“Cerritos de Índios” - mounds of anthropic origin – are typical formations of some indigenous populations, which inhabited the biome Pampa, in the Southern of South America since the pre-colonial period. This dissertation aimed primarily to map archaeological occurrences of this kind located in the Fragata Lagoon area, in the drainage basin of the Patos Lagoon, between the cities of Pelotas and Capão do Leão. In addition to the survey of archaeological sites, a bibliographic review on the specialized literature about mounds was done, pointing out the divergences and concordances between the several distinct theoretical currents on the subject. Such was done in order to bring forth subsidies to further studies for new interpretations and to understand the theoretical complexity involving the Archeology of the Cerritos. One of the main concerns was also related to the preservation of the archaeological structures threatened nowadays by large ventures promoted by the government, which is usually prioritizing economic interests rather than the cultural heritage. Therefore seeking to give support so that such areas are preserved, as per disposítions provided for in the Brazilian legislation.

Wittmann, Marcus Antonio Schifino January 2018 (has links)
This master's research analyzes the practices of the archaeological science in environmental licensing projects in Rio Grande do Sul. Environmental licensing is a bureaucratic instrument governed by the state to supervise and legislate on engineering works that impact in some way the environment, communities and the Brazilian cultural heritage. Within this practice there are several procedures on which some areas of knowledge are necessary, such as biology, anthropology, geography, geology and archeology. They have to identify and register the characteristics of the area where the enterprise will be made, pointing to the measures to be taken. Archaeology is the steward in this context of the sites and archaeological goods that can be found in the place, deliberating what should be adopted for their preservation in loco or the realization of an archaeological rescue, that is, an archaeological excavation and giving the custody of the material to an institution. Currently the archaeological research in environmental licensing is the predominant field of action of archaeologists in Brazil. Based mainly on the theories and methods of the anthropology of science, technology and bureaucracy we intend to analyze the socio-technical networks that entangle archeology, bureaucracy, state and private initiative, which constitute and are constituted of different entities, such as heritage, archaeological sites and technical reports This research, an ethnography of archaeological practice, embrace interviews with twenty-one archaeologists who work on environmental licensing and the analysis of projects and reports regarding the licensing of several projects in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This outlook encompasses different human and non-human agents who move through the sociotechnical networks of environmental licensing and archeology, such as scientists, technical projects and reports, bureaucrats, their bureaucracies and documents, archaeological sites and heritage, the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN), among others. By regulating scientific practices and linking them to stages of engineering projects, the environmental licensing proves to be a state tool of great political and analytical interest to anthropology and archeology.

The determination of a relative chronology for a surface archeological site using the obsidian hydration dating method

Thomas, Scott Preston 01 January 1981 (has links)
This methodological study is an attempt to develop relative chronologies for surface archaeological sites from the obsidian hydration analysis of waste flake samples. Two sites in southeastern Oregon were selected and their surface components sampled. The results of the obsidian hydration analysis indicate, that with the use of random sampling methods and general geochemical control, a fairly accurate representation of the history of an archaeological surface site can be obtained.

THE MOUNTAINS AND ROCKS ARE FOREVER: LITHICS AND LANDSCAPES OF SKWXWÚ7MESH UXWUMIXW

Reimer, Rudy 04 1900 (has links)

This dissertation contributes to Indigenous archaeology, particularly along the Northwest Coast, the Coast Salish region and the territory of the Squamish Nation. I examine the regional archaeological sequence and provide an Indigenous perspective of time and space of Squamish Nation territory. Closer examination of this region’s archaeological record focuses on the occurrence of suitable igneous tool stone sources and their use over the past 10,000 years. A full understanding of these lithic sources comes from three different perspectives Squamish Nation culture, the archaeological and geological records.

I propose that lithic sources are important places of the Squamish Nation cultural landscape and that the distributions of certain material types is linked to Squamish Nation place names and oral histories. Expanding this concept outward, I consider the distribution of the occurrence of these materials from 25 archaeological sites ranging from sea level ocean shore to mountainous alpine contexts. I then examine lithic source materials and artifacts from these sites on a visual and chemical basis (X-Ray Fluorescence) to illustrate the varying importance of certain lithic materials across Squamish Nation territory. Resulting analysis demonstrates that these materials have varying spatial and temporal distributions that relate to predominant themes of Squamish Nation oral history, concepts of Transformation and Mythical Beings. Material distributions, place names, oral history related to the region’s archaeological record are discussed under different theoretical frameworks of the Northwest Coast building from culture history, processual, post processual, and humanist perspectives cumulating at a Indigenous perspective of lithic sources and flaked stone artifact distributions.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Detecting trends in the prediction of the buried past: A review of geophysical techniques in archaeology.

