Sobre a multiplicidade de soluções positivas para uma classe de problemas elípticos de quarta-ordem via categoria de Lusternik-Schnirelman / On the multiplicity of positive solutions for a class of fourth-order elliptic problems by Lusternik-Schnirelman category

Jéssyca Lange Ferreira Melo 18 June 2014 (has links)
Introduzimos também uma noção de regiões crítica e não-crítica associadas a um de nossos problemas, a fim de garantir condições para existência de solução / In this work we study the existence and multiplicity of positive classical solutions for a class of fourth-order problems under Navier boundary condition, relating the number of solutions to the domain topology, more specifically, to its Lusternik-Schnirelman category. We also introduce the notion of critical and noncritical regions related to one of our problems, in order to ensure conditions to existence of solutions

Sobre a topologia das fibrações de Milnor / On the topology of the Milnor fibrations

Rafaella de Souza Martins 16 February 2018 (has links)
In this thesis two types of problems related to the famous Milnor Fibration Theorem and Milnor-Lê Fibration Theorem for the real case with non-isolated critical values will be addressed. Primarily, we assure the fibrations of type Milnor-Lê for the germ F : (X, 0) → (Y, 0) subanalytic with X and Y subanalytic spaces on C \\ {0} a subanalytic connected curve in Y and over a smooth analytical subspace W ⊂ Y of dimension p, n &ge p ≥ 2, under some conditions. In particular, we show the existence of the fibrations about the discriminants of subanalytical map-germ, if this not been studied in the literature, usually the set of critical values are disregarded. Finalizing our analysis of this subanalytic category, we certify that there exist the fibrations of type Milnor-Lê to f : (X, 0) → (Rp, 0), with dimension of X greater than p ≥ 2, subanalytic and X subanalytic with non-isolated critical values, setting d -regularity. We address these problems using results of the rugose vector fields. In a second part, we present a new necessary and sufficient criterion to verify the important transversality property of a real map-germ f of class Cl, l ≥ 1. Using a recent developed tool, D-regularity, we verify conditions for the existence of the fibrations of map-germ Ψ F, X : (Cn, 0) → (C, 0) non holomorphic, given by Ψ (z, z̄) = Σnj=1 kjtjzj ajzb<sup<j, aj, bj ≥ 0 with aj = bj for at least one j and aj ≠ bj for at leeast one j = 1, ..., n. We note that Ψ F, X are mixed weighted homogeneous polynomials with R+-action. We consider ΨF, X : (R2n, 0) → (R2, 0) real analytic map-germ. We studied the topology of these fibrations, noting that the discriminant has dimension 1 and therefore has both the fibrations known. Lastly we show a homeomorphism between the fibers of the regular values and the critical values for a case special this family.

Semantic categorization of body parts among English and Russian monolinguals and bilinguals

Luzhkova, Elena January 2016 (has links)
Semantic typology and categorization are important fields of research in linguistics. The aim of our work is to inspect these fields in regard to bilingualism. In this thesis we examine semantic categorization of body parts among four different groups of people: monolingual English speakers, monolingual Russian speakers, bilingual Russian speakers answering in English and bilingual Russian speakers answering in Russian. The hierarchies, ambiguities in naming patterns and homology were in the center of this study. The groups were also compared to each other in order to observe the effects of the first language learned (L1) and the second language learned (L2) on bilinguals. The results showed that Russian L1 bilinguals answering the Russian questionnaire displayed the same results as the Russian monolinguals, indicating a lack of influence from the L2. The Russian L1 bilinguals answering the English questionnaire used a semantic categorization most similar to their L1 and also demonstrated a broadening of the semantic categories related to neither the L1 nor the L2.

