Paz, Martha Costa Guterres January 2015 (has links)
A foray into romance Avalovara, Osman Lins, opens up possibilities for the discovery of an acoustic universe full of symbolism permeating the scenes of the narrative. This paper is based on the researches of the Canadian composer and educator Raymond Murray Schafer about the global soundscape. It propose to investigate the relationship between the literary work Avalovara and a sound language from the novel acustic expressions, identifying the possible meanings of such connections. Was necessary a transposition to the fictional world of Avalovara of the analysis methodology and classification of sounds used by Schafer, having been developed a categorization table containing the most significant scenarios with the sounds identified in each of them. A passage along the paths of ecocriticism and sound ecology allow, based on Schafer's view of noise associated with various expressions of strident sounds present in the narrative, to glimpse a proximity of the thought of Osman Lins with the ideas of acoustic ecology. Natural sounds, music, noise and silence blend themselves in a symphony of sound oppositions where the going and coming give life and rhythm to the narrative, connecting the literary language with the musical language. Interrelate also the structure of the novel and the formal organization of relevant musical pieces such as the Catulli Carmina cantata, of Carl Orff, and the fragments of the introduction of the Sonata in F minor (K462) for harpsichord, of Scarlatti. Four musics of contrasting character, here called of musical axis, shows the route of the protagonists in their searches, their anxieties and their frustrations. The Avalovara bird with their chants, shouts and spiral movements brings up a world of mysteries that allows associations and interpret the various symbolisms related to bird guide. The words in the body of refer to a process of initiation into the knowledge, when the mythical bird introduces her in the world of sounds. Some aspects of tantric philosophy are addressed here because of the profound similarity of spiritual ascension process with the trajectory of Abel and , in his dogged pursuit of absolute knowledge from the control of the mysteries of words that permeate the body of the triple woman. The silence in the novel is analyzed from various perspectives, relating it with the tantrik philosophy and the thought of Schafer and John Cage. The novel was regarded as a unique soundscape and its scenic fragments called, in this work, of sound scenarios.

In the 47th year of Wan-li, Wang Jide (1540-1622), a literatus in Guiji County, published the anthology of Yuan comedies named Guzaju in his personal printing house Guquzhai. In this book, he compiled 20 plays written in the Yuan dynasty with beautiful book illustrations. Rain on the Phoenix Tree was the 17th play in this book. / The illustrations for Rain on the Phoenix Tree in Guzaju were good examples for “Hui School of woodblock prints. Compared these woodcuts with those in the same style and paintings existing in the same period, I argued that the “Hui School of woodblock prints actually followed the style of narrative paintings made by Qiu Ying. Moreover, the story of the Tang emperor Minghuang has become a popular theme in the field of both Chinese literature and painting. Those traditions not only contributed to the birth of Bai Pu’s (1226-1306) comedy Rain on the Phoenix Tree, but also prided fruitful paintings as patterns for the professional painters like Qiu Ying. Since Qiu’s work prevailed the painting market in Jiangnan, thousands of narrative paintings including the theme of emperor Minghuang followed Qiu’s style. These paintings acted as commercial products as well as pictorial drafts for the engravers in late Ming. / Finally, the form of Guzaju and Wang Jide’s publication activities both showed that Wang, as owner of Guquzhai, aimed to use the illustrations to cater to the market and he did conversely get the pictorial resources from the market. Besides, the booming commercial trade of paintings in Jiangnan helped us finally get the answer for the origin of “Hui School of woodblock prints as well as showing the transformation of art criteria in the late Ming dynasty. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / "2013 nian 7 yue". / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2013. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 86-95). / Abstract in Chinese and English. / Lai Ni.

This thesis concerns the research on Li Yu under the perspectives of regional literary studies. Li Yu (1611? - after 1711), also referred to as Li Xuanyu, is a renowned Suzhou playwright widely recognized in the history of Chinese drama. Since 1920s, researches on Li Yu have yielded significant results. However, as “realism, “didacticism and “folk color have become the core concepts in the interpretations of the works of Suzhou playwrights, study on how regional factors have influenced these dramatists has long been omitted. This thesis tries to trace how “place shaped the production of Li Yu’s plays. In other words, the study investigates the role of “Suzhou in the formation of Li Yu’s idea, the writing of the play, and the representation including performance on stage. This research also sheds light on the connection between Li Yu and local culture, as well as the interaction between the dramatist and his audience. / This thesis consists of seven chapters. The first chapter provides a literature review on the discussion of Li Yu, explains the motivation for this work and outlines the organization of the thesis. The second chapter explicates the biographical background of Li Yu, with an introduction of imperial examinations, domestic troupes and the idea of “urban recluse, so as to illustrate the importance of Li Yu’s stay in Suzhou before re-interpreting his works. The third to the sixth chapters involve close readings of Li Yu’s texts. The third chapter focuses on Li Yu’s early plays, namely, A Handful of Snow [Yipeng xue], The Gate Separating Humans and Beasts [Renshou guan], The Everlasting Union [Yong tuanyuan], Winning the Prize Courtesan [Zhan huakui]). Through analyzing these plays, this chapter portrays how geographical and social forces affected Li Yu’s early dramas and his later works. The fourth chapter examines Li Yu’s prominent drama Registers of the Pure and Loyal [Qingzhong pu] by addressing the problem of identity and historical narratives, especially how “Suzhou was employed by the author in the famous political incident “Kaidu zhi bian, that happened in 1626, and in the cyclic recurrence of historical events. The fifth chapter illustrates the journey of Suzhou literatus Huang Xiangjian from Suzhou to Yunnan to search for his father and his return with him (1653-1661), and discerns how emotional power among local citizens contributed to the composition of Li’s play, Union Across Ten Thousand Miles [Wanli yuan]. The sixth chapter explores the reception of Li Yu’s plays, by studying the performances of Beating the Officer from Union Across Ten Thousand Miles. Since this play was staged in local theatres, how its stagecraft developed and transformed across time and space is traced in this chapter. “Political consciousness is key to understanding the costumes and Suzhou dialect used in these performances. The seventh chapter is a conclusion summarizing the above arguments and providing insights into areas that await future explorations. / Through case studies that are interrelated, this thesis demonstrates how “Suzhou was vital to Li Yu’s literary production. Living in Suzhou, Li assimilated local history, contemporary events, dialect with special idioms, geographical landscapes, folk customs, and family histories, so as to interact with the interests of local audience. On the one hand, this interaction has been revealed in my study of various dramas written by Li Yu; on the other hand, this interaction in my view, represents his self identity and local experience. The aim of this research on Li Yu is not limited to the eminent playwright. It is believed that this thesis can also provide information that contributes to the study of Suzhou playwrights, regional literature in the Ming-Qing era, as well as the history of Chinese drama. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / "2012 nian 2 yue". / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 161-172). / Abstract in Chinese and English. / Chen Yajun.