Gaffney, Christopher F. January 2008 (has links)
No / Geophysical survey techniques are a highly visible part of the scientific toolkit that is now used by archaeologists. In this paper, the history of the use of geophysical techniques in archaeology will be discussed, as will significant research themes associated with the most widely used prospecting devices. It is apparent that while the use of geophysical techniques is at an all-time high, there are many key areas where prospecting is rapidly developing. Some of the advances relate to fundamental aspects of the techniques, while others dictate how we undertake survey in the future. There is a movement away from pre-gridded survey areas towards real-time GPS for navigation. This allows greater integration, or fusion, of disparate data sources using visualization techniques derived from associated disciplines. The analysis of landscapes has become a major component of the application of new technology and there are many challenges to be tackled, including how to analyse and interpret significant archaeology within large-scale, data-rich, multi-technique investigations. The reflective nature of the review acknowledges the important role of Archaeometry in the development of archaeological geophysics.

Etude de droit comparé, France, Etats-Unis / The ownership of archaeological resources - A comparative study - France, United States

Denolle, Alice 10 January 2013 (has links)
France and the United States have both recognized the importance of preserving archaeological resources against any damage or destruction through legal protection so that their use by present generations and their transfer to future generations may be ensured. This importance is reflected through the existence of a public interest in the preservation ofarchaeological resources. The public interest is rooted in different values which are assigned to archaeological resources and which may be referred to as the cognitive value, the identity value, the aesthetic value and the economic value. In both countries the cognitive value appears to be the cornerstone of protective legislation.Even though the United States and France recognize that there is a public interest in preserving archaeological resources, the ownership of archaeological resources is still deeply governed by common law rules, according to which archaeological resources are seen as mere property. This dichotomy proves to be a source of tension between two competing interests:the public interest which lies in archaeological resources protection on the one hand, and the private interest, expressed through ownership, on the other hand. The legal definition of protected archaeological resources lies therefore at the forefront of the issue. In both countries, there is no uniform status of archaeological resources. However, protective legislation recognizes the very specificity of these resources, developing therefore specific protective schemes. The two legal systems tend to favor public ownership, the state being seen has the most suitable owner capable of ensuring preservation. But private ownership appears to be a strong opposition public ownership has to face. However, private ownership of archaeological resources does not necessarily equal lack of protection. No special property status has thus been implemented in either countries. Conflicts arising between preservation and ownership of archaeological resources in the current protective systems could therefore be resolved by drawing the consequences of the specificity of archaeological resources into the protective schemes.

Urban Archaeological Issues And Resources In Izmir Historic City Centre: An Exploratory Case Study

Belge, Burak 01 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
In Turkey, the majority of the historic city centres have been continuously occupied since early ages onwards and where still occupation exists. The multi-layered structure of historic centres both can indicate the historical continuity of cities and enhance urban consciousness, if urban archaeological resources are handled effectively into planning process. However, the recent policies and strategies don&amp / #8217 / t allow the handling of urban archaeological resources, especially invisible sub-soil resources, into planning and decision-making process. In this thesis, it is aimed to formulate a basic methodological framework for the handling of urban archaeological resources into planning process of historic city centres in Turkey. Therefore, the study is handled in two parts / a conceptual methodological framework part and an exploratory case study. In the conceptual part, a basic equation is studied to research the factors on the conservation and evaluation of real urban archaeological potential. Then, the methodological framework is examined in detail in izmir Historic City Centre that has been inhabited since 324 B.C. Consequently, the terms of equi-property areas, which are used to define ideal potential of archaeological resources, and urban archaeological character zones, which are described as the basic units of planning and conservation policies, are developed to determine exact management strategies for urban archaeological resources.

Conservación in situ en el Proyecto Arqueología Antártica. Desafíos bajo el paralelo 60°S

de Alkmim Radicchi, Gerusa 26 April 2022 (has links)
Archéologie et inventaire du patrimoine national : recherches sur les systèmes d'inventaire en Europe et Méditerranée occidentale (France, Espagne, Grande-Bretagne, Tunisie) : comparaisons et perspectives / Archaeology and national heritage record : research on record systems in Europe and western Méditerranée (France, Spain, Great-Britain, Tunisia) : comparisons and prospects

Ournac, Perrine 28 September 2011 (has links)
Compare archaeological heritage record systems in France, Spain, Great-Britain and Tunisie consists in studying organization and results of these records, at the national level, or, where it does not exist, at the regional level. The database design, aimed at protecting and promoting archaeological resource, has been identified in each country. The first inventories, the legal and institutional structures, the condition of accessibility, and the current frame of archaeological records have been studied. Analysis shows, after describing and testing these case, that there are circumstances conditioning: the existence of a national archaeological record, but also, the level of accessibility of data maintained in these records.
