The Missa Assumpta est Maria of Marc-Antoine Charpentier / / Assumpta est Maria

Couse, Andrew Jerome January 1989 (has links)
The purpose of this Thesis is to present a modern critical edition of the Missa Assumpta est Maria (H. 11) and the Elevation a 5, sans dessus de violon (H. 251) of Marc-Antoine Charpentier (c. 1634-1704). The Thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter provides an introductory biography of the composer and a general overview of his works. The second chapter deals specifically with the Missa Assumpta est Maria and the Elevation a 5, offering first an investigation of the historical background to these works. This discussion continues with stylistic analyses and is followed by an examination into questions of performance practice that are raised by the music. The chapter is completed with a declaration of editorial principles, critical notes, texts and translations, and a conclusion. The final chapter of the Thesis is comprised of the edited transcriptions of the Missa Assumpta est Maria and the Elevation a 5, sans dessus de violon. Endnotes and bibliography are inserted at the end of chapter two.

Une expérimentation appliquée au cinéma (1915-1928) / André Antoine, director of the reality. An experimentation applied to Cinema (1915-1928)

Billaut, Manon 18 December 2017 (has links)
André Antoine’s place in theatre history is earned through his 1887 founding of the Théâtre-Libre and revolutionizing of modern mise en scène, but it is cinema that occupied the last part of his life as he made eight films between 1915 and 1922 for the Société cinématographique des auteurs et gens de lettres (“Film Society of Authors and Men of Letters”) and then for the Société d’éditions cinématographiques (“Society of Film Editions”), before devoting himself to theatre and film critic in several newspapers. These late years left few traces in film history, and both his films and his critical and theoretical writings remain largely unknown. Inspired by Emile Zola’s naturalist theories, Antoine took to the new art form a rigorous method based on the experience of environment. He clashed with avant-garde trends which were making their way to cinema in the early 1920s. This thesis highlights the experimental value of Antoine’s cinema, which gives a special role to research, observation and experience, by demonstrating the convergence of his special method with practices and discourse animating cinema at the turn of the World War I, a key moment of its legitimation as an art form. This study is based on in-depth analysis of Antoine’s films, his personal archives, production notes, as well as numerous texts he wrote on cinema between 1915 and 1928, the climactic year in the struggle for authorship recognition between Antoine and filmmakers of the First avant-garde.

Édition critique des "Poësies chrestiennes" (1660) d'Antoine Godeau précédée d'une introduction sur la pastorale lyrique et catholique de cet auteur / Edition of the "Poësies Chrestiennes" (1660) by Antoine Godeau with a study of his pastoral and Catholic poetry

Venner, Camille 21 October 2016 (has links)
Antoine Godeau (1605-1672) first published the Poësies Chrestiennes in 1633 in the context of the Catholic Reformation which encouraged spiritual revival. This lyric collection is emblematic of his comprehensive poetic and spiritual work. Godeau became the Bishop of Grasse in 1636 and devoted his poetic gifts to enlightening the readers. This new edition is the latest version of the Poësies Chrestiennes (1660), which is pastoral Catholic verse addressed to the socialites of the time. The versatile poet expressed himself in various forms, registers and topics to convey the Christian dogma and the Bible. The content and the purpose of the book fluctuated. The Poësies chrestiennes was thus a field for experimentation : it became Antoine Godeau's laboratory for all his pastoral and lyric work. The poet defined the principles of a poetry which was based on the conciliation of divine enthusiasm and reason, a poetry where grace and beauty met. The paraphrase of the Scriptures was an opportunity to explore the conciliation of Parnassus and Calvary, as well as the specificity of a classical poetic language in the making, endowing it with gentleness and clarity. Poetry appeared to be the ideal way to instill Christian truths in the heart of the faithful. The religious conversion of secular literary rhetoric prepared the layman to hear the poet-preacher’s vigorous speech. Antoine Godeau tempered his Augustinian anthropology by promoting a life both wordly and pious, in chime with the ideal of Christian “honnêteté”. The poet spiritualized profane aesthetics, which showed his unrelenting desire to adapt his conversion discourse to a public eager to be edified by the “delectare”.

