Physiological Reactions To Uncanny Stimuli: Substantiation Of Self-assessment And Individual Perception

There is abundant anecdotal evidence substantiating Mori’s initial observation of the "uncanny valley", a point at which human response to non-human entities drops sharply with respect to comfort (Mori, 1970), and the construct itself has a long-standing history in both Robotics and Psychology. Currently, many fields such as design, training, entertainment, and education make use of heuristic approaches to accommodate the anticipated needs of the user/consumer/audience in certain important aspects. This is due to the lack of empirical substantiation or, in some cases, the impossibility of rigorous quantification; one such area is with respect to the user’s experience of uncanniness, a feeling of "eeriness" or "wrongness" when interacting with artefacts or environments. Uncanniness, however, continues to be defined and measured in a largely subjective way, and often after the fact; an experience or product’s uncanny features are pointed out after the item has been markedly avoided or complained about by the general public. These studies are among the first seeking to determine a constellation of personality traits and physiological responses that incline the user to have a more frequent or profound "uncanny" reaction when presented with stimuli meeting the criteria for a level of "eeriness". In study 1, 395 adults were asked to categorize 200 images as uncanny, neutral, pleasant, or other. In Study 2, physiological and eye-tracking data was collected from twenty two adults as they viewed uncanny, neutral and pleasant images culled from study 1. This research identifies components of the uncanny valley related to subjective assessment, personality factors (using the HEXACO and Anthropomorphic Tendencies Scale), and biophysical measures, and found that traits unique to Emotionality on the HEXACO inventory, compounded with a form of anthropomorphism demonstrates a level of relationship to the subjective experience of uncanny stimuli. There is evidence that HEXACO type and forms of anthropomorphic perception mediates the biophysical iv expression and the subjective perception of the stimuli. In keeping with psychological hypotheses, stimuli to which the participants had greatest response centered on death, the threat of death, or mismatched/absent facial features.

The work is based on the theoretical and empirical analyses of the correlation between the social intelligence and the accentuation of personality traits made by Russian and foreign researchers. The scientific work has ongoing practical importance for the adolescence issue studies in order to form the personality of a teenager and build a solid capacity to show relevant reactions to the multitude of the influential factors (internal and external) that lead to successful adaptation and socialization in the community. There were examined models and indices of the social intelligence (social flexibility, empathy, assertion, self-control and etc.) and were illuminated the classification types of the accentuation and specification of personality traits. 74 schoolchildren (42 girls and 32 boys) at the age of 13-14 were tested using the M. O'Sullivan and J. P. Guilford Social Intelligence Test (adapted by E.S. Mihailova) and by the modify questionary on the accentuation types of personality traits in adolescents (modification of the diagnostician psychopathy questionary by A.Y. Lichko). For the statistical analysis were used t-distribution, Kruskal–Wallis one-way analysis of variance, chi-squared distribution. The types of accentuations were examine, having in mind the social intelligence development level, in the mixed group of the teenagers as well as in groups divided by sex. The outcomes of the research can be used as a framework for psycho-social capacity-building projects, disorder treatment programs, and as an informational source to form the recommendations for the teachers and parents in order to reduce number of conflicts and minimize their effects in the school and families of the teenagers. / В исследовании проведен анализ теоретических и эмпирических исследований по проблеме взаимосвязи социального интеллекта и акцентуации характера по данным зарубежных и отечественных источников. Обоснована актуальность и практическая значимость данной проблемы для подросткового возраста как значимого для формирования личности в условиях влияния на подростка множества факторов (внешних и внутренних) когда необходимо научиться адекватно выстраивать свое поведение с учетом этих факторов с целью успешной социализации и адаптации в обществе. Рассмотрены модели и индикаторы социального интеллекта социальная пластичность, эмпатия, самооценка, саморегуляция и т.д.), а также существующие классификации акцентуаций характера. и присущие разным типам поведенческие особенности. Приведены результаты исследования подростков 13-14 лет (74 учащихся, из них – 42 девочки, 32 мальчика) по методикам социального интеллекта Дж. Гилфорда и М. Салливана (адаптация Е. С. Михайловой) и модифицированного опросника идентификации типов акцентуации характера у подростков (модификация патохарактерологического диагностического опросника А. Е. Личко). Для статистической обработки данных использовались t – критерий Стьюдента, критерий Краскела-Уоллеса, Хи-квадрат Пирсона. Проанализированы типы акцентуаций с точки зрения уровня выраженности социального интеллекта в группе подростков в целом, а также отдельно в группах девочек и мальчиков. Полученные данные могут служить основой для разработки программ социально-психологического тренинга, коррекционной программы, а также рекомендаций учителям и родителям с целью минимизировать конфликты и их последствия в школе и семьях подростков.

