Concepts of freedom in the storm and stress dramas by Lenz and Klingef

Kitching, Juta Kovamees January 1967 (has links)
This thesis is based on eleven Storm and Stress dramas of Lenz and Kllnger. It discusses extensively the lack of freedom of their Storm and Stress characters in the society of the day, as seen in the dramas, and also examines these characters' search for freedom and the meaning they attribute to freedom. In addition, this investigation attempts to establish a concept of ultimate freedom and to show that some "Stürmer und Dränger" possess it and are thereby able to carry out their mission of social improvement while finding individual happiness and fulfillment. The term "Stürmer und Dränger" is used throughout the thesis to mean only the Storm and Stress characters in the plays discussed and does not refer to the writers of this period. / Arts, Faculty of / Central Eastern Northern European Studies, Department of / Graduate

Cultural habits : The travel writing of Isabella Bird, Max Dauthendey and Ai Wu, 1850-1930

Ng, Maria Noelle 11 1900 (has links)
Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978) has generally been recognized as an influential study of western literary perceptions of the East, but numerous critics have also challenged his geographical parameters as too narrow and his conceptual framework as insufficiently complex. This thesis further expands the study of Orientalism (1) by focussing on a colonized area generally overlooked in this context, namely Southeast Asia; (2) by including a writer of German background, a nationality frequently omitted in the discussion of colonial history in general and of Orientalism in particular; and (3) perhaps most importantly, by juxtaposing the views of a Chinese author with those of western writers. This thesis is the critical study of three authors about their travels in Southeast Asia: Isabella Bird (1831-1904), Max Dauthendey (1867-1918) and Ai Wu (1904-1992). Since postcolonial criticism does not generally concern itself with the cultural habits which are formed in a traveller’s native society prior to his or her departure, this approach alone does not provide the tools for the differentiated kind of investigation I wish to conduct. I therefore draw on the cultural criticism of Pierre Bourdieu (1972, 1979, 1993), Johannes Fabian (1983, 1991), and Walter Benjamin (1969, 1974, 1985), to focus on a decisive moment in each traveller’s background, which may be said to have shaped his or her perception of other cultures. In Bird’s case, this event was the 1851 Exhibition which encapsulated the Victorian ideals of industrial progress, imperial expansion, and Christian philanthropy. By contrast, Dauthendey’s responses were shaped by the Art Nouveau sensibilities he bad acquired in the German, French, and Scandinavian bohème. Finally, Al Wu derived his outlook from the May Fourth Movement, a brief period when western ideas were welcomed into Chinese social and literary history. Said’s Orietalism posits the homogeneous cultural entity of an imperial West in contradistinction to a victimized East. This thesis does not reverse these categories, but it does provide the space for an equal discussion of Chinese and western writings within a differentiated historical context. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

A teleologia especulativa de Hegel : vida logica e vida do espirito / Hegel's speculative teleology : logical life and life of the mind

This thesis comprises an analysis of the concept of teleology in the Hegel¿s Science of the Logic, intended as a clarification of the differentiations between external and internal teleology in its correlation with the spirit, that is, to clarify the teleological path from the Subjective Logic all the way to the Absolute Idea. The concept of life, of internal intention, is present in the Science of the Logic as logical idea of life, which is the immediate idea. The terminus of the logical life is the emergence of the life of the mind, as a logical idea of the mind, which is presented in the Idea of Knowing, the intermediate moment of the idea. Thus, the conducting thread of analysis is the double teleological movement, external and internal, which culminates with the Absolute Idea, the thought of 'thought¿, whose structural matrix is the logical idea of the life / Doutorado / Historia da Filosofia Contemporanea / Doutor em Filosofia

Our purpose in this dissertation is to reflect on the constitution of the Subject and the importance that the Other has in this process in Hegel's Phenomenology of the Spirit. It shows in the dialectical dynamism of the path of consciousness to selfconsciousness, in each supersession of the figures of Sensitive Certainty, Perception and Understanding, presented by Hegel on this path, that there is no Self without the recognition of the Other. Hegel's analysis that the subject's constitution is based on the dialectic in the relation of consciousness allows us to understand the ontological importance of the Other and to see that it is only in this relationship that we are constituted. Only in the other do we find our self, there is only subjectivity in intersubjectivity, this statement will become clearer as the figures of the development of the spirit are superseded. Consciousness reaches self-consciousness for gold, and follows the course far beyond recognition in a necessary relation to the other.

Hegel y Spinoza en torno al criterio interno de la verdad

Sepúlveda Caro, Esteban January 2019 (has links)

The Reemergence of Kantian Ethics: Have We Adequately Responded to Hegel's Objections?

Thompson, Gwen C. 10 November 1997 (has links)
The philosophies of Kant and Hegel have experienced a renaissance for the past thirty years, and a debate continues as to whether Hegel's objections to Kant's moral philosophy are sound, and/or whether Hegel's ethics are an improvement on Kant's. This debate takes many forms, and most recently, theorists have been interested in measuring Hegel's objections against contemporary theories following in the Kantian tradition. 'Critics,' (theorists defending Hegel's moral point of view) suggests such reconstructed theories leave themselves open to identical criticisms Hegel wielded at Kant almost 200 years ago. 'Defenders,' (theorists supporting Kant's moral philosophy, or a revised version) reply in one of two ways. They either suggest that Hegel's criticisms of Kant are unwarranted, meaning Hegel misinterprets Kant's ideas and/or purposes; or, they maintain that Kant's ethics are vulnerable to Hegel's objections, however some newer version of Kant's ethics is not because it has been purged of those Kantian elements which Hegel attacks. Clearly, both views render Hegel's critique of Kant obsolete. So, why are we witnessing such an aggressive resurgence of Hegelian-styled arguments in the contemporary literature? In seeking to answer this question, this thesis reconsiders Hegel's actual critique of Kant. In this way, the thesis falls into a specific category of political philosophy. It is a study in the 'history of ideas.' Rather than considering the question of whether contemporary Critics or Defenders have the better argument concerning the merit of reconstructed Kantian theories, I intend to re-evaluate the soundness of Hegel's objections to Kantian ethics. Kant's moral and political thought on the proper ordering of society is deeply embedded in the pluralist democracies of the western world. As such, those Kantian ideas/elements should be defendable against Hegelian criticisms. Following an in-depth consideration of Hegel's critique of Kant, I argue that whereas Hegel accurately identifies weaknesses in the system of Kant's moral philosophy, his critique does not successfully achieve its goal. It does not show that Kant's ethical theory is an inadequate prescription for the rational agent seeking to act morally. Rather, it serves as a warning of the dangers inherent in democratic liberal theory.
