This work aims to discuss the dropout and retention in the young people and adults education (EJA) of students from a Belo Horizonte public school. It also aims to analyze how school management can contribute to the identification of factors that lead to students dropout, and how school management can increase the index of permanence of EJA students. This is a case study of a school which offers EJA elementary school since 2002. This institution has searched for quality work in EJA. However, the dropout has been one of its main challenges. This study is justified by the school's specific need to realize how far it can influence to increase the index of students' permanence in the institution and what actions can be implemented in order for this to happen. Understanding how this problem occurs will help the school to propose actions and setting it's responsibility in reducing dropout. The theoretical basis is supported by the establishment of EJA as a public policy and by the need to define what constitutes quality in this type of education. The methodology used was the case study, with the following instruments: interviews, document analysis, literature research and participant observation. The data collected and its analysis according to the theoretical framework is the basis for the intervention plan. The plan was based, primarily, on management's performance for: mobilization and strengthening of the team work; reducing dropout and provide systematic means of communication in a work attentive to the students’ needs.

The present thesis has aimed to investigate possibilities of political subjectivation a tRedes de Jovens Vivendo com HIV/Aids (Networks of Young People Living with HIV/Aids) in Brazil and their (possible) constitution as a political subject. The research positions itself in front of a complex theoretical, methodological and conceptual field and assumes as epistemological orientation the production of Jacques Rancière about the dissensus dimension of politics. In the contemporary panorama of HIV/Aids, some paths that have become relevant in the history of the epidemic in the country are addressed, especially those focused on the youth living with the virus. In this sense, attention is focused on issues such as: processes involving the participation of organised civil society in HIV/Aids prevention policies; the institutional relations that constructed the logic of agreement and assimilation with the State; the valorisation of a technical rationality from the increment of new prevention technologies; and the position of youth and their cooperative articulation in these fields. In this study, the youth is understood as a field crossed by interventions, mainly in its relationship with the State, questioning logics of appropriation and a guarded protagonism. Against this background, Ethnography is taken as a methodological design, using participant observation, field diary and (in)formal conversations to access the reality of the Redes de Jovens Vivendo com HIV/Aids. It from the ethnographic field, five topics of analytical synthesis were unfolded: 1) Meetings, spaces and relationships; 2) About living and surviving with HIV/Aids and making/being Redes; 3) Institutions, agreements and Redes; 4) From social participation to political subjectivation; 5) Between ―being Rede‖, ―being young‖ and ―being a political subject‖. Such synthesis concentrates on the division between the regime of the police and the politics and the possibilities of rupture in the sensible order that opportune the political subjectivation. As a conclusion, the possible occurrence of Redes as a political subject is related to an inversion produced about its own existence. From this inversion provoked by actions of recognition of the dissent, or of naming a polemic, an interval occurs in the sensible ordering and the naturalised logics of the hierarchies in the political scenario of Aids. For the political subject is precisely in the condition of keeping ―in between‖, escaping from the logic that assimilates it as part of the standard process and neutralises its effects. Through the (de)identification, it is understood that it is in the knot between being young, being Redes and being a political subject, that it becomes possible to reinvent the modes of politics.

Comparative study on user's perception of privacy issues on Facebook : Young adults vs. adults in Sweden

Rodriguez, Juan Tomas, Obradovac, Irma January 2017 (has links)
Facebook is a social network that has more than 1.5 billion active members. With the term ‘active’ we mean users who sign in at least once every day on Facebook. Sharing personal information has become a popular activity within the development of all the social networks. Facebook, for instance, contains settings for privacy that allow the user to adjust how "far" the user wants to share his/her own personal information. The problem comes when this can lead to private issues and concerns. The aim of this research was to study the privacy issues perceptions of people within two different ranges of ages, under and over 35 years old. Firstly, we analysed how much people know about privacy on Facebook, and then we tried to understand if there are similarities or differences between those two groups. We thought it would be interesting to know the current state of this phenomena and there was no much research done in Sweden about it. The research was conducted using the mixed method because we wanted to get more global responses from a larger number of respondents in a survey and we wanted to get more detailed answers from an open questionnaire through interviews. We intended to know how is the general knowledge about privacy on Facebook among Swedes. The results showed that people who belonged to the adults group took slightly more care on their privacy than the young-adults group. Also, we discovered that, in general, people are more informed about the risks coming from privacy leaks than a few years ago.

