Komparace athénské demokracie s politickýmí názory Platóna a Aristotela / The Comparison of Athenian democracy with the political views of Plato and Aristotle.Mirvald, Lukáš January 2021 (has links)
In my thesis I analyse the issue of democracy in antiquity. Research includes practice and theory. At the beginning I will focus on the analysis of the real functioning of democracy in the Athenian polis (how the idea of democracy arose, what were the political institutions, who had or did not have a share in the controlling of the polis etc.). Emphasis is placed on the history of Athens in the 6th to 4th centuries BC. The core of this chapter is the time of Pericles when Athenian democracy reached its peak. The second part of the thesis describes how democracy was viewed by leading ancient thinkers - Plato and his disciple Aristotle. One of the aims of this thesis is to understand their criticism of the democratic establishment and what alternatives governments offer as better. The third part of the thesis is a comparison between political reality in ancient Athens and political theory in the works of Plato and Aristotle.

Thomas Hobbes and Leviathan : Homo Naturalis and the Incarnation of Aristotle's Zoon PolitikonGustavsson, Jacob January 2022 (has links)
Thomas Hobbes first law of nature states that 'each rational man shall and ought to endeavor peace'. Simultaneously, Hobbes first law of nature is perhaps the antithesis of his conception of man in nature (homo naturalis), where man is simply defined as an animal residing in an amoral and arbitrary environment in which every notion of "right and wrong" are connected to the individual's capacity for self-maximizing rationality. In turn, the social creature - zoon politikon - is the contradiction of Hobbes' homo naturalis: he is the impersonated restraint of the impulses and passions that leads him away from a life of an unending state of war into a moral and social community. Hobbes' social and moral creature is the result of a transition involving the creation of a social contract between an arbiter and the masses, binding them together in a shared fate: the excommunication of war and fear into the installment of peace and security. This essay addresses the transition of Hobbes conception of homo naturalis to his implicit understanding of zoon politikon; the transition from the amoral to the moral man. What implications does such a transition have for the egoistic-rational creature? What political and moral obligations are to be found between man and man, and between man and state? Finally, what is rational for the social creature to demand of the state?

[en] PERCEPTION IN ARISTOTLE: AÍSTHÉSIS, MNEME AND EMPEIRÍA / [pt] PERCEPÇÃO EM ARISTÓTELES: AÍSTHÉSIS, MNEME E EMPEIRÍAANNELYZE DE ARAUJO REIS 19 May 2022 (has links)
[en] The current research s first exploratory impulse was to look into the role of language in the aristotelian philosophical approach, with the assumption that language would be the means by which we express knowledge acquired from perception. As perception is always of the particular, language would play a crucial role in the construction of a generalizing apprehension of the real and, therefore, would make systematic knowledge possible. However, such a premise assumes that perception would be configured as a means of access to an external reality, or the real, in other words. Thus, in the course of the investigation, it became necessary to establish what the aristotelian understanding of perception is, if it is possible to know through perceptual processes and if, according to Aristotle, it is possible to say that there is the real to be apprehended through perception. In this sense, the current dissertation is dedicated to investigating the process of knowledge apprehension through the path: aísthēsis, mneme and empeiría, in order to answer those questions.

SENTIO, ERGO SUM : JAG UPPLEVER, DÄRFÖR ÄR JAG. / SENTIO, ERGO SUM : I EXPERIENCE THEREFORE I AM.Widerberg, Maja January 2022 (has links)

[en] THE PROBLEM OF AKRASIA IN PLATO AND ARISTOTLE / [pt] O PROBLEMA DA AKRASIA EM PLATÃO E ARISTÓTELESDANIEL SIMAO NASCIMENTO 11 September 2013 (has links)
problema tenha sido Aristóteles (EN VII.1), a primeira discussão filosófica acerca
sentido ele a aceita.
[en] Although to this day some doubt remains about whether we can find, in
Greek philosophy, a concept that corresponds to the latin notion of the will,
nobody seems to question the fact that the greek philosophers were the first to try
to understand the phenomenon which today we call weakness of the will – and
that they called akrasia.
Although the first philosopher employed this term when discussing the
problem was Aristotle (EN VII.1), the first philosophical discussion about akrasia
is to be found in Plato’s Protagoras. In this dialogue, the phenomenon that is
discussed is called being defeated by pleasures. As we know, Socrates denies
that such a thing is even possible and affirms his famous paradox according to
which nobody errs willingly.
This works main goal is to compare the problem of akrasia in Plato and
Aristotle, so that we can better understand something which is still a matter of great
dissent: how much of the Socratic explanation of the phenomenon is accepted by
Aristotle and how much of it is discarded? In order to answer this question, Ive
tried to highlight the differences that separate the authors in what concerns both
their description of akrasia and the way they conceive the voluntary act. Ive also
dedicated the introduction of the work to a discussion about two plays of Euripides,
Hyppolitus and Medea, with the objective of shedding some light in what we might
perhaps call the pre-philosophical roots of the problem.

