Physical Layer Security vs. Network Layer Secrecy: Who Wins on the Untrusted Two-Way Relay Channel?

We consider the problem of secure communications in a Gaussian two-way relay network where two nodes exchange confidential messages only via an untrusted relay. The relay is assumed to be honest but curious, i.e., an eavesdropper that conforms to the system rules and applies the intended relaying scheme. We analyze the achievable secrecy rates by applying network coding on the physical layer or the network layer and compare the results in terms of complexity, overhead, and efficiency. Further, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the respective approaches.

Prediction of the number of weekly covid-19 infections : A comparison of machine learning methods

The thesis two-folded problem aim was to identify and evaluate candidate Machine Learning (ML) methods and performance methods, for predicting the weekly number of covid-19 infections. The two-folded problem aim was created from studying public health studies where several challenges were identified. One challenge identified was the lack of using sophisticated and hybrid ML methods in the public health research area. In this thesis a comparison of ML methods for predicting the number of covid-19 weekly infections has been performed. A dataset taken from the Public Health Agency in Sweden consisting of 101weeks divided into a 60 % training set and a 40% testing set was used in the evaluation. Five candidate ML methods have been investigated in this thesis called Support Vector Regressor (SVR), Long Short Term Memory (LSTM), Gated Recurrent Network (GRU), Bidirectional-LSTM (BI-LSTM) and LSTM-Convolutional Neural Network (LSTM-CNN). These methods have been evaluated based on three performance measurements called Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and R2. The evaluation of these candidate ML resulted in the LSTM-CNN model performing the best on RMSE, MAE and R2.

