Use Of The Ambiguity Function Technique For Target Detection In Phase Coded Continuous Wave Radars

Cankaya, Erkan 01 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
The goal of this thesis study is to investigate the Ambiguity Function Technique for target detection in phase-coded continuous wave radar. Also, phase shift keying techniques are examined in detail. Continuous Wave (CW) Radars, which are also known as Low Probability of Intercept (LPI) radars, emit continuous signals in time which are modulated by either frequency modulation or phase modulation techniques. Modulation of the transmitted radar signal is needed to estimate both the range and the radial velocity of the detected targets. In this thesis, Phase Shift Keying (PSK) techniques such as the Barker codes, Frank codes, P1, P2, P3, P4 codes will be employed for radar signal modulation. The use of Ambiguity Function, which is a non-linear Time- Frequency Representation (TFR), for target detection will be investigated in phasecoded CW radars for different target scenarios.

Magalhães, Ruane Fernandes de January 2017 (has links)
The construction industry is considered as one of the great causes of negative impacts to the environment, from the extraction of raw material, until the end-of-life of its projects. Among the main environmental impacts caused by the sector, can be highlighted the generation of construction waste (CW), which is intensified due to the development of large urban centers and the consequent need to implement infrastructure projects. In that context, one of the most efficient strategies to reduce CW is associated with making adequate choices in the design phase, with a focus on prevention at the source. However, it is complex to include sustainability factors, such as CW minimization, in construction designs. Therefore, it is relevant to adopt methods and tools to support the decision-making process. However, the existing methods are mostly directed to building designs, with an important gap associated with urban infrastructure designs. Thus, this research aims at proposing mechanisms to support decision making for the CW minimization in urban infrastructure projects, with two different approaches: control and evaluation; and guidance structure. For the composition of the control and the evaluation mechanisms, best practices were identified to reduce the CW generation in the design phase, based on literature review, documentary analysis of projects, and qualitative and quantitative surveys with specialists. Those best practices have given rise to environmental demands to be met by urban infrastructure projects, motivating the elaboration of a structured method for managing environmental requirements and trade-offs, as a support for the decision making design. The method was based on the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) tool, in which the quality matrix deployment, based on the opinion of specialists working in different stages of the development of urban designs. The main contributions of the research, focused on the CW minimization, can be considered: (i) obtaining a checklist, as an instrument to control and evaluate the quality of the designs to be developed; (ii) identification of requirements and of priority environmental indicators associated with those projects; and (iii) the development of a systematic for managing tradeoffs in urban infrastructure projects that are less environmentally impacting.

Softwarově definovaný transceiver pro radioamatérský provoz / Software defined transceiver for radio amateur use

Paus, Anton January 2012 (has links)
This project deals with possibilities of using the software defined radio conception for radio amateur use in a short wave band and its subsequent implementation into properly designed hardware. The aim of this work is to design a transceiver that would be capable of working in AM, FM, SSB, and CW modes. Within a theoretical part of the project the architectures of software defined radios and their components are discussed. This part was focused mainly on analog parts of the chain, such as amplifiers, filters and converters. Signal processing algorithms for both receiver and transmitter working in desired modes are studied subsequently and their computer models are built. Designed algorithms are implemented into FPGA structure (Virtex -5).

Generalizations of discrete Morse theory

Yaptieu Djeungue, Odette Sylvia 02 February 2018 (has links)
We generalize Forman’s discrete Morse theory, on one end by developing a discrete analogue of Morse-Bott theory for CW complexes, motivated by Morse-Bott theory in the smooth setting. On the other, motivated by J-N. Corvellec’s Morse theory for continuous functionals, we generalize Forman’s discrete Morse-floer theory by considering a vector field more general than the one extracted from a discrete Morse function, and defining a boundary operator from which the Betti numbers of the CW complex are obtained. We also do some Conley theory analysis.

The Effectiveness of Creative Writing for Motivating and Developing VocabularyAcquisitions in the ESL Classroom / Effektiviteten av att använda Kreativt Skrivande för att Motivera och utveckla Vokabulär i Klassrum för Engelska som Andraspråk

Duong, Manh, Berro, Hadi January 2022 (has links)
This study investigates the effectiveness of adopting a Creative Writing method to motivate and develop vocabulary learning in an ESL/EFL (English as a second language/English as a foreign language) context. This research also investigates the effectiveness of adapting CW as a teaching method and its approaches for facilitating vocabulary learning for upper-secondary English students. From this, we analyzed 12 empirical research from the year 2006 to 2021 by research reviewing studies on CW and synthesizing the commonalities. Our study showed promising results, which indicates that CW is a beneficial asset for teachers to increase student engagement and vocabulary acquisition for ESL/EFL learners overall that is applicable in Sweden.