Une description fonctorielle des K-théories de Morava des 2-groupes abéliens élémentaires / A functorial description of the Morava K-theories of elementary abelian 2-groups

Nguyen, Le Chi Quyet 07 July 2017 (has links)
The aim of this PhD thesis is to study, from a functorial point of view, the mod 2 Morava K-theories of elementary abelian 2-groups. Namely, we study the covariant functors $V \mapsto K(n)^*(BV^{\sharp})$ for the prime p=2 and n a positive integer. The case n=1, which follows directly from the work of Atiyah on topological K-theory, gives us a coanalytic functor which contains no non-constant polynomial sub-functor. This is very different from the case n>1, where the above-mentioned functors are analytic. The theory of Henn-Lannes-Schwartz provides a correspondence between analytic functors and unstable modules over the Steenrod algebra. We determine the unstable module corresponding to the analytic functor $V \mapsto K(2)^*(BV^{\sharp})$, by studying the relation between this functor and the Hopf ring structure of the homology of the omega-spectrum associated to the theory K(2).

Aspiration in Japanese Speakers' English : A study of the acquisition of new phonetic categories in a second language

Ekelund, Martin January 2011 (has links)
This study aims to explore if it is possible to form separate categories of aspirated voiceless stops in a second language, distinct from the equivalent categories in the native language, for native speakers of a language with an intermediate degree of aspiration, and if such category formation is eased by long-term exposure to another language in which aspirated voiceless stops exist. Two groups of adult native Japanese speakers who had lived in Sweden for a long and short time respectively were recorded when reading a list of sentences containing word-initial, utterance-medial /p t k/ in Japanese and English. Both groups produced higher VOT values for the English stops than for the Japanese stops. The results were significant for /t/ and /k/ and for the long-term residents' /p/, but not for the short-term residents' /p/, presumably because of a low number of tokens. The results are nevertheless interpreted as evident of the possibility of phonetic category formation even though there is only a small difference from the corresponding category in the native language. Since both groups had established new phonetic categories, degree of exposure to Swedish is interpreted as likely not to be a relevant factor.

Semi-anneau de fusion des groupes quantiques / Fusion semiring of quantum groups

Mrozinski, Colin 05 December 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to classify quantum groups according to invariants coming from their representation theory. More precisely, we classify Hopf algebras having a fusion semiring isomorphic to that of a given reductive algebraic group G. Such a quantum group is called a G-deformation. We study the case of GL(2) and SO(3). We give a complete classification of GL(2)-deformations by building a family of Hopf algebras parametrized by invertible matrices. We describe their comodule category and we give some classification results about the Hopf-Galois objects. We also classify compact SO(3)-deformations and we study the noncompact case. Finally, the last part of this dissertation is a study of the underlying algebra of some Hopf algebras, for which we exhibit a linear basis. This basis allows us to compute the centre and some (co)homology groups of those algebras.

Employees’ perceptions towards workplace diversity in a financial institution operating in the Western Cape

