Design and Analysis of a Multi-Processor Communication Protocol for Real Time Sensor Data

Franke, Markus 04 September 2008 (has links)
At IAV GmbH, Chemnitz, an embedded platform for high-performance sensor data acquisition has been developed. Sensor data is gathered and preprocessed by two digital signal processors (DSP) which communicate bidirectionally via dual-ported memory with the central controlling instance, a Freescale MCF5484 microcontroller running uClinux. The goal of this thesis is to design, implement, analyze and optimize a real-time communication protocol between both DSPs and the microcontroller. The challenges of this thesis can be defined as follows: • A uClinux driver for the dual-ported RAM must be implemented. This driver has to employ the microcontroller’s internal DMA engine and should be integrated into the Linux kernel’s DMA framework. • The DMA engine must be thoroughly analyzed. Especially interesting is its behavior when concurrently performing data transfers. Potential influence factors onto data transfer performance and timing predictability should be experimentally identified and quantitatively characterized, if possible. • Sensor data from the DSPs to the microcontroller has to meet real-time demands and must be prioritized in some way over status and parameter data from and to the DSPs. • Correct and efficient synchronization is a must. If possible, different synchronization schemes should be compared to each other. • The achievable performance in terms of guaranteed and maximum data throughput between DSP and microcontroller as well as end-to-end bandwidth has to be estimated. • Apart from the DMA engine analysis, a general evaluation of potential and achieved performance, timing predictability and the remaining microcontroller’s processing capacity (if any) should be executed.

Development Of Bio-Based Thermosetting Resins

Gaurangkumar Mistry, Snehaben January 2021 (has links)
Thermoset polymers are widely used polymers in the world, but Increase in global plastic pollution and lack of fossil fuel stimulates intense research towards environmentally sustainable materials. Bio-based unsaturated polyesters (UPs) would be an excellent solution to replace oil-based synthetic polyesters. Most of the unsaturated polyesters have been synthesised by ring opening polymerisation (ROP) of cyclic esters or lactides.  In this study, different resins were developed using different initiators such as isosorbide (IS),1,4 butanediol (BD), and cis-2 butene 1,4 diol (C2BD) with monomers like lactide (L) and alpha angelica lactone (AAL) through the ring opening polymerisation process. The produced resins were further characterised by using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR),Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA).  Synthesis of resin with lactone monomer was not successful while with lactide monomer it was successful. IS-based resin showed better thermal properties compared to other obtained resins. Tg value of IS containing resin was 63°C, thermal stability up to 235°C and Storage modulus about 3841 MPa. These values are comparable with other bio-based resins produced using the same monomer.

Evaluation of the critical parameters and polymeric coat performance in compressed multiparticulate systems

