The Portrayal of Older People in Marketing Materials for Senior Centers

Gillespie, Jason Robert 19 April 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This content analysis examined 128 senior center brochures and newsletters to determine how older people (those 65 years and older) were portrayed. Findings indicated that portrayals of older people in this medium that targets older people and their caretakers exclusively were overwhelmingly positive. Older people were portrayed favorably in terms of health status, personality descriptors related to level of happiness, interaction with others, mental state, as well as body image and overall evaluation. In several other categories such as energy level and activity level they were portrayed neutrally, and not a single category was dominated by negative portrayals. In fact, any negative portrayals accounted for less than 0.1% of all portrayals for any given category. Older females in particular, were portrayed in a more positive way than females in other analyses of media and advertising, which found them to be under represented or portrayed as unmotivated, ugly, or helpless. Females made up 64% of the overall representation compared to 36% for males, which closely resembles figures for participation at senior centers throughout the U.S. Females were also portrayed as more physically active and in better health than males. Those using a physical aid, either male or female were extremely under represented when compared to disability statistics, showing an overly positive portrayal of overall health status. The data supports other studies that demonstrate a more positive portrayal in media specifically targeting older people, and an overall trend of improving portrayals of older people across all mediums. Positive portrayals like those exhibited in senior center brochures and newsletters can greatly improve the self-image and overall quality of life of older people as well as help to change negative stereotypes of older people held by the general population.

Pihl, Lina January 2009 (has links)
This study has been about the representation of the Swedish tourism company Swanson’s. They do trips in US and every year they do a brochure with many pictures. The objective of my study is to look how pictures help to constructs places. Its often problem with pictures because sometimes they are constructs. In this way when people look at pictures they think the destination looks like the pictures. In the brochures I want to see what it is for pictures and through that see what kind of representation Swanson’s give of US. I have done both a quantitative and a qualitative research. For do a quantitative research I count all pictures in the both brochures and place them in 25 categories. To get a comprehensive picture of the result I interview a representing from Swanson’s. I analyzed some pictures too in the both brochures, together with the academic benchmarks. The conclusion of the study is that Swanson’s gives an American feeling from the pictures and a spirit from the Wild West. Many of the pictures are pictures of cowboys, native Indians and big, magnificent nature pictures. Other pictures are things that represent US, for example the Statue of Liberty. The tourist can be fooled, because they maybe think that US are like all the pictures in Swanson’s brochures. The authenticity is important for the representation in this way. The authenticity disappears sometimes, because we all know that Indians and cowboy don’t walk on the street today in US. Today we know through TV and internet that native Indians doesn’t exist in theirs genuine clothes and in this way we can accept Swanson’s pictures and dream away.

Helena, Olovsson, Sebastian, Öman January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to conduct a historical survey of two swedish tour operators and how they arrange a charter destination for different target groups. The purpose is also to review the material from a gender perspective, starting in the 1950s up until today. The study has been based on a qualitative research approach where text and image analysis was applied as the primary method, which was also supplemented by two interviews. The empirical material has mainly been taken from archives and consisted of travel catalogs issued by swedish tour operators Ving and Fritidsresor. Previous research related to the research field as well as theoretical references on visual communication, gender studies, target groups and semiotics have been used as aid to review and analyze the empirical material. The results show that there were different gestures of men and women and what has historically been considered masculine and feminine. The target groups were initially couples but eventually extended to young people and families with children.

