[pt] NENHUM DE VOCÊS O CONHECE BEM: A ATOPIA SOCRÁTICA E SEUS ELEMENTOS ERÓTICOS E DIONISÍACOS NO BANQUETE DE PLATÃO / [en] NONE OF YOU KNOW HIM WELL: THE SOCRATIC ATOPY AND THE EROTICS AND DIONYSIAC ELEMENTS IN THE PLATO S SYMPOSIUM

ANDRÉ MIRANDA DECOTELLI DA SILVA 29 January 2020 (has links)
[en] This thesis is part of a provocation enunciated by the character Alcibiades in his speech in Plato s Symposium dialogue: None of you know him well. This phrase concerns the unintelligibility and consequent incomparability of Socrates, identified by the symposiasta as atopy, a non-place. Beginning from this term, we reach to analyze the clues that the character speeches about the philosopher presents about him, correlating them to others, that occurs in the Platonic piece in general and that consolidates the atopy of Socrates. Thus, we developed an analysis of Socrates as an atopic being both in his physiognomy as in his behavior and words, these three areas of the philosopher s life being what we call this thesis of axes, methodological bases according to which we ll develop the analysis of his atopy. As the main thread of all these axes, we will have the central presence of the divine figures of Eros and Dionysus, both presented at the Symposium as the main references from which Socrates will live his atopy. In Eros field, we will analyze the foundation of Diotima s narrative about this god, with his intermediate and daimonic character, which will be associated with Socrates in an evident way in the speech of the priestess of Mantineia. In the matter of the Dionysian aspect, it will appear permeating the whole dialogue, but will be found, in particular, in the figure of the satyrs and silenos, mythological beings of the Dionysian circle that will be associated with Socrates by Alcibiades. We postulate, therefore, as the central thesis of this work, that Socrates is atomic because his philosophy will be an integrated exercise of his body, his acts and his words, as parts of his erotic and Dionysian being.

Constructive drinking in the Roman Empire : the first to third centuries AD

Mudd, Shaun Anthony January 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores ancient ideas regarding the constructive properties of intoxicating drinks, as presented in Greco-Roman sources from the first to third centuries AD. In doing so, it responds to Mary Douglas' Constructive Drinking (1987), which emphasised that, contrary to anthropological findings, many societies' authorities tend to focus upon, and overemphasise, the destructive aspects of alcohol consumption. This pattern is particularly prevalent in modern Western scholarship. The same trend can be detected within both Greco-Roman society and classical scholarship. Although many Greeks and Romans undoubtedly consumed quantities of wine, on a regular basis, in a manner which was widely considered 'moderate', the literary evidence from this period tends to focus most heavily upon excessive and/or destructive drinking. Similarly, much of the modern scholarship which addresses drinking in the Roman Empire focuses upon drunkenness and the destructive aspects of drinking. Yet it is clear that Greco-Roman society considered wine consumption to be significantly beneficial, in a wide variety of ways, provided that moderation was employed. The destructive consequences of drinking were almost exclusively associated with excessive and inappropriate consumption. In reaction to this bias in the sources and scholarship, this thesis undertakes a re-reading of the ancient evidence through the 'Constructive Drinking' lens. It identifies and explores the ways in which the Greeks and Romans of this period considered drinking to be important, useful, or otherwise 'constructive' to the individual and society. Where possible, this thesis attempts to identify how important and widespread such beliefs were. This thesis has two main areas of focus. First, the ways in which intoxicating drink was considered to be constructive for an individual's health and wellbeing. Second, the ways in which intoxicating drink was considered to be of social benefit to both individuals and groups. This thesis accordingly provides a fresh perspective on drinking in antiquity, and illustrates the methodological significance of the Constructive Drinking lens for future research.

Lanoue, Andrés 08 1900 (has links)
The present work has as its main focus Plato's dramaturgy in the Symposium and the Phaedo. The former studies both Alcibiades' speech and the epilogue whilst paralleling some of their elements with relevant passages from the Republic and the Seventh Letter. In doing so, it reveals an instance of Socratic withholding of information - as understood by the platonic school of Tübingen and Milan - and sheds light upon the existence of a set of unwritten doctrines philosophically higher than the ones contained in the dialogues. On the basis of these conclusions, I come to discern a hermeneutics in the epilogue according to which there are three hierarchical levels of comprehension to Plato's dialogues: exteriority, interiority of and oral philosophy - said three levels being symbolised by the comic poet Aristophanes, the tragic poet Agathon and the philosopher Socrates. The exegetic essay on the Phaedo revolves around Socrates' last will, which comes at the end of a ''dramatic'' sequence exceeding the bounds of the discursive philosophy that seeks to prove the immortality of the soul during the major part of the dialogue. By aiming at this sequence as well as at the introduction, one comes to see that comedy carries the mandate of counterbalancing tragedy in order to overcome the philosophically reprehensible emotions it fosters. Whilst contrasting tragedy and comedy, Socrates' last words fulfill, on a mimetic level, a paraenetic design, insofar as they invite the Athenian reader, indeed every reader, to philosophically overcome common places in regards to death.

Plato and Shakespeare: The Influence of Phaedrus and Symposium on A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Unknown Date (has links)
Many scholars who study Plato and Shakespeare together focus only on erotic love between lovers or nonsexual love between others. A closer study of A Midsummer Night’s Dream shows that Shakespeare uses Plato’s concepts of the soul in addition to the Forms, the guide, as well as staging the varieties of love that can exist between two individuals and the dangers of loving the physical more than the mind. Shakespeare takes these ideas embedded in Symposium and Phaedrus and not only crafts his play accordingly, but also creates his own versions through his unique interpretations. These alterations appear reflected in the play’s sequence of events, the characters’ actions, and the merging of the faerie and human realms. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

EHEDG - Wegweiser zu Kosteneinsparungen durch Hygienic Design

Lorenzen, Knuth 09 April 2015 (has links) (PDF)

Zuverlässigkeit 3D-integrierter Chips: Die Rolle metallischer Oberflächen und Grenzflächen / Reliability of 3D-integrated chips: The role of metallic surfaces and interfaces

Zschech, Ehrenfried 27 March 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Abstract des Vortrages: The reliability-limiting effects in 3D IC structures using TSVs including mechanical stress distributions and the resulting effects on material integrity (e.g. failure modes like interface delamination, cohesive cracking, metallurgical degradation at joints, and chip-package interaction) and finally on device performance degradation are challenges in advanced 3D integration technologies and product development. Managing internal mechanical stress is a key task to ensure high reliability of products manufactured in advanced CMOS technology nodes, and it is a highly ranked concern for 3D TSV technologies. It requires the determination of materials properties, including Young’s modulus, Poisson ratio and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), for each material used. For polycrystalline materials, their microstructure has to be considered. In this talk, one reliability-limiting effect, interface delamination and so-called “pop-up” of copper TSV structures will be addressed. Shear stress along the Cu/Si interface and adhesion of the interfaces in a complex stack (Si/liner/barrier/seed/Cu) are parameters that have to be considered. Metal barrier and seed films and the respective surfaces will be discussed in the context of interface strength. Nano X-ray tomography is currently the only analytical technique to study the so-called “pop-up” effect quantitatively, without modifying the region of interest.