Benhadia, Abrehem M.A. January 2019 (has links)
Compression of coated pellets is a practical alternative to capsule filling. The current practice is to add cushioning agents to minimize the stress on the coated pellets. Cushioning agents however add bulkiness and reduce the overall drug loading capacity. In this study, we investigated the performance of compressed coated pellets with no cushioning agent to evaluate the feasibility of predicting the coat behaviour using thermo-mechanical and rheological analysis techniques. Different coating formulations were made of ethyl cellulose (EC) as a coating polymer and two different kinds of additives were incorporated into the polymeric coating solution. Triethyl Citrate (TEC) and Polyethylene glycol 400(PEG400) were used as plasticizers at different levels to the coating formulations (10%, 20%, 30%). Thermal, mechanical and rheological measurements of the coating film formulations were achieved to investigate the effect of plasticizers. Thermal gravimetric analysis results (TGA) showed higher residual moisture content in films plasticised with PEG 400 compared to their TEC counterparts. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) and Parallel Plate Shear Rheometer (PPSR) were used to study the influence of the level and type of plasticisers incorporated in coating film formulation on the performance of the coating film. In this study, both DSC and DMA were used to investigate the Tg for each film coating formulation in order to evaluate the effect of the additives. In general DMA results for the Tg value of the films were always higher by 10-20% than those measured by the DSC. Furthermore, clamp size and the frequency of the oscillation have an influence on the evaluation of Tg. Complex viscosity for different coating film formulations revealed that the shear hinning gradient changes with temperature and plasticiser type and concentration. The value of complex viscosity from DMA and PPSR exhibits power law behaviour. The rheological moduli were indirectly affected by the level of plasticiser. There was a discrepancy between the complex viscosity results obtained from both DMA and PPSR at similar temperature but they follow the same trend. The non plasticized polymer showed a 10 time higher complex viscosity values when measured by DMA over that measured by PPSR. The difference was smaller in plasticized films but it was not consistent. Therefore a consistent coefficient to correlate the DMA and PPSR couldn’t be accurately determined Coated pellets were compressed and key process parameters were evaluated. The obtained results revealed that the coating thickness has a significant effect on the release profile of the final products. It was found that by increasing the coating film thickness, the percentage released decreased. Also the compression force has lower influence on the drug release profile, while the dwell time has very low effect on the percentage release from the final products. Optimum release profile was obtained at a coating level of 5.5% w/w and a compression force of 4700N In conclusion, the elasticity of the plasticised EC films in this study meant that the internal stress is not dissipated during compression and the dwell time range that was used in this experiment. Increasing the thickness therefore was necessary to enhance the strength of the film and avoid cracking. The mechanical and rheological profiling was helpful therefore to understand the behaviour of the coated pellets and predict the film properties at various steps of the process of coating and compression (i.e., various shear rate regimes). Experimental design approach to studying the key process and formulation parameters helped identify the optimum values for the process.

Etude des propriétés fonctionnelles des polymères : application à la cuisson d'aliments en milieu vapeur confiné / Study of functional properties of polymers : application to food cooking in a confined steam environment

Narses, Sebastien 19 December 2012 (has links)
Une étude des molécules éventuellement libérées durant le vieillissement permettrait de vérifier l’innocuité de ces matériaux / This work is incorporated within the framework of the project Saveurs Vapeurs (Steam Flavors) from the SEB Group, aimed at developing a new assortment of steam cooking devices. This PhD thus deals with the analysis of the functional properties of polymer materials subjected to two types of ageing found during steam cooking. First, coloration resistance of the latter in presence of coloring alimentary substances was evaluated, at 60°C and 100°C. A chromameter was used for the analysis of samples color, in the Lab color space. Results show that only fully fluorinated polymers resist to coloration after 1000 hours spent at 100°C. Some other polymers, like polycarbonate, PET and partially fluorinated polymers, do not show any coloration after 1000 hours at 60°C. The solubility theory was used for anticipation of the results, and seems to be reliable in many cases. However its use needs an in-depth study, because some other molecules found in the substances can interfere with the sorption of colored molecules. Second, hydrothermal ageing resistance of these polymers was studied, at temperatures of 100°C, 120°C, and 140°C. Parameters measured were the characteristic temperatures (by DSC, TGA and DMA) and mechanical properties by DMA. Water mass uptake was also evaluated. Most of the polymers, excepted PE, PET and polyamids, do not show any modification of their properties after 1000 hours ageing at 100°C. After ageing 1000 hours at 140°C, only fully fluorinated polymers, polysulfone and ETFE do not show any sign of properties change. These first results need however a further analysis. A study of possibly liberated molecules during ageing could allow to verify the inoffensiveness of these materials

Caractérisation approfondie de copolymères triblocs PS-b-POE-b-PS utilisés en tant qu'Electrolytes Polymères Solides pour les batteries Lithium-Métal-Polymère / Detailed characterization of PS-b-PEO-b-PS block copolymer of interest as solid electrolytes for lithium batteries

