Young people in Benin and HIV prevention : what conceptions and what possible strategies ?

Akogbeto, Magloire 13 May 2016 (has links)
How the individual conceptions of young people can influence HIV prevention? That is the research question which this thesis is trying to answer. The aim of the research is to understand the reasons why young people do not translate knowledge on HIV into preventive practices.Data obtained by a survey of 17 young students from Benin were collected in individual interviews and analyzed by the method of the grounded theory. Results show a mismatch between individual conceptions of the young people and the knowledge on HIV. The young people have a self-centered conception and a magico-religious conception of the HIV prevention. They have an external locus of control which influences the prevention and gets them feeling powerless and sometimes invulnerable in front of the virus etc.The theory developed through the data analysis is the following one: individual conceptions of young people are based on social representations, experiences, practices, social and cultural context which influence the integration of the knowledge on HIV and train as a result barriers to implementing prevention devices against AIDS.Mainstreaming of the individual conceptions and social representations is therefore essential in the development of theoretical models of intervention and relevant prevention devices. An increase of the internal locus of control of young people through education focused on empowerment, a prevention oriented on risk reduction and the development of health literacy are strategies that may be relevant and adapted to the Beninese context.

Morozumi, Tatsuhei January 2017 (has links)
There is a growing concerns about reconstructing youth policy in many parts of the world in reflection to the issue on youth. Especially, in the post industrialized countries such as Sweden and Japan, young people's participation became one of the prioritized theme of national youth policy. Despite the implementation of youth policy and local practices in regards to youth participation in both of the countries, there is a clear difference in young people's notion and behavior in participation into society. The paper attempted to answer a question: what is the factor that shapes young people's different notion on participation? This qualitative study had investigated modern national youth policy documents in Sweden and Japan with focus on youth participation. Thematic contents analysis was employed as a methodology of this research in order to conduct comparative analysis. To grab context of youth participation in the respective countries, key concepts: youth participation and youth policy as well as historical development of youth policy in each countries were described. Analysis with self-organized framework found that the two countries shares several commonalities in youth policy such as rights perspectives, cross sectorial approach, social inclusion of risky young people and promotion of independence. However, policies in reality for participation of young people are implemented in differently, which reflects different recognition on youth participation in the contexts of the respective countries.

'Dumping grounds' or a meaningful educational experience? : the involvement of Scotland's colleges in the education of disengaged young people

Davidson, Janet Morton January 2007 (has links)
The research examines the discourses surrounding disengaged young people, particularly those under the age of 16, and the role of Scotland’s Colleges in making provision for them. Consideration is given to the voices of the young people themselves: how their college experiences compare to school and how they view themselves over this transition period. Consideration is also given to the policy in this area and how it has developed since the Beattie watershed of 1999. The debate surrounding the involvement of colleges in the provision of education for this group of young people touches on issues of social justice and the construction of children and young people, as well as throwing up questions about the roles and identity of Scotland’s schools and colleges. Among the questions it raises about colleges, it raises issues of pedagogy and of the professional status of its teaching staff and offers recommendations about the lessons each sector might learn from the other . Ultimately, it proposes that Scotland’s Colleges are uniquely placed to seek ascendancy in the post-school sector, welcoming and developing the role that they now play in the transition of young people to adulthood.

The development of the Youth Empowerment Scale

Grealish, Annmarie January 2014 (has links)
This study developed and validated the Youth Empowerment Scale (YES) for young people with psychosis. This PhD thesis consisted of four phases. Phase 1 conceptualised empowerment from the perspective of young people with psychosis. Phase 1 qualitative findings informed the development of the measurement of empowerment; the Youth empowerment Scale (YES). Phase 2 developed and validated the YES in a non-clinical population. Phase 3 explored the relationship between psychological processes (self-efficacy, control, coping, thinking style, and social support), empowerment, mental health wellbeing and recovery. The YES was then validated again in phase 4 on a clinical population, young people within Child and Adolescents Mental Health Services (CAMHS). This study confirmed that the YES is a valid and reliable measure of empowerment which can be used in future work identifying and supporting empowerment for young people with psychosis.

Education in the country was initiated by the Jesuits. The Salesians arrived in 1883 and brought to Brazil the preventive education system created by Don Bosco and whose foundations are the reason, religion and kindness. This education system aims to prevent young people destined to wrong paths, rather than waiting to punish them after erring. The first Salesian school in Brazil was inaugurated in 1883 in the city of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. In 1895 was founded the Colégio Salesiano do Sagrado Coração. Even today with the crisis of values and the culture of death, the Salesian school maintains educational principles of Don Bosco. It inserts his students in the ecclesial community through Religious Education, which covers the various religions present in our society, the Catechesis that promotes youth evangelism and pastoral, that make the young multipliers Don Bosco s philosophy, forming good citizens from good Christians. The preventive system of Don Bosco remains an effective educational method but must be always updated, because nowadays just protect young people is not enough, we must teach them how to be protagonists of their lives with responsibility and Christian values to build a world most fair and equitable.

To turn viable this research, it was used a methodology that consists of the bibliographical research of Marià Corbí and several authors of the Brazilian religious field and in the research of field with the application of a mixed questionnaire of 10 subjects to a sample chosen of 756 students at the age group of 15 to 20 years, declared " without religion ", in the Public State Schools and the Peculiar ones of Boa Vista. In Roraima it is verified that the phenomenon of the "without religion" already occupies the third place in the classification of the religions in the State and that most of the declared "without religion" don't have entail with the Church, religious institution, but they believe in God. It is a group composed of several religious credos and, in small number, they identified the atheistic and agnostic individuals' presence. It is sensed, that the youths "without religion" of Roraima following the same characteristics of the without religion of the other Brazilian states. They are looking for the experience of a spirituality out of the religious institution, but not in the model without faith, without myth speculated in Mariá Corbí 2010, that it believes in a spirituality without religion, cultivated by the road of the silent knowledge.

Its background is Hannah Arendt’s concept of natality. This research is of a phenomenological, qualitative and interventive nature, which parts from the young people’s narrative to understand their experiences. The analysis of the narratives revealed that some fundamental conditions for the young people to begin something new were co-authorship and an educational formation which made it possible for them to be marked by and presented to the world in a different way. The narratives revealed the importance of the institution Home as coauthor in the history of these young people. Last but not least, the narrators offer trails about the experiences they made in the institution and which were decisive for them to turn into the people they are now: the presence of professionals who do not only commit themselves to the people sheltered, but also to their families; the respect and consideration for the individual needs of every sheltered person and family member; the importance of the presence of confiding looks opposed to judgmental and punishing looks; the relevance of the substitution of constant dialogue in the place of violence and punishment, and, finally, the certainty that all adults involved in the care of the sheltered are co-authors of their story. This co-authorship makes new ways of relationships with others, with the world and with oneself possible.

: En kvalitativ studie om yrkesverksammas erfarenheter och tankar om insatser mot psykisk ohälsa / What is being done to prevent mental ill-health in young people?

Björk, Matilda, Björklund, Anna January 2020 (has links)
The mental ill-health of young people is a growing problem, which is something that must be stopped. The aim of this study was to show the perceptions and experiences of professionals about treatment against mental ill-health for young people. We conducted a qualitative study in which we interviewed six professionals who work with young people in different contexts in the community. The collected data has been analyzed with a thematic analysis. The results of this study showed that professionals work very much in their daily work with preventative efforts. There is short of research on the subject, especially evidencebased. The study's results showed that mental ill-health is a problem that is partly a consequence of the changing society we live in today. Our opinion is that more research is needed on the subject and more working methods that professionals can use.
