Bouchard-Coulombe, Camille 12 1900 (has links)
The number of unions where both partners do not share the same mother tongue has grown substantially over the last decades in Quebec. Given that children born to these unions live in a multilingual family setting, the purpose of this research is to study the mother tongue transmitted to these children. Using the 2006 Canadian census long-form questionnaire, we first conducted various descriptive analyses. These were intended to identify the mother tongue transmitted to children born to mixed-language unions, to ascertain whether children inherit either their mother or father's mother tongue, and to determine if a language shift occurs before the age of 18 years old, in other words whether their mother tongue differs from the principal language they use at home. In addition, through logistic regressions, we examined the contextual, ethnocultural and socioeconomic determinants explaining the choice of the language transmitted to children. The results show the predominance of the two official Canadian languages in mixed-language families, at the expense of non-official languages. Furthermore, the choice of the mother tongue transmitted is mainly conditioned by the place of residence, the parent's migration path and the children's birthplace.

Deslauriers, Mélanie 04 1900 (has links)
This research assesses the specific contribution of individual and contextual factors in explaining the socioeconomics discrepancies between members of First Nations communities and those of communities located nearby. Using logistic regression on 2001 census data, four dimensions of socioeconomic conditions, largely inspired by the Community Well-Being Index (CWB), are assessed: employment, housing, income and education. The results of the study show that social inequalities appear correlated to both types of factors. Educational inequalities are primarily due to contextual factors even if individual factors, such as age and gender, also play a role in determining the odds of living social inequalities. Educational inequalities precede employment and income inequalities and, to some extent, explain them. Moreover, housing inequalities are mainly explained by spatial location and residence in a First Nations community Furthermore, the ethnicity of respondents does not play a major role in explaining the discrepancies, once other characteristics are taken into account. This does not mean that social inequalities do not exist between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Canadians. Actually, significant differences between these two social categories are observed even when other characteristics are controlled for. Thus, the results of this study point out to the fact that the focus of quantitative research on Aboriginal people’s conditions should be put on additional predictors of inequalities besides “aboriginality”. Also, the review of literature shows a lack of research on social inequalities within First Nations communities in Canada.

Meloche-Turcot, Émilie 03 1900 (has links)
This research shows the relationship between socioeconomics inequalities and migration of the Registered Indians in Quebec in 2006. We evaluate the contribution of social and educational inequalities, economic inequalities, regional inequalities and legal and political inequalities as the contribution of migration to achieve a higher income. The results obtains for the Registered Indians are compared to non-Aboriginals to see the specific situation of the Registered Indians. Logistic regressions are performed to evaluate the contribution of the individual and collective characteristics on non-recent and recent migration and on a 75e percentile income. The results show that sex, age and migration play a very little part in obtaining a higher income. Having minimally a high school diploma or having a full-time job greatly increase the chances. For Registered Indians, nation of belonging and residence area explain more of the variance in income. Furthermore, sex and age explain a very little part of migration recently or less recent. Migration, years of schooling and occupation explain a greater part of the migration of the Registered Indians and non-Aboriginals. Nation of belonging and residence area explains also more of the explained variance of migration.

Target marketing : the geographical information systems approach

Soutar, Garron 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Geodemographics has been used extensively as a decision-support tool in both the business sector and the market survey environment in the United States, the United Kingdom and numerous other countries. This has however not been the case in South Africa, partly because of the expense involved in capturing current and complete customer information. As an alternative to capturing all the required customer information, geodemographics has frequently made use of government census data to supplement the organisation-specific data. However, even the census data has its shortcomings. This research has explored a method for building an organisation-specific database using a combination of government census data and organisation-specific data. The organisation-specific data was captured using a questionnaire that was targeted to a specific group of people. The information obtained from the questionnaire and which overlapped with specific census data variables was then used to update the relevant census variables. Cluster analysis was subsequently conducted on the census data in order to identify enumerator areas within the Western Province that had demographic and economic characteristics similar to those of the surveyed areas. Once the appropriate enumerator areas had been identified, the organisation-specific information from the survey was extrapolated to these new areas outside of the surveyed areas. The methodology used in this research provides a process that allows organisations to build a unique geodatabase by making use of the good qualities of both the census data and user-specific data. The resulting geodatabase is one that contains current and pertinent information while also providing complete spatial coverage.

This paper proposes a correction method for the distortion observed in the Brazilian municipalities population distribution in the Demographic Census data. This distortion is defined by a heightened concentration of municipalities with population close to the values of the interchanging levels of the Municipal Participation Fund (Fundo de Participação de Municípios FPM). This method identifies the candidate municipalities for adjustment by evaluating their distortion, obtained through a Jackknife method application, and suggests a corrected value for its population, according to a linear model which follows Zipf`s Law for cities (ZIPF, 1949). After the proposed adjustment, the McCrary test (2008) observes significative reduction of discontinuities in the municipalities population distribution for the years 2000, 2007 and 2010.

PRŮMYSLOVÉ REGIONY V ČESKÉ REPUBLICE: GEOGRAFICKÁ ORGANIZACE A AKTUÁLNÍ TENDENCE / Industrial regions in the Czech Republic: Geographical organisation and current trends

MAREK, Filip January 2013 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with industrial regions in Czech Republic. It is focused on delimitating industrial regions of selected centers in years 1991 and 2001. This was achieved by collecting relevant statistical data from 1991 and 2001 Population and housing census. Regional effect of these centers, based on commuting to industrial sector, was also examined. The author evaluated main changes of centers and their industrial estate in the period of transformation. He found the cause of these changes and identified crucial factors which nowadays affect commuting to industrial sector.

DENSIDADE URBANA E POPULACIONAL E SEUS EFEITOS MULTITEMPORAIS NA CIDADE DE CASCAVEL/PR / URBAN AND POPULATIONAL DENSITY AND ITS MULTITEMPORAL EFFECTS IN CASCAVEL-PR

Valmorbida, Leomar 28 March 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This work compares the urban growth, between the years of 1995 and 2006, with the population evolution of the demographic censuses, carried through between the years of 2000 and 2010. The delimitation and classification of the urban density, in categories, occurred from interpretation of the satellite images of the Landsat-5 sensor Thematic Mapper . Bands 3, 4 and 5 were used, in false composition color (R5G4B3). The classifications of urban density were defined as: high, average and low density. The demographic data concerning the censuses were extracted from the IBGE census sectors. Both the data from satellite images and census data were indexed in a georreferenced base. The grouping of census sectors leads to the use of samples pertinent to the complaints of taxpayers regarding the urban tax registration, registered and ceded by the Municipality of Cascavel/PR. It was also verified the expansion of urban density ratings in conjunction with population growth and percentage of urban area. It was found that, the greatest population evolution was observed in the class of low urban density. While the middle class urban density got minor population growth and urban expansion. It was also observed that the complaints were present in all urban density classes. Thus, we could relate the percentage of dissatisfactions contained in the classification of low urban density as areas of greater flexibility and expansion activities. This framework has made the data became more easily outdated. The changes in terms of constructions, land divisions, zoning and growth occur with intensity in the peripheries, just by the availability of spaces to be explored. The claims generated by users/contributors distributed by region and specialized in the urban area of Cascavel/PR point to the values attributed to the IPTU, taxes, as garbage collection and public lighting and, mainly, regarding the divergences in the measures of the properties (building, houses), that in some cases are with greater measure in the urban tax registration in relation to the constructed area and this affects the value to be collected for IPTU and taxes.
