Professional migrants in Cape Town : identity, culture and communityShea, Lenri 31 March 2008 (has links)
Before the 1990's, African migrants did not perceive South Africa as an ideal migration destination. This changed after the end of the apartheid era. The new political climate in the country and the new migration movements linked to increased globalisation changed the situation significantly. South Africa became an attractive migration destination, particularly also for professional African migrants.
In this dissertation a select group of black professional/skilled migrants from non-SADC countries, who are resident in Cape Town, are studied. It is shown that such transients defy any migration typology within the South African context. Their position in the world of economic migrants is not automatically one of cosmopolitanism, privilege and glamour. Their decision to migrate is also not necessarily voluntary.
The explication and analysis of the context and circumstances of the migrants are conducted with specific reference to:
- professional mobility vis a vis identity, culture and community
- human mobility and globalisation
- the demographics and legalities of immigration to South Africa
- origin, identity and the construct of `home'
- the `host' nation and perceptions, stereotypes and xenophobia
- personal networks and adaptation
- the notion of space becoming place.
What is thus demonstrated and interrogated is that `belonging' in this world is a process of change and fluctuation. `Crossing borders' will mean different things to different people - especially also for skilled/professional migrants. An investigation into school learners' perceptions of linguistic politeness norms within and across culturesKenyon, Tracy Karen 31 May 2013 (has links)
The assumption underlying this study is that cultures differ in terms of politeness norms. Often people from different cultures approach one another in what they think is an appropriate manner and the outcome is miscommunication. This may be attributed to differing cultural norms and this study aims to examine what a sample of school learners perceive to be polite behaviour when making requests and their reasons for doing so. This study focuses on perceived politeness norms (Brown and Levinson 1978) in English across selected South African cultures. The individuals are seen as reflecting a cultural identity, using norms that they feel are appropriate in given situations. Previous researchers have endeavoured to show that politeness norms are universal, but it has emerged that this is not always the case. When people from differing language and cultural backgrounds come into contact they have to find a common ground for their interaction to be successful (Lustig and Koester 1999). Of particular interest is the way people request things, both the way they phrase their request and their reasons for phrasing it this way. In order to investigate this, twenty-nine same-sex pairs of Grade 10 learners were selected from three schools with different cultural backgrounds in Grahamstown. These learners were required to complete a Discourse Completion Test, which contained both Think-Aloud and Retrospection Procedures, while they were being audio-taped. This data was transcribed and analysed using a model that was developed and adapted to describe request strategies. This data is shown through the use of basic statistics, even though it is primarily qualitative. The data is given this qualitative dimension by looking at the factors that the co-conversants attend to. The recorded data shows that although second language speakers of English have a formula for requesting things, they are not always able to articulate why they use the request strategies they do. It appears that English first language speakers and speakers who have English as an additional language request things similarly, but the first language speakers have access to a greater variety of politeness strategies. They also attend to different contextual features. This shows that while the need to be polite seems to be universal, the expectations of the speakers will be different and while a first language speaker of English would not misinterpret the force of a given speech act, they may feel that the person who has English as an additional language is rude. Three's a crowd: the process of triadic translation in a South African psychiatric institutionSlabbert, Meggan January 2010 (has links)
Mental health care in South Africa has long been governed by inequalities (Foster & Swartz, 1997). During apartheid, those who did not speak English and Afrikaans could not access mental health services in the same way as those who did (Foster & Swartz, 1997). One main reason for this is the majority of mental health practitioners could not, and were not required to speak languages other than English and Afrikaans (Swartz, 1991). The South African mental health literature suggests that language and communication must be prioritised if there is to be an improvement in mental health care services for those individuals who do not speak English and Afrikaans (Bantjes, 1999; Drennan & Swartz, 1999; Swartz & Drennan, 2000; Swartz & MacGregor, 2002). Drawing on Prasad's (2002) interpretation of Gadamer's critical hermeneutic theory and utilising thematic networks analysis (Attride-Stirling, 2001), this study investigated the process of translated clinical assessment interviews within a psychiatric hospital in the Eastern Cape Province within South Africa. Results of the study revealed that contextual factors, issues concerning linguistic and cultural heritage, clinicians' role expectations regarding translators' role performance, as well as relational dynamics regarding individual levels of control and influence within the translation triad, all impacted on the effectiveness of communication, translation and service provision. These fmdings are supported by literature on the theory and practice of translation that identifies these issues as prominent (Robinson, 2003). Specific recommendations regarding the formalisation of translation practices within the hospital setting, as well as the familiari~ation of clinical practitioners and psychiatric nurses with the intricacies of translation processes are offered.

