Cherchant à établir un pont théorique et pratique entre les sciences de l'éducation, les sciences cognitives et la philosophie des sciences, la thèse développe un modèle didactique à l'interface entre ces disciplines : le modèle allostérique de l'apprendre initié et développé par Giordan (1988) et al. (1992), qui s'inscrit dans le paradigme des théories du changement conceptuel. Nourri par les travaux récents des psychologues cognitifs sur les processus d'apprentissage tels que les théories du recyclage neuronal (Dehaene, 2007) ou de l'inhibition cérébrale (Houdé & Tzourio-Mazoyer, 2003), ainsi que sur diverses théories relatives à l'élaboration de la pensée telles que l'économie comportementale (Tversky & Kahnernan, 1982) ou le modèle-cadre SRK (Rasmussen, 1990), ce modèle développe et précise le concept d’allostérie à travers la description et la formalisation des processus de déconstruction-reconstruction des conceptions, qui ont lieu lors des apprentissages complexes. De la phase de théorisation du modèle, effectuée par un recours aux formalismes de la réactivité chimique en accord avec la métaphore initiale de l'allostérie, il est possible de déduire divers environnements didactiques opératoires et féconds pour le praticien de l'enseignement et de la médiation scientifiques. Ces prévisions théoriques sont alors mises à l'épreuve de l'expérimentation didactique à travers une recherche de terrain centrée sur la notion d'expérience contre-intuitive (Eastes & Pellaud, 2004) menée auprès de différents types de publics. / Aiming at bridging education sciences, cognitive sciences and philosophy of science both theoretically and practically, this thesis develops a didactical model at the interface between these fields: the allosteric learning model developed by Giordan (1988) et al. (1992), understood in the context conceptual change theories paradigm. Fueled by the recent works of cognitive psychologists on learning processes such as neuronal recycling (Dehaene, 2007) or cerebral inhibition (Houdé & Tzourio-Mazoyer, 2003), as well as on various theories related to the thought processes such as behavioral economies (Tversky & Kahneman, 1982) or the Skills-Rules-Knowledge framework model (Rasmussen, 1990), this model develops and refines the concept of allostery through the description and formalization of specific processes that take place in complex learning situations : the deconstruction-reconstruction of conceptions. Based on the theorization of the model, done through the use chemical reactivity formalisms in line with the initial metaphor of allostery, it is possible to deduce various operational and fruitful didactical environments for teaching practitioners or science communication professionals. These theoretical projections are then put to the test through didactic experimentation taking the shape of field research on the notion of counter-intuitive experiment (Eastes & Pellaud, 2004) conducted with different types of target groups.

概念改變教學策略對地球運動概念之教學效果--以國小六年級學生為例 / Teaching Strategy for Conceptual Change on the Earth's Motion: A Study of Sixth-Grade Students in Elementary School

