Green jobs in British Columbia : transitioning toward a low-carbon economy

Severin, Meredith Anne 22 May 2014 (has links)
In terms of sustainability, climate change has defined the last decade, underlining the need for a rigorous assessment of the intersection between economic and social development and environmental sustainability. This project's objectives were to define "green job" and to identify existing baselines and projections on the green economy across a selection of published reports. These findings were then examined further by interviewing representatives from the associated organisations seeking a better understanding of parameters, methodologies and policy stances on the green economy. A mixed methods approach triangulated data to gain a clearer understanding of BC's green economy. Findings confirmed a lack of consensus on definition but shed light on a range of parameters and resulting complexities. Methodologies varied, producing incongruent data that made comparisons challenging but, although the sample was relatively small, organizational mandates did fall in line with their respective estimates of the magnitude of the green economy in BC.

Γιαννίση, Παρασκευούλα 21 October 2011 (has links)

von Bahr, Mikael January 2018 (has links)
Abstract Religion and social work has a historical connection. A lot of social work comes from religious roots. In my career as a social worker I have wondered why religious aspects of social work are marginalized. The aim of this paper is to discuss how religious dimensions can be included to develop culture competence in social work with youth in Sweden The research questions asked are: -       What views on religion held by young people are presented in the text “Främmande är skrämmande”? -       How can this be analysed based on theories of the functioning of religions in the lives of young people? -       What approaches in previous research may be relevant to pay attention to religious dimensions to develop understanding of cultural competence in social work?   The method I used was qualitative thematic analysis and the theories for the analysis were deprivation theory and socialization theory. The conclusion shows that the young people in the text differentiate their own view of religion and others' views on religion. Clearly, they describe the views of others on religion on the basis of a functional religious definition where religion becomes the explanation model for devastating behavior, for example in the media's production of perpetrators in terrorism councils and the like. The work shows that earlier research examples of the introduction of religion in social work would also be possible approaches for attending to religious dimensions in order to develop the understanding of cultural competence in social work in Sweden today. This in terms of education, method and approach.

The term "terrorism" was first used at the French Revolution to characterize the régime de la terreur from Robespierre, created to consolidate post-revolution government. Since then, the term has been used to characterize methods and / or end goal of groups opposed to established power, combining factors such as fear, violence, attack on civilians and political motivation. Although these factors are observed in most cases, there is no consensus regarding the definition of terrorism among states, academics and international organizations, making it difficult to elaborate anti-counterterrorism strategies. Assuming this task of discussing definitions and practices, state policy and international relations, terrorism and violence of non-national actors and States, the research intends to analyze the prevention and fight against terrorism from the practical implications of the various concepts of terrorism in the international system, mainly within the legal framework of the United States, where there are a diversity of definitions that guide international policies of oppression to the phenomenon.

Aplicação das classificações CID-10 e CIF nas definições de deficiência e incapacidade / Application of the classifications ICD-10 and ICF on definitions of disability

Heloisa Brunow Ventura Di Nubila 14 March 2007 (has links)
The World Health Organization has nowadays two reference classifications for description of health conditions: ICD-10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Health Related Problems) and ICF (International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health). Organizations of people with disabilities and related institutions are waiting with high expectation for the ICF utilization. Lack of clear definition of “disability” is being pointed out as a deterrent for promoting the health of people with disabilities. The objective of this work is to evaluate definitions of disability, and discuss the use of ICD-10 and ICF and the contribution of ICF to improve understanding of definitions of disability through functioning and contextual factors. Some different definitions of disability have been reviewed, as well as publications involving ICF application. Diagnostic categories of health conditions of ICD-10 used in some systems are presented, as well as ICF components that could contribute for different fields of applicability regarding the understanding of definitions of disability.

Santos, Valmor Ferreira 24 February 2016 (has links)
This master's thesis in religious studies titled An Introduction to movement of New Atheism: definitions and metatheses aims to present an introduction to very basic problems New Atheism (NAT). The NAT is commonly associated to four people, namely Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett and Christopher Hitchens are considered the fathers of this set of ideas about religion. The object of this dissertation is not primarily the theses sustained by these intellectuals, but to understand the NAT itself. Regarding the research methodology is conceptual in nature, not empirical, but draws on historical and sociological research on the subject. After noting that there is great divergence in the literature and in the media of how to understand the NAT established in the first chapter a minimum concept of 'atheism' and the second 'New Atheism'. In the last chapter, the third, we discuss some metatheses, general claims about the NAT. We conclude that atheism should be understood among other properties such as the absence of belief in God or the gods. The NAT even if not defined, it can be understood as a group of theses with family resemblance. Finally, in relation to metatheses, partially agree with Zenk that NAT is a media construction; LeDrew also with a social movement that is fundamentally an ideology. However, we disagree with Paine and Nall that such a move is a fundamentalism as defined by both authors. We hope that this work is a contribution to the study of atheism in our country. No último capítulo, o terceiro, discutimos algumas metateses – alegações gerais a respeito do NAT.