Les risques psychosociaux sont un enjeu de santé publique majeur, en particulier à cause des troubles qu'ils peuvent engendrer : stress, changements d'humeurs, burn-out, etc. Bien que le diagnostic de ces troubles doive être réalisé par un professionel, l'Affective Computing peut apporter une contribution en améliorant la compréhension des phénomènes. L'Affective Computing (ou Informatique Affective) est un domaine pluridisciplinaire, faisant intervenir des concepts d'Intelligence Artificielle, de psychologie et de psychiatrie, notamment. Dans ce travail de recherche, on s'intéresse à deux éléments pouvant faire l'objet de troubles : l'état émotionnel et l'état dépressif des individus.Le concept d'émotion couvre un très large champ de définitions et de modélisations, pour la plupart issues de travaux en psychiatrie ou en psychologie. C'est le cas, par exemple, du circumplex de Russell, qui définit une émotion comme étant la combinaison de deux dimensions affectives, nommées valence et arousal. La valence dénote le caractère triste ou joyeux d'un individu, alors que l'arousal qualifie son caractère passif ou actif. L'évaluation automatique des états émotionnels a suscité, dans la dernière décénie, un regain d'intérêt notable. Des méthodes issues de l'Intelligence Artificielle permettent d'atteindre des performances intéressantes, à partir de données capturées de manière non-invasive, comme des vidéos. Cependant, il demeure un aspect peu étudié : celui des intensités émotionnelles, et de la possibilité de les reconnaître. Dans cette thèse, nous avons exploré cet aspect au moyen de méthodes de visualisation et de classification pour montrer que l'usage de classes d'intensités émotionnelles, plutôt que de valeurs continues, bénéficie à la fois à la reconnaissance automatique et à l'interprétation des états.Le concept de dépression connaît un cadre plus strict, dans la mesure où c'est une maladie reconnue en tant que telle. Elle atteint les individus sans distinction d'âge, de genre ou de métier, mais varie en intensité ou en nature des symptômes. Pour cette raison, son étude tant au niveau de la détection que du suivi, présente un intérêt majeur pour la prévention des risques psychosociaux.Toutefois, son diagnostic est rendu difficile par le caractère parfois anodin des symptômes et par la démarche souvent délicate de consulter un spécialiste. L'échelle de Beck et le score associé permettent, au moyen d'un questionnaire, d'évaluer la sévérité de l'état dépressif d'un individu. Le système que nous avons développé est capable de reconnaître automatiquement le score dépressif d'un individu à partir de vidéos. Il comprend, d'une part, un descripteur visuel spatio-temporel bas niveau qui quantifie les micro et les macro-mouvements faciaux et, d'autre part, des méthodes neuronales issues des sciences cognitives. Sa rapidité autorise des applications de reconnaissance des états dépressifs en temps réel, et ses performances sont intéressantes au regard de l'état de l'art. La fusion des modalités visuelles et auditives a également fait l'objet d'une étude, qui montre que l'utilisation de ces deux canaux sensoriels bénéficie à la reconnaissance des états dépressifs.Au-delà des performances et de son originalité, l'un des points forts de ce travail de thèse est l'interprétabilité des méthodes. En effet, dans un contexte pluridisciplinaire tel que celui posé par l'Affective Computing, l'amélioration des connaissances et la compréhension des phénomènes étudiés sont des aspects majeurs que les méthodes informatiques sous forme de "boîte noire" ont souvent du mal à appréhender. / Psychosocial risks are a major public health issue, because of the disorders they can trigger : stress, mood swings, burn-outs, etc. Although propoer diagnosis can only be made by a healthcare professionnel, Affective Computing can make a contribution by improving the understanding of the phenomena. Affective Computing is a multidisciplinary field involving concepts of Artificial Intelligence, psychology and psychiatry, among others. In this research, we are interested in two elements that can be subject to disorders: the emotional state and the depressive state of individuals.The concept of emotion covers a wide range of definitions and models, most of which are based on work in psychiatry or psychology. A famous example is Russell's circumplex, which defines an emotion as the combination of two emotional dimensions, called valence and arousal. Valence denotes an individual's sad or joyful character, while arousal denotes his passive or active character. The automatic evaluation of emotional states has generated a significant revival of interest in the last decade. Methods from Artificial Intelligence allow to achieve interesting performances, from data captured in a non-invasive manner, such as videos. However, there is one aspect that has not been studied much: that of emotional intensities and the possibility of recognizing them. In this thesis, we have explored this aspect using visualization and classification methods to show that the use of emotional intensity classes, rather than continuous values, benefits both automatic recognition and state interpretation.The concept of depression is more strict, as it is a recognized disease as such. It affects individuals regardless of age, gender or occupation, but varies in intensity or nature of symptoms. For this reason, its study, both at the level of detection and monitoring, is of major interest for the prevention of psychosocial risks.However, his diagnosis is made difficult by the sometimes innocuous nature of the symptoms and by the often delicate process of consulting a specialist. The Beck's scale and the associated score allow, by means of a questionnaire, to evaluate the severity of an individual's state of depression. The system we have developed is able to automatically recognize an individual's depressive score from videos. It includes, on the one hand, a low-level visual spatio-temporal descriptor that quantifies micro and macro facial movements and, on the other hand, neural methods from the cognitive sciences. Its speed allows applications for real-time recognition of depressive states, and its performance is interesting with regard to the state of the art. The fusion of visual and auditory modalities has also been studied, showing that the use of these two sensory channels benefits the recognition of depressive states.Beyond performance and originality, one of the strong points of this thesis is the interpretability of the methods. Indeed, in a multidisciplinary context such as that of Affective Computing, improving knowledge and understanding of the studied phenomena is a key point that usual computer methods implemeted as "black boxes" can't deal with.

Help Document Recommendation System

Help documents are important in an organization to use the technology applications licensed from a vendor. Customers and internal employees frequently use and interact with the help documents section to use the applications and know about the new features and developments in them. Help documents consist of various knowledge base materials, question and answer documents and help content. In day- to-day life, customers go through these documents to set up, install or use the product. Recommending similar documents to the customers can increase customer engagement in the product and can also help them proceed without any hurdles. The main aim of this study is to build a recommendation system by exploring different machine-learning techniques to recommend the most relevant and similar help document to the user. To achieve this, in this study a hybrid-based recommendation system for help documents is proposed where the documents are recommended based on similarity of the content using content-based filtering and similarity between the users using collaborative filtering. Finally, the recommendations from content-based filtering and collaborative filtering are combined and ranked to form a comprehensive list of recommendations. The proposed approach is evaluated by the internal employees of the company and by external users. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is feasible and provides an effective way to recommend help documents.