本研究主要目的有三:(一)探討國小六年級學生在學習「地球的運動」前所具有的另類概念類型,及與空間能力的關係;(二)探討「地球的運動」單元各主要概念是否有發展的先後順序,及「地球形狀概念與重力概念發展」模式的適當性;(三)設計整合的概念改變教學策略,探討高、低空間能力者在不同教學層次與學習方式上的概念改變立即學習效果如何。進一步探討學習效果的持續性如何。並討論影響學生概念改變的可能因素,期能提供教學者及後續研究者之參考。 為完成前述研究目的,本研究進行研究一與研究二兩個研究,所使用的研究工具包括:地球的運動開放式紙筆測驗、地球的運動封閉式紙筆測驗、空間能力測驗、深層處理學生手冊和教學活動設計、淺層處理教學活動設計等,除空間能力測驗外,皆進行預試及修正。在研究一裡,採用問卷調查法及晤談法,以地球的運動開放式紙筆測驗,選取台北市萬興和萬福國小共235名學生為對象,考驗主要概念的發展順序。並依照空間能力測驗的結果找出前後各33﹪的學生列為高低空間能力者,考驗其在科學概念上是否有所差異。本研究一的主要結論如下: 1.高空間能力者在地球形狀、重力概念、晝夜成因、四季成因的科學概念,皆優於低空間能力者。 2.「地球形狀與重力概念的發展模式」是適當的,且各主要概念間有發展的順序存在,而學生的概念是「自然-文化-發展成熟度」三者的函數。 在研究二裡,採用準實驗研究法,首先設計「地球的運動」概念改變教學策略課程,並選取台北市萬興國小及萬福國小六年級各四個班級,共128位學生為對象,進行兩週的教學實驗,隨後進行紙筆測驗立即後測,間隔四週後進行延宕後測。根據研究所獲得資料進行分析,結論如下: 1.本研究之整合概念改變教學策略,有助於學生地球的運動相關概念的改變的立即效果和延宕效果。 2.接受深層處理的概念改變立即效果和延宕效果,皆優於接受淺層處理學習的效果。 3.配對合作學習效果會因為教學層次不同而有所不同,接受深層處理來學習時,配對合作的概念改變立即效果和延宕效果會優於個別學習。但當學生接受淺層處理時,配對合作學習與個別學習的概念改變立即效果和延宕效果並無差異。 4.配對合作學習效果會因為空間能力不同而有所不同,低空間能力學生,配對合作的概念改變立即效果和延宕效果會優於個別學習。但高空間能力學生,配對合作學習與個別學習的概念改變立即效果和延宕效果並無差異。 根據研究結果,本研究提出建議,以提供教育行政單位、國小自然科教師、課程設計者以及未來相關研究之參考。 / The purposes of this dissertation were: (1) to probe into the alternative conceptions of the students about earth's motion, and the relationship between these conceptions and spatial ability; (2) to identify the developmental sequence and model of the main concepts, and verify the model is adequate; (3) to design the instructional strategy of conceptual change and explore the learning effects that high- and low-spatial ability in different processing levels and learning styles. At last, the researcher identified the retention effect, and analyzed the factors that may influence on the conceptual change. For these purposes, the whole study was divided into study Ⅰ and Ⅱ. The instruments employed in this study included: The open-ended question test and the multiple-choice test of earth's motion, the spatial ability test, the curricula and student's manual for conceptual change teaching strategy. Except the spatial ability test, the item analysis and pilot study of the others were conducted to determine the reliability and validity, and promote the quality of this study. The study Ⅰ employed questionnaire survey and interview based on the open-ended question test of earth's motion. The participants were 235 sixth grade students from two elementary schools in Taipei. Through the data, the researcher investigated the developmental sequence of children's conceptual knowledge about the earth's motion. All students were classified as being of high- or low-ability group according to their performance on the spatial ability test. High- and Low-ability students scored upper and lower 33﹪ score of all students separately. Then the researcher examined the difference between high- and low-ability group on the performance of the open-ended question test. The main conclusions of study Ⅰ were as follows: 1. A t-test on the pretest indicated significant discrepancy for ability. In all concepts that included earth's shape, gravity concept, the causes of day/night and seasons, high- ability students outscored low-ability students. 2.The developmental model of earth's shape and gravity concept was adequate. There were developmental sequences among the main concepts. Student's conceptions are the function of physico-cultural and their developmental maturity. The study Ⅱ employed quasi-experimental design. At first, the researcher designed the teaching curricula of conceptual change. Then the researcher experimented on 8 classes of 128 students from two elementary schools in Taipei. Four intact classes were randomly assigned to different experimental groups in each school. Four groups were administered the pretest two weeks before the experimental treatment. After two weeks' instruction, all subjects accepted the posttest and delayed-test of earth's motion after 4 weeks. The results were as follows: 1.The instructional strategy of conceptual change that the researcher integrated had immediate and delayed effects. 2.Students learning by deep processing performed significantly better than the learning by superficial processing on the posttest and delayed-test. 3.The learning effect of cooperative dyads depended on the levels of processing. Students learning by deep processing environment, cooperative learning group did perform better than individual learning group on the posttest and delayed-test. Conversely, the result indicated no significant difference on the posttest and delayed-test between cooperative and individual learning. 4.The learning effect of cooperative dyads depended on the levels of spatial ability. Low-ability students with cooperative learning did perform better than those with individual learning on posttest and delayed-test. The performance of high-ability students showed no significant difference on posttest and delayed-test. Based on the results, these suggestions are proposed for educational administration institution, elementary teachers for science education, curricula designer, and future researchers.

