, comprised of scrapbooks, photographs, letters, and newspaper articles, reveal the struggles and rewards of her impressive career.
