Historically, sport has been a male phenomenon and this has also left an impression onsports coverage from the media. There has always been an imbalance in reportingbetween the sexes, but in recent years it has been possible to see an improvement froman equality perspective. The purpose of this essay is to find out how the local sportsnewsrooms work for equal sports coverage, and what obstacles and difficulties there areto get the reporting completely equal. To answer the study's questions, a structuredinterview is conducted with three sports managers and five sports journalists from fourdifferent local newsrooms in Sweden, to get their views on the job towards equal sportscoverage.The essay uses four different theories that are used as a basis and help when theinterview answers are analyzed in the results and the discussion. The theories used arethe agenda theory, framing theory, the gender theory and the gatekeeping theory. Theprevious research shows varying results on equal sports coverage. Several studies haveconcluded that there are more female sports journalists who are making an effort formore equal coverage, while other studies believe that interest in women's sports hasincreased after newspapers made a stronger investment in women's sports.The essay uses a qualitative interview study and a thematic analysis to be able tointerpret the experiences and perceptions of the interviewees. The method is best suitedwhen it comes to studying people's behavior and values in society, which fits well withthe essay's purpose.The results show that the local sports editors work daily for equal sports coverage, butthat it is not as simple as one might think. There are a number of factors that emerged inthe results that make it more difficult to achieve completely equal coverage. The numberof elite teams each catchment area has, the inroads of commercialization and theeconomy of the newspaper, as well as old norms and how it has looked throughouthistory are the factors that all interviewees highlight as playing a big role in why thereporting is still not equal between the sexes. This essay shows that the problem stillexists but that it has gotten better, and that hard work is being done to get as equal areporting as possible.

The strong men and the good looking women : Quantitative content analysis of the visual representation of athletes in Swedish digital sports journalism / De starka männen och de snygga kvinnorna : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av den visuella representationen av atleter i svensk sportjournalistik

Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to examine if the quantity of female athletes is lesser than male athletes and if there are any gender differences in this visual representation of athletes in Swedish digital sports journalism. The thesis also aims to investigate if the visual representation of female athletes has changed over time in connection to the #MeToo movement.   Research questions: RQ1: Are there any differences in the quantity of visual coverage given to female athletes and male athletes in Swedish sports media?  RQ2: Is there any difference in the visual portrayal of female athletes in comparison to male athletes? RQ3: Has the visual coverage of female athletes in Swedish sports media changed or remained the same since the #MeToo movement?   Theories: Agenda setting theory, Framing theory, Hegemonic masculinity and emphasized femininity, Gender performance, Gatekeeping and Media logic   Method: The study is based on visual quantitative content analysis. The empirical material of the analysis consists of 224 photographs from digital sports articles, originated from the two Swedish sports newspapers Sportbladet and SVT Sport. The articles were collected from the digital platform Retriever through a digital article search with the keyword “sport”. After collecting the data, it was processed in data program IBM SPSS Statistics, where cross tabulations were created. The results were analyzed and discussed in order to reaching a conclusion.   Conclusion: There is a higher quantity of male athletes than female athletes in Swedish sports media. There are small differences in the way female athletes and male athletes are visually portrayed. However, these differences show that female athletes are more often are shown in an emphasized feminine way, which contributes to proving the dominance of hegemonic masculinity. There are no major changes in the visual portrayal of female athletes before and after the #MeToo, however the result shows a somewhat equal coverage even before the #MeToo movement happened. The results of the study are partially supported by previous research and theory on the subject where female athletes are underrepresented and sexualized. / Syfte: Studiens syfte är att undersöka om det är färre kvinnliga idrottare än manliga idrottare som visas i bilderna, samt om det finns några könsskillnader i dessa visuella representationer av idrottare i den digitala svenska idrottsjournalistiken. Studien syftar även till att undersöka om den visuella representationen av kvinnliga idrottare har förändrats över tid i samband med #MeToo-rörelsen.   Frågeställningar: F1 Är det någon skillnad i antalet visuella representationer av kvinnliga idrottare respektive manliga idrottare i den svenska idrottsjournalistiken? F2 Finns det några skillnad i sportartiklars visuella representation av kvinnliga idrottare jämfört med manliga idrottare?   F3 Har den visuella representationen av kvinnor förändrats eller varit densamma sedan efter #MeToo-rörelsen?   Teoretiska ramverk: Dagordningsteorin, gestaltningsteorin, hegemonisk maskulinitet och ideal femininitet, gender performance, gatekeeping och medielogik   Metod: Studien baseras på visuell kvantitativ innehållsanalys. Analysens empiriska material består av 224 fotografier från digitala sportartiklar, härstammande från de två svenska sporttidningarna Sportbladet och SVT Sport. Artiklarna samlades in från den digitala plattformen Retriever genom en digital artikelsökning med nyckelordet "sport". Efter att ha samlat in data bearbetades det i dataprogrammet IBM SPSS Statistics där tvärtabeller skapades. Resultaten analyserades och diskuterades för att nå en slutsats.   Slutsats: Det förekommer fler manliga idrottare än kvinnliga idrottare i bilderna i svenska sportjournalistik. Det är små skillnader i hur kvinnliga idrottare framställs visuellt i jämförelse med manliga idrottare. Dessa skillnader visar dock att kvinnliga idrottare oftare visas i ett betonat feminint sätt, vilket bidrar till att bevisa dominansen hos hegemonisk maskulinitet. Det finns inga större förändringar i den visuella skildringen av kvinnliga idrottare före och efter # MeToo, resultatet visar också en något lika täckning redan innan #MeToo-rörelsen. Resultaten av studien stöds delvis av tidigare forskning och teori i ämnet där kvinnliga idrottare är underrepresenterade och sexualiserade.