Aportes del Aprendizaje Basado en Problemas (ABP) en la enseñanza de la Fisiología Animal en un programa de Zootecnia

En partant de quelques difficultés observées autour des aspects de la conceptualisation technoscientifique et de l’intégration de la de la théorie et la pratique dans l’apprentissage de la physiologie animale chez les étudiants du programme de Zootechnie de l’Université Nationale de Colombie, siège Medellín, cette recherche propose une stratégie didactique s’appuyant sur la méthode de l’Apprentissage Basé sur les Problèmes (ABP), appliquée spécifiquement aux sujets de thermorégulation et stress physiologique des animaux domestiques. Dans cette étude de cas on a travaillé avec un échantillon de huit étudiants à qui on a présenté dès la première session un problème didactique pour être résolu à travers le cours. Afin d’évaluer le processus on a réalisé trois enquêtes nommées Épreuves de Niveau de Formulation (NF) réalisées à différents moments de l’essai : l’une avant de commencer avec le sujet (NF 1), l’autre après la troisième classe théorique donnée et avant de faire la pratique sur le terrain (NF 2), et l’autre à la fin du processus (NF 3). Finalement on a réalisé des entretiens individuels avec chaque étudiant afin de connaître sa perception concernant la méthode. L’information obtenue a été soumise à une analyse qualitative et par des correspondances, par le biais du programme QDA Miner à travers de la révision et codification des textes provenants des enquêtes et de l’entretien individuel, complétés à leur tour par des observations sur le terrain, en analysant le changement conceptuel, la relation théorie-pratique et les correspondances entre les variables et les catégories établies. Parmi les principaux résultats obtenus on souligne le fait qu’après avoir appliqué l’ABP dans ce cours de Physiologie Animale le changement conceptuel a été favorisé et le problème formulé a servi comme connecteur entre la théorie et la pratique. En outre, on a observé la fusion des connaissances préalables avec les nouveaux acquis, l’apprentissage significatif, l’amélioration du niveau de formulation et l’augmentation de la scientificité des définitions; également il a mené à la solution viii de problèmes et à surmonter les obstacles épistémologiques comme la pluridisciplinarité et la non-linéarité. Il reste comme recommandation celle d’évaluer cette méthode dans d’autres sujets de la Physiologie Animale, dans d’autres sciences, dans des échantillons d’une taille majeure, ainsi comme approcher le sujet de l’évaluation appliquée directement à cette méthode. / Based on difficulties observed on the subject of technical-scientific conceptualization and the integration of theory and practice in learning animal physiology for students in the Animal Science program at the National University of Colombia in Medellin, this research paper proposes a problem-based learning strategy founded on the method of Problem Based Learning (PBL), applied specifically to the issues of thermoregulation and physiological stress in domestic animals. In this case study, a sample size of eight students was presented with a pedagogical problem during the first session that would then be solved during the course. In order to evaluate the process, three surveys were conducted called Level Test Formulations (NF) performed at different times of the trial: one before beginning the topic (NF 1), one after three theoretical classes had been given and before beginning the fieldwork (NF 2), and another one after the end of the process (NF 3). Finally, individual interviews were conducted with each student to know the students' perceptions regarding the method. The information obtained was subjected to a qualitative analysis and categorization, using the QDA Miner program which reviewed and coded texts from the surveys and individual interviews, supplemented in turn, by field observation, analyzing the conceptual change, the theory-practice relationship and the correlation between the variables and categories established. x Among the main results obtained, it should be noted that following the implementation of PBL in this Animal Physiology course, support for conceptual change was demonstrated and the formulated problem served as a connector between theory and practice. Moreover, there was a fusion of prior knowledge with newly acquired knowledge, meaningful learning, improvement in the level of conceptualization and an increase in the scientificness of definitions; it also led to problem-solving and overcoming epistemological obstacles such as multidisciplinarity and nonlinearity. As a result of this research, it is recommended that this method be evaluated in other topics related to Animal Physiology, in other sciences, in larger sample sizes, as well as to address the issue of evaluation applied directly to this method. / Partiendo de algunas dificultades observadas en torno a los aspectos de la conceptualización técnico-científica y de la integración de la teoría y la práctica en el aprendizaje de la fisiología animal en los estudiantes del programa curricular de Zootecnia de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, sede Medellín, la presente investigación propone una estrategia didáctica de enfoque problémico fundamentado en el método del Aprendizaje Basado en Problemas (ABP), aplicado específicamente en los temas de termorregulación y estrés fisiológico de los animales domésticos. En este estudio de caso se trabajó con una muestra de ocho estudiantes, a quienes se les presentó desde la primera sesión un problema didáctico para ser resuelto a través del curso. Con el fin de evaluar el proceso se llevaron a cabo tres encuestas denominadas Pruebas de nivel de formulación (NF) realizadas en distintos momentos del ensayo: una antes de comenzar con el tema (NF 1), otra después de las clases tres teóricas impartidas y antes de ir a la práctica de campo (NF 2), y otra después al final de todo el proceso (NF 3). Finalmente se realizaron entrevistas individuales a cada estudiante con el fin de conocer la percepción de los estudiantes con respecto al método. La información obtenida se sometió a un análisis cualitativo y por correspondencias, por medio del programa QDA Miner a través de la revisión y codificación de los textos provenientes de las encuestas y la entrevista individual, complementadas a su vez con la observación de campo, analizando el cambio conceptual, la relación teoría-práctica y las correspondencias entre las variables y categorías establecidas. vi Entre los principales resultados obtenidos cabe destacar que tras la aplicación del ABP en este curso de Fisiología Animal se favoreció el cambio conceptual y el problema formulado sirvió como conector entre la teoría y la práctica. Además, se observó la fusión de los conocimientos previos con los recién adquiridos, aprendizaje significativo, mejoramiento del nivel de formulación e incremento de la cientificidad de las definiciones; igualmente indujo la solución de problemas y la superación de obstáculos epistemológicos como la pluridisciplinariedad y la no-linearidad. Queda como recomendación el evaluar este método en otros temas de la Fisiología Animal, en otras ciencias, en muestras de mayor tamaño, así como abordar el tema de la evaluación aplicada directamente a este método.

