Broken Solidarity: The Refugees Welcome Movement in Sweden 2015-2020Mäkelä, Fanny January 2020 (has links)
This qualitative inquiry explores and describes the Refugees Welcome movement in Sweden from 2015 to 2020 by exploring how people became volunteers, their motivation and experience while at the same time describing events, sceneries, and context with the help of their stories. The empirical material consists of 25 interviews with 20 interviewees, the theoretical perspectives come from the fields of volunteering, civil society, and social movements. A thematic analysis is the method used and the results are presented as part 1 Refugees Welcome to Malmö during the refugee crisis in the fall of 2015, and part 2 with the post-2015 Refugees Welcome initiatives separated by the establishment of checkpoints. The volunteers paint a picture of civil society handling an international issue in a globalized world, and what happens when that globalized world closes. The conclusion is that when the states of Europe introduced checkpoints it drastically changed the context of the opportunities to help refugees, cutting off networks of solidarity from the Mediterranean Sea to Malmö Central Station, and when the local authorities took over the responsibility for the refugee reception they cut off civil society and killing the engagement of the volunteers.

Effects of Interracial Contact on University Students' Perceptions of InclusionAbellera, Cierra 01 September 2021 (has links)
Research from higher education and social psychology has recognized feelings of belonging and perceptions of inclusion as important factors within the university student experience. Yet little research has examined the extent to which interracial contact may correspond with belonging and inclusion in the university setting. In the present study, I conduct secondary analyses of a 2016 campus climate survey of undergraduate students to examine the associations between interracial contact and three indicators of belonging and inclusion (e.g., feeling a sense of belonging, perceiving the campus to be welcoming, perceived university commitment to inclusion) among undergraduate students from different racial and ethnic backgrounds, and among racial and ethnic minority students (ALANA students) regarded as international students and as U.S. residents. Results indicate, overall, White students tend to report greater feelings of belonging and perceptions of inclusions compared to their ALANA peers. Greater interracial contact was generally associated with greater feelings of belonging and greater perceived institutional commitment to inclusion, yet these effects tended to be stronger among ALANA students than among White students. Black students tended to report lower feelings of belonging in comparison to other ALANA students; at the same time, no significant interactions were observed between interracial contact and racial/ethnic status among ALANA students from Asian, Black, Latino/a, or multiracial backgrounds. In addition, international ALANA students tended to report lower levels of belonging as compared to ALANA students regarded as U.S. residents. However, there were no significant interaction effects of interracial contact and international ALANA status in predicting students’ feelings of belonging and inclusion perceptions. The present study highlights how students’ racial/ethnic status can shape belonging and inclusion perceptions on the university campus, and how associations between interracial contact and key indicators of inclusion may vary among students whose racial and ethnic groups occupy different status positions in U.S. society.

[pt] O DIREITO DE MORAR NO REFÚGIO - A PROBLEMÁTICA DA MORADIA DO REFUGIADO NA CIDADE DE SÃO PAULO: SAÍDAS INDIVIDUAIS OU COLETIVAS? / [en] THE RIGHT TO LIVE IN THE REFUGE - THE REFUGEE PROBLEM DWELLING IN THE CITY OF SÃO PAULO: INDIVIDUAL OR COLLECTIVE SOLUTIONS?LIVIA RIBEIRO VIANA 01 December 2016 (has links)
[en] The goal of this dissertation is to understand the confrontation of refugees in Sao Paulo s city in which relates to access to housing. Starting from the experiences that occurred in Sao Paulo for the effort of welcome for refugees of different nationalities, housing have not been a matter of public policy yet, with gaps for the guarantee of access. For this, it is necessary to identify the refugee s experiences in individual and collective models. Four interviews were carried out in the Reception centers and halfway house located in São Paulo and three interviews with two individuals with refugee status and a son of a Palestinian couple who articulates the residences in an occupation in the city center. It was possible to identify the limits and possibilities of the host services by the interviews. The individual searches and the mobilization network of solidarity built among the refugees make up the difficulty setting of the right to housing, marked by a forced displacement occurred in the migration process.

In the Company of Ghosts : Hauntology, Ethics, Digital Monsters / I sällskap av spöken : Hauntologi, etik, digitala monsterHenriksen, Line January 2016 (has links)
This thesis explores French philosopher Jacques Derrida’s ’hauntology’ through the lens of digital monsters and feminist theory. Hauntology – a pun on ‘ontology’ and ‘haunting’ – offers an ethics based on responsibility towards that which cannot be said to fully exist, yet has an effect on our everyday lives nonetheless. Like the figure of the ghost, such undecidable existences are neither absent nor present, here nor gone, of the past or the future. In other words: they haunt. By engaging with hauntology through contemporary stories of digital monsters – such as The Curious Case of Smile.jpg, Welcome to Night Vale and Mushroom Land TV - the thesis discusses how such troubling hauntings might be imagined, and what it means to think an ethics based on responsibility towards the undecidable. In this way, the thesis brings together hauntology and digital media, arguing that thinking with and through the figure of the ghost as well as the digital monster may lead to different and critical ways of imagining both the world and ethics. In short, drawing upon feminist theory and creative writing, the thesis maps out a relational ethics of hauntings and internet story-telling.