[en] CONCEIVABILITY, POSSIBILITY AND LOGIC / [pt] CONCEPTIVIDADE, POSSIBILIDADE E LÓGICAOCTAVIO MOREIRA GUIMARAES LOPES 31 October 2005 (has links)
fundamentalmente ligada à faculdade do entendimento, e
pouco relacionada com
nossa capacidade de imaginar ou conceber. Desta forma, sob
isto, primeiramente
examinamos sobre bases autônomas o princípio da
conceptividade, segundo o
qual a proposição p é concebível se e semente se p é
possível. Investigamos as
principais posições contemporâneas contra e a favor deste
princípio e chegamos a
primeiramente codificou a
lógica de proposições categóricas, e Frege, quando
elaborou a lógica funcional e
argumentos.
examinamos a lógica e
[en] Logic is seen today as a mathematical science
fundamentally linked to the faculty
of understanding, unrelated to our capacity of imagining
or conceiving. Under the
label psychologism, one usually considers any association
between logic and
conceivability (or imagination) as spurious and misled.
This doctoral thesis has as
its goal showing that, contrarily to what is ordinarily
thought, there is in logic,
understood as a science, an undeniable methodological
employment of the faculty
of conceivability or imagination. In order to show this,
we firstly examine the
conceivability principle (the proposition p is conceivable
if and only if p is
possible) on autonomous basis. We examine the main
contemporary positions
against and in favor of this principle and come to a
qualified version of the
principle, which we purport to be free of counterexamples;
it will have been
shown, therefore, that, under certain circumstances, there
is an essential relation
between modal concepts (possibility, necessity,
contingency, impossibility) and
our faculty of conceiving or imagining: whatever is
conceivable is possible - even
though it is not always true that whatever is
inconceivable is impossible.
Secondly, we show how the conceivability principle was an
irreplaceable tool in
the hands of the great pioneers of logic, in a very well
delimited task: codifying
new logical languages. Therefore, we hold that Aristotle,
as he firstly codified the
logic of categorical propositions, and Frege, as he
elaborated quantified functional
logic, were bound to employ conceivability as a basic
parameter so as to examine
the expressive correctness of the language they were
codifying and determine the
validity of various propositions and arguments. In order
to make clear the place of
conceivability in logic, we examine Aristotle´s Frege´s
logic and epistemology
and find concrete elements indicating the employment of
this notion in the
primitive context of logical codification we have
mentioned. We emphasize that,
in the context in which these authors were working, there
were no epistemological
options other than the resource to the conceivability
principle.

Previous issue date: 2010-05-13 / Introduction: Phrônesis, word that comes from the Greek, meaning the exercise of a
capacity to apply truths about what is good for a certain type of person, people in
general, in certain situations, for themselves in particular occasions. This term can
be brought by prudence in which is a virtue that when applied to the concrete case
has a human character by being contingent and variable depending on individuals
and circumstances. Phrônesis was used by Aristotle during the construction of his
theory of justice. In the Aristotelian prudence, all theoretical significance is removed
in order to avoid more than one type of moral being, capable of orienting the action in
the path which is considered fair. Aristoteles insisted on the vocation practice of this
term and concerned himself in the direction which the human actions considered fair
and virtuous should be guided with prudence General Objective: Analyze the
Aristotelian prudence as a determinant factor of obtaining justice. Specific
Objectives: Identify the direction of the Aristotelian justice; analyze the Aristotelian
prudence present in the Ethics to Nicomacus; and verify in what way the prudence is
a determinant in justice practice. Methodology: bibliographic and qualitative
research. Expected Results: The demonstration that the prudence is not only an
important criterion of justice, since is considered a sort of moral sense, presumes
that all decisions that have as the end justice should observe the practical
Justiça. Objetivos Específicos: Identificar os sentidos da justiça aristotélica;