Carelse, Kareemah January 2013 (has links)
Magister Commercii (Industrial Psychology) - MCom(IPS) / Although South Africa is 18 years into creating a unique diversity management strategy, individuals - directly affected by diversity in organisation will differ completely from those individuals that have not been affected by diversity in organisations at all. The subject of diversity management has become a contentious issue causing disagreement and argument is in the last couple of years. Many organisations find it difficult to grasp the concept of diversity, thus creating an opportunity for organisational development consultants and management to make substantial profit (Dombai & Verwey, 1999). In the current working environment and the continuous change of the organisation‟s employees, the workforce has become more diverse. This resulted in wider employee knowledge, skills, experience and attitude which will allow the organisation to become more competitive globally. It is of utmost importance for organisations attract and retain staff from different cultural and diverse group of order to improve the employee performance and the competitive advantage of the organisation (Ferreira & Coetzee, 2010). Cumming and Worley (2009, p. 506-509) postulate that “organisational transformation – and more specifically diversity management - is impacting on the bottom line results of the organisation”. Organisational transformation implies radical changes in how members perceive, think, and behave at work. They are concerned with fundamentality altering the prevailing assumptions about how the organisation function and relates to its environment. The study aimed at determining the employees‟ perception towards workplace diversity in a financial institution operating in the Western Cape. More specifically, the following questions will be investigated in this study: What are employees‟ perceptions of workplace diversity? Do employees differ in their views/perception of workplace diversity based on their age, race, job categories, gender, job status and qualification? To what extent is workplace diversity understood by employees? What challenges are being faced to effectively implement workplace diversity? Information was gathered from both secondary and primary resources. All relevant information that was not obtained from publications was gathered through the use of questionnaires that were completed by employees in the financial institution. The primary resources in this research study used are questionnaires that were distributed to employees in a financial institution to complete. Permission was obtained from executive management, provincial management, junior management and the human resources department to distribute the research study questionnaire to the staff in the financial institution. Data was analysed by using structural, methodical and clear reasoning. Data analysis, involving a descriptive study in order to determine the relationship between the employees‟ perception towards workplace diversity in a financial institution operating in the Western Cape The descriptive study created an understanding of the relationship between the employees‟ perception towards workplace diversity, for the researcher and the organisation. The Pearson method was used to determine whether there is a relationship between age, race, gender, job category and qualification and the perceptions of workplace diversity in a financial institution. The Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA)‟s ethical code of Professional Conduct for Psychologists was strictly adhered to. Voluntary participation was critical to the study because of the participants‟ time and energy required as well as asking participants to reveal personal information to the researcher. Permission to conduct the research was obtained from the financial institution where study was undertaken. Informed consent was obtained from participants before starting the data gathering process. Three hundred and nine (309) respondents completed a biographical questionnaire as well as the workplace diversity survey in order to understand their perception and understanding of workplace diversity. To ascertain the perception of workplace diversity, respondents completed a workplace diversity survey. While the results of the current study reveals interesting findings, the results should be interpreted with caution due to the size of the sample used which impacts the generalizability of the findings.

Frege, Hilbert, and Structuralism

Burke, Mark January 2015 (has links)
The central question of this thesis is: what is mathematics about? The answer arrived at by the thesis is an unsettling and unsatisfying one. By examining two of the most promising contemporary accounts of the nature of mathematics, I conclude that neither is as yet capable of giving us a conclusive answer to our question. The conclusion is arrived at by a combination of historical and conceptual analysis. It begins with the historical fact that, since the middle of the nineteenth century, mathematics has undergone a radical transformation. This transformation occurred in most branches of mathematics, but was perhaps most apparent in geometry. Earlier images of geometry understood it as the science of space. In the wake of the emergence of multiple distinct geometries and the realization that non-Euclidean geometries might lay claim to the description of physical space, the old picture of Euclidean geometry as the sole correct description of physical space was no longer tenable. The first chapter of the dissertation provides an historical account of some of the forces which led to the destabilization of the traditional picture of geometry. The second chapter examines the debate between Gottlob Frege and David Hilbert regarding the nature of geometry and axiomatics, ending with an argument suggesting that Hilbert’s views are ultimately unsatisfying. The third chapter continues to probe the work of Frege and, again, finds his explanations of the nature of mathematics troublingly unsatisfying. The end result of the first three chapters is that the Frege-Hilbert debate leaves us with an impasse: the traditional understanding of mathematics cannot hold, but neither can the two most promising modern accounts. The fourth and final chapter of the thesis investigates mathematical structuralism—a more recent development in the philosophy of mathematics—in order to see whether it can move us beyond the impasse of the Frege-Hilbert debate. Ultimately, it is argued that the contemporary debate between ‘assertoric’ structuralists and ‘algebraic’ structuralists recapitulates a form of the Frege-Hilbert impasse. The ultimate claim of the thesis, then, is that neither of the two most promising contemporary accounts can offer us a satisfying philosophical answer to the question ‘what is mathematics about?’.
