Design of a 2-D Lattice Flower Constellation for Earth observation applying the twin satellite conceptMartín-Fuertes Brañas, Julia January 2023 (has links)
Events such as forest fires or floods are a danger to our Earth’s environment and the people living in it. The sooner they can be detected, the less damage they can cause. An idea arises: use satellites to monitor the Earth and relay information to prevention and rescue organizations in a very short time, regardless of accessibility from ground. PandionAI is a Swedish start-up that aims to create a constellation of satellites that will carry built-in machine learning models that analyze the Earth images and detect early on such environmental catastrophes. The aim of this thesis is to design a constellation for such purpose. In parallel, a target list that includes potential places of interest for such events will be developed and the constellation performance will be evaluated with it by defining Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The target list has a dynamic nature as weather changes and climate evolves, so events of interest will be at different places in the globe as time passes. Because of this, four different target lists were developed, one per season. The events covered by the target lists are the environmental hazards: fires, floods, deforestation and CO2 footprint from factories. Constellation design is a highly complex problem due to its infinite possible solutions for a given purpose. Nevertheless, one can optimize for specific design parameters and assumptions. This thesis proposes a model in which for a given number of total satellites, multiple constellations are compared, and the search for the optimal design is performed given the defined KPIs. Constellations in the optimization process are designed applying the 2-D Lattice Flower Constellation method and adding the twin satellite concept.

Advanced Coded Modulation for High Speed Optical TransmissionLiu, Tao January 2016 (has links)
In the recent years, the exponential Internet traffic growth projections place enormous transmission rate demand on the underlying information infrastructure at every level, from the long haul submarine transmission to optical metro networks. In recent years, optical transmission at 100 Gb/s Ethernet date rate has been standardized by ITU-T and IEEE forums and 400Gb/s and 1Tb/s rates per DWDM channel systems has been under intensive investigation which are expected to be standardized within next couple of years. To facilitate the implementation of 400GbE and 1TbE technologies, the new advanced modulation scheme combined with advanced forward error correction code should be proposed. Instead of using traditional QAM, we prefer to use some other modulation techniques, which are more suitable for current coherent optical transmission systems and can also deal with the channel impairments. In this dissertation, we target at improving the channel capacity by designing the new modulation formats. For the first part of the dissertation, we first describe the optimal signal constellation design algorithm (OSCD), which is designed by placing constellation points onto a two dimensional space. Then, we expand the OSCD onto multidimensional space and design its corresponding mapping rule. At last, we also develop the OSCD algorithm for different channel scenario in order to make the constellation more tolerant to different channel impairments. We propose the LLR-OSCD for linear phase noise dominated channel and NL-OSCD for nonlinear phase noise dominated channel including both self-phase modulation (SPM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) cases. For the second part of the dissertation, we target at probability shaping of the constellation sets (non-uniform signaling). In the conventional data transmission schemes, the probability of each point in a given constellation is transmitted equally likely and the number of constellation sets is set to 2!. If the points with low energy are transmitted with larger probability then the others with large energy, the non- uniform scheme can achieve higher energy efficiency. Meanwhile, this scheme may be more suitable for optical communication because the transmitted points with large probabilities, which have small energy, suffer less nonlinearity. Both the Monte Carlo simulations and experiment demonstration of both OSCD and non-uniform signaling schemes indicate that our proposed signal constellation significantly outperforms QAM, IPQ, and sphere-packing based signal constellations.

Low Earth orbit satellite constellation control using atmospheric dragDu Toit, Daniel N.J. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 1997. / This dissertation considers the feasibility of using atmospheric drag to control
constellations of micro-satellites in low Earth orbits. The constellation control
requirements include an acquisition phase and a maintenance phase. Optimal
strategies are designed to control the relative positions of the satellites during these
two phases. It is shown that the feasibility and success of the strategies depend on
many factors, including the satellite properties and orbital configuration. A nominal
test constellation is presented and used as a generic example for the application of the
control strategies.
The dissertation also focuses on the accurate modelling and simulation of a typical
low Earth orbit satellite, moving under the influence of a variety of significant orbit
perturbation forces. The simulations form an integral part of the study and are used to
verify the application of all the proposed control strategies.

