Leisure and pleasure as modernist utopian ideal : the drawings and paintings by B.C. Binning from the mid 1940s to the early 1950s

Yamanaka, Kaori 05 1900 (has links)
Bertram Charles Binning's depiction of British Columbia coastal scenes in his drawings and paintings of the mid 1940s to the early 1950s present images of sunlit seascapes in recreational settings; they are scenes of leisure and pleasure. The concern for leisure and pleasure was central to the artist's modernism, even after he began painting in a semi-abstract manner around 1948. In this particular construction of modernism, Binning offered pleasure as an antidote to some of the anxieties he observed in postwar culture. Binning also thought that art could contribute to life in a direct way. In the mid to late 1940s, Vancouver saw a series of artistic community projects which explored the possibility of art as a social force; the Art in Living Group, of which Binning was a member, believed that art could have a therapeutic value in relation to housing projects and community planning. In certain ways, the Art in Living Group was a response to rapid changes in the social matrix of Vancouver. Binning's personal artistic practice, however, appears to have existed outside of what was embraced in his participation in those community projects. His essentially personal, self-authenticating expression in the form of drawings may be seen to resist the idealism of his more 'public' production, that is, his own idealism, his demand for an art thoroughly harmonized with the public sphere. Moreover, in this more personal body of work, his choice of leisurely scenes, rendered in a style reminiscent of Matisse, can be seen as far removed from the urban tensions of the time. It also seems to suggest that the leisure-and-pleasure idealism which finds expression in these works was not only class-and gender- specific, but also antithetical to his strong desire to democratize art. Binning's preoccupation with personal expression took a turn when he shifted his concern from representational drawings to semi-abstract paintings. The shift coincided with his career move to the University of British Columbia as a professor of Art History in 1949. From then on, Binning's interest in regional cosmopolitanism became more pronounced in his work. In this sense, it is significant that Binning looked for guidance to Herbert Read's ideas about modern art and art education. At the same time, his reputation expanded beyond the West Coast. In 1954, Binning was chosen to represent Canada at the Venice Biennale. Binning's particular modernism, as represented by this range of work, all of which presents a pastoral version of Utopia , was in some ways profoundly at odds with the social circumstances of the time. Why was the interest in leisure and pleasure significant to his practice? What did it mean to promote this kind of idealism in the local context? And in what ways did it relate to the international art scene — for example, to the work of Matisse or to contemporary concepts of art? My thesis addresses these questions by situating Binning's work both regionally and internationally. / Arts, Faculty of / Art History, Visual Art and Theory, Department of / Graduate

The use of natural areas in Pindamonhangaba: comparative study

Edésio da Silva Santos 28 March 2008 (has links)
The preservation of the socio environmental heritage represented by the material, cultural and ethical aspects in society, is an attitude that must be cultivated in man since his early age. This work aims at making a review of the importance of the environmental issues related to leisure and tourism in natural environments in the municipality of Pindamonhangaba, by characterizing the nature of these activities, verifying its impacts and identifying possible actions that could lead to a better management in these areas. This research uses comparative methods from statistical data and official documentation focusing on the characterization of activities deriving from leisure and tourism, in the municipality of Pindamonhangaba, Brazil. Taking as a case study the existing natural areas for public use, the paper discusses how these sites could be managed in a appropriate way, as to promote them as a public space for the population and a resource for environmental education and enjoyment, a source of recreational and cultural activities geared to all its population.

Social Class Position, Familism, and Family Leisure-Time Involvement: An Exploration

Jorgenson, David E. 12 1900 (has links)
The literature revealed a neglect in the area of family leisure-time behavior. The problem under consideration in this investigation was leisure-time behavior among fathers with members of the immediate family. Forty five fathers were selected for this study. Fifteen fathers represented each of three social class positions as defined by the Hollingshead two-factor index of education and occupation. All fathers had to be presently married and living at the same residence with spouse and children. There had to be two or three children in the family, and they had to be within the age range of six to thirteen. Finally, all fathers were of the caucasian race. The findings supported the hypotheses relative to social class position and time and types variations. With one exception, there was a positive association between social class position and every aspect of father family leisure time when both time and types variations were considered. There was no association between social class position and the amount of leisure time a husband and wife spent together. The findings did not support the hypotheses relative to the association between familism and time and types variation of family leisure time. In most instances there was an inverse association between familism and time variation and between familism and types variation. Finally, there was an inverse association between social class position and familism. Although the results of this investigation cannot be applied to a general population due to the methodological limitations, the findings do show that social class position does predict the behavior of fathers relative to leisure-time use with family members. The results also show that familism as defined and measured for this investigation is limited in its applicability. It is suggested that future research include a probability sampling procedure so that inference can be drawn applicable to a larger population, and mothers as well as fathers be included in the investigation.

Al-Shamaa, Mohammad January 2020 (has links)
This is a scholarly essay in which I examine and reflect on issues related to collaborationbetween teachers and parents and also inclusion of students with special needs. In the firstpart of the essay a story is presented that describes the problems followed by a lack ofconsensus between parents and school regarding a student with special needs. In which waycan a good collaboration between teachers and parents be promoted? I have used the“partnership model” and the “Overlapping Spheres of Influence”-theory to problematize andreflect on collaboration between teachers and parents. Are we as teachers able to changeparental attitudes? Or should we as teaches try to reach a deeper comprehension about whyparents have different attitudes towards the school? In this essay I will also introduce different perspectives within the special education field andalso the meaning of inclusion and including pedagogy. What does it mean that school shouldbe for everyone? In which way can I as a leisure-time teacher make sure that all students areinvolved regardless of their needs? These issues are problematized and discussed not onlyfrom my perspective but also from students and teachers perspectives.