In this paper, I deal with the issue of press conferences after matches of 1st soccer league. My goal is in the first place to describe press conferences as a part of public relations and as one of main and most important categories of respondents interacting with journalists. In the first part of my master thesis I examine sports journalism and its specifics and differences against other fields of this profession. For research itself I used techniques of observation and questioning, but mainly I worked with the data gained during interviews and information obtained by myself, as an involved observer. During my observation I have visited 14 press conferences throughout one season of 1st soccer league in total that took place all around Czech Republic. The goals of researching these events were its course, specifically how long the events were and in which environment, but also what are the rules for its organisation and how those rules are complied. Another subject of my research was a position of a spokespersons and work of journalists, whose job is to question. I was also interested in a manner of questioning and topics of questions in this area. Among main conclusions of my thesis there is significantly larger focus of media on the three biggest Czech soccer teams which are Slavia Prague, Sparta...

The purpose of this study was to examine how the Swedish sports journalism, tabloids and local newspapers, portrayed the Swedish national football team during the 2018 Russia World Cup and Malmö FF in the 2015/2016 Champions League competition. The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between sports journalism and nationality. The question formulations to this study were: how does the sports journalism portray the Swedish national team and Malmö FF, and what are the similarities and differences between Aftonbladets and Sydsvenskans portrayal of the teams?   I made a discourse analysis out of twelve chronicles, six from Aftonbladet and six from Sydsvenkan. For each of the three group stage games Sweden played in the World Cup, I analyzed one chronicle from both Aftonbladet and Sydsvenskan. Further, I analyzed one chronicle from Aftonbladet and one from Sydsvenskan for each of the three home games Malmö FF played in the Champions League. It turned out that Aftonbladet portrayed Sweden with a lot of metaphors and wrote about the Swedish national team as if the readers were a part of the team. Aftonbladet had more distance and caution when portraying Malmö FF. With Sydsvenskan it was the contrary. Sydsvenskan portrayed Malmö FF as if they were a part of the team and occasionally seemed to be biased. Sydsvenskan portrayed the Swedish national with more caution, distance and did not portray Sweden with the same empathy as Malmö FF.

O objetivo é detectar como os jornalistas escolhidos lidam com a mobilização passional implicada no futebol, traduzida em paixão pelos clubes, e que contextos culturais são acionados nesse processo. No Rio Grande do Sul, o acirramento entre seus dois principais clubes constitui-se dentro de construções culturais das quais, pressupõem-se, participa a crônica esportiva produzida pelos jornais de referência. A pesquisa trabalha com conceitos advindos dos estudos de gêneros jornalísticos, da tribo e comunidade jornalística formulados por Nelson Traquina, e do circuito comunicacional juntamente com seus códigos, presentes nos estudos de Stuart Hall. No campo da prática jornalística são abordados pensamentos de ética, com destaque para Eugênio Bucci e do discurso como gênero, de Márcia Benetti. Contribuições de outras áreas que englobam o futebol são retiradas também dos estudos de Roberto da Matta, Fausto Neto e Ronaldo Helal, entre outros autores. Acredita-se que a proposta possa contribuir para o entendimento dos procedimentos jornalísticos nessa área, da construção de opiniões e suas complexidades em território minado de passionalidade e para o exercício da crítica sobre jornalismo esportivo no sentido de qualificar seus processos. / The paper makes an analysis of the material opinionated about soccer in two newspapers of Porto Alegre, Zero Hora and Correio do Povo, focusing on chronic around disputes between Grêmio and Internacional, and also interviews with the authors of the selected columns. The goal is to detect and deal with journalists chosen mobilizing passion involved in football, translated into passion for the clubs, and cultural contexts that are triggered in this process. In Rio Grande do Sul, the intensification between its two main club is within the cultural constructions of which presuppose, participates chronic sports produced by leading newspapers. Research works with concepts based on studies of journalistic genres, the tribe and the journalistic community formulated by Nelson Traquina and circuit communication with their codes, present in studies of Stuart Hall. In the field of journalistic practice thoughts of ethics are discussed, with emphasis on Eugenio Bucci and discourse as genre Marcia Benetti. Contributions from other areas that encompass football are also drawn from studies by Roberto da Matta, Fausto Neto and Ronaldo Helal, among other authors. It is believed that the proposal will contribute to the understanding of journalistic procedures in this area, the construction of their opinions and complexities of passionateness mined territory and the exercise of criticism on sports journalism in order to qualify their processes.