An explorative study : mental wellness as perceived by black traditional healers within the South Africa context

Viljoen, Eidde 19 November 2007 (has links)
From a psychological perspective there seems to be scant knowledge regarding the perceptions and beliefs of black traditional healers in South Africa about mental wellness and, consequently, also about mental illness. The aim of this qualitative study is to encapsulate the beliefs of black traditional healers in terms of four major areas, namely, definitions of mental wellness, definitions of mental illness, causes of mental illness, and approaches to promoting mental wellness. A convenience sample of black traditional healers was selected to participate in this study. Most of the participants practice in the greater Gauteng region and hold a monthly gathering in the Hammanskraal area where most of the research was conducted. There were no specific requirements in terms of age, gender, or field of specialisation. A total of 37 black traditional healers participated. A questionnaire was used to gather information on the beliefs and perceptions of the participants about mental wellness. The participants completed the questionnaires, after which the data was collected, and then analysed by means of thematic analysis. After the data had been analysed and transcribed it was returned to the participants for them to ascertain whether the interpretations were correct. The data that was interpreted showed that the black traditional healers participating in this study have very poorly developed definitions of mental wellness, as well as inadequate knowledge about Western mental health workers. The unique definition of mental illness as perceived by black traditional healers gave rise to new insights. During the research it emerged that there was a pressing need for proper training for black traditional healers in terms of what mental wellness actually is, and the functions of Western mental health workers. Also to the flipside it provides very important insights as to how mental wellness, mental illness and the management or promotion of these are perceived and approached by the black traditional healers participating in this study. / Dissertation (MA (Clinical Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Psychology / unrestricted

Philosophical aspects of chaos : definitions in mathematics, unpredictability, and the observational equivalence of deterministic and indeterministic descriptions

Werndl, Charlotte January 2010 (has links)
This dissertation is about some of the most important philosophical aspects of chaos research, a famous recent mathematical area of research about deterministic yet unpredictable and irregular, or even random behaviour. It consists of three parts. First, as a basis for the dissertation, I examine notions of unpredictability in ergodic theory, and I ask what they tell us about the justification and formulation of mathematical definitions. The main account of the actual practice of justifying mathematical definitions is Lakatos's account on proof-generated definitions. By investigating notions of unpredictability in ergodic theory, I present two previously unidentified but common ways of justifying definitions. Furthermore, I criticise Lakatos's account as being limited: it does not acknowledge the interrelationships between the different kinds of justification, and it ignores the fact that various kinds of justification - not only proof-generation - are important. Second, unpredictability is a central theme in chaos research, and it is widely claimed that chaotic systems exhibit a kind of unpredictability which is specific to chaos. However, I argue that the existing answers to the question "What is the unpredictability specific to chaos?" are wrong. I then go on to propose a novel answer, viz. the unpredictability specific to chaos is that for predicting any event all sufficiently past events are approximately probabilistically irrelevant. Third, given that chaotic systems are strongly unpredictable, one is led to ask: are deterministic and indeterministic descriptions observationally equivalent, i.e., do they give the same predictions? I treat this question for measure-theoretic deterministic systems and stochastic processes, both of which are ubiquitous in science. I discuss and formalise the notion of observational equivalence. By proving results in ergodic theory, I first show that for many measure-preserving deterministic descriptions there is an observationally equivalent indeterministic description, and that for all indeterministic descriptions there is an observationally equivalent deterministic description. I go on to show that strongly chaotic systems are even observationally equivalent to some of the most random stochastic processes encountered in science. For instance, strongly chaotic systems give the same predictions at every observation level as Markov processes or semi-Markov processes. All this illustrates that even kinds of deterministic and indeterministic descriptions which, intuitively, seem to give very different predictions are observationally equivalent. Finally, I criticise the claims in the previous philosophical literature on observational equivalence.

Assessing the Stimulus Control of Observers.

Kuhn, Robin Merritt 12 1900 (has links)
The science of behavior analysis relies heavily on direct observation. Human observers are typically used to measure behavior in applied settings. Although the use of human observers is beneficial in many regards, it also presents challenges. Of primary concern is the extent to which the data generated by observers actually corresponds to the behavioral events of interest, and the implications this may have in terms of replication. This study assessed the effects that labels, definitions, and examples and non-examples of two different modalities had on observer accuracy, consistency, and agreement. Results showed that current practices in observer training may require refinement to ensure high observer accuracy, consistency, and agreement. Suggestions for how to improve the desired stimulus control of observers are provided.
