L’entrée du soliste dans les concertos de 1750 à 1810, à travers les œuvres de Johann Christian Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Viotti et Beethoven / The Entry of the Soloist in the Concerto between 1750 and 1810, Through the Works of Johann Christian Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Viotti & Beethoven

Lachat Sarrete, Priscille 26 February 2010 (has links)
Between 1750 and 1810, the entry of the soloist in the first movement of a concerto is a musical and theatrical event. Going through the corpus of Johann Christian Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Viotti, this thesis distinguishes personal strategies from recurring compositional techniques that are standard in the period under review. It analyzes the rhetorical techniques used through assessing the effect of each technique compared to that of the expected standard. The first part concerns the construction of the expectation of the soloist. It evaluates the introductive function of the first tutti, creating a disctinction between “frame-tuttis” and “narrative tuttis”, and examinating the impact of the presence of a modulation. The second part focusses on the closing strategies of the orchestral exposition and the existence of a break for the soloist’s entry. The third part shows the hand over to the soloist through the choice of the entry theme, the eventual ornementation, and the adding of an autonomous virtuoso introductive section.

Late Eighteenth-Century English Violin Concertos: A Genre in Transition

Siu, Eric 24 July 2013 (has links)
Classical violin concertos by English composers are relatively obscure nowadays, as the genre is largely monopolized by Mozart’s last three concertos. This study explores the compositional and violinistic traits of ten English concertos from the late eighteenth century, as well as the social and cultural circumstances under which they were written. These concertos are challenging violinistically, suggesting that they were primarily intended as virtuosic showpieces. In addition, a number of the concertos display musical eccentricities that hint at the quirky personalities of their composers. In some respects, these concertos are unadventurous, particularly in terms of harmony and thematic contrasts. However, they contain a number of unique compositional features that are worthy of our attention. The most notable of these is the incorporation of Baroque features in a large number of the concertos, despite their general adherence to the new galant style. All evidence suggests that the two styles were combined deliberately as a compositional technique, and this is perhaps the most distinctly “English” characteristic of these concertos.

This is a qualitative research with three subjects, which are important soloists, teachers and orchestral musicians in the nacional scenario. The focus of the first chapter is mainly the technical-interpretative problems found in the performance of the concerto and the technical fundaments of the trumpet. On the second chapter it is included a biography of the composer, historical data of his work and the explanation of the technical-interpretative questions presented to the subjects. It is also in this chapter that the technical-interpretative questions, which were presented to the subjects to answer, are explained. The third chapter has a description of the methodology of the research, which was based in structured questionnaires that were answered by the subjects. The third chapter finishes with the comparison and analysis of the obtained answers. The dissertation ends with the final considerations, which demonstrates the importance of the performer when looking to the score and constructing the musical speech. Between the three subjects, it can be seen not only differences, but also many common points. The main objective of this study is to build interpretative questions that might be found in the Concerto and how the three professors think about these questions and pursue to solve them. From the crossing and analysis of their answers, we seek to achieve a broader view of the piece, and finally the possible solutions of its technical-interpretative questions. This study aims at to provide a new look at one of the most prolific Latin American intellectuals of the twentieth century: the Cuban novelist Alejo Carpentier (1904-1980). It starts with the analysis of one of his last novels, Concerto Barroco (1974), considered by the author as the Summa Theologica of his career. It takes it as a place in which Carpentier allegorically represented many of his ideas thought during his life. In particular, the defense of a baroque that is, at the same time, American and universal, that looked for redefine America‘s relations with the rest of the world, in an inversion of the relationship between center and periphery. Alongside this discourse of the uniqueness baroque continent, Carpentier was admittedly a fervent propagandist of the Cuban Revolution (1959) and the government of Fidel Castro, a fact that generated much criticism of his figure and some tensions in his own speech, which reflected in his novels, including Concerto Barroco. My analysis centers in these tensions within the discourse of Carpentier, and in the novel itself. My hypothesis is that music was an escape route used by Carpentier as a strategy to ease tensions from his speeches that had repercussions in Concerto Barroco.

A Stylistic and Structural Analysis of the Grieg Piano Concerto in A Minor

Gurnee, Nell Frances 08 1900 (has links)
This problem has been limited to a study of the largest form among Grieg's piano compositions, the Piano Concert in A Minor. References are made to his smaller piano pieces, for the concerto has proved representative of his style of composition and, being one of his earlier works, it reflects a vigor and enthusiasm not present in his later work. Rhythm is discussed with relationship to the harmony and melody in the sections devoted to these two elements. The present study does not include consideration of the orchestral score and its relationship to the piano part.

Sergei Taneyev (1856-1915): An Analysis of His Piano Concerto in E-flat Major and Its Relationship to Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1

Liu, Louise Jiayin 05 1900 (has links)
This lecture recital seeks to prove that Sergei Taneyev's only piano concerto is a valuable addition to the piano concerto repertoire for historical and theoretical examination. Taneyev's biographical background proves he was one of the major figures in Russian musical life during the late nineteenth century. For one who had such an important role in music history, it is an unfortunate that his music has not been popular. Through letters to contemporary composers and friends, Taneyev's master teacher Tchaikovsky revealed why his music and piano concerto were not as popular as they should have been. This lecture recital examines Taneyev's compositional style and illustrates his influence in the works of his famous student Sergei Rachmaninoff through examples from Taneyev's Piano Concerto in E-flat Major and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. Taneyev's Piano Concerto and Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 have both similarities and differences that resulted from the composers' close relationship. Letters between the teacher and student enlighten readers to the compositional process of the two piano concertos and demonstrates the value of Taneyev's Piano Concerto. A detailed theoretical analysis is included in this dissertation. The principal themes and motifs are presented with a detailed analysis of the structure of the concerto's first movement as the themes, motifs, and variations are woven into a unified piece of music. The second movement of the concerto is remarkable for its harmonic progressions. This research substantiates that Taneyev's Piano Concerto is valuable to the current piano repertoire and worthy of performances throughout the world. The concerto occupies an important role in music history and theory and is useful for piano students to study.

A Historical Survey of Woodwind Doubling and A Form/Style Analysis of Four Works for Doubler and Wind Ensemble, a Lecture Recital together with Three Recitals of Selected Works by W.A. Mozart. A. Glazounov. P. Tate. A. Szalowski. A. Copland and Others

Thompson, Phil A. 05 1900 (has links)
Four works are selected to demonstrate the stature and demands of this craft and to represent a pinnacle in the art of contemporary woodwind doubling. Concerto for Doubles, by Thomas Filas, Concerto Tri-Chroma. by Michael Kibbe, Rhapsody Nova, by Clare Fischer and Suite for Solo Flute. Clarinet and Alto Saxophone by Claude Smith all represent rare, major solo works written specifically for three individual woodwind doublers. The paper will begin with a history of the practice of woodwind doubling from the fifteenth century to the present. The four works will then be examined by considering form, style and related performance practices.