Orientador: Marcos Américo / Resumo: O projeto consiste na criação e gerenciamento de um portal de jornalismo esportivo abastecido por mulheres profissionais da comunicação, ESPORTIVAS (esportivas.net.br). Contemplando a modalidade considerada “paixão nacional”, o futebol, mas com destaque para a categoria feminina tão esquecida pelas grandes mídias e conglomerados de comunicação. Entre as principais questões que este projeto abrange está a inclusão da mulher no esporte, tanto no que se refere às atletas, quanto à de mulheres profissionais da comunicação, que ainda hoje lutam por direito e espaço iguais em coberturas esportivas, se colocando além do objeto decorativo ou sexualizado nestas transmissões. Assim, o projeto busca dar visibilidade as mulheres: atletas, membros de comissões técnicas, de arbitragem, e profissionais de comunicação em áreas ainda marginalizadas para o gênero feminino, como a narração esportiva. O projeto utiliza como metodologia a aplicação de entrevistas e questionários, estudo de caso e revisão bibliográfica. <p>The goal with our research has been to describe how often and in what way female athletes are represented in the sport section in Sweden’s biggest evening newspaper Aftonbladet. The material we’ve used are the newspapers that we collected during two weeks in 2008, the 3<sup>rd</sup> of November to the 9<sup>th</sup> of November and the 11<sup>th</sup> of November to the 17<sup>th</sup> of November. We’ve conduced two qualitative researches – a text analysis and an image analysis – and one quantitative analysis on our material. We’ve based our analysis on, among others, theories on the sportmediacomplex, critique feministic analysis and normative theory.</p><p>       In these articles women are designed into four different stereotypes. We’ve chosen to call them the star, the victim, the sensation and the absent. On the basis on our theories we believe that these four stereotypes are creating more sexism and in that way they are contributing to the suppressing of women as a whole.</p><p>       Our quantitative analysis shows that men occur more frequent on the sport pages than women. Almost nine of ten of the articles in Sportbladet are about men and male athletes. We believe that in this way Sportbladet contributes to the invisibilisation of female athletes and further more to the discrimination of women.</p>

A content analysis of photographic images and gender in The source sports, Sports illustrated for women, Sports illustrated, and ESPN magazine

This study examined sports photographs in fifty-two issues (thirteen issues each) of The Source Sports, Sports Illustrated for Women. Sports Illustrated and ESPN Magazine for gender differences in the way athletes are visually portrayed. Duncan and Sayaovong's 1990 study was used as the foundation for this new study.The content analysis revealed quantitative differences in photographic depictions of female and male athletes. Like the previous study, gender differences were found in the overall number of photographs of female and male athletes. These photographs were then broken down into one-half page, full-page and pull-out photographs. Gender differences were also found in the number of male and female athletes on the cover of the magazines, and the level of activity or inactivity associated with athletes. Unlike the previous study, the researcher found no gender differences in prominent and supporting positions when both men and women were featured in a photograph and no difference in camera angles. / Department of Journalism

"Det han gjorde sedan har ingen någonsin upplevt" : En studie av framing inom lokal sportjournalistik

This study aims to gain greater knowledge about the use of framing in local sports journalism. We did this by doing a qualitative content analysis of the local Swedish newspaper Barometern/OT and it’s coverage of the largest local football team, Kalmar FF. We randomly selected six of the team’s games during 2014 and analysed all the texts that had to do with the games, except for shorter texts and texts that are supposed to be based on personal opinions, such as chronicles. The results show that Barometern/OT have a tendency of defending individual players and giving them positive criticism, while they much more often give negative criticism to the team as a whole. Also, we found signs that Barometern/OT contributed to creating a local imagined community by having a incomplete use of names at a few times, amongst other factors. Because of these observations we noticed that the editorial staff both contributed to creating a local imagined community and that they were a part of it themselves.

São abordados o jornalismo esportivo nos meios de comunicação de massa, a gestão da produção de televisão que engloba o planejamento, a produção e as formas de veiculação, marketing esportivo e o futebol como negócio. É identificado o processo de gestão da produção de programas na televisão digital, por meio de aplicação de questionário aberto que permitiu também o entendimento de como é realizado o conteúdo esportivo capturado para os programas, a partir da digitalização. É analisado, após análise dos referenciais teóricos, mapeamento do mercado esportivo, levantamento de dados, bem como a configuração atual da gestão da produção no canal de televisão por assinatura e como a equipe de produção dos programas percebe as mudanças ocorridas após a implantação da televisão digital e as perspectivas para o futuro com as ferramentas digitais / Abstract: This dessertation analyzes the productiuon managementof shows "Redação SporTV", "Arena SporTV" and "SportTV News", from SporTV, a channel belonging to GloboSat, during the digitalization process in Brazil. This work discusses sports reporting in the mass communication media, management of television production that encompasses the planning, production and ways of serving, and soccer as a sport marketing business. We have identified the process of managing the production of digital television programs through the application of polls which also allowed the understanding of how the content is performed for the sports programs considering the digital television.