Napeuat tipatshimitishuat : récits d’hommes autochtones sur l’arrêt de la violence en contexte conjugal

La prévalence et la persistance de la violence en contexte conjugal sont préoccupantes dans les communautés autochtones (Brassard et al., 2011, 2015). En effet, les hommes (54 %) et les femmes (61 %) autochtones sont plus susceptibles d’être victimes de violence en contexte conjugal que les allochtones (36 % et 44 %, respectivement) (Cotter, 2021). La présente étude vise à comprendre comment les hommes autochtones mettent fin à la violence en contexte conjugal. D’une part, l’objectif est d’explorer le sens donné à l’arrêt de la violence en contexte conjugal. D’autre part, l’étude s’intéresse aux récits et aux processus de bifurcation vers cet arrêt de la violence. Des entretiens qualitatifs ont été menés auprès de six hommes innus et innus-naskapis ayant vécu de la violence bidirectionnelle ou unidirectionnelle. Les résultats démontrent que la plupart des hommes identifient les contextes coloniaux, communautaires et familiaux comme des sources de la violence en contexte conjugal. L’intersection entre un contexte d’épuisement et de déstabilisation crée un environnement propice aux processus de bifurcation vers l’arrêt de la violence en contexte conjugal. Trois types de processus de bifurcation sont développés, mettant en évidence différentes conceptions de l’arrêt de la violence : 1) un processus « spontané, mais inachevé », 2) un processus « constant et efficient » et 3) un processus « mouvementé et abouti ». Ces processus impliquent des apprentissages sur le passé, la violence et la communauté pour développer une posture non-violente. Souvent accompagnés de diverses sources de soutien, les hommes résolvent les sources de la violence afin d’apaiser leurs souffrances et ainsi réagir différemment aux expériences éprouvantes. / The prevalence and persistence of violence within the conjugal context in Indigenous communities are concerning (Brassard et al., 2012, 2015). In fact, Indigenous men (54%) and women (61%) are more likely to be victims of violence within the conjugal context than non-Indigenous people (36% and 44%, respectively) (Cotter, 2021). This study aims to understand how Indigenous men end violence within the conjugal context. On the one hand, the objective is to explore the meaning given to ending violence within the conjugal context. On the other hand, the study focuses on the narratives and bifurcation processes towards ending violence. Qualitative interviews were conducted with six Innu and Innu-Naskapi men who had experienced bidirectional or unidirectional violence. Findings show that most men identify colonial, community, and family contexts as sources of violence within the conjugal context. The intersection between a context of exhaustion and destabilization creates an environment conducive to the bifurcation processes towards ending violence within the conjugal context. Three types of bifurcation processes are proposed, highlighting different conceptions of violence cessation: 1) a “spontaneous, but incomplete” process, 2) a “constant and efficient” process and 3) a “hectic and thorough” process. These processes involve learning about the past, violence and the community, in order to develop a non-violent posture. Often accompanied by various sources of support, men resolve the sources of violence to alleviate their suffering and thus react differently to distressing experiences.

Silicon-Based PALNA Transmit/Receive Circuits for Integrated Millimeter Wave Phased Arrays