Paradox of risk: sexuality and HIV/AIDS among young people with physical disabilities in Nyanga, South Africa

Wazakili, Margaret January 2007 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / The current study aimed to describe the paradox of risk through an exploration of the experiences and perceptions of sexuality and HIV/AIDS among physically disabled young people in Nyanga, South Africa. This is against the background that AIDS has become a national and global crisis, which requires all people to participate in efforts to contain the pandemic. Yet literature indicates that young people with disabilities are not participating in such efforts. There is also an assumption, that physically disabled young people do not experience challenges in expressing their sexuality and accessing HIV/AIDS prevention services, to the same extent as other disability groups such as the blind and those with intellectual disabilities. Hence there was a need to explore disabled young people’s own understanding of risk and the factors that hinder or support their participation in existing sexuality education and HIV/AIDS prevention programmes. It was also important for this group to suggest ways in which they may participate in such programmes. A qualitative case study design was chosen as the appropriate means for achieving the aim of the current study. This design allowed me to study disabled young people without separating them from their context. In this way, a comprehensive understanding of this group was realised. Multiple methods of data collection from multiple data sources were employed, a feature that helped to discuss the ‘case of disabled young people’ in-depth and breadth. Policy and programme documents and relevant literature were reviewed for relevant information on sexuality education and HIV/AIDS prevention services for disabled young people. Fifteen disabled young people between the ages of 15 and 24 participated in individual in-depth interviews and in focus group discussions. Pertinent issues that arose from individual interviews were discussed with 15 parents, 15 senior citizens, five sangomas and five counsellors in focus group discussions of 4-10 members each. Similar issues from focus group discussions were taken up with eight key informants in more individual in-depth interviews for confirmation and clarity. Textual and contextual features of the Atlas.ti computer programme for analysing qualitative data were used to organize and analyse data. The textual features were used to code data and write memos, while the contextual features were used to link the codes and to form networks from which categories and themes were generated. Themes and sub themes were used to answer the research questions and meet the objectives of the study. The study has revealed a complex interplay of contextual and individual factors that combine to create situations of risk for disabled young people. These factors affect disabled young people’s experiences of growing up and participation in existing sexuality education and HIV/AIDS prevention programmes. Contextual factors include cultural beliefs and poverty, while individual factors include sexual behaviour and attitude towards HIV risk. I found that disabled young people have limited access to education and other social amenities, which in turn affect their experiences of life in general and sexuality and HIV/AIDS. The study has revealed that the paradox of risk lies in the contradictory scripts and attitude towards the pandemic at contextual and individual levels. The belief that disabled young people are asexual is common in Nyanga, yet society targets this group for sexual exploitation and rape. In the face of an epidemic that has crippled the fabric of society, and in spite of the widespread availability of HIV/AIDS awareness programmes, most disabled young people still do not have accurate factual knowledge about HIV/AIDS. Yet accurate information is one of the prerequisites for making informed decisions about HIV/AIDS prevention. Furthermore, gender differences make the experiences described above more serious for disabled young women who suffer discrimination and sexual abuse even from fellow disabled young men. Although most disabled young people indicated that they are aware of the gravity of the pandemic and that they personally feel threatened, they are not taking preventive measures against contracting the infection; they have adopted a fatalistic response to risk. Participants argue that in the same way they are not able to protect themselves from going hungry, or living in shacks, they also cannot prevent getting infected with HIV, which they equate to any accident over which they have no control. Disabled young people expressed the need to participate in mainstream education systems, sexuality education and HIV/AIDS prevention programmes. They also pointed out that there will always be disabled young people who require separate programmes because of special disability circumstances such as inability to travel to clinics/centres. In order to meet disabled young people’s expressed wishes, I have recommended in this thesis, a community-based sexuality education and HIV/AIDS prevention programme that focuses on the whole community instead of individuals only so as to deal with contextual and individual factors of risk. Such a programme encourages dialogue and participation as opposed to the information giving approaches from experts. A guideline that existing HIV/AIDS intervention programmes can use to include disabled young people’s special circumstances, has been presented. / South Africa