Developing and Assessing Professional Competencies: a Pipe Dream? : Experiences from an Open-Ended Group Project Learning Environment

Professional competencies are explicitly identified in the primary learning outcomes for science and engineering degrees at many tertiary institutions.  Fulfillment of the requirements to equip our students with these skills, while formally acknowledged as important by all stakeholders, can be hard to demonstrate in practice.  Most degree awarding institutions would have difficulties if asked to document where in degree programs such competencies are developed. The work in this thesis addresses the issue of professional competencies from several angles.  The Open-Ended Group Project (OEGP) concept is introduced and proposed as an approach to constructing learning environments in which students’ development of professional competencies can be stimulated and assessed.  Scholarly, research-based development of the IT in Society course unit (ITiS) is described and analyzed in order to present ideas for tailoring OEGP-based course units towards meeting learning objectives related to professional competence.  Work in this thesis includes an examination of both the meanings attributed to the term professional competencies, and methods which can be used to assess the competencies once they are agreed on. The empirical work on developing ITiS is based on a framework for educational research, which has been both refined and extended as an integral part of my research.  The action research methodology is presented and concrete examples of implementations of different pedagogical interventions, based on the methodology, are given.  The framework provides support for relating a theoretical foundation to studies, or development, of learning environments.  The particular theoretical foundation for the examples in this thesis includes, apart from the action research methodology, constructivism, conceptual change, threshold concepts, communities of practice, ill-structured problem solving, the reflective practicum, and problem based learning. Facilitating Conceptual Change In Learning Rate Of Reaction Concepts

The main aim of this study to investigate the effectiveness of conceptual change texts oriented instruction accompanied with analogies over traditionally designed chemistry instruction on overcoming 10th grade students&amp / #8217 / misconceptions, their understanding of rate of reaction concepts and attitude towards chemistry as a school subject. 56 tenth grade students from two classes of a chemistry course taught by the same teacher in the ATAT&Uuml / RK Anatolian High school, participated in the study. This study was carried out in 2003-2004 spring semester. There were two groups in the study. Experimental group was instructed with conceptual change texts oriented instruction accompanied with analogies and the control group was instructed by traditionally designed chemistry instruction over a period of four weeks. To investigate the effect of treatment, Rate of Reaction Concepts Test and Attitude Scale Toward Chemistry as a school subject were administered to all students in both groups at the beginning and end of the treatment. To evaluate students&amp / #8217 / science process skills, Science Process Skills Test was administered before treatment. To test the hypothesis of the study ANOVA and ANCOVA were used. The result of the study showed that students in conceptual change texts oriented instruction accompanied with analogies got higher average scores in Rate of Reaction Concepts Test than traditionally designed chemistry instruction. Also, students in experimental group indicated a higher positive attitude toward chemistry as a school subject. In addition, science process skill was a strong predictor for the achievement related to rate of reaction concepts. Results and strategies that were developed for this study may be used by teachers to reduce and eliminate students&amp / #8217 / misconceptions about the rate of reaction concepts.

