Paz, Martha Costa Guterres January 2015 (has links)
A foray into romance Avalovara, Osman Lins, opens up possibilities for the discovery of an acoustic universe full of symbolism permeating the scenes of the narrative. This paper is based on the researches of the Canadian composer and educator Raymond Murray Schafer about the global soundscape. It propose to investigate the relationship between the literary work Avalovara and a sound language from the novel acustic expressions, identifying the possible meanings of such connections. Was necessary a transposition to the fictional world of Avalovara of the analysis methodology and classification of sounds used by Schafer, having been developed a categorization table containing the most significant scenarios with the sounds identified in each of them. A passage along the paths of ecocriticism and sound ecology allow, based on Schafer's view of noise associated with various expressions of strident sounds present in the narrative, to glimpse a proximity of the thought of Osman Lins with the ideas of acoustic ecology. Natural sounds, music, noise and silence blend themselves in a symphony of sound oppositions where the going and coming give life and rhythm to the narrative, connecting the literary language with the musical language. Interrelate also the structure of the novel and the formal organization of relevant musical pieces such as the Catulli Carmina cantata, of Carl Orff, and the fragments of the introduction of the Sonata in F minor (K462) for harpsichord, of Scarlatti. Four musics of contrasting character, here called of musical axis, shows the route of the protagonists in their searches, their anxieties and their frustrations. The Avalovara bird with their chants, shouts and spiral movements brings up a world of mysteries that allows associations and interpret the various symbolisms related to bird guide. The words in the body of refer to a process of initiation into the knowledge, when the mythical bird introduces her in the world of sounds. Some aspects of tantric philosophy are addressed here because of the profound similarity of spiritual ascension process with the trajectory of Abel and , in his dogged pursuit of absolute knowledge from the control of the mysteries of words that permeate the body of the triple woman. The silence in the novel is analyzed from various perspectives, relating it with the tantrik philosophy and the thought of Schafer and John Cage. The novel was regarded as a unique soundscape and its scenic fragments called, in this work, of sound scenarios.

The current study aimed at investigating through Helio Serejo´s narratives (1912-2007), the way border is inserted and the way by which subjects who transit in the “abandoned border” in times of postwar and territorial occupation. In order to do so, the following plays were selected: Homens de aço: a luta nos ervais (2008), Vida de Erval (2008), Pelas Orilhas da Fronteira (2008), Caraí (2008), O Tereré que me inspira (2008), Pialando...no Más (2008), Carai Ervateiro (2008) and No Mundo Bruto dos Ervais (2008), due to the tales, stories and chronics, texts inserted into these plays shift particularly in the borders of Brazil-Paraguay and their real and fiction characters experience a sort of dispersive nomandism in an imaginary border zone, – in the forest – by the paths of Matte Laranjeira company (1877-1944). The possibility of analyzing through the spaces, from the crossing – continuous and by the time – the border subject may lead us to recognize possible identity representations with few studies. The investigation lies on the critical theoretical approach based on the cultural studies: Bhabha (2003), Hall (2003) Canclini (2003) e Achugar (2006), once the main themes transit by the relationship between literature and the identity formation aspects. We argue that serejian literary work is in narrating what was seen and listened, what happened and what would have happened in the memory and in the forgiven revival. Studying Hélio Serejo play is a way of (re)descovering aspects of “subjects´positioning” hidden by official history, particularly when the “border Brazil was once Paraguay” is concerned

Modelski, Jaqueline 15 August 2016 (has links)
Submitted by Ana Guimarães Pereira (agpereir@ucs.br) on 2016-11-23T15:36:15Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Jaqueline Modelski.pdf: 1377584 bytes, checksum: 5c06aba292ddfb13df6bd8e3f3feea8c (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2016-11-23T15:36:15Z (GMT). 'You are what you read' : intertextual relations in Patrick White's The solid mandala