As the most important city in the Far East after the Opium War in terms of physical capital and western civilization importation, Shanghai, with an unprecedented openness, created a hybrid environment of domestic and foreign immigrants. Furthermore, its location advantage at the meeting point of the South-North major transportation routes and within the most economically developed regions of Jiangsu and Zhejiang produced an unparalleled social tolerance and cultural context, thus providing new room for revival and innovation of then declining figure paintings. / As the most popular Shanghai-based artist in the 20th century, Ren Bonian's life spanned Late Qing's most critical 50 years that were full of external challenges. Under then Shanghai's complex historical and cultural background, his figure paintings, especially women story paintings, demonstrated the significance of multi-referential. His women paintings were so welcomed also have other reasons: such as the influences from other Shanghai artists of women paintings; his reference to and evolution of classical image in his paintings; his absorption and creation of folk image; and his understanding and interpretation of Japanese image. Ren Bonian's rewriting and re-reading of women's images in his diversified women paintings showed the abundance of women-related topics in late Qing. / This thesis is to show that a unique path of women paintings in the development of figure paintings can be reflected in the work of Ren Bonian, the most creative figure-painting artist in 19th century. Moreover, via the artist himself and the vertical and horizontal axis constructed from his figure paintings, I investigate the reference to and digging of women paintings, the supply of the most active nutrient for innovations by figure paintings of women-related topics to Shanghai arts, and the borrowing and conversion of women image, consumption representation and visual desire in the diversified old and new, Chinese and foreign culture.

The successful trajectory of the artist Luiz Gonzaga is observed, by means of the creation of the baião music and music genre, the instrumental formation of the northeastern trio and all his vocal and scenic speech, representative of the Northeastern region, which occurred in the in-between field-city. The emersion of Luiz Gonzaga is articulated with the migratory flow of the 1950s, with highlights for the city of São Paulo and its work and growth speech. In sequence, the 1960s are focused, with the emersion of the Pedro Sertanejo forró house, one of the first in the city of São Paulo, and of the recording studio Cantagalo , unfolding the whole social network of knowledge and power, observing that the cultural manifestations, in their day-to-day social processes, worked as fighting strategies for territories inside the city. No. of bitstreams: 1 Jonas Rodrigues de Moraes.pdf: 12812808 bytes, checksum: f810ff035998b07d3da34bc9fcf2bdc6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-10-16 / Fundação Ford / The discussion about the Northeast and the political division of the country regionalization take part in the pathways institutors of history dynamics as a debate that goes beyond all discourses and power circles present in academic, politic, artistic, and literary points of view. This context has provided the structural elements of what can be called the invention or reinvention of spatial identities, place, the northeast region, and subject, the northeastern people. This dissertation discusses the musical production and the artistic trajectory of Luis Gonzaga, precisely with his invention of the baião and other genres that are appropriated by the accordionist, which served as structural discourses of the referred identity markers of a northeastern identity. The analysis of the songs (lyrics and rhythms) and the performance of the author served as discursive tactics for the construction of a northeastern imaginary. The baião and other genres played by a stage performance organization, called musical trio, forged a type of music which embedded itself naturally in the processes of identity negotiability with its audience. The discursive translation of northeast and northeastern people was also engendered through images and symbols retrieved from garments of regional traditions (the bandits and the cowboys) and reassigned meaning by the artist within a socially urban context. The musicality of Gonzaga was constructed in an intersection between the northeastern backwoods (backlands) and the urban centers (the civilized lands). His production of sounds, themes, and acoustic culture combined were linked to the northeastern regionalism. Gonzaga s music had the capacity to express a sense of northeastern identity (northeasternity or nordestinidade) which reverberated and found resonance in its audience (listeners/receivers). The analysis of the songs was systematically organized seeking to observe the themes that demonstrated and corroborated with the identity landmarks in regards to the northeastern territoriality. It should be noted that the use of such themes was genuinely related to social experiences lived and Gonzaga s musicality so that the themes presented in his repertoire were: drought, suffering, homesickness/nostalgia, baião, backwoods/backlands (countryside), aboio (the cry of the Brazilian cowboy), and cowboy among others. It is a dissertation examined within the perspective of Cultural History, approaching in its theoretical aspects the conceptual categories of identity, traditions, acoustic culture, social imaginary, performance, rural/urban, territory, images, cultural resistance and preservation, national-popular, hybridization, and other rhythms referenced in consonance with the ways of living, the symbolic values, customs and musical artistry.