The main aim of this study to investigate the effectiveness of conceptual change texts oriented instruction accompanied with analogies over traditionally designed chemistry instruction on overcoming 10th grade students&rsquo / misconceptions, their understanding atoms and molecules concepts and attitude towards chemistry as a school subject . 45 tenth grades students from two classes of a chemistry course taught by the same teacher in Elmadag High School prticipated in the study that was carried out in 2004 &ndash / 2005 Fall semester . Two student groups participated in the study . One of them , called as Experimental group , was instructed with conceptual change text oriented instruction accompanied with analogies and the other one , called as Control group , was instructed with traditionally designed chemistry instruction over a period of two weeks . To investigate the effect of the treatment , Atoms and Molecules Concept Test and Attitude Scale Toward Chemistry as a school subject were administrated to all students in both groups at the begining and end of the the treatment . To evaluate students&rsquo / science process skills , Science Process Skills Test was administrated before treatment . ANCOVA and ANOVA were used to test the hypothesis of the study . The result of the study showed that students instructed with conceptual change text oriented instruction accompanied with analogies gained higher average scores in Atoms and Molecules Concept Test than students instructed by traditionally designed instruction . In addition , students in experiental group indicated a higher positive attitude toward chemistry as a school subject .The results also indicated science process skill was a stronger predictor for the achievement of atoms and molecules concepts. Strategies that were developed and results obtained for the present study may be used by science teachers to eliminate the students&rsquo / misconceptions about atoms and molecules concepts and provide better conceptual understanding of atoms and molecules.

L'Aprenentatge de coneixement especialitzat a través de l'anàlisi d'alguns conceptes del dret de família

Aquesta tesi analitza l'aprenentatge de coneixement especialitzat a partir d'una proposta teoricometodològica, de base lingüística i conceptual, centrada en l'àmbit del dret de família català. L'anàlisi empírica se centra en l'estudi de les definicions d'estudiants universitaris sobre nou conceptes concrets al llarg de dos tests amb les mateixes definicions: un test a l'inici del període d'instrucció explícita i un altre al final. L'objectiu principal és determinar si es produeix increment i precisió de coneixement en els tres mesos d'instrucció explícita de l'assignatura. L'anàlisi de les dades confirma que es produeix una estabilització del coneixement més que no pas un increment. Aquesta estabilització s'ha de relacionar directament amb el període considerat i amb el fet que el coneixement previ (no especialitzat) dels conceptes sembla estar fortament arrelat en els estudiants i, per tant, en un període tan breu d'instrucció explícita és difícil d'assolir el canvi conceptual a la manera dels especialistes. / This Doctoral Dissertation deals with specialized knowledge acquisition having a theoretical and methodological orientation of a linguistic and conceptual nature. Empirical analysis is devoted to Catalan Family Law and, more precisely, to the definitions provided by university students regarding 9 concepts throughout two tests with the same definitions. The first test is given at the beginning of the period of explicit instruction and the second at the end.The main goal is to determine whether increase and precision of knowledge is achieved or not after the three months of explicit instruction. Data analysis tells that there is knowledge stabilization rather than knowledge increasing. This stabilization can be put down to the considered period, together with the fact that previous knowledge of concepts seem to be firmly rooted in students, which leads to state that conceptual change (i.e., that of specialists) is difficult to attain within such brief period of instruction.

The implementation and evaluation of a constructivist intervention in secondary school Science teaching in Seychelles

