The porpose of the present study was the development of a new device to be coupled to light-curing units for bonding orthodontic brackets and accessories and test of its efficacy in “in vitro” mechanical trial. The inner surface of the device is mirrored and is based on physical concepts of light refraction and reflection. The main advantage of such device is the reduced clinical time needed for bonding and the lesser possibility of contamination during the process. 120 bodies of proof were used for testing the shear bond strength of brackets bonded with the device. The Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) was also determined. The sample was divided into 2 groups. In group 1 a halogen light-curing unit was used and in group 2 a led lightcuring unit was used. Each group was then subdivided. In subgroups H1 and L1, a conventional light guide rod was used. In subgroups H2 and L2 bonding was performed with the mirrored device coupled to the tip of the guide light rod. The values obtained for the shear bond strength and the ARI in the subgroups were compared. Results showed that there was no statistically significant difference for the shear strength (p>0,05) and the ARI (p>0,05) between the subgroups. Conclusions are that 1 - The tests of mechanical trials and the ARI analysis showed that the new device fulfilled the requisites for bonding orthodontic accessories; 2 - time for bonding was reduced to half, being necessary only one light exposure.

Experimentell provning av sprintlyft för att lyfta betongbalkar / Experimental testing of sprint lift for liftingconcrete beams

Schönbeck, Sofie, Johansson, Anna January 2017 (has links)
The sprint lift is a common lift used on construction sites today to mount concrete beams and it is also used when the concrete beams are handled in the factory where they were manufactured. More and more prefabricated building elements are manufactured and this means that the lifts capacity needs to be ensured. In this study, capacity was experimentally tested in a specific lift, the sprint lift. It is a lift that Abetong uses for its concrete beams. What was checked during the study was if the concrete beams today manage more than they did in the corresponding test 42 years ago. A comparison of tests made by Abetong in 1975 and this study's test show that the sprint lift used today is capable of more load than what the 1975 tests did. The explanation for this is primarily that the quality of the concrete has developed over the years.

Siekte en gebrokenheid teenoor genesing en restourasie in Johannes (Afrikaans)

Kok, Jacobus (Kobus) 07 November 2008 (has links)
In this dissertation the healing acts of Jesus in John are investigated against the ancient Mediterranean socio-religious and cultural background in which it realized. All sickness and healing realities realize within a particular socio-cultural context and may differ significantly within different cultures. For example, less than one hundred years ago depression was not diagnosed as an illness and there existed no therapeutic processes for the disease. When one investigates ancient healing narratives which tell of sickness realities almost 2000 years ago, before the dawn of the Western Bio-Medical research system and modernism, one must remember that the sickness realities of that time will differ to a great extent from the modern project‘s sickness realities and its constructs. The researcher must in other words be very sensitive about anachronistic misinterpretations and ethnocentrism - that is, a reductionistic view of sickness (and other) realities through your own worldview. For this reason the term sickness is used as an umbrella term, and a distinction is made between the curing of a disease and the healing of an illness. The word group curing and disease are words that are used in the Western Bio-Medical world, and are also deeply imbedded within the modernistic philosophical worldview. On the other hand the word group healing of an illness is more inclusive in the sense that it is sensitive to sickness realities as experienced and constructed in ancient Mediterranean societies. In the first century ancient Mediterranean temple oriented Judaism for example, a particular disease (like skin disease), unlike today, also had negative socio-religious implications for the afflicted person which sometimes resulted in marginalization and status deconstruction. Turning to John‘s healing narratives it should also be taken into account that his healing acts are presented as σημετα that is, signs which illustrate that Jesus is the Son of God, the source of life (cf. John 20:30-31; 10:32; 6:14). The question to be answered is, in what way does John present the healing narratives in order to illustrate that Jesus is the true source of Life (cf. John 1:4). The thesis is thus developed that John presents sickness realities that closely represent ¯"death”, crisis, disorientation, brokenness and loss of life possibilities within the ancient Mediterranean symbolic universe. John then presents Jesus as the divine transformation Agent, who restores and recreates life possibilities after a transformational interaction with the sick person. It is also argued that John‘s understanding of healing is not to be limited to the traditional Western Biomedical paradigm revolving around the curing of disease but also includes a view of Jesus‘ role as healer and restorer of spiritual brokenness, a tradition which originated in the Old Testament. The narrative regarding the discussion between Jesus and the Samaritan woman is used as an example of a situation in which Jesus offers someone the gift of life and spiritual restoration or healing which resulted in the representation of reality. Lastly it will be argued why the resurrection could be understood as a Johannine σημετον and also be interpreted as the culminating healing act in John‘s Gospel, illustrating that Jesus is the true source of life in abundance (cf. John 1:4; 10:10). / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / New Testament Studies / PhD / Unrestricted

