Informing practice and sabotaging membership growth: an ideological rhetorical analysis of discursive materials from Kiwanis International

Stokes, Tonja LaFaye 08 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This study utilizes an ideological rhetorical analysis, applying Marxist and Feminist lenses, to artifacts from Kiwanis International, a prominent global service organization. These artifacts are: "The Permanent Objects of Kiwanis," guiding principles that were codified in 1924; "The Man Who Was God": a brief story about transforming from Kiwanis member to "Kiwanian," published in 1935 and 1985, respectively; and the 2012 "Join the Club" Membership Brochure. The rhetoric of discursive materials is one of the most salient representations of group ideology. In turn, ideology, particularly when it reflects and perpetuates social hegemony, has a normalizing effect on itself. Ideology shapes identity; identity shapes strategies to set process norms that create social cohesion. Norms of social cohesion become culture; culture reinforces ideology. When these components mirror social hegemony and replicate hegemonic power, they create institutions, like service organizations; these institutions then legitimate and normalize positions of social privilege. Ultimately, ideology and social hegemony reveal themselves through organizational and member practices and organizationally-produced discursive material. The purpose of this study is to analyze the historical, socio-political, and socio-cultural roots of Kiwanis International in order to draw logical conclusions about the organization's ideology for the purposes of understanding how that ideology contributes to, justifies, and perpetuates an unconscious, neo-colonial view of philanthropy. Kiwanis International, on an organizational (macro) level and at the club/member (micro) level, is structured around positions of racial, ethnic, socio-economic, linguistic, gender, and religious privilege, and so mimics the hegemonic power centers and dominant ideologies of society at large. In turn, the products and practices of the organization reflect these positions of privilege and inhibits the organization's ability to attract traditionally excluded, disenfranchised, or under-represented groups. Understanding that it is a contentious and futile to simply point where power relations exist and assert themselves, this study emphasizes where "othering" occurs in hopes of mitigating relations of domination and oppression between Kiwanis members and perspective members, and of moving forward the interests of those who have not traditionally been counted among Kiwanis' members but whose presence could save the organization.

Stress, burnout and salutogenic functioning amongst community service doctors in Kwazulu-Natal hospitals

Dhaniram, Nirasha 28 February 2003 (has links)
This research worked toward a general aim of analysing the role of salutogenic functioning as moderator variable in coping and noncoping. A sample of forty-one community service doctors (N = 41) employed in KwaZulu-Natal hospitals was obtained. According to the literature, salutogenic properties are expected to act as generalised resistance resources. Based on this assertion, it was assumed that: degree of salutogenic functioning = degree of coping = degree of stress and burnout. The results demonstrated high levels of stress and depersonalisation burnout. Salutogenic functioning tended to be low, especially for sense of coherence. The results indicated, no significant relationship between stress/burnout and salutogenic functioning. Salutogenic functioning was unable to differentiate between copers and noncopers. These results contradicted the literature assertion that high scores on salutogenic functioning correlate with low scores on stress/burnout. It was concluded that variables other than personality moderated for the high levels of stress and burnout in the sample. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.A. (Industrial Psychology)

Induction and professional development support of newly qualified professional nurses during community service