Recent studies on human cognition have presented credible evidence that learners are not tabula rasa as previously conceived by traditional theorists, rather they enter new lessons with some preconceptions, most of which are resistant to change in spite of teachers' efforts to assuage them. As such the challenges confronting science educators and educational psychologists are to understand the nature of learners' preconceptions, designing and implement appropriate instructional interventions that would enable the learners become aware of and reconcile their conceptions that are inconsistent with accepted views of science. Several perspectives have been advocated on how learners' preconceptions can be modified through instructions. While traditional theorists subscribe to substitution of inaccurate conceptions with accurate ones, the constructivists identify with giving the learners autonomy to inquire and re-evaluate their own ideas. The former has been confronted with widespread criticism and is becoming less and less tenable. This research identifies with the latter. Conceptual change entails restructuring of ideas. It is a cognitive process that involves change in attitude toward learning. Based on the theoretical assumption that learning is facilitated through teaching that give the learners autonomy search to new ideas, verify them, and restructure existing ideas, I developed a model of conceptual change from where I deduced the four sub variables of the conceptual change that this study explored. The sub variables include formulation of ideas, search for new ideas, review of meaning, and transfer of knowledge. My assumption was that conceptual change can be facilitated through instructions that engage learners in experiences relevant to the four sub variables that I have mentioned. This conceptual framework served as my reference point for the designing of the Constructivist Teaching Model that consists of four instructional phases. Judging that I was resident and working in Seychelles as a teacher trainer at a time I developed the Constructivist Teaching Model, I chose to implement and evaluate it first in Seychelles. Hence this study is titled `The implementation and evaluation of a constructivist intervention in secondary school science teaching in Seychelles'. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the constructivist teaching model as an intervention to facilitate conceptual change. Basically, there are two main aims of this study. First, to investigate to what extent the constructivist teaching model facilitates conceptual change. Secondly, to investigate if the paradigms shift from the traditional method to the constructivist method of science teaching is welcomed in Seychelles. This study was carried out in two phases Pretest and Evaluation. Pretest was aimed at identifying the weaknesses of the initial version of my model of constructivist teaching with a view to eliminate those weaknesses to further strengthen the model. In a nutshell pretest was a step taken to enhance the validity of the model. Evaluation on the other hand was aimed at making a judgment whether a difference actually exists between the learners that received constructivist instruction and those that received traditional lecture instruction in terms of the four sub variables of conceptual change. To enable for this judgment necessitated an experiment. The experiment was conducted with a total of six secondary schools selected from the ten secondary schools on the island. The participants included 178 learners, 6 science teachers and 8 independent persons. The learners were constituted into three Bands; 1, 2 and 3. Each Band consisted of a Control group and an Experimental group. Altogether six groups were formed, with 3 Control groups and 3 Experimental groups. There were 59 learners in Band 1, comprising of 29 learners in the Control group and 30 learners in the Experimental group; Band 2 comprised a Control group of 25 learners and an Experimental group of 28 learners; and Band 3 consisted of 33 learners in each group. The learners in Band 1 were used for pretest that lasted for five week. The learners in Bands 2 and 3 were used in the evaluation that lasted for thirteen weeks. The groups were non-equivalent, suggesting that randomisation was not possible as the learners were in intact classes. Learners in the experimental groups received constructivist instruction while their counterparts in the control groups received traditional lecture instruction. Both groups were exposed to the same experimental conditions except in the methods of teaching. Data was collected through teacher interviews, independent observation, measurement of learners' achievement, and analysis of documents. Quantitative data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Qualitative data was analysed on the basis of content or meaning of the information given by the respondents. Following the design of this study the performance and achievements of learners that received constructivist instruction were compared with their counterparts who received traditional instruction. Guiding this study are two main assumptions. The first is the assumption of equality of the variance, and the second is the assumption of normality of the distribution. The results of Levene's test of equality of variances indicated a violation of the assumption of homogeneity of the variances of TI and CI groups while the results of test of skewness and kurtosis give the indication of normality of distribution of scores in both groups. The results of descriptive statistics analysis showed that the learners who received constructivist instruction performed better than the learners that received traditional instruction in terms of formulation of ideas, search for new ideas, review of meaning, and transfer of knowledge. The results of inferential statistics showed that the difference in the means of the two groups on each of the sub variables of conceptual change is significant. This evidence indicates that my model of constructivist teaching produced an effect measuring 0.86 and a power of 0.85 based on Cohen's Blueprint, and a reliability of 0.72 based on Cronbach's test of internal consistency. Besides statistical evidence, analysis of the opinions of science teachers who implemented the Constructivist Teaching Model in their respective classes and the independent persons who observed teaching and learning in both the experimental and control groups showed a preference for the constructivist approach over the traditional approach. On the grounds of the evidence gathered through observation and measurement this study concludes that the constructivist approach to science teaching is more effective than traditional lecture approach in facilitating the ability of secondary school learners in Seychelles to reconstruct ideas. This study also found that science educationists in Seychelles welcome the paradigm shift from the traditional approach to the constructivist approach. / Educational Studies / D. Educ. Este trabalho objetivou investigar as possibilidades pedagógicas de uma prática que oportunize a construção de conhecimentos sobre a temática “Evolução Biológica” em uma turma de 1° ano do Ensino Médio Politécnico da rede Estadual de Pelotas-RS. A pesquisa apoia-se na Epistemologica Genática de Jean Piaget e na teoria que orienta o modelo de mudança conceitual. Caracteriza-se como uma pesquisa-ação, visando a constante reflexão sobre a prática pedagógica. A investigação foi realizada a partir de dez encontros com uma turma do 1º. Ano do Ensino Médio, para desenvolvimento de uma unidade onde foram utilizados diferentes recursos didáticos. Os trabalhos dos alunos foram registrados de forma individual e coletiva, com vistas ao acompanhamento de seus conceitos e construções. Os dados foram analisados numa abordagem qualitativa, envolvendo a Análise Descritiva das atividades desenvolvidas na turma e acompanhamento das aprendizagens e a Análise de Conteúdo, onde os trabalhos dos alunos, o diário de campo para acompanhamentos da prática e registros da construção de conhecimentos foram categorizados e teorizados. / The teaching of biological evolution is one of the most complex issues within the biology education and is considered by many authors as the axis that integrates all the knowledge studied in the biological field. This study aimed to investigate the pedagogical possibilities of a practice further opportunity to build knowledge on the theme "Biological Evolution" in a class of 1st year of the Polytechnic School of the State network Pelotas. The research relies on epistemological Genática of Jean Piaget and the theory that guides the conceptual change model. It is characterized as an action research aimed at constant reflection on the pedagogical practice. The research was carried out ten meetings with a group of the 1st. Year of high school, to develop a unit where different teaching resources were used. The work of students were registered individually and collectively, with a view to monitoring their concepts and constructs. Data were analyzed in a qualitative approach, involving the Descriptive Analysis of the activities developed in the classroom and monitoring of learning and content analysis, where the works of students, daily field to practice accompaniments and records the construction of knowledge were categorized and theorized.