Modélisation multi-physiques et simulations numériques du moulage par injection mono et bi matières thermoplastique / silicone liquide / Multiphysics modeling and numerical simulation of mono and bi materials injection molding of thermoplastic / liquid silicone

Ou, Huibin 02 February 2015 (has links)
The family of high technology silicone elastomers LSR (Liquid Silicone Rubber) is identified as having the strongest arguments for development in the coming decades due to their unique properties and easy forming in large series. In particular, the injection molding of LSR on other materials such as thermoplastics or metals is possible today, which opens the possibility of obtaining multi-material, multi-color and new features components. The work presented in this thesis focuses on the transformation of silicone elastomers in order to better understand the phenomena involved, as to improve production processes and optimize processing conditions for mono or bi-material components in geometry and property functional well defined. The rheological, curing kinetic and thermal behaviors of silicone elastomers have been studied and characterized under real conditions of production by different methods combined. A thermo-rheo-kinetic model was then developed and implemented in commercial computer software Cadmould® to simulate the injection molding process of LSR or the overmolding process of LSR on to thermoplastics. For the validation of the models chosen and the parameters identified, the injection molding tests on industrial instrumented tools were performed and compared to numerical results. Finally, the characterization of interfacial adhesion between the thermoplastic and silicone elastomers was carried out under various adhesion tests. Moreover, the evolution of interfacial adhesion in thermoplastic/silicone components during the vulcanization of silicone elastomers has been characterized by the tensile test using a rotating rheometer in different heating cycles

Ribeiro, Gabriel Deltrejo January 2020 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: During the manufacturing process of natural rubber (BN) artifacts, it is possible to add loads, which can be combined depending on the desired final properties. In this sense, calcium carbonate has been used as filler in formulations with natural rubber, just to increase the sample volume for the same amount of rubber implemented, seeking only to reduce the final cost. Due to industrial demand, there is a need to investigate the possibility of causing a load, previously used as a filler, to act as a mechanical reinforcement load, that is, the performance of surface treatments becomes a viable possibility, so that the cargo is able to cross-link the BN carbon chains. Thus, the main objective of this work is the study of natural rubber composites of light crepe type with ultrafine calcium carbonate treated with 2% of Chartwell C-515.71HR^® for partial replacement of commercial silica treated with silane, seeking to identify the influence of this coupling agent in the vulcanization process, in order to improve the interaction between natural rubber and ultrafine calcium carbonate. The preparation took place in an open cylinder mixer with a variation of 10 in 10 phr for the loads, in the hybrids, it started in 40/00 until 00/40 (silica / ultrafine calcium carbonate), and a control sample was produced , with the same formulation, but without load, called pure gum. It was possible to replace up to 75% of the silica with treated calcium carbonate, but the best response was to replac... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Molecular Transportation in Polymer and Composite Materials: Barrier Performance and Mechanical Property Evaluation

