The predator-victim ambivalence of the female monster in Wolwedans in die Skemer (2012) / Wendy Elizabeth Foster

Foster, Wendy Elizabeth January 2015 (has links)
This dissertation explores how the concepts of ambivalence, horror, monsters and mise-en-scène can be used to interpret the ambivalent predator-monster/victim relationship of the characters Sonja Daneel, Adele and Maggie Joubert from the film Wolwedans in die Skemer (2012). In doing so, this dissertation investigates how Noël Carroll’s The Philosophy of Horror or Paradoxes of the Heart (1990) and Jeffery Cohen's Monster Theory (1996) can be used as a theoretical foundation to analyse and interpret the characters Sonja, Adele and Maggie. This research argues that within the horror genre, viewers are presented with two classic characters, namely that of the monster (often male) and the victim (often female), each with their own set of characteristics and traits that set them apart. However, I postulate that in Wolwedans in die Skemer these characteristics and traits are often blurred into one character, giving rise to a monster-victim ambivalence. This study also investigates the connection that the characters Sonja, Adele and Maggie have in relation to werewolves and to the characters of the Little Girl and the Wolf from the Red Riding Hood tales. Jones (2012:140) proposes that the wolf is the projection of her own inner predator - this suggests that the Little Girl and the Wolf can be seen as one character, a combination of victim and predator. Red Riding Hood can possibly be interpreted as recognising her inner self as the Wolf or a werewolf. A werewolf is a person who has been transformed, by force of will and desire, from a human (victim) into a predatory and monstrous wolf-like state. When women are werewolves, the traditional coding of horror - monster as male, victim as female, no longer applies. The "female werewolves" of Wolwedans in die Skemer each become, in some way, Little Red Riding Hood, Wolf, and Woodcutter fused into one. By analysing the characters Sonja, Adele and Maggie through the lens of the monster and victim with regards to the concepts of ambivalence, horror, and miseen- scène, it becomes clear that the roles of the monster and the victim in Wolwedans in die Skemer dissolve into one body, creating an ambivalent fluctuation between the two. / MA (History of art), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Baril, David January 2014 (has links)

Pettersson, Johan January 2017 (has links)
This essay explores men´s relationship to training through a phenomenological understanding of bodily comfort and orientation. This is done by a survey performed with three men who identified themselves as feminist and continuingly exercise their bodies. The phenomenological understanding is then broadened by coupling the men's experiences to contemporary research on masculinity. By employing theories surrounding Sara Ahmed's view on phenomenology and Raewyn Connell's hegemonic masculinity, the essay shows that the men's bodily comfort and orientation is affected by the fact that they exercise. Through their training they construct bodies that in some aspects correlates with the conception of being in form, being fit. It also correlates with normative conceptions of masculine bodies. The conception of the fit body and masculinity is also explored through a view on norms of society. The feeling of incorporating social norms increases the men's bodily comfort, and give them a sense of being in control of their bodies. That they identified as feminist shows that they have an ambivalent relationship to their practitioner.

Amor e ódio no caso clínico do Homem dos Lobos / Love and hate in Wolfman\'s case

Grajew, Miriam 07 December 2018 (has links)
The study concerning the impasse which appears in analysis may contribute to a metapsychological reflection which in turn offers elements for a clinical experience, especially in cases where important points pertinent to psychic constitutional issues are present. This allows for a greater knowledge of our basic functioning. Our hypothesis is that the impasse takes place only with the concomitant influence of the patient\'s transference and the countertransferential reactions of the analyst. In studying the case of the Wolfman, one can observe the strong presence of love and hate in the relationship between the analyst and the patient. The repetition of these sentiments were not sufficiently worked through and what remained was a strong tie between the Wolfman and Freud, which lasted for a long time, even after the analysis was considered ended. The implicit feminine position in the homosexual desire with a man astonished Freud who understood that this attitude was the main cause for the resistance in analysis, without considering the possibility that the Wolfman had a desire for castration implicit in the feminine position. Likewise, the incestuous desire for the mother, evident in the bisexuality of the patient, was not sufficiently worked through during the analysis. In exchange, what was established was a relationship based on fascination and idealization, with no space for lack, thus invoking defenses through isolation, omnipotence and the pursuit for the double, in face of archaic anguishes of extinction. There was a passionate alienation in relation to Freud which was the cause of their difficult separation. With the second analyst, Brunswick, who acted as a mediator between the two men, the impasse was broken to a certain degree, and the Wolfman could minimally worked through the attachment and transferences of love and hate, giving him certain independence and the possibility for a way out via sublimation