Theorists and management in the South African non-profit sector agree that strong
stakeholder relationships are essential in negotiating the challenges faced by the
South African non-profit sector. Despite the acknowledgement from the non-profit
sector that strong relationships are key to achieving organisational goals, there is an
apparent lack of knowledge and strategic thinking amongst them pertaining to the
concept of stakeholder relationship management.
Against this background the purpose of this study was therefore to develop a
metamodern model for stakeholder relationship management, aimed specifically at the
South African non-profit sector, that could be implemented by NPO management in a
practical manner.
The blurring lines between the opposing views of modernism versus postmodernism
motivated the choice of metamodernism as a relevant worldview for this study.
Metamodernism does not imply a balance between these poles, but rather a constant
swinging of the pendulum during which metamodernism negotiates between
modernism and postmodernism. It is the construction of a workable, interrelated
worldview, recognising the intimate relationship between modernism and
postmodernism. It was therefore concluded that a metamodern worldview in which
both modernism and postmodernism feature, would not only make it possible for nonprofit
organisation managers to understand and join the discussion on stakeholder
relationship management, but also to implement the proposed metamodern
stakeholder relationship management model.
The resultant metamodern stakeholder relationship management model for non-profit
organisations is framed by so-called modernistic communication and stakeholder
relationship management theories, but it was done in line with the metamodern
worldview of the study, allowing for initiative and innovation. The flexible, organic and
cyclic nature of the proposed model echoes this worldview.
A qualitative, exploratory and interpretative research design was implemented to test
a conceptual framework and face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with senior management in the non-profit sector. The design of the framework and
subsequent model was guided by a number of assumptions and propositions arising
from a thorough literature review, all of which were supported and confirmed by the
research results.
The most significant contribution of the study is the application of a metamodern
worldview emanating from a reluctance to choose between a modern or postmodern
stance when discussing communication science and stakeholder relationship
management practices. It is therefore foreseen that it would offer the field of
communication science new and creative means of combining modernism and
postmodernism approaches when studying communication phenomena. It will also
expand the responsibility for communication and stakeholder relationship
management beyond that of the communication specialists to senior management in

An investigation into cultural barriers in intercultural communication between Blacks and Indians at Durban Institute of TechnologyDlomo, Thabisile 30 November 2003 (has links)
This study investigates language varieties, non-verbal behaviour and language attitudes as cultural barriers which inhibit successful communication between Blacks and Indians at Durban Institute of Technology. The investigation reveals that Indians and Blacks often misunderstand each other. Sometimes these groups feel misunderstood because they use different varieties of English. To compensate for these differences, participants use non-verbal strategies. However, non-verbal behaviour is culturally determined and people tend to transfer it to intercultural situations. One finds that this transfer leads to miscommunication and negative stereotypes. Furthermore, non verbal behaviour which does not meet the politeness criteria leads to negative attitudes and strained relations amongst peers and supervisors. The study suggests these solutions: the introduction of intercultural awareness campaigns for all employees and Zulu conversational skills for all Indians. For the whole South African community, the spirit of ubuntu should be cultivated between all racial groups to foster mutual respect. / Sociolinguistics / M.A.

A review of the literature reveals that organisational commitment is an outcome of organisational culture, when reviewing the definitions, theoretical development and models of these two concepts.
The integration of organisational commitment with organisational culture indicates that there is a need for a scientific study to determine the relationship between these two variables.
The empirical study involved the participation of 371 respondents in an organisation. A survey was conducted using the organisational commitment scale and the organisational culture questionnaire to determine the relationship between organisational culture and organisational commitment. The results suggest that organisational culture has an effect on organisational commitment. This descriptive study has as goal to describe the impact of cultural differences on the practice focussing on the function of supervision and the establishment of diverse organisations and problems arising in this connection. Carefull attention will be paid as to how respondents experience cultural differences in the working environment, their problems and their opinions of how to solve these problems effectively.
Conclusions and recomendations were made, which focussed on problems arising as result of cultural differences. The three interviews at the back of thesis are in Tswana / Teenage delinquency is a growing phenomenon in the Sebokeng area. Parents with teenagers perceived as “difficult”, feel unable to parent and discipline their children.
It is not known what their perceptions are regarding their realities in relation to their children’s uncontrollable behaviour. A qualitative study was conducted to answer the following questions: What is the perception of parents with teenagers perceived as “difficult” in relation to their children’s uncontrollable behaviour? What does delinquency communicate?
This study found that the behaviour of the parents and children communicates something about themselves as people, their needs, feelings and identity, sometimes on an unconscious level, as well as about their perceptions regarding the interaction between them.
Neither the behaviour of the parent nor of the child should be seen in isolation.

The purpose of this study was to explore and describe communication effectiveness and communication satisfaction experienced by professional nurses in selected public health care services. Quantitative, explorative and descriptive research was conducted to determine the communication effectiveness and levels of communication satisfaction.
The Downs and Adrian (2004) structured questionnaire was adapted and used to collect the data. The study population consisted of three groups of professional nurses, namely nurse managers (n=18), operational managers (n=22) and professional nurses (n=90).
The study highlighted areas of effective and ineffective communication, as well as areas of communication satisfaction and dissatisfaction, among professional nurses. The findings revealed that although professional nurses are satisfied with their supervisor-subordinate communication, they are dissatisfied with personal feedback between all categories of professional nurses. Recommendations for the improvement of the communication effectiveness and communication satisfaction of professional nurses are aimed at creating an organisational atmosphere conducive to two-way communication. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)

An exploration of adolescents' knowledge of HIV/AIDS and its influence on sexual behaviour: the case of a high school in Johannesburg, South AfricaTagwireyi, Laurence 06 1900 (has links)
Aims: The study was aimed at exploring adolescents‟ level of knowledge of HIV/AIDS and the influence this knowledge has on their sexual behaviour. Methods: In total, 20 in- depth interviews were conducted from a group of 20 (both males and females) secondary school learners. The interviews were audio taped with consent from participants. Results: The results of the study showed that participants possess basic knowledge of HIV/AIDS, including methods of prevention and transmission. No serious misconceptions about modes of transmission of HIV were found in this study. Although, participants reported condom use, no sexual intercourse with multiple concurrent partners and no intergenerational sexual relationships, the findings revealed some risk factors such as early sexual debuts, early dating, multiple sexual partnerships. Conclusions: The aforesaid sexual behaviours and the sexual activeness among learners is a cause for angst. Thus, these findings highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to sexual reproductive health education by all interested parties in order to enhance and sustain behaviour change among young people. / Health Studies / M.A. (Public Health)
