La Centrafrique est-elle un guêpier? : Traduire la réalité d'un texte français sur l'Afrique / Is the Central African Republic a hornet’s nest? : Translating the reality of a French text on Africa

Lundberg, Anna January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to examine the translation of a political and historical text on the French-African relations from French into Swedish, focusing on the translation of cultural reference and metaphor. The African context is relatively unknown to Swedish readers. This and other factors mean that some expressions and phenomena mentioned in the source text will need explanation in the translated text. This type of text also contains a large number of metaphors that may have to be adapted to the target text context. The analysis in this paper has been made using the author’s own translation of an extract of the essay book ”La France en Afrique – Cinq siècles de présence: vérités et mensonges” by Jean-Paul Gourévitch. A number of works dedicated to the translation of metaphors and cultural reference have been studied and theories applied to the translation of this particular source text. The main results of the study are firstly that Ogden & Richards triangle of reference will be particularly helpful to the translator when dealing with the issues of cultural reference and metaphor. Secondly, Vermeer’s skopos theory helps the translator make the text relevant and adapted to the reader’s needs. Thirdly, the target text structure is of importance.

Connaissances culturelles et contextuelles dans la traduction lors du passage du polonais en français / Cultural and contextual knowledge in Polish-to-French translations

Sarapuk, Anna 13 December 2017 (has links)
Linguistic skills are essential for translators. However, a profound knowledge of source andtarget cultures is also fundamental for transmitting all the richness of a work. Researchershave been working on the importance of translating culture for thirty years, and the criteriathey define are more and more precise. However, translation from Polish into French has beenlittle studied. Therefore, we examine the expression of cultural and contextual knowledge inPolish-to-French translations. To do that, we mainly use a corpus of broadcasting texts andquestion the importance of both individual and national culture when the primary goal of textis not cultural transmission: how to translate such cultural elements? We focus our researchon the works of the famous Polish fantasy writer Andrzej Sapkowski and their Frenchtranslations. We also include thrillers and historical novels in our research. In Polish textswhere the primary objective is not transmitting culture but entertaining a wide range of public, what kind of cultural and contextual knowledge is expressed, what importance does it haveand how is it translated into French? We also question the impact of the absence of suchcultural elements in the translations. To answer all these questions, we establish aclassification of cultural references that can be considered as a possible typology for thecultureme in translation from Polish into French that may apply to other types of texts. Foreach category and subcategory, we analyze specific examples from our corpus of texts. Thisallows us to recognize most frequent practices in broadcasting literature translations, andperhaps offer new approaches.

La traducción de conceptos políticos en la prensa : problemas y estrategias de traducción del español al sueco en el artículo "Adiós clase media, adiós"

Haraldsson, Helena January 2013 (has links)
This essay deals with translation issues arising when translating a political newspaper article from Spanish into Swedish. The identified issues are strongly related to cultural differences between the culture of the source text and the culture of the target text. Thus, the aim of the study is to identify and explore how cultural references, political concepts and metaphors are translated in the following newspaper article, “Adiós clase media, adiós”. The study is partly based on a quantitative method, which shows that the four most common translation techniques in the present translation are the following: transposition, direct translation, couplet and established equivalent. However, the qualitative analysis, focusing on the social context and the cognitive processes of the translations, proves that several other strategies are useful when translating political concepts. Furthermore, the study verifies that it is necessary that the translator bears in mind that by using one strategy or another, he or she can influence the way the target text will be perceived by the receptor. Some translations are more faithful to the source text while others are more closely related to the target culture. Likewise, some are strongly influenced by the author or publisher and others by the translator’s own ideological purposes.

The Effects of Translating Culture-Bound References : A Study of the Translation Strategies Used Regarding Culture-Bound References in the Swedish Translations of the 1994 Movie The Swan Princess / Effekterna av att översätta kulturella referenser : En studie om de översättningsstrategier som använts rörande kulturella referenser i de svenska översättningarna av filmen Svanprinsessan från 1994

Fägerman, Cecilia January 2022 (has links)
The ever-changing practice of translating movies evolves along with living languages and media development. Dubbing a movie broadens its reach adequately when the primary audience is younger children with little knowledge of the movie’s source language and culture. Dubbing is a form of audiovisual translation where much of the original dialogue can be kept since the time restraints are ruled by the original dialogue. In this study, culture-bound references from the children's movie The Swan Princess (1994) have been analyzed with the purpose of identifying the translation strategies used. The study is qualitative, and the analysis is based on audiovisual translation theory. This study has shown that the cost of subtitling instead of dubbing a movie, for children, is its culture-bound expressions and references. Dubbing has many advantages for audiences who cannot read fast enough for the subtitles to contain something of substance.