Rodinné konstelace ředitelů škol / Family constellation of HeadmastersBartošková, Iva January 2013 (has links)
This Diploma thesis examines the issue of family constellations school directors. It explores the family constellation directors of different types of schools. Starts from the premise that school heads comes from a similar initial family environment and that there is no difference between family constellations directors of kindergartens, primary and secondary schools. Basic starting point has become from research results of family constellations school principals in the Czech Republic, which uncover their characteristics. The theoretical part of the thesis starts with an explanation of basic terms, as well as maps of the individual differences-influence of heredity, family, education and environment. It also discusses the analysis of family constellations and their impact on the conduct and behavior of man. The research is based on a mixed research design. There is included both qualitative and quantitative phase of research. The entire research work is kept aim the work and research questions. They are looking for answers to what are the family constellation headmasters and if there is any similarity with head teachers and if there are differences in family constellations with directors of various types of schools. The conclusion provides an overview of family constellations school directors. The...

Psychoanalytic parent-infant psychotherapy in South Africa : opening ports of entry and flexing the frame.Dugmore, Nicola A. 24 July 2013 (has links)
Parent-infant psychotherapy is a small but growing field in South Africa. Its potential to contribute to mental health services in South Africa is, by contrast, vast. This thesis contributes towards much-needed research on the state of the field in the country and its potential applications across different sectors. Drawing on Daniel Stern’s concept of ports of entry, it is argued that an expansion of ports of entry offers an important integrating tool through which different aspects of parent-infant psychotherapy can be examined and adapted to the South African context. A history of parent-infant psychotherapy in South Africa is offered, together with an analysis of the experiences of current practitioners in the field. These aspects of the thesis draw on interviews with key stakeholders. The dominant context of private practice is then explored through two case study based papers. The first explores the meaning of symptoms in parent-infant psychotherapy. The second introduces the ‘grandmaternal transference’ as an important but under developed port of entry. These different aspects of parent-infant psychotherapy in South Africa are then considered through the prism of ports of entry in order to argue for a flexing of the psychoanalytic frame. Implications for the growth of the parent-infant psychotherapy field in South Africa are considered.

”Det är inte förrän man gör det som man förstår” : Om kommunikativa hinder vid en teaterhögskola / ”You can’t understand until you do it.” : On Communicative Obstacles at a Drama CollegeRönn, Milda January 2009 (has links)
The first aim of the dissertation is to shed light on how communication at a drama college may obstruct the students’ involvement. There are three studies on this subject in the dissertation. The first study deals with the students’ involvement in their education in general. The second study deals with the applicants’ involvement in the entrance examination to the college. The third study deals with the students’ involvement in a basic acting course at the college. The main theoretical framework is Etienne Wenger’s theories on social practices and social configurations, Per Linell’s activity type theory, and Herbert Clark’s theories on joint projects. The studies reveal a number of potential communicative obstacles, due to different basic communicative circumstances, communicative procedures and normative formulations. The second aim of the dissertation is to offer analytical tools which drama colleges and similar organizations can use to shed light on their own communication. The analytical concepts and the method used in the studies have the potential to be useful for such organizations: the concepts are relatively comprehensible and do not require a specific type of data, and the method offers steps in which to conduct an analysis. The third aim is to develop forms for what in the dissertation is called a practice-oriented communication analysis, in order to contribute to the discussion on how to study language use as part of broader communicative and social contexts, and how to collaborate with those whose communication is studied. The dissertation offers an orderly way to handle such questions, by formulating guidelines for the selection of theories, methods, and data, and by arguing for certain theories, methods, and data in regard to the guidelines.

Individ och agentskap i strategiska processer : En syntetisk och handlingslogisk ansatsGabrielsson, Åke, Paulsson, Margareta January 2004 (has links)
Even if strategy research often assumes that strategies are the result of intentional and purposeful behaviour the individual and human agency have tended to be neglected. Few empirical studies focus on how the individuals, their conceptions and actions interact with strategy formation. Based on ideas from process research and critical realism we made a review of the research and we maintain that the bulk of the research is based on simplified assumptions. We therefore propose a supplementary socio-cognitive approach based on more realistic assumptions, a synthesis and action logic approach, emphasising the individuals, the leading team and their embeddedness. In a process study with a comparative case study design we followed, in real time for about a decade, strategy formation processes in intermediate organisation in local economic development. Various methods of data collection and analysis were combined. By laying bare some of the mechanisms that explain the outcome in four processes we demonstrate the use of the proposed approach. A theoretical construction, the agent´s strategic concepts of action (SCA), aims at capturing the conceptions as an expression of the individual frame of reference providing reasons for action. The SCA carries explanatory power and is significant for both the process and content of the strategies. A typology of the SCAs is developed. The composition, the interaction and the structure of the team are other central aspects. We conclude that a strong group well suited to lead a formation process include a proactive strategist with a strategic idea and social capability; the role constellation is differentiated, and supplementary and other strategic actors relate to the strategy and the contextual roots in a way that will support the strategy. We also demonstrate in which circumstances some cognitive, social and political mechanisms discussed in earlier research are activated.