Fortin, Philippe 30 January 2024 (has links)
The female religious communities (FRC) that contributed to building Quebec are currently facing extinction. They leave behind rich archival collections that bear witness to a significant part of Quebec's history. Despite its importance in terms of collective memory, this religious archival heritage (RAH) suffers from a lack of financial and human resources to ensure its preservation and continuity. To address these gaps, studies (Bureau et al, 2018 ; BAnQ, 2021) recommend the integration of various disciplines and perspectives in its valorization. As graphic designers, we became interested in the ephemera contained in the archival collections of FRCs, exploring how these documents, which often combine text and images to communicate with broad audiences, can serve as the basis for reconstructing an unprecedented and captivating history. In doing so, we hoped to highlight the relevance of the role of graphic designers in this ecosystem of valorization and, in turn, contribute to a more comprehensive and nuanced understanding of RAH. Taking the case of the Little Franciscans of Mary (LFM) of Baie-Saint-Paul, we first inventoried the ephemera from the congregation's collections and archives. In light of this inventory, we selected a series of five calendars that served as propaganda for the LFM during the period 1959-1963. Inspired by a narrative approach, we then conducted a series of data collection activities - artifact and content analysis, documentary research, interviews with 11 nuns - in order to gather several small narratives that, organized chronologically and thematically, constitute a final narrative. This narrative ultimately guided the design of a document that was intended to serve as a restitution to stakeholders involved in the management of the LFM heritage. This study underscores the relevance of integrating graphic designers into any team established to valorize RAH. Indeed, it highlights their project approach based on qualities such as empathy towards human subjects, collaboration with stakeholders, cultural sensitivity, and creativity. Additionally, it emphasizes the creation of graphic artifacts that are both educational, inspiring, and engaging for different audiences. In this way, the valorization, preservation, and continuity of RAH can only be advantaged. More specifically, this valorization project has transcended the mere informational value of propaganda calendars, revealing long-forgotten aspects of the congregation. The restitution document, in turn, serves as a crucial artifact for knowledge transfer, enabling stakeholders to better understand and appreciate their own calendars.

He was enshrined as a national reference in this literature field. We have reflected on how the poet could mark his existence in the world through his authorial production. Thus, we have related some of his life and work fragments through his biographical profile. We also have emphasized his author-function by establishing a dialogue with his brochures and books, which began to be sold at the public fair. Afterwards, they have conquered other places, like school and university libraries. We have also recalled cordel literature origin in Brazil, through relevant studies on this subject, as well as popular culture. We have presented the "New Cordel" according to Manoel Monteiro‟s understanding about this topic and, finally, we could think about working with cordel literature at school. In order to perform the research, we have used interviews. Besides, we have cataloged all Manoel Monteiro‟s brochures as well. We have seek theoretical subsidies in studies by Roger Chartier (1990; 1994; 2008; 2012), Michel de Certeau (2008; 2011), Michel Foucault (1992), Márcia Abreu (1993; 1996; 2001; 2006; 2007; 2011), Gilmar de Carvalho (2002), Ricardo Azevedo (1998), Socorro Pacífico Barbosa (2001), among other scholars. Survey results indicate a paradidactic / advertising content when it comes to Monteiro‟s cordel brochures. This particular feature allows greater integration of Manoel Monteiro‟s texts at school, as well as a greater awareness and knowledge about cordel literature by general population from Campina Grande (Paraíba, Brazil). This work has also contributed to construct the memory of Brazilian northeast cordel poets. Through their voices, profiles could be established, which record the various facets that make up Brazilian Northeast culture and also Brazilian society.

Evaluating recorded audio media for health communication in South Africa

Claasen-Veldsman, Maria Margaretha 30 April 2008 (has links)
This dissertation reports on an exploratory study investigating the potential of recorded audio media (i.e. audiocassettes/CDs) as a method of health communication in South Africa. The investigation examines recorded audio media as an alternative to printed brochures. People need access to information in order to make informed decisions about their health. In South Africa, the high HIV/AIDS infection rate is a case in point. The literature review deals with the accessibility of information in terms of physical accessibility (whether the receiver can find, operate and use the communication medium); and semantic accessibility (whether the receiver understands the message disseminated via the medium). Through the review, it was discovered that, where necessary, information must then be repackaged from an inaccessible to an accessible and appropriate format. Factors like visual disabilities, low levels of literacy and low reading proficiency, can render printed information inaccessible. This study discusses and researches the feasibility of recorded audio media (audiocassettes/CDs) as an alternative to print-based brochures by means of a comparative literature review and empirical study. Selected HIV/AIDS brochures (developed by the Department of Health) and similar recorded audio messages were evaluated amongst the target audience in order to compare the comprehension of the messages, the accessibility and acceptability of both media forms. The study was conducted at four public health clinics, where individual structured interviews and focus group interviews were employed as data collection methods. The data was analysed by means of qualitative content analysis. The findings indicate the definite potential of the use of recorded audio media in health and HIV/AIDS communication, and should be explored further. The comprehension of the audio messages was better than that of the printed brochures indicating the semantic accessibility of the audio messages. The positive reaction of the research participants toward the recorded audio messages also indicates the acceptability of the medium. Incorporating audiocassettes into the media mix of HIV/AIDS and other development and/or health communication campaigns, will contribute to the overall effectiveness of the communication strategy. / Dissertation (MA (Development Communication))--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Information Science / unrestricted
