Development of a Biotope Quality Index

Bredenhand, Emile 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: As the world’s human population increases, more pressure is placed on the management of natural resources. In response, we need an efficient means of monitoring, not only the quantity of these resources but also their quality. No comprehensive standard metric has been developed to assess environmental quality of a biotope, or to define the nature and extent of environmental degradation at this spatial scale. Currently in conservation management, various landscapes are being evaluated for spatial heterogeneity, by making use of species surrogates such as species richness, relative abundance, diversity indices and phylogenetic indices, as well as environmental surrogates. These values are then used towards conservation, where those systems with high intrinsic heterogeneity are usually considered more important than those with low heterogeneity at least when given the choice between the two. Yet, the actual quality of the biotopes within the landscapes is rarely taken into consideration. This study therefore develops and tests a Biotope Quality Index (BQI) to study this point in depth. The BQI makes use of arthropod assemblages as bioindicators of the level of disturbance within a biotope. Firstly, I summarize the literature on the concept of environmental health, and define it as “An ecosystem is healthy, if it can sustain an optimal number of species with optimal population sizes and their ecological processes, thus providing and optimal heterogeneous sustainable system with sufficient resources, and indicated adequate resistance when under perturbational stress, but still allowing natural succession to take place” Against this background, I then review the use of certain Arthropoda as bioindicators, as arthropods are small, mobile, environmentally sensitive, easily sampled, and readily available. These features together make arthropods good subjects for testing the BQI. I then compare the BQI with diversity indices currently used as surrogates of biotope quality. The outcome was that the BQI stood out as a significantly better indicator than the currently available indices for assessing environmental quality of a biotope. Furthermore, during the selection process, I also tested the use of guilds for BQI evaluation, and found that the scavenger (represented by Formicidae) and decomposer (represented by Collembola) guilds were the most significant. The effect of seasonality was also tested. I found the best results with the BQI were when data are pooled from all seasons of the year. A case study, making use of the BQI evaluation, was conducted at a site in the Cape Floristic Region, South Africa (Jonkershoek Valley). BQI results suggested that the agricultural management and tourism within the locality might have an effect on biotope quality. This study has shown that use of the BQI is a useful and practical management tool for evaluating environmental quality of a biotope towards conservation management.

Mapping Carbon Storage and Potential Bioenergy Production in Södertälje Using High-resolution Biotope Database

Åkerström, Lisa January 2022 (has links)
Global warming is caused by the human induced increase of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) in the atmosphere. GHG emissions need to be reduced, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil sources ceased to mitigate global warming. Energy production and use is a main contributor to fossil sourced emissions in Europe. Sweden has a high part renewable power production but not completely, to have a 100% renewable power production by 2040 is a goal set by Swedish government. By 2045 Sweden also plans to have net zero emissions nationwide and afterwards negative emissions of CO2, to reduce global warming and reach the Paris agreement of maximum 1.5°C global warming level it is urgent and vital to create Carbon (C) sinks and to reach neutral and even negative emissions within the energy sector. Negative emissions can be reached in Combined Heat and Power plants (CHP) by Bio Carbon Capture and Storage (Bio-CCS). Demand on wood chips and bio-energy fuel is increasing on the European continent. A local source of biofuel might contribute to shorter transports, a local C-sink, security in supply and a way to meet both the increasing competition of fuel and the environmental political targets. Here we investigate the available land for local production of bioenergy forests in Södertälje and the amount of energy possible to produce from that. Using a detailed biotope database over the municipality, Biotopdatabasen, and a Geographical Information System (GIS) based approach 5 scenarios of potential land areal for planting of energy forests in the municipality have been analysed. Different criteria selections in biotopes, grasslands and historical crop fields, and land use, used or un-used, builds the scenarios; 1. All available grasslands, 1010 ha, 2. All available grasslands on earlier crop fields, 815 ha, 3. Unused available grassland on earlier crop field, 300 ha, 4. Available land on earlier crop fields, including forestry, 1715 ha, 5. Unused available land on earlier crop fields, 366 ha. Gross annual energy yields from energy forest in the scenarios were estimated to; 1. 46,2-65,1 GWh/y, 2. 37,3-52,5 GWh/y, 3. 13,7-19,3 GWh/y, 4. 78,4-110,5 GWh/y, 5. 16,7-23,6 GWh/y. The yield from all these scenarios will, in the expected gross normal yield scenario, match the energy produced today by fossil fuels in the local CHP and heating plant (0.64%, 2020) yields 0.69-3.96% of total energy produced. Scenarios 3 and 5 are considered likely scenarios but the effect on spreading pathways and thereby biodiversity needs to be assessed, using old crop fields lowers the risk of harming important biodiversity and possibly help restore C sink in soils.

Natural value assessments – can they predict the species richness of red listed and bioindicator fungi in Fennoscandian coniferous forests?