Marcusson, Tobias January 2020 (has links)
This paper has it´s starting point in the leisure teacher's profession and deals with the reality many leisure teachers find themselves in, and what qualities the leisure teacher needs to perform the profession in the best way. What is the leisure teacher's assignment and how hasthe leisure teacher's profession looked historically are other parts that I also discuss in this exam. This exam is written in essay form. The text is based on my self-perceived dilemma "the story" where I portray my dilemma, which then results in the question that becomes thebackbone of this exam. This question then results in discussions based on my own thoughts, which are discussed with the help of control documents and other relevant literature. Other literature dealing with the history and assignments of the leisure center, such as Ann S Philgren's books Fritidshemmet and Fritidshemmets didactics and more. But also books dealing with practical knowledge, Alsterdal and Pröckl's book, from Within and from outside but also Bornemark and Svenaeus book, what is Practical knowledge and others. The importance of the play will also be discussed, and Öhman's book The most important thing is to play will have a big role together, with for example, Good learning environments for children by Kragh-Müller, Orstedt Andersen and Veje Hvidtved. The text will also include general advice for leisure centers. The issues that this exam come to address are partly how the leisure teacher assignment changed from a historical perspective, what does it look like today and what has it looked like in the past? also what changes have taken place when it comes to the professional role and how has this affected the pedagogical work at the leisure center? But also what skills a leisure teacher needs to carry out his/her work in the best way In other words, this text makes visible the leisure center and it´s profession with the aim of strengthening the importance of the leisure centers in the school world.

Structured in three indicators (age, education, leisure), the study problematizes the meaning and perception of elderly about themselves; non-formal educational opportunities within leisure experiences and the ressonances of pro-active attitudes in their leisure time with respect to predisposition to new learning. For this, a literature review was associated to a survey developed by a questionnaire with twenty-four open questions and applied to a random sample of fifty participants of Rio Claro community, ages over sixty years, of both genders, different nationalities, professions and levels of schooling. Data analyses made by Content Analysis Technique have elected five sub-indicators - biological, psychological, sociocultural, philosophical and pedagogical. Among the results on Aging and its developments, this study found the existence of a favorable predisposition linked to positive perceptions of this phase of life, showing a reframing of the social image of the elderly, often associated with the inexorable and untransferred losses that this phase leads to be alive. The intervention of Education, in preparation for the massively successful aging was exalted by the participants, provided by the eternal, active and reflective learners of this process of change. There was a perception that all non-formal educational experiences can be seen as vehicle and object of education as a basis for learning to learn, to know, to be, and to live, attributes related to autonomy, discernment and personal responsibility... Zdravý životní styl v České republice / A Healthy life style in Czech Republic

Buriánková, Jitka January 2019 (has links)
This work gives an elementary insight into the issue of healthy lifestyles in terms of different perspectives, and so in this respect, we can follow up on Cockerham's study (2005), which offers a comprehensive paradigm of exploring a healthy lifestyle. The key issue lies in the debate on whether the choice of a healthy lifestyle is subject to structural influences or to individuals' choices (the classical problem of structure and behavior). The main aim of this work is to verify the determination of individual components of a healthy lifestyle. Due to the difficulty of finding one indicator, we examine separately the conditionality of healthy eating, smoking, drinking, sports. In the analysis of individual dimensions of a healthy lifestyle, we take into account not only the basic socio-demographic variables, but also the knowledge, attitude, well-being and compensation strategy as mediating factors of a healthy lifestyle. Enriching the analysis offers the inclusion of compensatory theory, because these strategies weaken the rationality of action. Compensation strategies play an important role in risky behavior. In this, our knowledge in the Czech environment is unique. The hypotheses are verified on a representative set of research "Aktér 2013" (N = 1088), carried out by STEM, which included...

Strengthening Couple's Relationships with Nature Recreation

Sumner, Brock W. 10 June 2020 (has links)
Nature has been shown to be beneficial for numerous individual outcomes and this article investigates the link between of individual's nature recreation and couples' relationship satisfaction. First, we outline the theoretical underpinnings of nature recreation and couples' relationship satisfaction. Then we examine the following hypotheses: (1) nature recreation has a positive direct effect on relationship satisfaction, (2) there is a positive indirect effect of nature recreation on relationship satisfaction through the environmental effects, and (3) the relationship between nature recreation and relationship satisfaction will be moderated by the recreational factors. These were examined using data obtained from a cross sectional MTurk survey from a diverse group of 520 participants. Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyze the hypotheses. The results showed that the hypotheses 2 and 3 were non-significant but that the indirect effect was significant. These findings were explored, possible explanations for these findings discussed, and future implications were outlined.

Litteratur för alla på lika villkor? : Om samverkan mellan fritidshemmet och skolbibliotek / Literature for everyone on equal terms? : A qualitative study based on interviews with a school librarian and an educator in a leisure center

Hanell, Liv January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of the study has been to investigate the collaboration between the leisure center and the school library and what obstacles and opportunities there are. In my dissertation, I have interviewed a school librarian and a leisure educator to find out how they work with literature in school and what obstacles and opportunities they believe there are to increase collaboration between school and school library. I have also used previous research that shows the effects of reading for children at an early age and current studies that show the negative effects that come from the use of school libraries to an increasing extent in Sweden. The results of the study have shown that reading from an early age has a great impact on children's schooling and their opportunities to acquire information and knowledge throughout their lives. The school can make a big difference for the students by offering a large selection of literature and adapting the reading so that all students have the opportunity to read on their own terms. By having a school library with trained staff, students get the best conditions for qualitative and rewarding reading.

We are all a little special”- leisuretime center teachers problemrepresentations on inclusion and special needs

Smith Ruther, Matilda, Törnfeldt, Niki January 2021 (has links)