Ezequiel Rojas: Between Utilitarianism and Ideology / Ezequiel Rojas: entre utilitarismo e ideología

Hurtado, Jimena 10 April 2018 (has links)
Political economy played a central role in the construction of the new Republic of Colombia through the influence of Ezequiel Rojas. In his pursuit of theoretical and practical guidance to organize a new society of free individuals pledged to happiness, Rojas looked to political economy for inspiration. However, the sources that Rojas drew on did not belong to the tradition of classical political economy; he based his own approach on other, less traditional sources; namely utilitarianism and ideology. In this text I aim to reconstruct this approach, showing its tensions and contradictions and the way in which Rojas tried to address them through religion.

A cinephile approaching his nostalgia : a circumambulation under the sign of Wong Kar Wai

Tsai, Wen-Sheng 04 July 2018 (has links)
How to conduct a scientific work if the researcher is himself already incurably obsessed by his study material? This question fits in quite well for the present case, since the PhD student is an inveterate lover of Wong Kar Wai’s cinema. In other words, the situation is that of a cinephage-turned-cinephile — extremely conditioned by a living work inescapably defined by an amorous aura — who is trying to find a way out, in a relatively rational way, that is to say, symbolically, to deal with this entanglement as mise en abyme. Two methodological as well as deontological perspectives are thus drawn on, “the personal equation” adapted by C. G. Jung and “the ironic distance” coined by Antoine de Baecque. Hopefully, the writing of this dissertation could be regarded as a circumambulation whose goal is nothing more than its very process which is a nostalgic yearning for the cinema archetype, or, in terms of André Bazin’s idea(l): the myth of total cinema.

Na senda das Noites: \"les quatre talismans\" de Charles Nodier e \'Les mille et une nuits\' / In the path of Nights: \"Les quatre talismans\" by Charles Nodier and Les mille et une nuits.

Christiane Damien Codenhoto 05 October 2007 (has links)
Nights [Alf layla wa-layla] were first translated and published by the French orientalist Antoine Galland in the beginning of the XVIII century. In his translation, Galland not only followed the conception of his time to adapt the literary work to the French taste, but also inserted new stories in its version that didn\'t belong to the original, so that his Les mille et une nuits didn\'t constitute a real portrait of the Arabian Nights. And was this literary work that, finding a triumphal success since its publication, disclosed the stories of Nights to the whole West, and inspired new literary productions. In the XIX century, many Romantic writers searched the enrichment of their imagination in the colors of the oriental wonder; among them is Charles Nodier, who registered his interest for Les mille et une nuits in many of his theoretical and literary texts. In this sense, in the field of the compared literature, it is possible to notice that his tale entitled \"Les quatre talismans\" shares some similarities with the following stories of Les mille et une nuits: prologue- frame, \" Histoire du pêcheur\", \"Histoire du roi grec et du médecin Douban\", \" Histoire de trois calenders fils de rois et de cinq dames de Bagdad\", \"Histoire du seconde calender\", \"Histoire du petit bossu\" , \"Histoire que raconta le marchand chrétien\" - all of them translated by Galland from the Arabian manuscript of Nights - \"Histoire d\'Aladdin\" and \"Histoire de l\'aveugle Baba-Abdalla\"- both absent in Nights, corresponding, therefore, insertions from the orientalist in his version. Comparatively, the analyses of elements, such as narrative technique, the themes and the reasons of the stories, certify not only the appropriation of Nodier from Les mille et une nuits, but also the originality of the author itself, that transforms the model of the stories from Nights and from the narratives inserted by Galland, criating, thus, a peculiar tale.