Phased array element RF front ends typically use single pole double throw (SPDT) switches or circulators with high isolation to prevent leakage of transmit energy into the receiver circuits. However, as phased-array designs scale to the millimeter-wave range, with high degrees of integration, the physical size and performance degradations associated with switches and circulators can present challenges in meeting system performance and size/weight/power (SWAP) requirements. This work demonstrates a loss-aware methodology for analysis and design of switchless transmit/receive (T/R) circuits. The methodology provides design insights and a practical, generally applicable approach for solving the multi-variable optimization problem of switchless power amplifier/low-noise amplifier (PALNA) matching networks, which present optimal matching impedances to both the power amplifier (PA) and the low noise amplifier (LNA) while maximizing power transfer efficiency and minimizing dissipative losses in each (transmit or receive) mode of operation. Three PALNA example designs at W-band are presented in this dissertation, each following a distinct design methodology. The first example design in 32SOI CMOS leverages PA and LNA circuits that already include 50 Ω matching networks at both input and output. The second example design in 8XP SiGe develops the PA and LNA circuits and integrates the PA output and LNA input matching networks into the PALNA matching network that connects the PA and the LNA. The third design in 32SOI CMOS leverages the loss-aware PALNA design methodology to develop a PALNA that achieves simulated maximum power added efficiency of 18 % in transmit and noise figure of 7.5 dB in receive at 94 GHz, which is beyond the published state-of-art for T/R circuits. In addition, for comparison purposes, this dissertation also presents an efficient, switch-based T/R circuit design in 32SOI CMOS technology, which achieves a simulated maximum power added efficiency of 15 % in transmit and noise figure of 6.5 dB in receive at 94 GHz, which is also beyond the published state-of-art for T/R circuits. / Doctor of Philosophy / In military and commercial applications, phased arrays are devices primarily used to achieve focusing and steering of transmitted or received electromagnetic energy. Phased arrays consist of many elements, each with an ability to both transmit and receive radio frequency (RF) signals. Each element incorporates a power amplifier (PA) for transmit and a low noise amplifier (LNA) for receive, which are typically connected using a single pole double throw (SPDT) switch or a circulator with high isolation to prevent leakage of transmit energy into the receiver circuits. However, as phased arrays exploit the latest technological advances in circuit integration and their frequencies of operation increase, physical size and performance degradations associated with switches and circulators can present challenges in meeting system performance and size/weight/power (SWAP) requirements. This dissertation provides a loss-aware methodology for analysis and design of switchless transmit/receive (T/R) circuits where the switches and circulators are replaced by carefully designed power amplifier/low-noise amplifier (PALNA) impedance matching networks. In the switchless T/R circuits, the design goals of maximum power efficiency and minimum noise in transmit and receive, respectively, are achieved through impedance matching that is optimal and low-loss in both modes of operation simultaneously. Three distinct PALNA example designs at W-band are presented in this dissertation, each following a distinct design methodology. With each new design, lessons learned are leveraged and design methodologies are enhanced. The first example design leverages already available PA and LNA circuits and connects them using 50 Ω transmission lines whose lengths are designed to guarantee optimum impedance match in receive and transmit mode of operation. The second example design develops new PA and LNA circuits and connects them using 50 Ω transmission lines whose lengths are designed to simultaneously achieve optimum impedance matching for maximum power efficiency in transmit mode of operation and lowest noise in receive mode of operation. The third design leverages a loss-aware PALNA design methodology, a multi-variable optimization procedure, to develop a PALNA that achieves simulated maximum power added efficiency of 18 % in transmit and noise figure of 7.5 dB in receive at 94 GHz, which is beyond the published state-of-art for T/R circuits. In addition, for comparison purposes with the third PALNA design, this dissertation also presents an efficient, switch-based T/R circuit design, which achieves a simulated maximum power added efficiency of 15 % in transmit and noise figure of 6.5 dB in receive at 94 GHz, which is also beyond the published state-of-art for T/R circuits.

La circulation de Fontan dans le traitement des cardiopathies congénitales uni-ventriculaires : Approche clinique, physiopathologique et expérimentale / The Fontan circulation in univentricular congenital heart disease treatment : Clinical, physiopathological and experimental approach