Dishonesty: The role of rewards, professional identity and experimenter purpose disclosures

Rahwan, Zoe 03 June 2022 (has links)
When and why do people decide to behave dishonestly? By understanding dishonest behaviour, policy makers are better able to deter such behaviour and to support a thriving society and economy. The study of dishonesty has flourished in recent years, driven by the establishment of crowd-sourced labour platforms, though some important field work has also emerged. The empirical findings from these studies have supported the emergence of new economic and psychological models to explain dishonest behaviour. Yet, how replicable and generalisable are leading experimental findings? And what other contextual factors -- like the nature of reward, scale of reward, and design choices from the experimenter-- may drive dishonest behaviour? The central focus of this thesis was the attempted replication of a heavily cited paper in academia and the popular press. Previous replication efforts by-passed this work given the challenge of accessing professional participants. The paper which we attempted to replicate found that only bankers whose professional identity was made salient behaved dishonestly. This work was based on the notion that priming, or making salient one aspect of an individual’s identity and the associated norms, would affect behaviour. As priming professional banking identity prompted dishonesty, this was concluded to be indicative of problematic norms in the banking sector. Though it was unclear if this finding would hold with other banks, for example in the same or other jurisdictions, in different segments (e.g. commercial versus investment banking), and over time.

Interesting Variations—An Exploration of the Nature and Correlates of Vocational Interest States in Daily Life

Roemer, Lena 13 December 2021 (has links)
Research on interests is typically conducted with a trait or state perspective. Only recently, the two perspectives have been integrated within a theoretical model (Su et al., 2019), proposing that interest traits manifest as intraindividually varying states. Based on this model, this dissertation examines interests as conceptualized with the most prominent interest trait taxonomy—Holland’s (1997) taxonomy of vocational interests. With this dissertation, I sought to explore whether and how vocational interest traits manifest as states in daily life. Two preregistered experience sampling studies are this dissertation’s core. They are introduced with a literature overview on interest traits and states and an identification of two research goals: Exploring (1) the nature of interest trait manifestations in daily life and (2) correlates of interest states. While the first study provided first empirical answers on the nature and correlates of vocational interest states in daily life, the second study sought to refine these insights. The key findings of the two studies are that (1) persons systematically vary in their vocational interest states in daily life; (2) a distinctive pattern of interest state variability seems to set the nature of vocational interest states apart from the nature of Big Five personality states; (3) vocational interest states are systematically associated with specific situation- and person-related variables. The dissertation concludes with a summary of how the two studies contribute to the identified research goals and a discussion of the studies’ general strengths, limitations, and suggestions for further research. Theoretical implications are presented and associated with the integrative model of interests (Su, et al., 2019). Altogether, shedding light on the nature and correlates of vocational interest states in daily life, the presented research may encourage future work to consider a state perspective in research on vocational interests.

Personalauswahl an Universitäten / Verwendungshäufigkeit, Kriteriumsvalidität und Akzeptanz bei der Auswahl von Studierenden, Promovierenden und Postdocs und Professor:innen

Knaut, Max 05 October 2022 (has links)
The selection of personnel at universities is of great relevance. This dissertation deals with the selection processes of students, doctoral candidates, and postdocs and professors. The focus is on three elementary points of the processes: frequency of use, criterion validity, and acceptance. The work answers the questions of which procedures are used in the selection of personnel at universities, how well the success of students, doctoral candidates and postdocs, and professors can be predicted with different selection methods and how different selection methods in personnel selection procedures are accepted at universities. In two of our own studies, existing research gaps are closed, and the state of the literature is supplemented with new findings. For Study 1 N = 164 doctoral candidates were asked how they were selected. Doctoral positions were most often filled through unstructured selection interviews and personal contacts. N = 170 potential applicants for a doctoral position were asked about the acceptance ratings for selection procedures. Unstructured interviews, professional experience, work samples, and structured interviews had the highest ratings in acceptance. Study 2 focuses on the criterion validity and identified predictors that, in a longitudinal design, were able to predict both the objective and the subjective career success two years after completing the doctorate in N = 2 104 successful doctoral graduates. Two of the Big Five personality traits, openness to new experiences and neuroticism, were predictors for objective career success. Agreeableness and neuroticism could predict different aspects of subjective career success. In addition, a personality-requirement fit in openness to new experiences and extraversion was able to predict objective career success using response surface analysis.
