Living well through story: land and narrative imagination in indigenous-state relations in British Columbia

Harvey, Megan 06 September 2017 (has links)
Students of colonialism know well that the stories we tell have the capacity to make, maintain, or transform our relationships as well as our material futures. As earlier work has shown, Indigenous and settler peoples encountered and apprehended one another through story at first contact and in all subsequent contact moments, reaching right up to present-day mechanisms for negotiating conflicts over rights, resources, sovereignty, and historical injustice. In this dissertation, I explore in depth the role of story as a social practice in Indigenous-state relations, examining a series of key encounters over the last 150 years in which Indigenous peoples challenged and contested the state’s possession of their lands in what would become British Columbia. Informed by archival and community-based research with two Indigenous nations – the Stó:lō and the Haida – this study offers a history of Indigenous tactics in pursuit of the larger objective of decolonization, especially since the 1960s. Each of the four main chapters explores how Indigenous peoples have engaged distinct state-sanctioned mechanisms for addressing the state’s dispossession of their lands. The first chapter examines the dynamics of orality and literacy in a series of Stó:lō petitions from the late nineteenth century, a time when reserves were being reduced in order to accommodate a rapid influx of settlers seeking agricultural lands. Chapter 2 looks at Stó:lō experiences of treaty negotiation in the early twenty-first century, and how they are attempting to re-write the master narrative of Stó:lō -state relations. Chapter 3 focuses on the Haida blockade of logging in the mid-1980s, examining how the Haida acted into being what would become an iconic story of Haida nationhood. Finally, chapter 5 explores story and belief through a close study of the narrative dynamics of Haida participation in the Joint Review of the Enbridge Northern Gateway Project between 2012-2014. In each of these encounters, Stó:lō and Haida people exceed the limited narrative spaces they are assigned for communicating who they are and how they relate to their territories and to the state, while attempting to shift the established narrative. Recent scholarship on Indigenous-state relations has focused on how liberal settler states continue to exclude Indigenous peoples even through their gestures at including them into the body politic. While such work on the state is critical, I suggest that it is equally important to understand Indigenous peoples’ demonstrated capacity for collective cultural endurance, and how it exists in tension with the forces acting to assimilate and subsume Indigenous difference within the normative structures of settler society. This study attempts to grasp the nature of this endurance, and demonstrates how narrative is as central to Indigenous peoples’ repossessions of their land as it was to the state’s original dispossession of it. / Graduate / 2018-08-08

Media Construction of Campus Sexual Assault: A Case Study

Murrizi, Stela January 2015 (has links)
Working within a social constructionist paradigm, the focus of this study is on the way in which the social problem of campus sexual assault is constructed and the way in which these constructions determine the proposed solutions. To address the issue, the study focuses on a high-profile case of a violent sexual assault that occurred at Carleton University in the fall of 2007. Drawing upon the work of Joel Best and Donileen Loseke, I approach this issue by focusing on the claims-making activities that emerged in response to this event. Using a mixed methods analysis of newspaper coverage of the event consisting of a quantitative content analysis combined with a more detailed thematic analysis focusing on the specific claims made and the more general themes they reflect, this study analyzes the dominant claims-makers identified by the media, the claims they put forth, and the proposed solutions that follow from their particular constructions of the problem. Results of this analysis illustrate the contested nature of the construction of campus sexual assault as well as the way in which competing discourses reflect features of a broader social discourse relating to crime, individualization, and the responsibilization of women to protect themselves from sexual violence.

Technické rezervy v neživotním pojištění / Technical reserves in non-life insurance

Vild, Jiří January 2010 (has links)
One of the main and crucial activities of an insurance company is to determine amount of technical reserves to be generated. If the insurance company performs in the non-life insurance branch, it focuses first of all on loss reserve which is generated to settle debts coming from insurance claims. To set the proper amount of this reserve, especially of the reserve on incurred but not reported losses (IBNR), mathematical and statistical methods are used. This thesis introduces one of the most used methods which is the chain ladder method. It presents the first chain ladder deterministic model then moves to its stochastic extension in a form of Mack's model and finally gets to the Munich chain ladder model, which takes into calculations not only data on losses paid but also losses incurred. In the theoretical part both these models (standard Mack's chain ladder and Munich chain ladder) are presented both separately and in a common context so that later in the analytical section they could be demonstrated on real data.

Analysis of Consumers' Attitudes Towards Sustainability Communication of H&M

Zaidi, Umar January 2021 (has links)
With the growing trend of the manufacturing of sustainable products by the apparel brands, the eco-friendly consumers are becoming more interested in knowing the brands’ sustainability communication and their claims. This study has taken the Katz’s attitude functions theory as a framework to better understand the factors which can help in calculating the consumers’ attitudes towards the sustainability communication of H&M, the leading apparel brand of Sweden. This research paper used qualitative research method and have done the ‘focused group analyses’ to investigate the consumers attitude towards sustainability communication of H&M. Four focus groups interviews were conducted and then transcribed to generate themes to interpretate the results. Researcher utilized the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach as a qualitative research method, to explore the ‘lived experience’ of the research participants. Author then interpretated the results and found out that the consumers are aware from the H&M sustainability communication. Although most of them positively influenced from the brand’s sustainability, yet some of them have doubts on the sustainability claims of H&M.

Från inget arbete till inget hem : En studie av hemlöshet i statens offentliga utredningar / From no work to no home : A study of homelessness in Swedish Government Official Reports

Alwehammar, Carl, Huss, Karin January 2022 (has links)

Společné dluhy a pohledávky / Joint debts and joint claims

Kursch, Vojtěch January 2022 (has links)
In his diploma thesis, the author deals with the institute of joint debts and joint claims. During the course of writing the thesis, the author points out the differences in up to now regulations, but also the conflicting views of literature and offers his opinion on the solution to these problems. In the introductory part, the author outlines the concepts, which he further deals with in the thesis. The development of joint debts and joint claims in the previous regulations follows, to which the author pays great attention, especially for the applicability of these regulations even today. The author also deals with today's regulation of joint debts and joint claims following the outline of the regulation in the Civil Code. The first chapter devoted more deeply to the current regulation is therefore a commitment with indivisible performance. The author points out the issue of solidarity-based and inseparable performance. The logically following chapter is the chapter of divisible performance, in which the author deals mainly with the solution of shares between the party of obligation, which is pluralistic. The most comprehensive part of the work is the fifth chapter, which deals in detail with passive solidarity obligations, including their changes and termination. In this section, the author...

The potential of coordination mechanisms to enhance the claim management process / Koordineringsmekanismernas potential för att förbättra claimshanteringens processer

Bociluk, Martina, Östin, Elvira January 2022 (has links)

The Implementation Of Interactive Science Notebooks And The Effect It Has On Students Writing

Braxton, Eva 01 January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not my practice of implementing Interactive Science Notebooks (ISN) impacts 4th grade students writing in science. Through this action research, students' writing was analyzed to determine whether the use of ISN affected students' use of details, support claims and justifications in their written responses. Also through the use of the Interactive Science Notebook, students' use of science vocabulary in their writing was also analyzed. Finally, students' reflective writing practices were examined in order to determine how students understood and explored physical science. A triangulation of data gathered consisted of the use of rubrics, focus groups and one-on-one conferencing. The data collected from this action research implied that the Interactive Science Notebooks did indeed have an impact on students' scientific writing. Students writing reflections demonstrated an increase in the use of claims and evidence, and meaningful questions related to the science topic investigated.