ETUDE COMPARATIVE DE LA TRADUCTION EN SUEDOIS DE LOTTA RIAD, « ATLANTENS MAGE », AVEC LE TEXTE ORIGINAL : « LE VENTRE DE L’ATLANTIQUE » DE FATOU DIOME A LA LUMIÈRE DES PRINCIPES ÉNONCÉS PAR ANTOINE BERMAN

Månsson, Sarah January 2016 (has links)
The goal of this essay is to compare the Swedish translation of The Atlantics belly by Lotta Riad with the original text using Antoine Berman’s twelve deforming tendencies. Also we will try to present "our translation" to illustrate the Berman’s method. It has to be said that it is not always workable, however, this approach allows a reflexion which stimulates the insight.

Crime, histoire et politique : la représentation du régicide dans le théâtre anglais et français au tournant du XVIe et du XVIIe siècle / Crime, history and politics : to perform regicide in English and French theatre at the turn of sixteenth and seventeenth-century

Coulaud, Sandra 22 June 2017 (has links)
The regicide is a topical crime between the sixteenth and the seventeenth-century. It is an object of many reflections and an actual event for french and english people. In both kingdom, there are debates on this issue while the schism has begun a reality. Because of the controversy, it is possible to speack about régicide as a punishment. Playwrighters perform this problematic subject. Jacques de Fonteny represent the murder of Henri Ird, Claude Billard de Courgenay represent Henri IVrth’s one, Antoine de Montchrestien represent the execution of Marie Stuart, Shakespeare and Marlowe perform the murders of Richard IInd et Edward IInd. A priori, such subject can move the audience. Nevertheless, such a performance isn’t an evidence. How, indeed, can a playwrighter show such an enormous crime during troubled period ? How can he justify the show in a crisis context ? Playwrighters have to consider ideological and aesthetic restrictions, which are sometimes in contradiction, to perform the murder of the sovereign. In many cases, they rewright history. Because the crime is usually ineffective as a politic action, it is effective for dramatic art. Tyranny justify that the prince is murdered. Some moral failures make this one acceptable. And because the king is falling, he appears as a pathetic victim for the spectators. When it is difficult to show the crime scene, the regicide is described by a messenger.

Erasmus Darwin e os seres vivos: concepções de \'evolução\' e herança / Erasmus Darwin and the living beings: conceptions of evolution and inheritance

Pedrita Fernanda Donda 15 February 2016 (has links)
Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802) mainly presented his evolutionary views at the end of the 18th century. However, they were not considered carefully at that time. His grandson, Charles Darwin (1809-1882), in the 6th edition of Origin of species evaluated them in a negative way, comparing them to Lamarcks erroneous conceptions. The aim of this dissertation is firstly to describe Erasmus Darwins conceptions on heredity and evolution considering the context of his time. Besides that, it tries to elucidate the reception received by them was due to a weak proposal or whether they deserved greater consideration. This dissertation comprises an Introduction and five chapters. Chapter 1 discusses Erasmus Darwins life, work and the context in which he presented his ideas. Chapter 2 deals with the conceptions of inheritance and evolution which are present in Zoonomia. Chapter 3 discusses Erasmus view on the transmutation of species in plants. Chapter 4 compares Erasmuss evolutionary conceptions to Lamarcks ones. Chapter 5 tries to answer the questions proposed in the beginning of this research and presents some final remarks concerning the subject. This research leads to the conclusion that the transmutation of species was not the main Erasmus concern. He did not present any empirical foundation of his views related to the subject. This fact, together with the socio-political-religious situation, must have contributed to its reception. Besides that, although there were some similarities between Erasmuss and Lamarcks proposal there were also great differences such as the scope of the research, the space dedicated to its discussion, the foundation provided, among others. Erasmus did not provide a coherent theory of the transmutation of species dealing with since the origin of life to the rise of man, departing from a study of natural history such as Lamarck. In this respect, he only presented a few ideas in works dedicated to other subjects.
