Outdoor Mathematics : What Challenges and Opportunities Do Research Present on Outdoor Mathematics?

Karlsson, Caroline January 2014 (has links)
This systematic literature review compiles research on the topic "outside mathematics". The collection of data has been made through searches within the database ERIC (Ebsco) for peer-reviewed articles. The articles have been analyzed and the results of the study have given a clearer insight on outdoor mathematics, but also about outdoor education. What recurs is the connection between mathematics and students' daily lives, which students need to understand these linkages to be developed in mathematics. The study has shown the importance of student participation, problem solving, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of outdoor mathematics. The conclusion is that the understanding of the connections between mathematics teaching and everyday life is important, practical outdoor mathematics should occur more frequently in schools, and that the variation of teaching is appreciated.

Perspectives of Elementary School English Language Teachers in Gaza Strip on Outdoor Education and Employing English Language Teaching Outdoor

Aldadah, Haneen January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this degree study it to fill the research gap of outdoor education in Gaza Strip-Palestine. It explored the perspective of Elementary English language teachers on what they understand outdoor education and explained the lack of research on outdoor education in this region. The study adapted a qualitative research method by conducting semi-structed interviews with 11 teachers from both private and UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees) schools in the Gaza-Strip. The data was analyzed by employing inductive content analysis. The result has provided that the teachers have heard of outdoor education, but yet they lack awareness regarding the actual term and what it means. Adding to this, they responded positively on considering implementing outdoor English language lesson. However, they illustrated limitation that they would face to conduct them. The research evoked that these limitation are the same reasons which why outdoor education and learning is not common in the Gaza-Strip. Thus, they stand behind the main causes of the lake of research in this field in that certain region.

Outdoor Mathematics : A systematic literature study on how it is implemented and why it is favorable.

Seger, Emma, Segerdorff, Sofie January 2019 (has links)
Mathematics is a subject that is widely used outdoors, but there are mainly tips and ideas for how it is carried out, and less information about what scientific basis it is conducted on. The purpose of the study is to increase the understanding of the research field, with a focus on the implementation of outdoor mathematics and why the field is favorable. The method used to answer the purpose is a systematic literature study. The result shows that there are three main themes for implementing outdoor mathematics, which are to use the environment, to use tools and to organize outside mathematics in a certain way. These have sub-themes that are to explore nature in the surrounding areas, gardening, digital tools, natural objects, cross-cutting topics and combination of indoors & outdoors. The results also show that it is beneficial to conduct outdoor mathematics for students as it improves their learning, they get positive experiences, they are involved and motivated, and the personal development is positively affected. For teachers, this is beneficial as it leads to increased flexibility as well as increased self-confidence and increased competence.

Utomhuspedagogikens stöttning för grundskoleelevers lärande / The support of Outdoor education for elementary school pupil’s s learning

Winberg, Lykke, Löfberg Nilsson, Alex January 2022 (has links)
This paper is written for elementary school teachers and teacher students. The paper focuses on Outdoor education as support for elementary school children’s learning. An overview of the subject Outdoor education was performed to see how it can be used in school to support the pupils learning in science studies. Different scientific articles and books about Outdoor education were reviewed to get a reliable answer to the main question in this paper. The result shows support that may be beneficial for pupil’s learning outdoors. An example that illustrates this is that the pupils' sensory impressions become amplified when they are taught outside. The senses act as an important part of the support by improving the children’s memory and ability to concentrate. Another example is Outdoor education’s ability to concretize different scientific concepts. Outdoor education also gives the students a meaningful approach to the subject that helps them to develop knowledge within science studies. The conclusion shows that Outdoor education should be used to a large extent in the ordinary lessons in science education to support students' learning ability.

The State of Outdoor Education in Northeast Tennessee: Preschool Teacher Attitudes Toward Outdoor Education

Landy, Cathy 01 August 2018 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the state of outdoor education in preschool classrooms in Northeast Tennessee, with a specific focus on preschool teachers’ attitudes toward outdoor education. This comparative, mixed-methods study focused in part on teachers’ current beliefs about outdoor education, how they use the outdoor environment, and whether their attitudes influence their lesson planning for outdoor education. Participants were preschool teachers in public, private, church-affiliated, and Head Start preschools in 4 counties in northeast Tennessee. The study sample consisted of 81 participants (80 female; 1 male). Ages ranged from 20-65 years (M = 40.76). The survey consisted of 42 questions, including demographics, outdoor education experiences, and attitudes toward outdoor education. Teachers were compared on several factors: attitudes toward outdoor education, their early experiences in the outdoors, and how they use the outdoor environment. Thirty-three outdoor environments in the aforementioned preschools were assessed using the Preschool Outdoor Environment Measurement Scale (POEMS) (DeBord, Hestenes, Moore, Cosco, & McGinnis, 2005). Eight preschool teachers from the pool of 81 participants were selected at random based on their school’s playground/outdoor environment assessment (high vs. low quality) and their own attitudes (positive vs. negative) toward outdoor education. Interviews were conducted to give a more complete picture of preschool outdoor education. Results showed that preschool teachers had relatively high attitudes on outdoor education (M = 75.86, SD = 7.99) on a scaled score where 100 was the highest possible. Teachers who reported planning lessons for outdoor learning had slightly higher attitudes (M = 76.9, SD = 7.6) toward outdoor education than those who do not plan (M = 74.1, SD = 9.0), although differences were not significant F(1, 76) = 1.134, p = 0.29. Most teachers referred to the outdoor area as a playground (84%) and used it used it most frequently for supervised play (99%). These findings, along with others reported, indicate that although preschool teachers see the benefits of outdoor learning, there are still barriers to outdoor education.

Erman Andersson, Margie January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of my work is to increase knowledge about how preschool teachers express themselves about outdoor pedagogy and their reasoning on how that work can contribute to children's development and learning. I use the sociocultural theory from Vygotsky’s and Dewey’s views and to analyze the interviews’ answer in the result’s section of the study. The method that I have used in my research is the qualitative interview method. There are four preschool teachers from different preschools that I interviewed and they answered a number of questions about outdoor pedagogy. The results of my survey show that all informants have positive attitudes towards working with outdoor pedagogy, and perceive the concept based on the preschool teacher's experience, knowledge and skills in that area. The study shows that there are different working methods, intentions and variation in the work. The results also show that some preschool teachers do not have much experience in outdoor pedagogy, but it has been noticed that they dare to try out new things and are interested in learning more from this area. In addition, the preschool teachers I interview for this study tell me that there are opportunities for the children to discover and learn outside. These opportunities are a complement to things the children learn indoors.