Объектом исследования явились личностные особенности: склонность к риску и ответственность. Предметом исследования стала связь ответственности и склонности к риску у студентов-психологов. Магистерская диссертация состоит из введения, двух глав, заключения, списка литературы (64 источника) и приложения, включающего в себя описание и бланки применявшихся методик, а также описательную статистику по получившимся результатам. Объем магистерской диссертации 92 страницы, на которых размещены 1 рисунок и 28 таблиц. Во введении раскрывается актуальность проблемы исследования, разработанность проблематики, ставятся цель и задачи исследования, определяются объект и предмет исследования, формулируются гипотезы, указываются методы и эмпирическая база, а также научная новизна исследования. Первая глава включает в себя обзор научных данных по теме ответственности и риска, определения на которые опирались при построении теоретической части, основные характеристики, структуры. Так же идет описание использовавшихся методик, их семантический анализ, интерпретации. Выводы по первой главе представляют собой итоги по изучению теоретического материала. Вторая глава посвящена эмпирической части исследования. В ней представлено описание организации и методов проведенного исследования и результатов, полученных по всем использованным методикам: методика «Готовность к риску» Шуберта, «Самооценка склонности к экстремально-рискованному поведению» М. Цуккермана, тест «Ответственный ли Вы человек?» А. Мохнача, методика «Определение ответственности» М.Л.Осташевой, «Шкала социальной ответственности» Л. Берковица и К.Луттермана (по К. Муздыбаеву). Также в главе представлены таблицы проведенных корреляционных анализов результатов исследования. Выводы по главе 2 включают в себя основные результаты эмпирического исследования. В заключении в обобщенном виде изложены результаты теоретической и эмпирической частей работы, а также выводы по выдвинутым гипотезам, обоснована практическая значимость исследования и описаны возможные перспективы дальнейшей разработки данной проблематики. / The object of the study was personal characteristics: risk-taking and responsibility. The subject of the study was the relationship between responsibility and risk - taking in psychology students. The master's thesis consists of an introduction, two chapters, a conclusion, a list of references (64 sources) and an appendix that includes a description and forms of the methods used, as well as descriptive statistics on the results obtained. The volume of the master's thesis is 92 pages, which contain 1 figure and 28 tables. The introduction reveals the relevance of the research problem, the elaboration of the problematics, the goal and objectives of the research are set, the object and subject of the research are determined, hypotheses are formulated, the methods and empirical base, as well as the scientific novelty of the research, are indicated. The first chapter includes an overview of the scientific data on the topic of responsibility and risk, the definitions that were used in the construction of the theoretical part, the main characteristics, and structures. There is also a description of the methods used, their semantic analysis, and interpretation. Conclusions for the first chapter represent the results of the study of theoretical material. The second chapter is devoted to the empirical part of the study. It presents a description of the organization and methods of the study and the results obtained by all the methods used: the method "Risk readiness" by Schubert, "Self-assessment of the propensity to extreme risky behavior" by M. Zuckerman, the test "Are you a responsible person?" by A. Mokhnach, the method "Determination of responsibility" by M. L. Ostasheva, "The scale of social responsibility" by L. Berkowitz and K. Lutterman (according to K. Muzdybayev). The chapter also presents tables of the conducted correlation analyses of the results of the study. Conclusions from Chapter 2 include the main findings of the empirical study. In the conclusion, in a generalized form, the results of the theoretical and empirical parts of the work are presented, as well as conclusions on the hypotheses put forward, the practical significance of the study is substantiated and possible prospects for the further development of this problem are described.

Consumer Loyalty in Fast-Food Restaurants in Saudi Arabia

This study assesses the loyalty behaviour of consumers in fast-food restaurants in Saudi Arabia by studying the antecedents and the consequences of loyalty behaviour. The sample consisted of 231 Saudis and non-Saudis living in Saudi Arabia. They were approached using the “snowball” technique. Participants were all over the age of eighteen, and they were customers of Al-Baik restaurants. Data was collected through a face-to-face questionnaire, and analyzed using SPSS software. Specifically, Cronbach’s Alpha test, Pearson correlation coefficient, Spearman correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis were used. Results show that significant relationships exist between the antecedents and the consequences of loyalty behaviour. It is also indicated that participants’ personalities and values were significantly related to the loyalty behaviour of consumers in Saudi Arabia. The major limitation of this study is that it was conducted in only one city, Jeddah. Therefore, additional research should be carried out in other cities with larger samples. The research results offer compelling evidence that Saudi loyalty behaviour differs from Western behaviour. Therefore, it suggests that international fast-food operators in Saudi Arabia should take local factors into account when formulating marketing strategies, such as the role of women and youth in Saudi society. This thesis makes a novel contribution to the literature, as it is the first to model the antecedents and the consequences of loyalty behaviour of consumers in a single study. It is also the first to study contributed to the literature to examine the relation between the Six Dimensional Achievement Motivation Scale (Jackson, Ahmed, and Heapy, 1976), Rokeach Value System (1973), and loyalty behaviour of consumers.

The relationship between personality traits and employee engagement in a financial institution in South Africa

Text in English with abstracts in English, isiZulu and isiXhosa / The purpose of the current study was to determine the relationship between personality and employee engagement (EE) within a financial institution in South Africa. A quantitative correlational research approach was utilised and random sampling from a population of 516 identified 200 participants for whom personality scores as measured by the Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ32r) already existed as secondary data. A sample of 124 employees responded to the request to participate in the study. The participants were subsequently requested to complete a self-compiled biographical questionnaire and an employee engagement questionnaire (EEQ) as the measurement of EE. Reliability scores obtained in the current study for the OPQ32r was 0.95 and for the EEQ 0.97 (both p ≤ 0.5), indicating acceptable internal consistency. Results indicated a statistically significant relationship between an Overall OPQ32r Score and an Overall EE Score of 0.186 (p ≤ 0.5), but only one of the three core personality domains measured by the OPQ32r, namely feelings and emotions, had a statistically significant relationship with an Overall EE Score and four of the six EE subdimensions of EE. Results also indicated that the three core personality domains as measured by the OPQ32r are a statistically significant predictor of EE, predicting 4% of the variance of EE (r2 = 0.04, F (3; 120) = 2.72, p ≤ 0.05). Although all relationships obtained in the current study were statistically significant, all had a weak effect size and were thus of limited practical significance, indicating limited practical usefulness. The limitations of this study were the small sample size utilised (n = 124) due to the utilisation of secondary data and a survey sent out concurrent to this study, impacting employees’ willingness to fill in an additional survey. The fact that this study was done in only one division of a financial institution in South Africa, made the generalisation of results to other organisations problematic. There were limited studies measuring personality utilising the OPQ32r while the EE studies utilised different assessments to measure the construct, complicating the comparison of results.