Civilengagemang i sociala medier : En studie av Refugees Welcome to Gothenburgs mediering och medialisering / Civic Engagement on Social Media : A study of Refugees Welcome to Gothenburg’s mediation and mediatizationAlsbjer, Annelie, Sjöberg, Linn January 2016 (has links)
This study has examined the mediatization of the social movement Refugees Welcome to Gothenburg. By identifying social practices at a meso level within Refugees Welcome to Gothenburg, mediation processes have been found. The analysis at a macro level (in relation with the society) have then led to the understanding of the mediation processes. The material selection has been made on social media and on the website of Refugees Welcome to Gothenburg. The analysis is based on a conceptual framework by Alice Mattoni and Emiliano Treré (2014), combined with mediatization theories, and more specifically, the four processes of social change within mediatization by Winfried Schulz (2004) together with the media logics in social media by José van Dijck and Thomas Poell (2013). A qualitative text analysis was used in order to study the material. The analysis was performed at two levels, firstly, at a meso level to identify the social practices and the mediation processes, and secondly, at a macro level to find the mediatization of Refugees Welcome to Gothenburg. The results showed that Refugees Welcome to Gothenburg has a strong mediatization, but at the same time, not completely. Some social practices have not been mediated. The non-mediated social practices, however, have shown an amalgamation (joining) with the mediated social practices. Finally, the essay has also shown that social movements should be studied from a media perspective even further, to be able to understand functions and changes within them.

Previous issue date: 2011-03-16 / This dissertation is based on the worldwide evident withdrawal of the youths from the catholic churches. The new structures and the unquestionable realities of the post-modern world, mainly the multitechnological world, demand a review of their pastoral regarding the youths, forsaking archaic structures while searching for the new evangelical. First we need to know the world of the youths, their aspirations, dreams and difficulties to reach their goals in life. The youths are innately full of emotions, open-minded and long for comradeship. Here is where religions in general have the mission to make them discover the shining path of the soul. Based on experts who have studied this crisis and supported by researches carried out in a parish of the Dominican Republic as a sample, we propose a brotherly welcome and a subsequent follow-up programme for the youths as a possible solution for this impasse. The awareness of their constituting elements and the deep study of their aggregative psychology can help the youths to ponder upon their dignity as sons of God / Esta dissertação é inspirada na constatação do universal afastamento da juventude das igrejas católicas.

Reality & Effect: A Cultural History of Visual EffectsRyu, Jae Hyung 03 May 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to chart how the development of visual effects has changed popular cinema¡¯s vision of the real, producing the powerful reality effect. My investigation of the history of visual effects studies not only the industrial and economic context of visual effects, but also the aesthetic characteristics of the reality effect. In terms of methodology, this study employs a theoretical discourse which compares the parallels between visual effects and the discourse of modernity/postmodernity, utilizing close textual analysis to understand the symptomatic meanings of key texts. The transition in the techniques and meanings of creating visual effects reflects the cultural transformation from modernism to postmodernism. Visual effects have developed by adapting to the structural transformation of production systems and with the advance of technology. The studio system strongly controlled the classical Hollywood cinema by means of the modern economic production system of Fordism. Breakdown of Hollywood classicism as a production system gave rise to the creation of digital effects with the rise of the concept of the blockbuster and with the development of computer technologies. I argue that the characteristic feature of time-space compression, occurring in the process of the transition from Fordism to flexible accumulation, clearly reflects that of compression of multi-layered time and space, generated in the development process from analog visual effects, such as trick, rear and front projection, to the digital effects, such as rotoscoping and CGI animation. While the aesthetics of analog visual effects, without computing, can be compared to a Fordist production system, digital effects, which hugely rely on CGI manipulation, are examples of flexible accumulation. As a case study of the local resistance or alternative of Hollywood today, I examine the effects-oriented Korean nationalist blockbuster. The Korean nationalist blockbuster films have sought large-scale filmmaking and presentation of spectacular scenes, including heavy dependence on the use of special effects, which is frequently considered a Hollywood style. This paradoxical combination of peculiar Korean subjects and Hollywood style can be viewed as a form of cultural jujitsu, taking advantage of the force of the dominant culture in order to resist and subvert it.

Users of space perceive feelings of welcome or hostility since they can also carry with themselves the attribute of hospitality. To diagnose what causes such feelings may help in proposing solutions to adapt the environment so that they can minimize impacts on contemporary life, characterized by overcrowding in the cities, homogenization of habits and customs and emptying of personal and local identities. To promote the welfare of the person who uses certain space involves planning of every activity that takes place there, such as the study of routines, the specification and design of materials and equipment and the dissemination of good hygiene and maintenance practices, besides environment stewardship, in order to provide higher quality of life. To evaluate these functions and its form of occurrence, this study investigates in detail the process of qualification of spaces from the perspective of hospitality, whether they residential, commercial or social. It is also an exercise in applying concepts learned through the design of corporate positioning strategy, giving guidelines for the development and implantation of the activities of a company in the industry - the SPACE.