Pelletier, Bérengère 20 July 2015 (has links)
The research on electrochemical storage of energy is today in a stage of fast and profound evolution owing to the strong development of portable electronics requesting power energy as well as the requirement of greener transport modes. Most commercial batteries use liquid or liquid-based electrolytes, which limits their thermal stability, energy density and safety. These limitations could be considerably offset by the use of solid polymer electrolytes (SPE) and lithium metal polymer technology (LMP). However, the main drawback of the SPE is the decrease of the ionic conductivity with increasing mechanical strength, necessary to avoid the formation of lithium dendrites during the recharge of the battery. In this context, triblock copolymers PS-b-PEO-b-PS with a PEO block as ionic conductor and PS block providing mechanical strength was a promising candidate as SPE. In order to build composition/morphology/performance relationships, the aim of my PhD is to characterize carefully the block copolymer. For that purpose, the PS-b-PEO-b-PS synthesized (NMP) were characterized using Liquid Chromatography under Limiting Conditions of Desorption (LC LCD). Furthermore, analyses of morphologies and nano-structure by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) techniques, analyses of thermal (DSC) and mechanical (DSC) properties will be also discussed. Finally, measures of impedance were made via symmetric cells Lithium / Electrolyte / Lithium.

Skyddet för data : En analys av digitala tjänsters skydd för sin data genom sui generis-rätten i ljuset av Digital Markets Act / The protection of data : An analysis of digital services' protection of their data through the sui generis-right in light of the Digital Markets Act

Adamidis, Konstantinos January 2023 (has links)
The sui generis-right in article 7.1 of the database directive provides the maker of a database, who has made a qualitatively and/or quantitative substantial investment in the obtaining, verification and/or presentation of the contents in a database, the right to prevent extraction and/or re-utilization of the whole or of a substantial part of the database contents. In order to prevent the circumvention of article 7.1, the right to prohibit tortious dispositions of the contents was sup- plemented by article 7.5, which extends the right for the maker to prevent non-substantial parts to be extracted and/or re-utilized, provided that the extraction and/or re-utilization are repeated and systematic in a way that undermines the substantial investment the maker of the database has made.  The way that the sui generis-right is framed as an investment protection, in combination with the fact that the right’s object of protection is the investment as such, is the reason that the right has come to be regarded as a protection clause against unfair competition rather than an intellectual property right. As a result, the sui generis-right is of great significance to unfair competition and competition and antitrust law in general. This applies not only to article 102 FEUF, but especially to the DMA and in relation to the prescribed data-sharing obligation in article 6.10 in the DMA.  Competition and antitrust law in general and the DMA in particular, through its rootedness in article 3 FEU, aim to maintain competitive, open and fair digital markets. This applies, to say the least, as a part of ensuring the efficiency in the EU internal market, which by enlarge is intended to benefit the consumers. In this way, it’s understood that the consumers perspective plays a fundamental role in competition policy. In relation to the DMA, this is expressed through articles 6.2 and 6.10 of the DMA, which have the function of promoting innovation and increasing the consumers’ diversity of choice, while simultaneously giving the business users better opportunities to compete with the gatekeepers and thus become more efficient.  By imposing on a gatekeeper a far-reaching data-sharing obligation under article 6.10 in the DMA, in combination with the prohibition to use the same data under article 6.2, the gatekeepers’ sui generis-right is limited in all material aspects. Thereby, these provisions impose greatly on the gatekeepers’ ability as a maker of a database to freely dispose of their own database contents and thus obtain future returns and other competitive advantages as a result of the substantial investment. This is due to the fact that the gatekeeper is subject to an obligation to share the results of the investment with the business users.  The database directive states, however, that the sui generis-right must not be afforded in such a way as to facilitate abuses of a dominant position. By this reference it’s understood that this exception was written with article 102 FEUF in mind. In light of the significant differences between article 102 FEUF and the DMA, it can be concluded that the exception does not apply to the DMA. This is particularly the case as the DMA is framed as an ex ante-regulation, whereas article 102 FEUF is an ex post-regulation.  As this paper has highlighted, it requires great forethought when imposing a compulsory data-sharing obligation such as the one in article 6.10 in the DMA. The intended function of the sui generis-right is to promote investments in data processing and storage functions. In order to even receive or make use of the effective and high-quality data the business users have a right to receive from the gatekeepers, they have to have effective and proper databases, because otherwise it's entirely pointless to even force the gatekeepers to share their data.  Thus, a proportional balance is required between the interest in protecting the data as such by maintaining ex ante incentives to invest and the interest to promote open and fair digital markets as a way to ensure the effectiveness of the internal market for the benefit of the consumers and ex post social welfare. This could be a possible explanation to the Commission’s proposal of the Data Act, specifically article 35, which stipulates that the sui generis-right shall not be applied to machine generated data. It remains, however, to see how the question of the sui generis-right’s to be or not to be will play out in the future.

