Causes of the Jewish Diaspora Revolt in Alexandria: Regional Uprisings from the Margins of Greco-Roman Society, 115-117 CE

Vargas, Miguel M. 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the progression from relatively peaceful relations between Alexandrians and Jews under the Ptolemies to the Diaspora Revolt under the Romans. A close analysis of the literature evidences that the transition from Ptolemaic to Roman Alexandria had critical effects on Jewish status in the Diaspora. One of the most far reaching consequences of the shift from the Ptolemies to Romans was forcing the Alexandrians to participate in the struggle for imperial patronage. Alexandrian involvement introduced a new element to the ongoing conflict among Egypt’s Jews and native Egyptians. The Alexandrian citizens consciously cut back privileges the Jews previously enjoyed under the Ptolemies and sought to block the Jews from advancing within the Roman system. Soon the Jews were confronted with rhetoric slandering their civility and culture. Faced with a choice, many Jews forsook Judaism and their traditions for more upwardly mobile life. After the outbreak of the First Jewish War Jewish life took a turn for the worse. Many Jews found themselves in a system that classified them according to their heritage and ancestry, limiting advancement even for apostates. With the resulting Jewish tax (fiscus Judaicus) Jews were becoming more economically and socially marginalized. The Alexandrian Jews were a literate society in their own right, and sought to reverse their diminishing prestige with a rhetoric of their own. This thesis analyzes Jewish writings and pagan writings about the Jews, which evidences their changing socio-political position in Greco-Roman society. Increasingly the Jews wrote with an urgent rhetoric in attempts to persuade their fellow Jews to remain loyal to Judaism and to seek their rights within the construct of the Roman system. Meanwhile, tensions between their community and the Alexandrian community grew. In less than 100 years, from 30 CE to 117 CE, the Alexandrians attacked the Jewish community on at least three occasions. Despite the advice of the most Hellenized elites, the Jews did not sit idly by, but instead sought to disrupt Alexandrian meetings, anti-Jewish theater productions, and appealed to Rome. In the year 115 CE, tensions reached a high. Facing three years of violent attacks against their community, Alexandrian Jews responded to Jewish uprisings in Cyrene and Egypt with an uprising of their own. Really a series of revolts, historians have termed these events simply “the Diaspora Revolt.”

The Israelite conquest : history or myth? : an achaeological evaluation of the Israelite conquest during the periods of Joshua and the Judges

Kennedy, Titus Michael 11 1900 (has links)
The thesis examines the archaeological and epigraphic data from Canaan during the Late Bronze Age in order to evaluate the historicity of the Israelite Conquest accounts in the books of Joshua and Judges. The specific sites examined in detail include Jericho, Ai, Hazor, Shechem, and Dan. Additionally, the chronology and setting for the period of the alleged Israelite Conquest is explained through both textual and archaeological sources, and several ancient documentary sources are examined which demonstrate the presence of Israel in Canaan during the Late Bronze Age. The thesis concludes that a vast amount of archaeological evidence indicates that the sites of Jericho, Hazor, Shechem, and Dan were occupied, destroyed, and resettled at the specific times and in the manner consistent with the records from the books of Joshua and Judges, and that ancient documents indicate that the Israelites had appeared in Canaan during the Late Bronze Age. / Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies / M.A. (Biblical Archaeology)

David and Solomon : investigating the archaeological evidence

Thompson, Lynn 02 1900 (has links)
The historicity of the United Monarchy has recently come under attack. The biblical 'minimalists' say that a reconstruction of ancient Israel is impossible with the sources that we have access to, and the glory and wealth of Solomon's empire is mere fiction. They disregard the Bible as a reliable source, and archaeology because it is mute and open to interpretation. Some scholars have suggested lowering the traditional dates on certain archaeological strata, resulting in an entirely different picture of the tenth century BCE. Other scholars say that the United Monarchy definitely did exist and consider the Bible a valuable historical source. The evidence for the tenth century and the United Monarchy as shown by the Hebrew Bible and archaeology is investigated as well as various key sites in Israel. The conclusion is that the traditional chronology and viewpoint of the United Monarchy still needs to be respected. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / M.A. (Biblical Studies)

Výstava versus výstavnictví. Československé pavilony na Expo 1967 v Montrealu a Expo 1970 v Ósace / Exhibition versus "exhibitioning". The Czechoslovak pavilions at Expo 1967 in Montreal and Expo 1970 in Osaka