Makua, Memme Girly 06 1900 (has links)
Text in English / In South Africa, retention of newly qualified professional nurses in public health institutions upon completion of their year of compulsory remunerated community service remains a challenge that exacerbates the shortage of professional nurses in these institutions. The literature indicates that many newly qualified professional nurses leave the public health institutions due to lack of professional development support and heavy workloads while they are still finding their feet. A mixed-methods design of concurrent triangulation approach was used to answer the question: How are the newly qualified professional nurses supported in terms of induction and professional development during community service in South Africa? Triangulation was achieved by using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Induction/orientation documents from public health institutions were analysed using a checklist. A survey questionnaire with mixed quantitative closed items (1–43) and qualitative open-ended questions (43–46) was sent to newly qualified professional nurses who had recently completed community service. Focus groups held with operational nurse managers and individual interviews with coordinators of community service for nurses yielded rich qualitative data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to describe and synthesise data. The qualitative findings confirmed the quantitative findings. Findings were lack of professional development support in some public health institutions, informal, non-comprehensive support where given, shortage of experienced professional nurses, reluctance by some professional nurses and operational nurse managers to supervise newly qualified nurses, and increased workload due to the shortage of experienced professional nurses in the public health institutions. Inadequate clinical skills, poor discipline and lack of professionalism in the newly qualified professional nurses also played a part. Respondents suggested constructive recommendations for the induction and professional development support of the newly qualified professional nurses, and these were incorporated in the recommended guidelines for the induction and professional development support of newly qualified professional nurses during community service. / Health Studies / D. Nástroje aktivní politiky zaměstnanosti / Instruments of active labour-market policy

VYDRA, Arnošt January 2010 (has links)
In my graduation theses I was trying to clear up the role of separate instruments of active employment rate politics in fights against unemployment and sum up, if the application of these instruments in use leads to reducing of unemployment. At first, I described particular instruments of active employment rate politics in general, including their legal regulations and in the second part I made an analysis of the instruments APZ in area of České Budějovice. There is several ways how to reduce unemployment. In my opinion the most important is targeted and consequential pursuance of active employment rate politics, whose part is consultancy, prevention and checking. Further, to make more attractive required study fields and creation special programmes for risk groups.

Introduction of the new alternatives to imprisonment in criminal justice system ranks the Republic of Serbia legislation among contemporary criminal systems, which are characterized by the establishment of more humane ways of responding to milder forms of criminal behavior and the development of an alternative concept of treatment and punishment for perpetrators of minor offences.
The objectives of the research are a critical and comparative analysis of normative content for the new alternatives to imprisonment in criminal legislation, reassessment of the compliance with minimal standards provided in international documents, determination of the effectiveness of the imposition and implementation of the new alternatives to imprisonment, reassessment of the justification and possible scope of resisting milder forms of criminality, as well as determination of the impact of their implementation in the functioning of the entire criminal justice system of the Republic of Serbia.
The doctoral dissertation consists of seven chapters which are mostly addressed to the important issues relating to the regulation and implementation of the new alternatives of imprisonment. The first part is devoted to the determination of the concept and the reasons for the emergence of new alternative criminal sanctions and measures, as a response to the "crisis of the imprisonment." The second part deals with the traditional alternatives to prison sentence and determines their scope of application in our criminal justice system. The third part is dedicated to the appearance and development of the new alternatives to imprisonment in comparative law, and the fourth is dealing with most important international instruments in this domain, provided by United Nations and Council of Europe. The fifth, and the central, part of the research presents the new alternative criminal sanctions in our criminal law: community service, house arrest, the penalty of seizure of driver's license and a system of day-fines, their theoretical and critical normative analysis, as well as the effects of their application and
Нове алтернативе казни затвора у кривичном законодавству Републике Србије
XIII
the impact on the functioning in our criminal justice system. The sixth part deals with the specific new alternative measures in the comparative law, which potentially can achieve alteration of imprisonment or the execution of a prison sentence in the penal institution, while the seventh part deals with the specific alternative measures in our criminal justice system, and the effects and the impact on their implementation.
In accordance with the objectives of the research, after comprehensive analysis of the subject, and on the basis of longitudinal research of imposed and implemented new alternatives in the past decade, we confirmed and scientifically explained two basic and six operating hypothesis.
In the concluding remarks of the doctoral dissertation we sublimate the research results and present the proposals de lege ferenda, in order to influence the creation of a different normative and organizational framework for the implementation of the new alternatives to imprisonment, but also to make an impact on the effective functioning of the criminal justice system in the Republic of Serbia.
Key words: new alternatives to imprisonment, alternative criminal sanctions, community service, house arrest, alternative measures, criminal legislation of Republic of Serbia