Closed-loop control and data- recording of a modular-multilevel converter (MMC)

Su, Longgang January 2022 (has links)
Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are the preferred converter solution in flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) applications. This is due to the high quality of the voltage and current signals, lower overall losses, and fewer problems with switching-related EMI. However, without an efficient and fast data recording system, the sampled data from current and voltage measurement boards can cause long latencies in the control system and make it difficult to analyze the operation of MMCs. In this thesis, a filed programmable gate array (FPGA)-based closed-loop control, and a high-speed data recording system is developed for a low-power singlephase MMC prototype. In the prototype, a data-transmission scheme based on the RS485 (TIA/EIA- 485) standard exists. This protocol offers a robust solution for transmitting data over noisy environments. A direct memory access (DMA) scheme is utilized to transmit sampled data from the programmable logic (PL) to the processing subsystem (PS) in the Zynq-7000 SOC. Moreover, an asymmetric multiprocessing (AMP) mechanism was implemented on the two processor cores in the PS. The first processor controls the power transmission to and from the power grid, and the second processor runs the ethernet application to transmit sampled data to the computer using MATLAB. For the closed-loop control of this MMC prototype, a phase-locked loop (PLL), a proportional resonant (PR) current controller, and an energy control loop for capacitor voltage balancing and control are implemented. The results showed that the output power of this single-phase MMC prototype is under control and each sub-module capacitor voltage is balanced and charged to the desired value. The sampled data can be recorded from the computer through the implemented data recording system at 25.6Mbps. Moreover, a dynamic oscilloscope function is developed in MATLAB using this online data recording scheme.

A new rheological polymer based on boron siloxane cross-linked by isocyanate groups

Shmelin, George January 2012 (has links)
The research described in this thesis originated from an idea to develop new body protection for the sport of fencing. The ultimate goal is to develop body armour which would be flexible, wearable, washable, light and breathable, offer protection from injuries and cover the entire body of a sportsman. A new material which exhibits shear thickening behaviour has been specially developed for this purpose in the process of this investigation. The material was designed and synthesised as a soft polymeric system which is flexible, chemically stable and able to increase the value of its modulus of elasticity upon impact at a high strain rate, while remaining in its soft gel-like elastomeric state when low strain rate deformation is applied. The polymeric system that has been developed is based on interpenetrating polymeric networks (IPN) of immiscible polyurethane/urea-ester/ether and poly(boron)n(dimethylsiloxane)m (where on average m ≈ 16 n). In addition, as the polydimethylsilane (PDMS) based polymeric system strongly tends to phase separation, the siloxane polymeric network was chemically cross-linked to the polyurethane polymeric network through polyurethane chemical cross-link-bridges. In order to introduce polyurethane cross-links to a siloxane-based polymeric network, some of the attached methyl groups in the PDMS polymeric backbone were substituted by ε-pentanol groups. The resulting polymeric system combines properties of an alternating copolymer with IPN. The actual substitution of the methyl groups of PDMS into alternating ε-pentanol groups was performed by Grignard reaction of trifunctional chlorosilane monomers, magnesium and 1,5-dibromopentane. Chemical analytical techniques like FT-IR, 13C NMR and 1H NMR spectroscopy were used to reveal the chemical structure of the synthesised polymeric network. The mechanical and dynamical properties of the obtained polymeric system were analysed by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). This part of the investigation indicated that the novel polymeric system exhibited shear thickening behaviour, but only at a narrow diapason of deformations (i.e., deformations between 2 to 3 % of the length of the sample). At this limited diapason of deformation an effective increase of the modulus of elasticity from 6 MPa (at lower frequencies, i.e., up to ≤6 Hz of the applied oscillating stress) to 65 MPa (at frequencies between 12.5 to 25 Hz) was obtained. However, no increase in the modulus of elasticity was recorded at deformations below 1.5 % or above 3.5 % of length of the sample at the same frequencies (0 to 25Hz) of the applied oscillating stress.