Pre-service science teachers’ conceptual and procedural difficulties in solving mathematical problems in physical science

>Magister Scientiae - MSc / Students frequently leave first-year physical science classes with a dual set of physical laws in mind- the equations to be applied to qualitative problems and the entrenched set of concepts, many erroneous, to be applied to qualitative, descriptive, or explanatory problems. It is in this sense that the emphasis of this study is on ‘change’ rather than acquisition. Thus, a blend of theoretical framework was considered according to the aim of the study. Of immediate relevance in this regard within the “constructivist paradigm” are: Posner, Strike, Hewson and Gertzog’s (1982) conceptual change theory and the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. Moreover, the very shift or restructuring of existing knowledge, concepts or schemata is what distinguishes conceptual change from other types of learning, and provides students with a more fruitful conceptual framework to solve problems, explain phenomena, and function in the world (Biemans & Simons, 1999; Davis, 2011). A quasi-experimental design was adopted to explore pre-service teachers’ conceptual and procedural difficulties in solving mathematical problems in physical science. Sixteen second and third year pre-service teachers in one of the historically black universities in the Western Cape, South Africa, participated in the study. Two inseparable concepts of basic mechanics, work-energy concepts were taught and used for data collection. Data were collected using questionnaires, Physical Science Achievement Test (PSAT), Multiple Reflective Questions (MRQ) and an interview. An explicit problem solving strategy (IDEAL strategy versus maths-in-science instructional model) was taught in the intervention sessions for duration of three weeks to the experimental group (E-group). IDEAL strategy placed emphasis on drill and practice heuristics that helped the pre-service teachers’ (E-group) understanding of problem-solving. Reinforcing heuristics of this IDEAL strategy include breaking a complex problem into sub-problems. Defining and representing problem (e.g. devising a plan-using Free-Body-Diagram) was part of the exploring possible strategies of the IDEAL. More details on IDEAL strategy are discussed in Chapter 3. The same work-energy concepts were taught to the control group (C-group) using lecture-demonstration method. A technique (i.e. revised taxonomy table for knowledge and cognitive process dimension) was used to categorize and analyse the level of difficulties for each item tested (e.g. D1 = minor difficulty, D2 = major difficulty, and D3 = atypical difficulty