Nekvindová, Terezie January 2014 (has links)
The paper focuses on the Czechoslovak pavilions at the 1967 and 1970 World Expos. Both events took place in the period around 1968, when, however briefly, the Czechoslovak visual arts partially overlapped with the state's cultural policy. The pavilions (especially at Expo 70) also reflected the socio- political contexts of the year 1968.. In Czechoslovakia towards the end of the 1960s, the purpose of "exhibitioning" - i.e., the state-sponsored exhibition trade - was to communicate with the public and to (re)present the country abroad. Its main goal was to promote and spread the ruling ideology. On the other hand, the Czechoslovak visual arts scene was beginning to consciously work with the medium of the exhibition as a comprehensively composed unit, either through innovative exhibition design and installation or through installation art. While the exhibition trade reached its high point in the 1960s and began to disintegrate into rigid mannerism towards the end of the decade, real experiments with the format of the art exhibition were just beginning. This study focuses on the question of how these two fields (art and the exhibition trade) approached the medium of the exhibition in the 1960s. I study the Czechoslovak pavilions as a cultural artifact in which aesthetic, social, political, and economic forces...

Gregorian Chant in the Organ Symphonies of Widor and Dupré, a Lecture Recital, Together With Three Recitals of Selected Works of J. S. Bach, S. Barber, A. Bruckner, F. Couperin, M. Dupré, M. Duruflé, C. Franck, W. A. Mozart, O. Messiaen, J. Pachelbel, M. Reger, and Others

Thomas, Paul Lindsley 05 1900 (has links)
The lecture recital was given on November 20, 1979. The final movement of Widor's Symphonie Gothique, opus 70, the first movement of Widor's Symphonie Romane, opus 73, and the first movement of Dupré's Symphonie-Passion, opus 23 were performed following a lecture on Gregorian Chant in the organ symphonies of Widor and Dupré. The lecture included a brief historical discussion of the decline of organ literature following the French Classical School, the development of the Modern French Organ School beginning with the establishment of the organ department at the Paris Conservatory, the revival of plainsong and the establishment of the School of Solesmes, and the influence of César Franck and the organ symphony. The main body of the lecture included biographical sketches of Widor and Dupré, a discussion of the general characteristics of their organ symphonies, with the emphasis upon those movements specifically employing the use of Gregorian chant.

Svaneholms bruk : Studie om hur Svaneholms bruk klarade av ekonomiska svårigheter på slutet av 70-talet.

Fjälltorp, Filip January 2021 (has links)

Electronic and magnetic properties of transition metal compounds: An x-ray spectroscopic study

Küpper, Karsten 15 July 2005 (has links)
The aim of the present work was to develop a detailed picture of the electronic and magnetic properties of a number of interesting transition metal compounds. A number of complementary experimental and theoretical techniques have been applied, special emphasis was given to x-ray spectroscopies. The studies led to a number of results, and the following conclusions can be drawn: The influence of the magnetic ground state (high-spin (FeO) vs. low-spin (FeS2)) with respect to the recorded x-ray spectra was investigated. In particular, by performing RXES on the Fe L edge of the two compounds, very different ratios of La / Lβ integrated intensity for excitation energies close to the L2 edge have been observed. This effect has been explained in terms of the magnetic structure of FeO (high spin), which inhibits Coster-Kronig processes. Special attention has been given to the direct investigation of orbital ordering in a three dimensional CMR manganite, namely La7/8Sr1/8MnO3, by means of x-ray linear dichroism (XLD). We obtained, for the first time, rather strong indications that the coherently distorted Jahn-Teller phase in La7/8Sr1/8MnO3 is accompanied by a predominantly cross type (x2-z2) / (y2-z2) orbital ordering. In addition to manganites the double perovskite Sr2FeMoO6 the combined study by means of x-ray spectroscopies, magnetic measurements and theoretical band structure calculations could resolve some points discussed controversially in the literature. Both, paramagnetic measurements as well as core level spectroscopy of the Fe 2p, Fe 3s and the Mo 3d states suggest a mixed iron valence state involving around 30% Fe3+- Mo5+ and 70% Fe2+ - Mo6+ states in highly ordered Sr2FeMoO6. XPS valence band studies reveal that the Fe 3d states are not extremely localized, and we find evidence that charge transfer between Fe 3d and O 2p states plays an essential role.