Kitobo Samson, Willy 07 July 2009 (has links)
The work present results from research study devoted to de-pollution of the stocked tailings in Kipushi (DR Congo) via valorization of the metals contained in the tailings. Pyrite and copper and zinc sulfides present the principal mineral composition of the laid down tailings from the concentrator. Due to the fact that the sulphides have been stocked during more than 40 years, they are partly oxidized. These tailings present a constant risk from physical instability and spillage, which reflects in the deterioration of the surrounding environment (rivers, soil, underground water table, etc). Moreover the migration and dispersion of TEM (trace metal elements) such as arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, copper, lead, zinc, is leading to erosion and mine run-off phenomena during wet season and generate air-borne particles during dry season. The stocking of the tailings is accompanied by slow oxidation of the sulfides with concomitant production of acidic waters which are neutralized by the dolomite present, which finally reflects in hardening of the underground waters and even provoke soil subsidence and ground collapses. In order to reduce the major environmental impacts from the tailings, we have performed a study for their post-treatment which encompasses the cleanup from one side and the reduction of TEMs and sulphur on the other side. Apart from this, the aim was to economically extract the remaining non-ferrous metals, notably Zn and Cu. The approach which has been chosen to accomplish this task has been to re-float by bulk flotation the majority of the sulphides and thus by elimination of the nearly total sulphur (95 %) to eliminate the risk of AMD generation and metals immobilization. We have shown that this is possible to be achieved via grinding the 75 μm oversize fraction in order to facilitate minerals liberation, following by subsequent activation at pH 6 before flotation. Without this pretreatment step, the flotation by use of xanthates is impossible, due to the surface coatings of the grains, which are either of oxide nature or are cyano-metallic complexes formed from the use of potassium cyanide as pyrite depressor in the flotation circuit practiced at the times when the concentrator was operational. The further attempts to produce monometallic flotation concentrates via selective flotation with depression of the pyrite at pH 11 have been unsuccessful due to reasons of complex mineralogy. Therefore chemical (Fe3+) and bacterial leaching of the bulk concentrate enriched in Cu and Zn via two cleaning flotation circuits have been envisaged. The technological parameters for the both leaching options have been studied and the mechanisms of the bioleaching taking place have been proposed in view industrial scale up of the process. It has been found that the chemical leaching should be conducted at very high temperatures (98°C) in order to breakdown the passivation coatings (sulphur). In contrast, the bioleaching has shown good results at moderate temperatures. It has been found that bioleaching is technically feasible to the tailings of Kipushi. We have suggested a bioleaching in two successive stages: the first one with moderate thermophilic microorganisms (55 °C) at pulp density 15 % (weight / volume) and the second one with mesophilic microorganisms (33 °C) at pulp density of 4 % (w/v). Under these conditions two principal PLSs (pregnant leach solution) can be obtained - a one with 3 g/l Cu and 7 g/ l Zn and other one in 0.2 g/l Cu and 7 g/l Zn. The both PLSs could be further processed via solvent extraction. The solvent extraction of Cu is accomplished with LIX984N without modifying the pH of the PLS (1.7 - 1.9), while Zn is extracted using a D2EHPA at pH between 3 and 3,5, after elimination of the iron from the copper raffinate. The aqueous solutions thus obtained are suitable for Cu and Zn electrowinning. Finally, a flow sheet for re-treatment of the Kipushi tailings which could operate during 20 years has been proposed. It could treat about 37 mln tones of dry tailings stocked in the tailing ponds 1 and 2. Preliminary calculations estimate that such treatment would produce new tailings with low environmental risk which will represent about 66 % in weight of the original treated tailings and will yield about 80 950 tons of Cu and 631 750 tons of Zn.