L’intervention de Fontan est une chirurgie palliative pour les cardiopathies congénitales univentriculaire. A long terme, la défaillance cardiaque, l’hypertension artérielle pulmonaire(HTAP) et l’entéropathie exsudative peuvent mener à l’échec tardif du Fontan.Une mise au point clinique a été realisée en se focalisant secondairement sur les patients adultes.L’intérêt de la cavo bipulmonaire (CBP), étape intermédiaire au Fontan, dans certains cas de retours veineux pulmonaires anormaux totaux a été décrite. Afin d’affiner de futures études cliniques, nous avons discuté de l’intérêt du Brain NatriureticPeptide en post opératoire de Fontan. Nous avons démontré la fiabilité d’une nouvelle technologiede l’oxyme´trie de pouls chez des enfants cyanosés et la non fiabilité d’un nouveau dispositifd’impédancemétrie pour le monitorage non invasif du de´bit cardiaque en comparaison avecun cathéter artériel pulmonaire.Un modèle animal viable et chronique de la CBP a été développé. Il a montré que le flux pulsatileantérograde empêche la formation de fistules artério-veineuses pulmonaires (FAVP), améliorel’hématose et atténue le développement de l’HTAP soutenant cliniquement le maintien de ce fluxlors de la création d’une CBP. Par ailleurs, la perte de pulsatilité, en diminuant le contrainte de cisaillement, entraîne unediminution de l’eNOS synthase et une réponse altérée vaso-relaxante dépendante de l'endothélium artérielle pulmonaire. La micropulsatilité limite ces effets délétères. Ces résultats impliquent desthérapies potentielles contre l’HTAP du Fontan, en maintenant un débit pulmonaire accessoire et la modulation pharmaceutique vaso-relaxante non endothélium-dépendante / The Fontan surgery is a palliative surgery for univentricular congenital heart disease. On the longterm, heart failure, pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and exudative enteropathy may lead tothe Fontan failure.A clinical adjustment has been realized by focusing secondarily on adult patients. The advantage, insome cases of total anomalous pulmonary venous return, of the bidirectional cavopulmonary (BCP),which is an intermediate stage of Fontan, has been described.In order to prepare future clinical studies, we have discussed about Brain Natriuretic Peptide inpostoperative Fontan surgery. We have demonstrated the reliability of a new technology of pulseoxymetry in cyanotic children and the unreliability of a new device of impedance for non-invasivemonitoring of cardiac outpout in comparison with pulmonary arterial catheter.A viable chronic animal model of bidirectional cavo-pulmonary (BCP) has been developed. Itshowed that the antegrade pulsatile flow prevents the formation of pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas(PAVMs) ,improves hematosis and attenuates the development of PAH clinically supporting themaintenance of this flow when creating a BCP.Moreover, the loss of pulsatility while reducing the shear stress causes a decrease in e-NOSsynthase and a dependent vaso-relaxing altered response of the pulmonary arterial endothelium. Themicropulsatility limits these deleterious effects. These results imply potential therapies against thePAH of Fontan surgery, maintaining an accessory pulmonary blood flow and the pharmaceuticalvaso-relaxing non-endothelium dependent modulation.

Schedules for Dynamic Bidirectional Simulations on Parallel Computers / Schemata für dynamische bidirektionale Simulationen auf Parallelrechnern

For adjoint calculations, parameter estimation, and similar purposes one may need to reverse the execution of a computer program. The simplest option is to record a complete execution log and then to read it backwards. This requires massive amounts of storage. Instead one may generate the execution log piecewise by restarting the ``forward'' calculation repeatedly from suitably placed checkpoints. This thesis extends the theoretical results of the parallel reversal schedules. First a algorithm was constructed which carries out the ``forward'' calculation and distributes checkpoints in a way, such that the reversal calculation can be started at any time. This approach provides adaptive parallel reversal schedules for simulations where the number of time steps is not known a-priori. The number of checkpoints and processors used is optimal at any time. Further, an algorithm was described which makes is possible to restart the initial computer program during the program reversal. Again, this can be done without any additional computation at any time. Hence, optimal parallel reversal schedules for the bidirectional simulation are provided by this thesis. / Bei der Berechnung von Adjungierten, zum Debuggen und für ähnliche Anwendungen kann man die Umkehr der entsprechenden Programmauswertung verwenden. Der einfachste Ansatz, nämlich das Erstellen einer kompletten Mitschrift der Vorwärtsrechnung, welche anschließend rückwärts gelesen wird, verursacht einen enormen Speicherplatzbedarf. Als Alternative dazu kann man die Mitschrift auch stückweise erzeugen, indem die Programmauswertung von passend gewählten Checkpoints wiederholt gestartet wird. In dieser Arbeit wird die Theorie der optimalen parallelen Umkehrschemata erweitert. Zum einen erfolgt die Konstruktion von adaptiven parallelen Umkehrschemata. Dafür wird ein Algorithmus beschrieben, der es durch die Nutzung von mehreren Prozessen ermöglicht, Checkpoints so zu verteilen, daß die Umkehrung des Programmes jederzeit ohne Zeitverlust erfolgen kann. Hierbei bleibt die Zahl der verwendeten Checkpoints und Prozesse innerhalb der bekannten Optimalitätsgrenzen. Zum anderen konnte für die adaptiven parallelen Umkehrschemata ein Algorithmus entwickelt werden, welcher ein Restart der eigentlichen Programmauswertung basierend auf der laufenden Programmumkehr erlaubt. Dieser Restart kann wieder jederzeit ohne Zeitverlust erfolgen und die entstehenden Checkpointverteilung erfüllen wieder sowohl Optimalitäts- als auch die Adaptivitätskriterien. Zusammenfassend wurden damit in dieser Arbeit Schemata konstruiert, die bidirektionale Simulationen ermöglichen.