Samuelsson, Louise January 2017 (has links)
The thesis aims to examine how well two standardised methods in nature conservation, namely natural value assessment and key biotope inventory, perform in terms of recognising an area with a high amount of red listed and bioindicator fungi. The two methods are compared to see if any method is superior to find areas with high presence of red listed and bioindicator fungi and if a larger area automatically means a larger number of species. A natural value assessment inventory is conducted on study sites with a performed key biotope inventory, with an addition of an inventory on fungi. Statistical tests are completed to give information about occurring correlations. The results display that the key biotope inventory and the natural value assessment do not differ in their evaluations of an area. Analysis also shows that there is no relationship between the forest sites area and the assessment performed by the natural value assessment. However, if the assessment is performed by the key biotope inventory there exist a relationship with the forest sites area. Further on, there is no correlation between the area and its number of species. The tests also indicate that neither of the methods predict presence or the number of red listed and bioindicator species in a forest. Based on the results, the presence of bioindicator and red listed species alone are not good indicators of forest nature value. In order to give more credible answers to these questions, more studies with increased number of replicates should be conducted.

A aplicação do indicador de sustentabilidade BAF no mapeamento de geótopos urbanos: um experimento para a bacia hidrográfica do córrego Água Espraiada - São Paulo-SP / The use of the sustainability indicator BAF to mapping the urban geotopes: an experiment to the drainage basin Aguas Espraiada - São Paulo-SP

Blanes, Lucilia 29 February 2012 (has links)
The main objective of this thesis it was to evaluate the use of the sustainability indicator named \"BAF\" (Biotope Area Factor) to mapping urban geotopes present in the drainage basin \"Aguas Espraiada\" (São Paulo-SP-Brazil) in two historical moments, 1958 and 2011. The landscape units studied were classified as geotopes as proposed by Bertrand. Considering this classification we mapped the geotopes, and using BAF we did the analysis of the surface waterproofing coefficients that covers the studied area. Using this methodology it is possible to identify the geotopes incompatible with sustainability and propose clever solutions. This approach can be used as a tool for a better Brazilian urban planning associated with environmental quality.

Mapeamento da biótopos: instrumento para o fomento da qualidade ambiental / Biotopes mapping: instrument for promotion of ambient quality

Melo, Marcos Antônio de 10 December 2009 (has links)
Mapping biotopes can be considering an action of the Landscape Planning in order to guide the analysis and understanding of the structural and functional characteristics of the landscape. As a method, Biotope Mapping demonstrates ecological identities among territorial parts through studies/diagnoses of biophysics and humans components, and their relationships. Moreover it measures and establishes quality and quantitative indexes which demonstrated parameters of Environmental Quality. This paper intended apply the Biotope Mapping methodology in order to establish bases to a territorial planning, considering the Environmental Quality as a primordial element to effective it as well and to justify the methodology application was inspired in Europeans experiences that Biotope Mapping is made in scale of details. The bibliographic references came from a geosystemic approach and intended to make up natural and human variables in homogeny units. The adopted theorical and operational procedures were organized in steps which were preliminary and field works, data systematization, characterization and mappings. According all of theorical and methodological precepts and practical procedures proposals, the obtained results were organized in alphanumerical and spatial information. They were inputted in a database with GISs interface, and in a scale of details (1:10000) the thematic charts were created in order to cartographing this created information, measure and Environmental Quality indexes, with eminence for cover vegetable.

Biotopia: An interdisciplinary connection between ecology, suburbia, and the city

Phillips, Jessica 01 June 2009 (has links)
In an era when cities and towns are changing rapidly, public spaces are the key to reviving civic engagement. By re-introducing these public realms as ecological environments, we can re-structure the organic growth of civic tissue, re-define the city street into a park environment, and reveal the ecological landmarks that once beautified the landscape. These ecological landmarks will be used as corridors, nodes of circulation and storm water management to not only creates a regenerative landscape but to create a connection between ecology, suburbia and the city. The public realm in America has two roles: it is the dwelling place of our civilization and our city life, and our physical manifestation of the common good. When we degrade the public realm, we will automatically degrade the quality of our city and our city life, plus the character of all the enactments of our public life and communal life that takes place there. The public realm has to inform us not only where we are geographically, but has to inform us where we are in our culture, where we've come from, what kind of people we are, and it needs to afford us a glimpse as to where we are going. The past sixty years has engendered a decentralization of the city and a loss of our public realm. Suburbia was created and the absence of community development within cities increased. The lack of social economic interaction now challenges each city today. The inabilities to obtain a socially sustainable closed-loop system lifestyle are some of the challenges families continually battle. Transformation, succession and operation will help to emphasize and revitalize the downtown riverfront district in Nashville, Tennessee and create a living, dynamic entity that connects you to suburbia and an ecological dwelling environment. A naturalized mouth and iconic identity to the river will create a comprehensive plan for addressing urban design and the connection between the two sides of the river. Transportation, naturalization, sustainability and other ecological issues will be addressed in the development of a sustainable "green city," a new destination where city, river and suburbia interact in a dynamic and balanced relationship creating an urban estuary.