Stefani, Monica January 2011 (has links)
This work performs an intertextual analysis of the Nobel Prize winning Australian novelist Patrick White’s The Solid Mandala, published in 1966, as part of an effort to boost studies of his novels in Brazil and to investigate why his critical fortune has been undergoing a negative phase recently. First, we briefly present his biography and the conditions surrounding the writing and publication of The Solid Mandala. Later on, we present the historical context of the novel. The relations of conflict and complementation involving the twin brothers Waldo and Arthur Brown in the narrative are analysed, but we focus on their relation to literature (which is an important theme in the novel), depicting their roles as readers and writers in the story, thus, apprehending their feelings towards each other, worldviews and outlook on life (Waldo aspires to become a great writer, and Arthur actually produces a poem). Gérard Genette’s studies on Narratology are used to support our analysis, particularly in the intertextual relation between The Solid Mandala and F. Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, which is the title that calls Arthur’s attention. In his pursue to find the whole of his life, Arthur incorporates various elements (centred at just one point, his mandalas) and is able to create his own philosophy. At the end we see that Arthur transcends his reality by using the reading of the Russian novel as an instrument. This study enlightens the pertinence of revisiting Patrick White’s oeuvre (since it proves to be so well tuned in to the current philosophical issues being discussed), and places The Solid Mandala in the context of worldwide literature.

Tension in 18th century Chinese painting

Maraun, Timothy Fritz January 1990 (has links)
In Western scholarship, eighteenth century Chinese paintings have consistently been seen as playful, eccentric, and odd. This characterization has been based on the formal qualities of some of the paintings. At the same time, Chinese scholars have written of the scholarly virtues and ambitions of the painters producing the works. The contradiction between these two interpretations is in part consistent with the Western and Chinese approaches generally. But it also stems from the mixed signals and information generated in the eighteenth century. The nature of painting, not just formally, but socially has yet to be explained in a way which takes into account some actual historical contradictions of the eighteenth century. In order to explain these historical tensions, I combine a biographical (Chinese) approach with a contextual approach (Western) in a study of two different scholar painters, Zheng Xie and Li Shan. I juxtapose biographical sources with artworks, and less official writings relating Zheng Xie and Li Shan, in order to describe the tensions involved in painting for the literatus within the merchant culture of Yangzhou. These tensions existed between the literatus' expected status and that granted him, between his ideal of the role of painting in the scholar's life and the implications of commercial painting, and between his emphasis upon poetry and his popularity as a painter. In all cases, the tensions in eighteenth century literati painting arise from the difficult relationship between the painter and patron, and between the painter and the ideas of a broader public. The lack of a clear definition of "scholar" and "scholar painting" amongst literati illustrates the literatus' loss of control over the definition of his lifestyle. / Arts, Faculty of / Art History, Visual Art and Theory, Department of / Graduate

Toncelli, Raffaella 23 December 2010 (has links)

Shaping the Future Past: Finding History, Creating Identity in the Kwan Hsu Papers

Donnelly, Lisa Chere' 01 January 2012 (has links)
Dr. Kwan Hsu was neither a superstar nor a celebrity. Her name does not come up in conversations about important contributors to her field of biophysics nor is she instantly recognizable for her contributions to Portland State University's international program or the state of Oregon's business ties with China. Yet she was a contributor, a cog-in-the-wheel, at the very least, in all of these areas and more. She was a peripheral member of a well-known Chinese family, but few in the United States know of or perhaps have interest in, but otherwise, she had no great connections or family ties to generate interest in her story. How does one process a collection for a woman who does not meet the traditional criteria for excellence or success or public interest for an archive? Where is the value to the larger historical narrative of our time in preserving the memories of someone who was non-remarkable, or, conversely, someone who may be even too unique to contribute to that greater narrative? These are the questions I wrestled with when I first came to this collection. As my research progressed, I realized that I faced more questions, and that to come to any understanding that might answer them, I was going to have to research the history of archives and archival processes. Science, the Cold War, Communist China, women, the immigrant experience, all of these issues became part of my thesis, however shallowly I was able to investigate them. Questions of identity and historiography, of power and discourse were explored. In the end, what I found was that a collection that on the outside looked unimpressive and unenlightening, could indeed be very valuable, and provide insight into any number of areas of current interest in historical research. This is that story.