Md Nuruddin (8738436) 21 April 2020 (has links)
<p>Transport of gasses and liquids through polymers and composites is an important factor to be considered when designing a material for structure and packaging applications. For structural engineering applications, more focus has been given to the transportation of water, vapor and organic liquids rather than gases as diffusion of these liquids into the polymers and polymer-based composites can significantly lower service life. In addition, much attention has been given to the leaching of unreacted reactant molecules, solvents, additives, degradation products from the polymers and composites to the atmosphere (water, soil etc.). We studied the transport of volatile organic compounds and water in cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP) (a representative of FRPC) and gas permeability of highly engineered cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) films.</p> <p>Cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP) is a popular technology which uses fiber reinforced polymer composite to repair sanitary sewer, stormwater, and drinking water pipe. The liner is installed in the field and exposed to flowing water immediately after installation (curing of the liner) is done. Curing conditions dictate liner properties as undercured liners can contain unreacted styrene monomers, additives, degradation products. These agents can leach out and enter the environment (soil, water, air). The objective of this work was to investigate the curing behavior, volatile content, thermal stability of steam-cured and UV-cured CIPP liners collected from Indiana and New York installation sites. The liner specimens were also exposed to water and other aggressive environmental conditions (saltwater, concrete pore solution at 50 °C) to explore the leaching of unreacted styrene and other organic chemicals from the liners. The influence of transportation of water, salt solution and pore solution through liners on mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties was also examined to study the durability of the liners. Study suggested that the durability of the liners depends on the curing condition and exposed environment conditions.</p> <p>The function of polymer packaging materials is mainly to inhibit gas and moisture permeation through the films. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have drawn growing interest for the packaging due to their non-toxicity, abundance in nature, biodegradability and high barrier properties. The objective of this work was to corelate the alignment of CNC with free volume and barrier performance of the film. Furthermore, citric acid (CA) was added to the CNC suspensions with varying quantity to explore the effect of CA on coating quality and barrier performance of CNC coated polypropylene (PP) film. Study revealed that CA addition in CNC suspension can enhance the hydrophobicity and gas barrier performance of coated PP films while retaining the high optical transparency. </p>

Strukturelle Klebungen mit UV- und lichthärtenden Acrylaten

Vogt, Iris 30 March 2009 (has links)
UV and light curing acrylates present a whole host of possibilities for the implementation of glass construction. Their clear and colourless appearance produces a transparent and lightweight construction. Short curing times consisting of no more than mere minutes allow for quick production with minimal downtime within the overall process. Processing can be resumed immediately once bonding has occurred. The advantages of acrylates can be compared to the characteristics and properties of adhesive silicones which have been widely approved by building authorities for specific façade applications (Structural-Sealant-Glazing-Systems - SSGS). The subject matter of this study is the development of auxiliary tools to plan and design adhesively bonded joints of UV and light curing acrylates. These adhesives are, therefore, analysed both generally as bulk material and in applications as a joint between glass and metal. The use of dog bone shaped specimens is recommended to analyze the material behaviour under a variety of influence factors such as temperature and testing rate. The bonded joints of test specimens provide an opportunity to examine the interaction between the adhesive and the materials to which they are adhered. An interface with graded properties is formed based upon the interactions between adhesive joints and each particular substrate. Further on, bonded specimens enable the development of a statement concerning the load-bearing capacity of joints. Constructions having spot bonded joints are tested to demonstrate the potential use of acrylic joints in architectural glass treatments. Safety barriers are tested under both static and dynamic loads. Sloped roof systems are tested to substantiate load-bearing capacity and to verify any residual carrying capacity. Components are exposed to natural weathering in order to examine the affects of ageing on the adhesive.

UV laser patterning of silicone-based soft electrode grids

Jakobsson, Maria January 2023 (has links)
Roughly 123 million people worldwide are affected by conditions such as epilepsy, dementia, and cardiovascular diseases. Wearable electrodes are currently used to monitor these conditions short-term. Long-term monitoring would allow for predicting seizures and could be used as a preventive treatment. As opposed to the currently used electrodes, wearables that are intended for long-term use must be soft and flexible in order not to cause harm or discomfort for the user. The electrodes should also have high resolution, meaning that the electrode paths should be as narrow as possible without negatively affecting the performance of the electrode. In this thesis, soft and flexible electrode grids based on silicones are developed using UV laser patterning. Two different methods are evaluated: laser curing of silicones with the addition of a photoinitiator, and laser ablation of conductive composite. The results found in this thesis are that photocuring silicones gives a too low resolution to be useful for patterning soft electrode grids. UV laser ablation on the other hand showed high resolution while the electrodes retained stretchability.