Ambivalence and the work of hope : anticipating futures in a Serbian industrial town

Jovanović, Deana January 2016 (has links)
This study is based on fourteen months of ethnographic fieldwork that I conducted in Bor, a copper-processing town in Eastern Serbia. From the perspectives of “ordinary” people, this dissertation explores the process of post-socialist transformation through ethnography of the interconnections between the town (characterised by mono-structural economy) and the industrial company. After a prosperous period during Yugoslav socialism there was an economic, social, and symbolic decline of the copper-processing company followed by decay of the town and industry during the 1990s. This thesis captures the moment of political promise that brought a new horizon of hope for a better life and the promise of economic growth through the revival of the rundown industry. It captures the experiences of people who have had different encounters with existing attempts to revitalise and transform everyday life, in the context of the mutual revival of the company and the town. In this thesis I analyse people’s anticipations of their futures as well as the practices they invested in maintaining and realising their hopes (which I call the “work of hope”). I argue that ambivalence, which consisted of simultaneous coupling of hope with various other competing and conflicting sets of dispositions, such as risk, despair, entrapment, dismay, anxiety, frustration, and so on, was reflected in how people’s futures were imagined, conveyed, and lived towards. The first part of the dissertation focuses on how material objects, such as the renovated sites, the district heating, and pollution, appeared in my interlocutors’ work of hope and in their anticipations of futures. In parallel with this, the second part focuses on how the temporality of waiting and the work of hope played out in relation to gender, age, and generation among the people with whom I spent time. I argue that my interlocutors’ anticipations of futures and their work of hope resulted in reproduction of inequalities (in terms of gender, age, and class). I argue that in their encounter with the omnipresent industrial company that pervaded and constructed everyday lives, and through their work of hope, the state was encountered and reproduced and the social contract between the company, the town and the people was maintained. The analysis of how people in the industrial town of Bor played with and sought to reconcile ambivalence feeds into existing debates about how hope is read through, produced through, and articulated in relation to the material and social landscapes.

Ambivalence et énantiosémie

Larue-Tondeur, Josette 18 June 2009 (has links) (PDF)

Sköld, Rita, Sporrong, Camilla January 2008 (has links)
<p>Involuntary childlessness is a big problem around the world. One way to solve the problem is to receive oocytes or semen from a donor. In Sweden, semen donation has been regulated by law since 1985 and oocyte donation since 2003. The aim of this study was to investigate what motivations women and men in Sweden have to donate gametes, if they feel any ambivalence to donate, and to compare if there is any difference in motivation and ambivalence between women and men. Motivation was measured with eight statements based on previous results and clinical experience. Ambivalence was measured with a scale consisting of seven statements that addressed thoughts and feelings about the donation. The participants in the study were donors at some of the seven infertility clinics in Sweden. The dropout rate for the sperm donors was 19 %. For the egg donors the dropout rate was 17 %.. The main result showed that the main motivation for donating oocytes or semen was helping childless couples. The significant differences between women’s and men’s motivations for donating oocytes or semen were that the women were keener to helping others, while the men to a higher extent wanted to do something important, spread their genes and find out about their own fertility. The oocyte and semen donors did not feel any particular ambivalence about the decision to donate, most of them did not find it difficult to make the decision, and they would have been disappointed if they had not been allowed to donate for some reason. The conclusions to be drawn from this study are that once the donors have decided to donate, they don’t feel any particular ambivalence about the donation, and women and men have different motivations to why they are donating, even if the main motivation is the same.</p> / <p>Ofrivillig barnlöshet är ett stort problem världen över.
