Separate but Equal:The Black Racial Classification in the Canadian Blood System

Mwamba, Nseya 28 May 2019 (has links)
In this thesis, I explore the African, Caribbean, and Black communities— as it pertains directly to the Black racial classification— and their place within the Canadian blood donation system. The aim is to explore the ways in which the legacy of risk, the Black racial classification, pathology, and associations with disease may be manifested in donation policies and procedures (current and retired). Precisely, my interest lies in the subtle and diffuse ways in which Negrophobia (and its variant racism) survive in blood donation in spite of putative efforts to neutralize it. I undertook this study with the aim to fill a noticeable gap in the literature, by providing knowledge on the ways in which racial stereotypes can be disseminated discursively through institutionalized health policies. As data sources, I used explicitly publicly accessible national (and international) document materials on blood donation. With a critical discourse analysis methodology, the evidence presented demonstrate that under the guise of value-freedom, blood donation guidelines have the ability to reinforce dangerous assumptions providing a rationale for Negrophobic beliefs, behaviours and policies within the blood system. Studying blood donation in this manner offers evidence for the ways in which health institutions continue to treat Black populations based on racial stereotypes. This exceptional attention to the Black racial classification in blood donation provides important insights into the understanding of the lasting and plagued relationship that Black peoples have had with the scientific community, illustrating that institutionalized Negrophobia may remain imbedded despite decades of sociopolitical and medical progress.

This Master thesis aims at comparatively reading the novels Um Defeito de Cor, by Ana Maria Gonçalves and Beloved, by Toni Morrison. Through Kehinde and Sethe, main characters, we observe aspects such as: slave familiar constitution, body and sexuality, heritages and memories. We analyze the conditions for the exercise of motherhood in slavery context (in which different ways the characters were prevented from performing it), as well as the consequences mother-love achieved in a scenery in which crime was the act that humanized the slave. To our understanding the novels rescue non-European narratives of the colonization of Americas, providing space for the voices that echoed in the Slave Ship‟s basement, and that, nowadays, make loud the “resonance, the echo of life and freedom” (EVARISTO, 2008, p. 10-11). Therefore, we discuss fiction and „true facts‟, as a mean of building a net of credibility to the plot. In the Introduction, we delimit the themes and approaches to the novels. In the first chapter, we observe the theoretical aspects that ground this work, such as: authorship; Black Diaspora; (Black) Feminism and Transnational Feminism. The second chapter will be dedicated to Um Defeito de Cor, focusing on: Luiz Gama; the Foreword; the Novel; Body and Sexuality; Slave Family and Heritages and Memory. Beloved will be worked in the third chapter, analyzing: Margaret Garner; the Foreword; the Novel; Body and Sexuality; Slave Family and Heritages e Memory. The fourth chapter, the conclusion, is dedicated to approaching similarities and highlighting differences, especially concerning: Familiar Constitution/Motherhood; Infanticide; the Crossing through the Atlantic; Memories. Ana Maria Gonçalves and Toni Morrison, then, fill in the role of the storyteller, who keeps alive the narrative tradition through rescuing forgotten stories and giving way to the solution of ethnical and gender conflicts.

Teatro de memórias, palco de esquecimentos: culturas africanas e das diásporas negras em exposições / Theater of memories, stage of forgetfulness: African and African diaspora culture on exhibition

Cunha, Marcelo Nascimento Bernardo da 20 June 2006 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-27T19:31:22Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Tese Marcelo Nascimento Bernardo da Cunha.pdf: 24023525 bytes, checksum: c6c259892e5c6b1fb33f1cb9abee751f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-06-20 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This doctor thesis analyzed various expositions linked to the issues of African culture and the black diaspora. We discussed, within the research, questions related to affirmations of identities and the search of symbolic references, which sustain the debate of cultural diversity. Cultural institutions have to commit to these questions, as they produce and transmit the scientific discussion and images. Museums and similar institutions are key-players within the process of creating images and imaginaries, and therefore its contents and its forms of presentation within the expositions should be reconsidered. The Occident produced symbolisms concerning the African continent, about the people who lived and still live there. These symbolisms contributed to the distribution and maintenance of stereotypes about this continent, including the creation of negative ideas about the presence of black people in western societies, omitting important contributions of black men and women, as well as people of mixed race (mestiços) to contemporanean identities. These recurring constructions of images and meanings are seen as heritages of social practices that used expositions or other means of divulgation in order to construct imaginaries about the white superiority and the decline of other ethnic groups. In this thesis, we analyzed, through field and documental research, processes of construction of ideologies, in Brazil and Europe. As an example, we analyzed the case of Portugal and its imperial colonization project. We analyzed expositions in museums in the city of Salvador-Bahia and Recife-Pernambuco, identifying recurring similarities concerning the treatment of the issue within these expositions. Other expositions visited and analyzed include Lisbon, Paris and Tervuren, where new forms of how to discuss the issue of African cultures were found, including their influences on and inclusion in the Western cultures / Esta tese de doutorado procurou analisar exposições voltadas a culturas africanas e das diásporas negras.

The What If Collection

Daniels, Aisha J 01 January 2019 (has links)
The What If Collection is a visual narrative that confronts white supremacy, the social, economic, and political ideology used to subjugate black civilization via colonial rule and enslavement in history and via structural racism today. Many white people have been socialized into a racial illiteracy that fosters white supremacy. This racial illiteracy fails to realize and understand the destructive effects of Western dominance on the rest of the world, particularly on past and present Africa and her diaspora. In response, utilizing discursive design, the collection constructs a counter-story that depicts a shift in the power structure in which the white oppressor is placed in the historical experience of the black oppressed. Moving forward from the past, a contemporary society is visualized where black people are the dominant force.

Black Food Trucks Matter: A Qualitative Study Examining The (Mis)Representation, Underestimation, and Contribution of Black Entrepreneurs In The Food Truck Industry

Ariel D Smith (14223191) 11 August 2023 (has links)
<p>Food trucks have become increasingly popular over the last decade following the Great Recession of 2008. Scholars have begun to study the food truck phenomenon, its future projected trajectory, and even positioning it within social justice discourse along cultural lines; however, scholarship has yet to address the participation of Black entrepreneurs in the food truck industry.</p> <p><br></p> <p>The objective of this dissertation is to expand the perception of Black food entrepreneurs within the food truck industry by interrogating how Black food truck owners are misrepresented, under analyzed, and underestimated. Using a series of interdisciplinary qualitative methods including introspective analysis, thematic coding analysis, and case studies, I approach this objective by addressing three questions. First, I analyze movies and television to understand where Black-owned food trucks are represented in popular culture and how they are depicted. In doing so, we come to understand that Black business representation, specifically Black food truck representation consistently falls victim to negative stereotypes. These stereotypes can influence the extent to which Black food truck owners are taken seriously and seen as legitimate business leaders in their community. Second, I interview 16 Black food truck entrepreneurs to understand why the mobile food industry appealed to them and how it has become a platform for them to explore other opportunities. Finally, I review eight cities that have launched Black food truck festivals and parks within the last 6 years to gain an understanding of the collective power wielded by Black food truck owners and its impact Black communities. Moreover, this dissertation challenges the myth that collectivism does not exist among Black entrepreneurs and the Black community broadly.</p>
